I've been using TrackIR for MSFS for about a year now and it has definitely improved the overall experience. I would highly recommend it, especially if you have a full home cockpit setup with various peripherals such as the RSG 430/530 stack or Logitech FIPs, multipanel and radio stack. One recommendation that I have is that when setting up the TrackIR, you bind the pause and the re-center keys to buttons on your yoke/joystick.

I’ve owned Trackir for I don’t remember for how long now, and couldn’t fly without it. I also purchased VR some years ago as well and couldn’t believe how immersive VR made the simming experience. I flew VR for a long time exclusively and though I’d never go back to using a monitor. However, we moved house about a year ago and I didn’t quite have the space to set up the sensors so I’ve gone back to using Trackir 5 again. For me now the fidelity of the monitor and trackir is far more satisfying than the blurred experience of VR. So until VR can provide that same clarity especially in the cockpit, I’ll stay with Trackir.

FYI - the Varjo Aero is very close to monitor detail level. Aero is actually better for reading instruments because of the resolution of the headset combined with everything appearing much larger/closer in VR. Unfortunately at $2500 - $3000 for a complete setup it's out of reach for most consumers but it does bode well for the future of VR.

I really enjoy using trackir. Your review is spot on, but if I may add, be aware that sunlight can have a negative impact on the performance. I have two windows in my room that created havoc at first. I replaced the window shades with light blocking style. Depending on the time of day, I can adjust the shades to keep trackir working perfectly. Enjoy your flights!!!

Track-iR5 and Meta Quest 2 user here. As has been said, there is nothing better than VR for immersion. It's simply amazing and adds just an incredible amount of realism. If your hardware supports it, get it. Head tracking is also a game changer, however you don't get quite the feel for being in the aircraft, but it does make flying and usage much more natural. On long flights wearing the VR headset can get uncomfortable, something that is negligible with a cap or headset supporting Track-iR. I have the Trak clip pro as well as the standard clip, and have no issues using the clip in my basement room with 4 sunlight bulbs. Once you've configure and tweaked the Track-iR settings you're all set, as SimHanger mentioned.

I went with a Tobii Eye tracker5 , for me personally I find it much better than TrackIR. No wires, no hats, just attaches to the bottom of the screen, job done. With MSFS, it's absolutely seamless because there is no software to download (plug it in, Windows Update installs the drivers) and all the config is done in-sim. Downside is that it's expensive, but comparing it to my TrackIR, it's worth it.

Head tracking has its benefits, but VR is hands-down the most realistic experience to be had. I fly in VR almost exclusively these days. There is no greater sense of immersion to be had. The only reason I would consider head tracking over VR is only as a temporary stop-gap while VR developers get serious about VR and develop virtual desktops that work well with MSFS. If you use 3rd party, stand-alone tools when flying (and what serious simmer doesn’t), then VR becomes cumbersome, having no real way of utilizing those tools in the VR environment, instead having to peak out of your goggles to use your desktop. That’s where head-tracking shines, enabling you to freely use a second monitor to use your utilities, and allowing you to scan your cockpit and horizon without fumbling with shortcut keys to get the view you desire. However, to reiterate, there simply is nothing more convincing of realism than VR. There is nothing more satisfying than the sense of true 3 dimensionality that has you reaching out your hand to grab your throttle and it actually being there. I’m watching this video to gain yet another fresh perspective on the merits of head tracking, because I’ve recently stumbled on a utility that I’d really like to use that doesn’t exist in the VR environment (Pilot 2 ATC). LittleNavMap is another great tool that cannot be accessed in VR as far as I know. Another benefit of headtracking is that it is relatively inexpensive and easy to set up, so it might be a good choice for anyone who presently does not have the budget (or horsepower) to run VR.

FYI - the Varjo Aero has a feature called "Application Background" that allows you to use your desktop within VR. You can freely scale and place the monitor view and place it where you want. Keyboard and mouse input are directed to the desktop while HOTAS/Joystick inputs are routed to MSFS. The buttons on the side of the headset can be used to quickly switch focus between the desktop and MSFS (basically turning the desktop overlay on/off).
      I discuss it here th-cam.com/video/mytxLArmBm4/w-d-xo.html

    Benefit's vs VR are:
    - COST. To get into VR, I'd be spending $4k on a new PC + $1k for a Reverb headset.
    - it runs well on old PC's like my i7 6700k/980Ti..
    - it's less physically tiring, not 1 to 1, even if its not as realistic.
    - you can refer to your notes on paper without having to constantly lift/lower a headset whilst learning a study level sim such as DCS-A10.
While I do intend to move to VR at some point, I don't see the point of spending $4.5k until I can max out graphics with good FPS.

I used TrackIR back in the early 2000s. Unfortunately, if you have only one eye, and a narrow field of vision, TrackIR won't be for you. I was only able to turn my head about 5 degrees, and then the monitor went out of my field of vision. I did try adjusting the sensitivity, but things got a bit wonky, from there. As long as you have a wide enough field of vision, you won't have any problems with TrackIR. It tided me over for a while. I'm just barely able to use a VR headset, as my acuity is also very low, which makes reading some menus nearly impossible. However, I can still use VR in FS2020, and X-Plane, no problem. Just no depth perception, as I only see with one eye. Thanks for sharing this. Glad to know TrackIR is still developing their product.

Tobii is another great product which is an eye tracker which works excellently. No headset nor baseball cap required. I bought it for Xplane11 not having checked to see that that specific game wasn't supported. But it worked on my racing sims and Arma: Amazing. Had to remove the tracking bar when I moved to an ultrawide curved monitor some time ago because it didn't fit well on curved monitors. Now that I just "moved" to MSFS2020 last week I have to figure out a way to settle the bar to my monitor because MSFS2020 is a compatible game for Tobii.

Great tutorial Mark. I've used TrackIR with the IR TrackClip Pro for years. With a 48 inch 4K HDR LG48C1 as a monitor I prefer it to my G2 because of the edge to edge sharpness. For such a big monitor I had to mount the TrackClip Pro vertically on the top band of my Arctis 9 headphones like an antenna 🤣. Works brilliantly. You can remove the tiny strip on the back of the TrackClip Pro and squeeze two tiny tabs gently, then turn the arm with the LEDs to get it into this orientation.

VR is excellent as we know and TrackIR is also excellent. I have had TrackIR for years and wouldnt do without it. I have a wireless rechargeable track clip for TrackIR so there are no wires to my headset. Looks exactly like the boxed TrackIR pro clip minus the wire. Cost me around £70 if I remember but is absolutely excellent and a game changer for ease of use. All have their benefits but for general everyday use it is hard to look past trackIR - excellent for DCS too. Tobii I think is more useful with the likes of ETS2, racing games etc (albeit sometimes I use it with MSFS, DCS etc) and VR is for pretty much everything that you want it to be for :-). For versatility etc TrackIR is hard to beat. As for cost - yes it is expensive but at the end of the day you get what you pay for. Tobii 5 is far more expensive but not as versatile as TrackIR and doesnt always have 6 DOF. Not to say other systems are not good but as you point out in the video setting up other solutions can often be more hassle than its worth whereas TrackIR is very, very easy and durable. I personally cant do 2 or more hours in a VR headset and find i get fatigued with long periods of use wheras TrackIR you barely know its there. No doubt VR is best but outside VR it's hard to look any further than TrackIR in my opinion plus not everyone has a system that can provide enough resources for VR whereas TrackIR can be used on virtually any system.

I've tried Opentrack with a Logitech c910 webcam I had lying around, and though it is a free alternative, I found it too hard to get the tracking and configuration of sensitvity working well for me in DCS. Moved to TrackIR recently, and though the tech is old, it still works very well considering other options

Hi Brett! I had the same problem. I bought some large black trashcan bags. Cut them to fit the window and use tape to hold in place of the entire window. Looks like hell, but no more mirror of your window in your Monitor I hope this helps! Happy flying in the daytime! It also makes a great conversation piece when people come over to visit!

I had the same problem - this was my crazy solution: I went to Walmart and bought a couple of large sheets of that black corrugated poster-board. Then I bought some PVC pipe and fittings from the Big Orange store and built a fixture/stand to hold the poster-board (like a projector screen?). Several nice things about it: 1) I can position it right behind my chair and it not only 'fixes' the TrackIR, but it removes all of the glare/reflections from my monitors too. 2) Since it doesn't cover the window, it still lets lots of light into the room. 3) I can move it anywhere I want - even into another room if I'm having issues with glare in there. 4) It comes apart in seconds so I can hide it in a closet if I want to. 5) It's pretty inexpensive when compared to other window cover options. Bonus: 6) It makes a nice background for Zoom calls - I don't want people to see my messy room anyway!
Full disclosure: My window DOES have a mini-blind on it. But even when it's closed, it still messes with the TrackIR and causes annoying glare/reflections on my monitors. The screen I built works perfectly though! 🙂

So I am thinking about a 55" screen which is just about the width of my Cessna 172 Sim. Does 55" make sense or I could go with smaller or 2 32" screens side by side. What do you think? Thanks.

I tried a DIY setup a year or more ago. The trouble I had, was that as your head moves, you have to keep your eyes on the monitor, so you're always looking sideways. Triple screens may help that when looking to the sides, but looking up or down, your eyes have to stay on the screen while your head moves.

    1. Is there a minimum distance ? I have... umm... rather unique needs so my facae is about 20 to 30 centimeters away from the screen. Does TrackIR work at that range when using the Pro Clip ?
    2. If not, would it be possible to mount it elsewhere, like at a 45 degree angle from your head (on a cupboard next to the monitor, for example) ?
    3. Do you keep the camera on your monitor all the time ? I would only mount it on a need-to basis when flying. Would that mean a lenghty recalibraiton process every time I mount it ?
Thank you in advance for your help.
