There’s a much easier way to do this. I had a business for 12 years selling mohair for doll artists. Just FYI the conditioner is what relaxes the hair. I used to own mohairhouse, but I sold the business 2 1/2 years ago. The new owners don’t dye hair much anymore. I will have a how to book and video soon. It will be from goat to final process.

I heard mohair takes longer to absorb the dye than human hair does so leave it on longer. At least 2 hours. Also make sure its past the base color phaze.. in other words make sure u no longer see the base color that is in hair dye such as blue or green or violet gold or orange etc.. after that absorbion development phaze the dye will thrn hace opened the pores of the hair to penetrate deposit of pigment of color. Also mohair hates temp change of water. Stay with hot dont shock it with cold. Or it will frizz/felt up, losr silkyness . Also. Air dry on a rack with plenty of ventillation. Dont touch it while its wet. Its damaging prone while wet. When done use whateevr condirioner such as protein or keratin or if it deels dry use moisturizing. Also a gentle leav in conditioner very lightly spritz is ok.

Thank you for the clip. Good to put strainer in sink as hair will go down it and can clog up the sink. Also the cutting worked out ok but usually the method is to cut from the hair or fur side with scissors, sliding them between the hair close to the backing of fur fabric or skin. that way no hair is lost at all. Usually I only apply dye of any sort to hair or fabric that is wet first but rung out a bit, as it takes up the dye faster and much more evenly. Thank you for your video. xx

    Very good video n_n
But I have a question, I want to buy Angora Mohair, but I don't know how much I need for a wig. The square you cut is about 15X15cm?
    Thanks!

Sorry I'm so late! Yes, 15 cm is about right. But not everyone sells it on a pelt so I would recomment about 3 oz for an SD doll head. ^^

Buy extra and dye extra if dyeing it. the pain and trouble will be 10 times worse if you run out and you can always use extra bits on other projects. xx

When dyeing alpaca fiber that is not on skin do you wash it first and condition it?

Wash any fur first a couple of times with detergent or shampoo or something and add something like vinegar or some disinfecting thing. This gets out dirt and germs and bugs. I would not use conditioner unless very tiny amount and washed out well, as it could coat the hair and stop it absorbing the dye slightly. Sorry, probably 4 yrs too late! xx

Where do you get your hair? I can only find people overseas selling it and not on a clear, so little nervous about dying hair when it's in hunks.

I only buy my hair on Etsy. Yeah sometimes I have to get it from overseas, and sometimes it doesn't work for me and I have to buy something different. I think risk is just part of it. :-)

Hello! What should I use for faux fur?

I would try fabric dye for that, perhaps something for synthetics. :-)
