  • Why Silat is effective in a street fight
It will be really hard to exhaust all the martial arts out there that will be perfect for a street fight. Another one we would like to consider is the Indonesian martial art known as Silat, which means combat or fighting, which is now generally referred to as Pencak Silat can be easily confused with other branches of martial art such as Karate and Kung Fu.
But unlike the traditional martial arts that we know, Silat is a lot less popular, but regardless of how unpopular it may be in the world of martial arts and self-defense, it has to be given the accolade of having the most brutal hits.
Many people who aren't quite familiar with this art have this misconception that Pencak Silat puts a lot of focus on weapon combat than it does on unarmed combat. But that is just an opinion of the vast minority who know little to nothing about the art.
Well, in today's video, we will be looking at how effective Pencak Silat is effective in the streetfight for self-defense and all you need to know about it. And if you wish to start training in Silat or you haven't considered it at all, why don't you stick around till the end of the video. Let's get into it.

The last time when I was in Indonesia, I saw their local news reporting that a young man had defended himself with his martial arts (Silat) skills and had killed 😳 one of the 2 armed bandits who wanted to take his motorcycle. the news reporter said that the local police did not arrest this young man but awarded him a charter.

When watching this clip you really appreciate how good Maul Mornie is compared to every other Silat Master (that includes Cecep Arif Rahman, love the guy, but it always feels like a dance/acrobatics), Maul's Silat is very unique, no nonsense and he moves like a tank, very solid and his manipulations into take downs give you very little time to counter or do anything. My background is Kickboxing and BJJ and I've played around with some of his stuff in sparring and its really great 🙂

For me, the scariest part of silat is our muscle memory. Most of us learned it since we were 7 or 8. Now when we are older, sudden or any surprise would really trigger those muscle memory and it would really hurt people. It's just pure movements without any thinking. It's like we suddenly do all of this to survive and get out of whatever "trouble" or danger we sense from the surprise.

I learnt silat for two years during my junior high school (1997 - 1998). I was a nerd at school at that time and some bigger boys bullied me. When I finally lost my control, I hit them very hard with my silat moves (one of them have his teeth fell off and nose bleeding). After that, I got respect from all kids in my school and never bullied again. Silat helped me to have confident to face people.

I studied several styles of martial arts for around 50 years.
Most,Chinese soft styled. And started with Japanese Goju ryu (later, changed to Goju Shorin by master Petrer Urban).
One thing I learned when it came to street fighting someone...was a well known and true statement by Bruce Lee.."Simplicity is the key to effectiveness".
    I met Bruce in 1967.
He was arrogant and a smart ass.But he was good, and knew defense principles like no other.
Silat IS brutal.I'll give it that. But,when you're in a street situation, simplicity is the key.I've fought around the world twice and found that fancy shit, tho impressive looking,is the last thing you want to try in the street.Take a mans eyesight, and he belongs to you.If you can punch him in the face, you can instead, destroy his eyes,
Keep it simple Be effective, what ever style you choose.

Most silat training is live action role playing against compliant opponents. I trained extensively all throughout Indonesia between 1974 and 1982 - culminating in taking Gold at the inaugural World Silat Championships in Jakarta. Silat is an underexposed martial arts due to how dangerous it can be. Medieval period in Nusantara (Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore & Philippines) was a little bit different than most countries.
War was treated differently in Nusantara, in which I mean, normally when you think of medieval wars, most likely you would think of an open battlefield where both sides duke it out. However Nusantara was different, war was all about assassination here, that's why the countries in Nusantara doesn't really have much fancy traditional weapons like China or Japan, our traditional weapons are small because the medieval fighters of Nusantara have always been fighting as assassins rather than warriors. They usually fight in the forest trying to ambush each other, so small weapons is always preferable, and that was the background for Silat's development. Silat is a martial arts that aim to turn your entire body into a weapon, and make every hits the killing blow. It aims for your vital points to take you out as quickly and efficiently as possible, after all again, it's a technique used by Nusantara assassins, and now is used by the special forces from Nusantara countries
That's why in today's MMA competitions, we almost never see anyone using Silat techniques. Because yes, they're pretty much banned to be used in sports competitions for being too lethal and dangerous, which is understandable tbh, even here in it's land of origin, Nusantara, Silat techniques needs to be put under heavy restrictions in any competitions featuring it

Many martial artists would describe Silat as pure violence, it is extremely fast and efficient. The basic idea is that you are hitting a soft part of your opponent's body with a hard part of your body. It is very focused on self-defense and although the sport form of it has rules, the applied part does not. I find it to be kind of like a combination of Muay Thai and Arnis, it is very similar to Filipino martial arts and yes, does require a serious investment of time. Real lineage holding teachers of Silat are not very common in the US.

Boxing is good enough for self defense in most cases. You don't want to accidentally cripple someone with Silat because you target their weak point and went too far in heat of the moment. Fight that could just ended with bleeding nose and bruises would end with broken bones and life changing injury with Silat. Learn boxing and just knock them out, a lot safer that way.

    • @frankmorrison2711

Boxing should always be a base for self-defense training. Boxing allows you to knock people out with your hands, teaches you to hit hard, fast, and often while also learning to avoid punches. Boxing also gets you used to taking taking a punch while also conditioning you athletically to be leaner and stronger.
After a year of boxing if you want to add to it take up another style.

That's why, back in the day, when I joined the Merpati Putih silat Dojo, it was not allowed for sports fighting... We once had a friendly match with karate, and we were confused because my coach prohibited us from striking using breathing techniques. Their strikes, as they were used to training their muscles rigorously, were very powerful, and we couldn't do anything since we were accustomed to training strikes with breathing techniques.
Because I didn't want to become a punching bag with continuous kicks, I decided to strike using the breathing technique just once. It turned out that my strike indeed caused my opponent to faint, which frightened me, and I received a punishment from the coach of 50 push-ups. Fortunately, my opponent recovered without having to be taken to the hospital... despite my immense fear. I was just a 13-year-old kid at that time.

I’d add, “learn good manners and use them.” Possibly the most legit dangerous martial artist/street fighter I ever met would apologize to a person who stepped on his foot, because his foot was in the way. FTR, he didn’t do that when we were younger; seldom started fights but always quickly and brutally finished them. When I asked him why he started doing that he said, “Most men aren’t the fighters they think they are. They win a few schoolyard scuffles, get a taste for what they think is violence, turn into bullies. Then they run up on someone like me. It’s not fun to beat up someone who can’t defend themselves and doesn’t know it yet…”

But if you live in a relatively peace an law full environment then it's a bit hard. Because I have to beat my opponent without inflict a huge fatal damage. Our style of training made us instinctly resort to the easiest but at the same time most brutal technique. And it's very hard to soften or change that instinct. I also suffered a broken neck months ago, so I probably shouldn't really practice boxing or muay Thai for a while as I'm not sure if I will need surgery.

That's why they pop up in many arts/jutsu/jitsu, not necessary one is copying the other. There's a video in TH-cam about this, "there's only 3 martial arts that works" or something like that in the vid's title.
The traditional pencak silat have the physical form and the "non physical" form, aka. breathing methods.
The modern one have rules and regulation and is unfortunately less famous compared to Ju Jitsu. So it's understandable if you think that Silat is kinda like Ju Jitsu, or even copying a bit.

Silat and muay thai practitioners didn't use lethal moves that killed their opponent on first strike. Their move is intended to break bones, dislocating joints and deliver a powerful strike that can cause internal bleeding and damages to the organs. Of course someone would end up dying if they fight against silat or muay thai master. But before they die, they would suffer a lot of pain with the time they still have to inhale their last breath.

Silat is the original technique for killing with many form of lethal blow using hand combat and various kind of weapons, while Pencak Silat is for sport purpose and under heavy restrictions.

My grandad and dad learn Silat Serimau Hitam but I dont yikes😅, my dad sent me to taekwondo class. Its a combination of five types of Silat that found throughout Malaysian Peninsular including Singapore. The five I think its called Silat Wali Suci, Silat Jawa, Silat Cekak, Silat Sambarani and Silat Gayong. Some of the kicks from my taekwondo training are very similar to the kicks that my dad demonstrate but more technical I would say. Taekwondo kicks I would say...flashy? I didnt say Taekwondo is bad, it do damage. Broke my nose once and ribs twice. But Silat is more focus on getting out of trouble as humanly possible. idk if this make sense.

Why is silat not for sports? Because every movement is intended destroy or kill, not just to block or parry.

Pencak silat has existed in Indonesia since ancient times. Many historians reveal that pencak silat was first encountered in Riau province during the era of the Sriwijaya kingdom in the VII century.
At that time, pencak silat was still simple, in the form of hand and foot movements. This martial art then spread to the Malacca peninsula area to the island of Java.

    He's right
40 years of training and I started with two combat vet instructors.
    Silat and Kali respectively
90% of what I learned can't be used in any sport under any circumstances.
I used it in the streets of Chicago.
That training and the fact that I'm ambidextrous and fighting is almost the only place where this is an advantage opened up a world of opportunities for me.
Got me dragged in front of a judge many times as well but self defense is self defense.

    • @josephmonkele5992

What were the differences you found between Silat and Kali? Does one of them have more of a focus on weapons than the other? Do you have any stories of yourself using either of these arts in self-defence that you'd be willing to give a play-by-play analysis of?

      I'd say it's the approach
Silat being empty hands that transitions to weapons and Kali being weapons that transitions to empty hands.
One of the worst situations regarding self defense was coming to the aid of a woman on the train platform. All I had was a Kubotan or palm stick keychain.
I intervened and they immediately attacked.
However them being right handed is a disadvantage I've been taking advantage of since before any training. Move to a certain side and they all react the same way. A quick body slam on the platform.
You ever heard the sound of a dislocated arm? It's louder than one expects. Unlike the movies they don't continue fighting after that.
The problem came when I rushed the last one and he did the usual tackle and ended up falling after he got hit in the temple with the palm stick keychain. Well that and I stomped the first idiot in the head.
There were cameras and my actions while noble were considered overkill.
It wasn't the guy falling but rather the head stomp that was considered an issue.
Honestly if either had died they probably would have tried sending me to prison.
Honestly the victim kept claiming it was racism because the two rapist were white and I'm a Native American.
In the end they called it self defense because even though they weren't attacking me initially there were two and they were both larger.
That was over 25 years ago

@@tonytomahawk5160 i cant imagine that theres situation that you will use silat to fight someone, i understand why you stomp one of your enemies head cause that is what silat do, to finish them off..
The more we train our body the more our body remember the moves and it will be like a natural reflect of the body to excecute some moves at certain situation without thinking, the problem is silat movement is really to kill the enemy, and stomping head will also become reflect movement, cause thats what youre training for..
Maybe if you use another martial art you can stop at just making them unable to fight or unconscious but if you use silat its lethal..

That's what I knew. That's what I was trained for by combat vet's to survive the reality of Chicago.
Two against me and both larger and possible armed is a pretty good reason to me.
To me stomping his skull in was just a normal part of eliminating a threat.
I never trained in sports fighting and honestly I didn't think I did anything wrong. Even when they showed me the video my first response was I held back so he should be alive so I don't see the problem.
However I've gained control as I aged so I do understand there were other things that I could have done but I still have the same mentality I was trained with. I still can't do the sports fighting thing though.
These days I train in things like Krav Maga just because it's less volatile than Silat.
But yeah Silat is to eliminate a threat by either dislocate break and kill.
I prefer peace but if violence is the choice then I will eliminate the threat.

While Silat's fluid hand movements may seem strange to an untrained eye, they are actually designed to anticipate and prevent attacks, disrupting the opponent before they can strike and turning their actions against them, seamlessly transitioning between striking and countering in real time.

The actual silat originated from South East Asia has many variants and names. However modern silat is divided into 4 types:
    1. Close to performing arts such as silat movements for show.
    2. Silat for sport, to make it non lethal and acceptable for point-base in competitions.
    3. Silat for self defence, the most popular type that mainly focuses on physical reactions to neutralise opponents with some harmful counter attacks.
    4. Silat for attack, permissable for a few selected student after mastering type 3 above. This type is too dangerous that may result to longterm disability or fatality and usually involving spiritual training. As of few years back, only the special military units of Indonesia & Malaysia were lucky to be trained in this ultimate silat.

Setelah silat terkenal didunia hasil dari kerja keras putera nydantara sejati/indonesia..eh beruk pecundang malingsia tiba2 ingin ikut termasyur..itulah yang disebut watak pecundang dari kumpulan beruk melayu palsu durhaka malingsia.
