  • The Nintendo Wii U is very relatable to me as a college student; nothing but dumb decisions and financial debt.

Awesome video! The Wii U is a really special console to me and regardless of its financial success, it was undoubtedly an important stepping stone for Nintendo as a whole.

The games were actually a large part of the reason why I skipped the Wii U actually, the Wii U saw very little of the games that I gravitate towards which are the large, open adventure games. You mention BotW, but keep in mind that was delayed into being a cross gen game and again, many people just played it on the Switch. Beyond that? We had Xenoblade Chronicles X, which is a fairly niche ARPG game and a bunch of ports and remasters. There were no sandbox Marios like Odyssey on Wii U as the only 3D Mario was a linear platformer in 3D World (and it wasn't until the Switch port that we got the magnificent Bowser's Fury addition), no other 3D platformers, no Pokemon because Game Freak was still handheld only, and no Metroid. If you were someone like me that grew up with the N64 or GC and enjoyed games like Mario 64/Sunshine, OoT, Banjo-Kazooie, or Metroid Prime, or if you were someone who enjoyed more modern experiences like Skyrim, the Wii U was a very sad time for you. And I think that hurt sales too, Nintendo was mainly showing more casual linear platformers (most of them 2D) and casual party/multiplayer games and very few of the open single player adventure games and I think people saw that and it reinforced the "kiddie" narrative, that Nintendo was the underpowered console for kids and couldn't run the big beefy open world games. So I most definitely believe the games were a factor. In a vacuum there were some good experiences there, but none that really sold the notion of "this is a new and more powerful next gen console", it was mainly casual experiences and ones that were fairly similar/iterative from their Wii/3DS predecessors. The Switch meanwhile did a much better job of that thanks to its stellar launch year lineup, having BotW and Mario Odyssey in the Switch's first year surely shut up any haters that might've thought Nintendo consoles can't do big open world games, and the sales difference was night and day different as a result.

I definitely get where you're coming from. Nintendo was still very much riding the success of New Super Mario Bros DS+Wii. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Yoshi's Wolly World, Rayman Legends, Mario 3D World, Mario Maker, and NSMBU are all great to near perfect games. But if 2D linear platformers aren't really your thing, well there goes 60% of the console's major games.

    • @boltstrike2787
      @boltstrike2787 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@ColdKirky Well I don't really mind 2D platformers, but most of those just feel so derivative. They feel like DLC of their previous entries and there wasn't really much in the way of new ideas that made them feel like legitimate sequels instead of just more levels.
But even if the 2D platformers were better, that still wouldn't entirely fix my issue and I'd just be thinking the lineup was "meh" at best. It's not about there being too much of one genre, it's that there's not enough of the other. 3D adventure games may have been the most neglected genre on Wii U. At the very least there were less of them than the N64, GC, and Wii because most of the IPs that typically provided those experiences simply weren't on the platform. When I look at the console's lineup, most of the other genres were eating pretty well (or at least well enough given the circumstances) and I'm struggling to think of another genre that saw even less support on the Wii U. There were 2D platformers as we've mentioned, there were party games, we had shooters, racers, fighters, sports games. But when it came to 3D adventure games, stuff like sandbox platformers, Metroidvanias, open world games, etc.? Practically tumbleweeds.
Many of the IPs we would typically expect these kinds of games from simply weren't there on the platform. Pokemon remained handheld exclusive as always. Metroid skipped the platform entirely. They kept dangling Zelda on the horizon for a while, but it got delayed repeatedly and eventually ended up being cross gen with us only getting remakes during the Wii U's actual lifespan. And then Mario decided to double down on the NSMB style by making their 3D platformers linear NSMB style instead of sandbox style. So you have a cross gen Zelda, remakes, and then all that's left is XCX. That's... quite a significant downgrade and really not much to get excited about. So my biggest issue was that I was waiting all generation to see experiences more like BotW and Mario Odyssey to REALLY get interested in the Wii U. And I ended up having to wait until the launch of the Switch to get such experiences and they never truly came to Wii U.

Even though the Wii U wasn't really all that great, I personally still like the system though anyway including the games that came out for it. I also still have a Wii U of my own which I still use often, and one of my most favorite features on the Wii U is the ability to play games from the original Wii on the Wii U via backwards compatibility, especially since Wii games seem to be better on the Wii U considering that the Wii U uses HDMI and all being that the Wii U was really Nintendo's first ever HD home game console.

Only thing I respectfully disagree with was calling motion controls a gimmick. I think the motion controls were really innovative, and should have been more fleshed out, and they would have if Nintendo didn't gimp the Wii into being a piece of tech trash right before the launch so it would get no third party support. Motion controls in general have this stigma behind them but are really awesome if done right. I love motion controls in gaming, and I think it's another good form of control, like controller and KBM. I mean imagine how lame VR would be without motion lol

  • @TM-45.
    @TM-45. 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I still find that a double screen is more inovative than a portable console that is powerfull enough to be used like a home console.
I like the switch's gimick and wanted the gamepad to do the same in the wii U days but not having a double screen makes some games worse.
If a the other xenoblades had a system like X's to do things like mercenaries wille exploring with the gamepad instead of having to pause the game the experience would have been way better.
It also makes ds games impossible to port if they used the second screen to much.
I just think that it was cooler when used the right way conpared to the switch where there are only the mario games that use the portable aspect, and even them use it for realy basic things.

Sony Vita/Playlink/Microsoft 360/One SmartGlass/Nintendo all had second screen apps or hardware/software so it made sense. But Wii U people noticed more. Dreamcast VMU/GBA and GameCube was the same thing but cabled. They combined Wii, DS, GBA/GameCube connections. It's the all in one Nintendo box VC or gimmicks.
3Souls/Space adventures used the Gamepad well what Indies no one talks about as much.
Motion has a place but yes casuals. VR or if done well Sigh PSVR many still are like Wii Red Steel 1 bad then Red Steel 2 or better. Devs not around then so they don't even take GDC/peer notes. XD I don't have much hope for VR.
For travel videos or other things. Aka Wii U Google Street Pass or Panorama view sure.
Yeah the Switch a PSP/Nomad/Pocket PC with split controls. Good yes, original no, fair games. Do we need gimmicks no but customers comfort /emotions of characters are boring & simple. Yes.
VR is still early days sadly.
When tech is used well. Most others may go pfft second screens. Yet we use them for QR codes/second screen remote for our TVs cough sorry I didn't not point out other uses for it sigh.
So TV TV TV and second screen is wrong but using your phone isn't? So if it's built into the console it's wrong. But if it's voice chat on a phone aka Switch people hate it but if on console it's fine or another social media app alongside a game...... People annoy me with that logic.
So we can have social media and miiverse but forgot other things. I hate humanity and social features first we have 10+ ways to communicate but oh Miiverse memories. Get out of here.
    Tech features first.
I mean sure Sony and Microsoft followed Pocket PCs aka before Steam Deck or Switch aka PSP or other means before the iPhone in 2007. Pocket PCs dropped off by Sony, Samsung and more around 2007. Windows was on Pocket PCs. So mobile and tablets (Microsoft made many but marketing or people being too late to it for casual use them business). As that happens.
Wii U is a problem name. I didn't with 3DS when I saw Lego Star Wars 3 Clone Wars. But that was years ago.
Wii U I barely heard of. Or Vita or 3DS.
But yeah similar games or lacking support of some like balance board. Silver Skies Umbra would have used it but nope that news and Nintendo stopping it due to safety in a horror game. So Wii Fit U only.
The tablet is good and bad.
It varies some games use it well particularly Indies. Some reqife it well like 3 Souls or the ship one with the funny name I forget that's 3 people I'd you do play it that way.
Indies used it well but no one cares on the eshop for them and blame Nintendo.
PS Minis or mobile games on Wii U were definitive console versions not definitive from the mobile versions of course but still.
Sure later I dies were better on PS4 or others like Bit Dungeon a game I knew as a flash game prior. But still. PS Minis on 3DS/Wii U were better version.
No one talks about those either. People talk surface level. I agree Nintendo didn't use it that well but it varies in some games better than others and yes lacking Four Swords, Crystal Chronicles or Pacman Vs is sad and betyuse then Switch or mobile for Crystal Chronicles or Pacman Vs WTF. Oh we need sales but put them on the wrong console. Companies suck.
Yes online works or single screen but seriously. Companies suck at making some games suitable to a platform when they have the chance oh sales instead how about just not port/remaster the game at all.
Motion is a third analogue stick the sooner people think of it that way not just that it's your arm offers more than off screen visibility and stick use and sensitivity/speed of the stick and deadlines the better.
    Comfort is hilarious with people.
Trackballs or light guns hey light guns and motion hmm. Like yeah it's not the same but prices a point how you hold a controller and the states the light guns work.
GBC/GBA had motion or tumble games. But oh the Wii. Oh Hot Swat or Power Glove NES or other mercury tilt switch then later motion devices.
I mean gaming has only some good uses for it then say medical or other tracking use cases with software, cameras and sensors.
The Wii U being wireless and further of the DS isn't a bad thing honestly.
The DS shows the lacking use cases devs had with the Wii U because they were lazy. It being wireless offers less and more at the same time depending on the use cases.
Also Nintendo fans not caring for 3rd parties and their good uses for it major or Indies. Prices my point who hilarious they sue or better but oh players don't care. Why should they bother yet people complain. Well they weren't interested in the games or the Wii U. Just a Nintendo loyalty nostalgia experience of new games.
I can say oh the Wii U is this progression. What improvements & their all you aren't nostalgic get out of here.
The community is just so eh.
Sure Vita to PS4 ports. Or 3DS.
Normal or tech people doesn't care. But I do. I see potential not just boring formulas of games & comfort.
Foamstars lacks modes/good moveset/Biomursnt compared to Space Station Silicon Valley & it's animals, Chameleon Twist's tongue move still unique.
Biomutant besides gas immunity. Why no digging, flight (besides the glider), swimming. Vehicles, yes but peeing on checkpoints, 4 leg sprinting. Sigh. Human then animal language. Games suck when they barely pushing gameplay it's why I find open aods boring other then a few like Gravity Rush, Sunset Overdrive, Darksiders 2 hub Zelda/GOW bur still (liked Atlas Fallen). Forspoken magic & world looked cool but oh she talks, sigh. I like gameplay, most people everything else. I hate cinematics Sony games but still.
Balan for Rayman 3 style suit poweups. That's it. Chao & more couldn't care less.
Year of Luigi and more were not ideal, or the marketing for sure.
Some vertical of the Gamepad like Vita (Nintendo Land F Zero when you had DS book style games/apps or you had Vita LBP Vita or Little Deviants vertical then horizontal it's weird but kind of cool also the analogue sticks both sides in some Wii U party games is odd but cool).
Playing Playlink for PS4 party games and getting the dead APK files from Android sources that have them when Google Play doesn't offer them or make them later OS firmware visible yeah I've had fun with them.
Hidden Agenda more so then the other party games.
A make choices detective story is way better then quizzes and drawing all the time.
I thought Hidden Agenda would work with the PS camera but as it's to make it easier to answer a choice I can see why.
Playroom and Playroom VR showed off the Vita, Phones second screen use cases and Assymetrical multiplayer with the VR headset user and other players of 1v3-4. like the Wii U did for Nintendo Land. Then the online of Evolve or Friday the 13th or Predator Hunting Grounds of 1v4.
Off TV Play is great but yeah Wii U controllers would have been nice but as the disk's rather than a digital Duck Hunt copy made with Wiimote in mind for the re-releases yeah they can not make it still Wii controllers with the physical and reprogramming them they just can't unless it's a digital copy like Xbox back compat which they don't do.
I never used Wii shop channel back in the day so to me the lacking Wii settings and empty channel space doesn't bother me that much.
Some dual screen aspects are great like DS VC but GBA manuals pause eh.
Gamepad menu use is a bit eh in the OS. Lacking videos or gameplay use cases. TV focus all the time.
Nowadays it's Vita and Switch ports have TV in mind and hard to read HUDs. Borderlands 2 port on Vita eh. Many on Switch TV for sure unless general idea what everything means and less reason to look at them.
It's not perfect and I know that. A lot of weird use of the hardware for the OS/Menus I don't like but I also saw potential of it was tweaked.
I like dual screen phones. I hate boring devices we have today. I liked Windows 8 I hate other Windows because the look and navigation is horrible.
TV TV TV was what it was about I mean PS5 has picture in picture, PS4 had a camera but oh it wasn't tracking like Microsoft at least.
I liked the Windows 8 multi app approvech but we got social features sure whatever less reason for me to use my Xbox One as they killed the TV TV TV stuff in 2017 same with Kinect gestures tutorial so games only or getting the old 2013 OS but as many aspects of online from apps yeah no point I guess.
Wonderful 101 Remastered has a second screen picture in picture.
    The games were fine.
Third parties from VR Meta Quest userbase (PSVR2 not big enough) their like yeah sure, doesn't sell well well time to nope out. The greedy idiots. But went to mobile or the other consoles hard the greedy companies.
Wii U has fair games, fair gimmick is ecades.
Not DS videos top and bottom or gameplay top and bottom or lid closing but still some ok ideas. Sigh TV focus then Gamepad even though the Gamepad is faster has to be the TV.
Power bank on the go yes please. Most people didn't do that. A screen yes please no need for a screen for the Series S or PS1 or third party HipGear controller or for the consoles of GameCube/PS2/Xbox.
    It has its moments.
I got to the Wii U late and love it. Researching it I know it's problems.
I see dual screen phones and go well it has no app support of care because it's niche.
Wii U menu needs work in ma y ways for dual screens let alone some games could have gone further or cough Four Swords and other ports BUT NO. Sigh.
Sorry for the long post. Felt the need to. There is so much cool stuff to consider with Wii U as yes I find regular consoles boring because why the OS is a bit eh and we aren't on 6rh gen anymore where sure GBA/GameCube or PS2 pressure sensitive buttons but actually still good game experimenting design so why else wouldn't I be bored with modern consoles if only some games have fair design and most are formulaic?
I don't have response/reaction videos to make so long comments and thoughts it is. :)

    • @ColdKirky
      @ColdKirky  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

An appealing thumbnail is not the same thing as an appealing picture. Thumbnails are like book covers that only have 1 second to catch the attention of the person scrolling through. Dumb faces in thumbnails usually serve two purposes:
      1) it's visual storytelling. Having me look confused and disgusted by the Wii U gets the idea of the video across much better than if I was just sitting there normally.
      2) the weird faces are more eye-catching. An overly expressive face in a thumbnail can convey to viewers that this video is crazy, shocking, uncomfortable, exciting, dramatic, or any other adjective. The face displays some wild emotion and tells the viewers that they might feel the same way if they click and watch that video.
