  • Indonesian fishermen, lured by higher paychecks and steady work, are leaving poorer fishing villages for Malaysia, and are sailing right into the jaws of Abu Sayyaf, a feared terrorist group. The organization earns millions of USD annually from kidnapping ransoms and Indonesian fishermen are the latest target.
VICE meets Subandi, a fisherman from South Sulawesi, who spent 20 months in captivity after being taken off the coast of Sabah, Malaysia. What draws these fishermen into such dangerous waters? And will the kidnappings stop? VICE investigates.

I've noticed that there isn't really a new or old Vice. It just depends on the team that produces the video. Vice likely has hundreds of employees/producers. And some clearly are much better than others.

Even this has layers. Dude from Sulawesi defintely speaks his native tongue and uses Bahasa Indonesian as the language to communicate with other Indonesians like the reporter. So it's kinda like Formal Arabic used for an Algerian to speak to an Omani or a Iraqi.

I knew that one of these comments would be at the top. It's not usually clear whether it refers to the content, its quality, being free(ish) or whatever combination of the latter. I'd like to see more submissions from independents and/or int'l affiliates on youtube too. The other two things are stupid and naive gripes though because Vice still has good content--it's just on a platform, so maybe say what you fuckin mean if those are your complaints, in case the company is interested in good marketing and responds.

We are a nation that prides itself with our ability to bargain, sometimes it's embarrassing (teen me years ago had to watch my mom being kicked out of a shop in the US for trying to bargain.....she came back, with the goods, at the price she wanted, and with the shop owner cursing while taking my mom's money haha!).
But knowing many in the private and government sectors don't bargain to get these people released is pretty awesome too.

I'm Filipino living in Mindanao. If you're a tourist, please avoid the ARMM region, the west side of Mindanao. If you look different or somehow foreign, you easily become the Target for kidnap. If you're a Muslim, they may release you, but to make sure you're a real Muslim, they'll make you recite some Islamic words which are recited from their Holy Q'ran. Generally, the whole Mindanao is not as chaotic as the media portrays. However, being vigilant is the best thing to do when travelling to the west of Mindanao. Danger is anywhere around the world, not in the West Mindanao alone, and not in any Islamic country alone. There are simply bad people scattered in the world.
Also, this problem existed for as long as I can remember. Philippines is an archipelago and the southern west territory is not entirely securely monitored and these last Philippine Islands are not easy to access. However, Indonesians and Filipinos can quickly travel cross countries without the need to present passports and other documents.
