- Nur Misuari is the founder of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), an armed group that's fought for independence against the government of the Philippines for more than three decades.
Misuari currently lives in a remote MNLF encampment on the island of Jolo. The area is a no-go zone for outsiders, especially journalists. VICE News takes the perilous journey into Jolo to meet Misuari and discuss the future of the MNLF as well as the current political situation in the Philippines.

Does the word "Maharlika" ring a bell among Filipinos nowadays? For some reason, when I googled it, the word Maharlika in wiki or any Filipinos site doesn't match with what people in Malaysia and Indonesia know.

I am Korean-Filipino. What he is saying about the Moros are real. When the mainland Philippines was colonized by its various colonizers, it was the Moros that were not conquered by any western colonizers and even defeated them in battle. I think that the Moros should be included alongside Korea, Japan, and Thailand when mentioning countries and states that did not fall under western colonization during the 18-19th century.

Once I met Professor Nur Misuari when he visited Dubai when i was working (OFW) as an operation supervisor in Dubai Civil Aviation and arranged for his private transportation.. I spoke to him privately and the way he acts and talks convinced me that he is really a very humble man.. Hope his long time dreams for a lasting peace and prosperity in Mindanao will soon be a reality under the new president Duterte.

John Mark Quiñones I'm not even a muslim. How can this be a treason if they were ousted of their lands over a single peice of paper without even consulting one of them. The government just gave out lands like it's theirs. Just give me a logical reason considering their history on why they should be executed and why their fight for freedom is not to be honored. Ralph Rochie Dalumbar ...not to discredit you sir, but thats the reason why we have the House of Representatives, or the Congress... their representatives can lobby a petition if they see laws unfair to them... they can propose laws that they feel useful to their area... however, to give them autonomy, is to allow them to impose their own rule independent of the constitution
.in any case, if you wish to have a fair comparison, if a certain island (Palawan for example) is inhabited only by Iglesia ni Cristo members.then they can claim to be independent from the law governing the whole Philippines. that kind of idea is divisive in itself, and will only result to further problems

not that I agree with this guy's idealism, but I can see where he's coming from. colonial idealism did claim their lands as government property in 1946 when locals have been here long before then. the whole island of Mindanao was comprised of kingdoms and sultanates with their own history and monarchical government even before the Taglogs had their own "culture". so for these foreign people to claim their land as government property was a low blow and an in your face "how dare you" moment. until today they are still fighting that same fight. the only difference is, a lot of their peers gave in to colonial government hundreds of years ago and they are the ones who are left standing
They have the cause to do so, if being under that “government” only means the bring about of these corrupt officials then I say they’re definitely better off without it.

Besides, had they not conquered us, America wouldn't even know about us as no Filipino slaves would've been deported to Mexico. No American bases would mean that the Japanese wouldn't even bother attacking. (We had ties with the people, not the government, ever since the start of Spanish occupation. They helped fuel the KKK supposedly) We would've been left alone.
We might be conquered by the British or French though, but from what I heard of battles, our terrain is more suitable for holding these guys back than the Spanish Empire.

Nur Misuari had long wanted peace and autonomy in his land, Duterte gives it to him and in exchange, the strong rebel shares his authority with the government. The government hasn't lost anything, but gained everything.

These manila government use colonization thing but it doesn't work in Mindanao
John Rian Radan exactly and now the government doesn’t fight against the MNLF now. Now, they only have to focus on Abu Sayyaf and the communist rebels. MNLF isn’t set out to overthrow the government anyway, they just want more autonomy in their lands but they will still be under the Philippines government. War would spring up again in the areas where MNLF is based from if the government decides to kill him. Brave Fart does not understand this.
