Really like your van and huge thanks for such a great tour! Your level of responsibility as owners seems exceptional. Safe travels to a beautiful couple.
Wonderful story. I believe everything you stated. Finally I am able to start looking for a Toyota RV. Will try and follow you and your adventures in this complex and beatiful world. BC Canada
Just watched The Reality of Van Life on Amazon so that’s how I ended up here. I watched several of your TH-cam videos and found them quite interesting. Greetings from New Brunswick
Loved this. I actually had an old Toyota Motorhome that I really enjoyed. I went all over in it. It was so trustworthy. I did end up having some leaks one winter when we had tons of snow (I lived in Big Bear CA). I eventually sold it and purchased a Minni Winni which was pretty awesome. I'm currently in a Tinyhouse in a senior community (not my style) and pt in my Ford Econoline conversion and love her. Thanks for sharing.
It's a rare and beautiful thing to see some mindful vanlifers being proactive about waste and recycling - Silva on The Road is the only other content provider I've seen who's also not oblivious to the trail of waste many vanlifers produce. Good work team :)
I've followed you guys for around 2 years now. It is really great to see a discussion about the trade offs of living in a van/camper/rv/etc; I think you are a beautiful couple and I really admire your rig and your work documenting alternative dwellings. 🐐Keep going & sharing your experiences on the road
I'm seeing this a year after it was posted, and I truly appreciate your honest view into van life. I think the most important thing is pointing out how everyday tasks can be exhausting. I don't know that I could ever do it full-time, but my husband and I bought an old Sprinter that we've made into a simple camper, and we're thoroughly enjoying short trips in it. Safe travels!
Glad you got rolling. Really nice space. Really good to know about the propane detector and importance. Keep on rocking. Thanks for all your outstanding content. And thanks for the pros and cons.....
i really enjoyed this. i can retire next year just so sick of trying to live a very modest lifestyle without being dragged into debt is becoming a real problem. I could live in this camper no problem. this series and the individuals involved is a big help to make better decision's.
I'm retired and live in an '84 mini motorhome like this. I agree that it is comfortable living this way without the huge monthly expenses of regular housing. There's more work involved- filling tanks, filtering drinking water, monitoring the propane tank, struggling with mobile phone and internet signals, keeping batteries charged, but there's a great feeling to being completely self-reliant and independent in your cozy mobile home, especially when you are in a remote wilderness area. I really wish you the best adventures in the mobile rig that you find- it's worth the effort.
@@pouglwaw5932 Thank you for comment, There is a upside to living your lifestyle, I feel we lost something as a people in the transition from raising or hunting and growing own food to trying to own the coveted right car wearing the latest clothing to substantiate my active positive lifestyle. we are fed this dream to fall in line with, Some of my worst times made me find value, as long as your not freezing your butt off got a peanut butter sandwich a little coffee and a cigarette sitting under the hiway overpass out of the rain watching the cars go buy. life is good. My 1983 RV also has a U-shaped seating area in back that has a table & also converts into a bed. Great view when I’m by the ocean watching dolphins 🐬 swim by. Simply love traveling in my RV part time. I always go prepared ..I never run out of anything like you guys have said...I go prepared..I have no complaints.
This film and another about you have given me an insight into your lives. I thought you lived in your van on Cortes full-time and have been talking to other boatfolk about you. Now at least I see how you film during your travels, then produce the films after your return to the homestead.
Hypervent is a plastic honeycomb product designed for creating air flow under mattresses on boats and I find it works very well in managing moisture under a mattress. Also, diesel heater might be nice. Efficient, dry heat.
zip lock poop method. if you have a van without a bathroom and your a guy (or maybe it would work for a girl if your careful) you can simply squat poop in a normal plastic grocery or small trash bag, while collecting urine in a separate container. ( like a wide mouth Gatorade jug) . The trick here is just say it is the middle of the night and you do not want to go outside to through out your poop bag, you then put the plastic grocery bag with poop into a ziplock bag (quart size is usually good) and seal it. Once sealed it will not smell and you can throw it in your trash can inside your van and then dump it in an outside trash bin the next day or a few days later with all your other trash. So no need for expensive toilets if you do not have space for them.
The metal box thingy on the heater is called: a heat exchanger. And I don't believe they even sell heaters that exhaust into the living space. Unless you purchase a stand alone that gives warnings against doing so.
What a nice rv for a 40 plus year vehicle. It actually looks pretty maintained by you and previous owners. Only downside is probably speed going straight and definitely going upwards. And the fuel consumption. Yet you say it’s pretty fuel efficient (but probably not by today’s standard) It’s funny you mention wet bath, shower and toilet. Everybody that doesn’t have a toilet in their rig, says it’s just as easy to into public toilets. However I wouldn’t, like you, have to rely on finding public toilets all the time, or in case of emergency have to go into a bucket right in the middle of the rv in the middle of the night or because you got stomach flu or something like that. I actually prefer a real toilet enclosed by walls and a door. IMO you sort of build your travels around to have to be able to have public toilets around you or be far out into the woods to go behind a tree and do your business and then bury your “business”. Of course some people would argue that you also have to empty your black tank, cassette toilet or composting toilet. And that is true, but you also have to fill up on water and gas/petrol. And many places you fill up on water you can also empty your black tank or cassette toilet Another funny thing is, I also never heard of rv’ers and van lifers talk about a responsible way of getting rid of trash and residual waste. Here where I live in Copenhagen Denmark, we have a by law recycling bins for cardboard, metal, plastic, paper, glass, consumer electronics and residual waste, that doesn’t belong in of of the mentioned bins. We also have biological waste bins for biodegradable things like uneaten foods and other things that break down biologically. But that is of course easier to have those bins down in the courtyard where people go down from their condos or apartments and sort their trash or if you live in a house. But I can’t see why not campsites, campgrounds and rv parks cannot have those bins too. Then it’s up to people if they want to recycle their trash from the rv
Even a tiny enclosed bathroom is such a nice, civilized convenience, especially in bad weather or the middle of the night when nobody wants to be looking for a public place. Also, when I have up to 4 guests in my mini motorhome, nobody is going to use a pull-out bucket on the floor.
@@pouglwaw5932 Exactly! That’s what I mean. All of those mentioned “problems” going up in the middle of the night finding a public bathroom or having stomach flu or just REALLY have to use the toilet for number one or two and you’re in the middle of nowhere or even better in the city and can’t go outside doing your business. Or like you mention having friends over and have to use a pull out toilet on the floor. Or going in front of your your girlfriend/boyfriend or wife/husband. I’d like to have my privacy for going on the toilet with an actual door or rectractable screen door and not some curtain or even worse in the open
Such a nice old school rig. Wish Toyota still made something like this. Love the smoker's drapes colored shower head and shower pan. Curious if that's the original engine? If so, how many miles are on the engine and what kind of gas mileage do you get? It is kind of hard to listen without being distracted by the unnecessary and overuse of the word "like". It's like difficult to like listen when you like say like so many like times. That being said, your insight, guidance, experiences and advice on living like this are invaluable. Thankyou for sharing. Glad to hear the community stepped in to help with funds for engine related funds. It's always nice to hear that there are still people helping other people in this ever so selfishly growing world we live in. Hoping for healthy, safe and happy travels as you two pursue this lifestyle. Thanks again for the segment.
ahh, serious question - why you didn't switch to the portable Starlink addition & bring that instead of paying an extra $150 for the data plan you currently have?
It's a large unit that we don't have storage for and it needs to be setup everytime you need it. The Netgear maplewifi is much more convenient for our needs. And this is around 30$ cheaper than what we were paying for starlink.
Sounds like you could benefit from that company that caters to Vintage Toyota selling re-engineered exhaust manifold…it comes at a cost but boosts power at low end and high end rpm’s
The 17/18 miles per gallon makes it all worthwhile. Crawling up long hills beats long, expensive sessions at the gas pumps. Yes, change those fluids- synthetics don't tend to break down with heat and last much longer.
John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. 100% agree on the bathroom. Many also replace their flush toilets with composting cassettes to save water.

Obviously having even a tiny bathroom enclosure, like the one in the mini Toyota here is a huge convenience especially if you ever have guests.
The 22R engines are like a tank. I've seen other V6 3.0L models but you got the best.
The 22R is a little workhorse, just don't expect highway speeds when climbing hills. The 17/18 mpg makes it all worthwhile.
❤❤❤ mmmmm I love them too, blessings guys, in South Africa ❤

Folks speak the way they speak. And we vanners are usually pretty down to earth. It might not be the lifestyle for someone like you

What did you pay for the rig
Gas detectors I believe should be closer to floor
It's not a gas detector. It's a carbon monoxide detector and that is the same density as the air so at head level works fine
Are you actually making money above your expenses?
Everything in life comes with a price.
The only question is, are able and willing to pay that price?
Toys' are good but underpowered 22R engine. Keep those fluids changed out..much more than recommended..think of it as 'money in the bank.'

Use safe soaps, then pump your gray water through filters back to your fresh water
That is for crossing oceans in a small sailboat where every ounce of water is vital- that expensive, complex filter system is not for mini motorhomes.
If it's natural plant based waste in a compost, dig a hole and bury it.
