  • Jordan gets serious for a moment and lays a case for why seemingly normal people aren't very peaceful. In fact, we are all far crazier than most of us think.

There may be some bad times coming im pretty anxious now that i hear JP say the same thing! @Eric Miret Free will is both liberating and terrifying. It is liberating in that you have an active role in the direction that your life goes based on the choices you make. It is also terrifying in that you are responsible for the direction of your life. You can't pass the buck on to others to make yourself feel better.
      The alternative is that you are just a sack of chemicals reacting in a predetermined manner to outside stimulus. The good part of that outlook is that you bear no responsibility for your actions and your life. The bad part is that you are a robot. This is why totalitarianism is so seductive. It obviates your responsibility for yourself.

      They're all likely aware of books like "The Crowd", and "The Sane Society". JP is certainly aware of the problem of how unintegrated and shallow people are, as it was described by Jung. Problem is if you live in the West you need to include yourself under that banner since we identify pretty well exclusively with persona and therefore ignore and neglect much of what we are, such as all the emotions we don't want to feel, and all the behaviors we've suppressed in order to 'be' who we want to think we are. In others words, the cause of mental illness.

    • @jonmacdonald2193

      He is not saying that what so ever. He is saying that the typical "civilized" human takes for granted how civilized we are, because they believe we for the most part will not become uncivilized , when infact its much easier than it appears to be. That is all he is saying in this video, nothing more, nothing less. Of course he may hold that belief that you just said, although I doubt it, but for the moment it is just you projecting what you believe unto him to justify your beliefs

    • @robertdabob8939
      @robertdabob8939 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@jonmacdonald2193 Uncivilized is certainly analogous to being mentally ill when we're talking about going from a civilized state to uncivilized, no? He's saying darker human capacities are lurking just below the surface and the reason is because people are undeveloped, or unintegrated psychologically. When people, being undeveloped, manifest symptoms of being psychologically unstable we call them 'mentally ill'.
      "The essential preconditions of life are sufficiently tragic as to render the normative state of humanity as pathological." - Jordan Peterson

      @@Hyan_Thatsit I understand what you are saying, and i have heard the argument of boosting activity in people. I tend not to drink very much coffee at work because what comes out of the machines are not very palatable, and it fucks up my stomach. Privately, i buy quality beans and make my own coffee. For me coffee doesn't boost that much energy, but a really good cup of coffee does collect my thoughts better. Anyway... Coffee might not go away, but it may diminish in quantity - enough to be a problem for many people to afford it. The coffee growers collect the worst pay for their work in the world, and that has led to people turning away from growing coffee to growing other things that they can get more money from. This year i read that many coffee producers have been selling out their inventories and not been able to stock up. The miserable pay for growers and the extreme weather have drastically reduced the yield. If this trend keeps up, the prices will soar and possibly we will see a much tougher market. Which is why i'm planning to buy a quality roaster and stock up on Raw coffee.

    We have spent a majority of our time as human, being in smaller, closer communities. All of that, which we evolved doing, how we grew as a species, has changed so very dramatically.
    It is honestly no surprise at all that we are how we are. As terrible as it all is, how we are is understandable. Being human, being self-aware, is a terrifying thing.
    I have a history of excruciating anxiety, once in a while I will have entire days full of constant dread. As painful as it is, I believe it can be used for good.

    "There's a thin line between order and chaos"
    - A Wiseman
    His idea validate my feelings I've held towards humanity that we all wear a mask when we walk in the public when he says that we are, as human beings, as capable of peaceful and orderly conduct as we are of violence and terror. A very enlightening man, indeed. It reminds me of what I learned of conflict and fictional theory - that everyone has to learn a function in life and that competition between individuals eventually leads to conflicts of interests.

    This dude is such a genius. I think that even though his views are similar to others that are very smart and on the same of politics, such as Steven Crowder, Ben Shapiro, or even Milo Yiannopoulos, is they try to win the argument by making you look/feel like an idiot, which seems to be their goal, whereas Peterson seems to win the debate by being as civil and articulate as possible. He doesn't necessarily try to make the other party feel/look stupid (though they sometimes do that all on their own), but he still does a great job at pointing out the faults and contradictions in the opposing view while pointing out the pros/cons in his own.

    Thanks for this one, JP always gets me thinking... but this one is particularly important to my theoretical framework for a post-dollar collapse world. The fragmentation of society, while not providing the ideal basis for human interaction - if these groups self-segregated on the condition of a social contract requiring adherence to a few basic rules for the mutual benefit of everyone - such as non-aggression, no subversion tactics, no cross border media and no cross border monetary transactions, we switch to a gift-based economy that would promote independence and favourable conditions for collaboration that are unrivaled in human history. What is holding humanity so far back are worries and distractions. Instead of filling our lives with this BS in a completely eclectic society, we can see a new world of productivity and ingenuity by cutting the sh** out in a modern coherent society - i.e. a society that comes together on some mutually beneficial basis between the individual and the group such as shared values and shared standard for living space.
