When I saw this video about a month ago, I started doing this to my broken controllers and it worked temporarily, what I’ve been finding is the track or black rings on the potentiometer actually get worn down, not just dirty, so cleaning doesn’t help much. Long story short I’m stuck in the rabbit hole now and bought all the soldering equipment and I’m teaching myself how to replace the entire analog stick 😮 fixing gaming controllers has become my new game lol
Thank you!! The only thing I would advise people is to use tweezers on the ribbon cables, and if your drift is Left/Righ (like mine was) you have to open and clean the green square on Top, the one removed in the video is for Up/Down Thank you again!!!
Really useful. Had 3 controllers with the issue. First took 30 mins of careful work, and constant video rewinds. Second took 20 minutes with a few video pauses. 3rd I did by myself in less than 15mins. Thanks for the help. I'm now stuck fixing all my relatives controllers aswell.
@@javonpage1765 i just did this method today and I'm not sure if its fixed for good or if it'll start drifting again. One thing i noticed in this vid was it looked to be a bunch of hair like fibers (maybe from pet fur?) in and around the circuits of the joystick. You definitely want to get those out because they could potentially get inside the potentiometer and screw with the contacts. Mine in particular had an insane amount of drift and static on my right stick. I also used a #2 pencil to draw along the inner contacts (not too sharp of a pencil you don't want to scratch it) to help with conductivity. Been playing off and on all day and no drift. Giving it more time tho. I also got some of that wd40 contact cleaner.
Great tutorial, however, I’d recommend a slightly gentler touch. When removing ribbon cables, a rolling motion using blunt-tipped pliers is generally safer. When opening the cover to reveal the wiper disc, it’s better to use a twisting motion to pry on each side, rather than using brute force to pry at the top. This will easily release the tiny locking clips and minimise the likelihood of over-bending the 3 pins soldered to the board (making them susceptible to breaking when closing it back up). This also helps ensure that the wiper disc doesn’t become “airborne”. The cover need only be pried open far enough to remove the wiper disc (~20° or so). When removing the wiper disc from the cover, I (again) strongly recommend using a plastic spudger - a light pluck will pop that sucker right out. I’d recommend replacing your cotton swabs with a lint-free variety. After thorough cleaning of disc and contact area, it is important to re-grease prior to reuniting the two - the grease you cleaned away was actually there by design to reduce friction between disc and contact. Any silicone based grease will do. The disc should be properly replaced into the cover, then closed. A bit long-winded, I know - but finesse will make your life so much easier and, ultimately, exemplify your skill and craftsmanship. Hope this helps!

Hi I have a problem with my PS4 controller when i go to a PS4 menu or when I am in a game my joystick goes left automatically and when I put my joystick to the right it goes left I find this really annoying do you know how to fix this?
When cleaning my contacts, after a closer look, I realized they were also oxidized, so I also had to carefully scrap the oxidation off the contacts with a piece of metal, working so far ...
Followed EVERYTHING step by step & paused at certain parts if the video was going to fast… And now I cant look up and down just left to right and in circles 😐
I only did the first part, taking off the black cover. Then sprayed some Dust remover on the left joystick. It helped a bit but it's never going to be perfect. i need another controller...probably not a Sony the next time.
WARNING NOTE: this only fixes the problem for an hour or two😂 The reason its drifting lies in the potentiometers, u HAVE TO desolder the two potentiometers and resolder on two new ones, SOLDERING THOSE ARE VERY EASY, u just cut both the potentiometers into 3 pieces, and u can pull the pins out one by one👍
I have stick drift on 2 controllers already, much faster than any other console, even though playstation controllers have always been prone to it. also, why don't they make opening their controllers easier? They must know it will inevitably stick drift
So it turns out just banging something on the joystick hard multiple times works. I’m not even kidding. Used an air duster can to bang on the joystick now it’s working again
I fixed my first controller I tried fixing my blue controller as well and it don’t work at all which is crazy I did everything thing the exact same watched the video while doing it
Seems like I’m joining the ones who ended up breaking their controller. Guys, don’t use cotton swabs, a paper towel would be much better. I used a cotton swab and the fiber got caught in one of the gold prongs on the removable white sensor part. I tried to pull it free, but it ended up twisting the prong crooked. The gold parts of the sensor are very very delicate, and can easily bend in all sorts of ways if you’re not careful
So now I opened mine and now my stick feel stuck on one side what do I do did I break it I opened potenchometer and took the white thing out to clean and now it feels stuck please help
Yea but I did it with my scuf and when I put the one of the white thing back, my character was looking up which means that maybe the white thing broke or something
I have your solution, You have the white piece upsidedown, The round side of the plastic has to be facing upwards, and the angled sides down. I also put mine upside down and it was doing what you described. So I opened it and flipped it and now it was in the way it came out.
I bought 6 new pot meters , hot air soldering station, kapton tape and flux. All together cheaper than a new controller. The above video is a temporary solution , eventually you have to put in new potentiometers
My one had the same problem, I did everything he showed on the video, but didn't work. Then I bought a kit of welding for £25 and a potentiometer pack with 10 of them for £5. After that I learned from some videos how to do it. Then did it by myself and worked.

the analog moves like a car wiper preventing the down & up key with a worse drift
I did everything as the video did, but i screwed up...
Did all this exactly right and now my stick is ten times worse than it was
Same. First it made my right stick permanently face upwards and now my controller wont even turn on.
I lost one of the screws put them back together but still lost one of them
worked for me, thank you sir!
How to repair analog a little stuck?
Hi I have a problem with my PS4 controller when i go to a PS4 menu or when I am in a game my joystick goes left automatically and when I put my joystick to the right it goes left I find this really annoying do you know how to fix this?
Just get a new one your ps4 remote is gone
@@jdm_boi8317 how do you know it's finished
What happens if it dose get stuck
When cleaning my contacts, after a closer look, I realized they were also oxidized, so I also had to carefully scrap the oxidation off the contacts with a piece of metal, working so far ...
If u think I’m doin surgery on my controller, ya havin a laugh
2:00 just snaps the latches off, yikes
When I took it apart I put another white plate from old broken ps4 controller. They look the same. It has been working perfectly for 10 days now.
Super helpful! Thank you!
tips for aligning the green part?
It didn't click in but green part is in place no drfit for now atleast
WARNING NOTE: this only fixes the problem for an hour or two😂 The reason its drifting lies in the potentiometers, u HAVE TO desolder the two potentiometers and resolder on two new ones, SOLDERING THOSE ARE VERY EASY, u just cut both the potentiometers into 3 pieces, and u can pull the pins out one by one👍
Correct.
I have stick drift on 2 controllers already, much faster than any other console, even though playstation controllers have always been prone to it. also, why don't they make opening their controllers easier? They must know it will inevitably stick drift
Thank you
Uhh it didn't work for me
Edit: it works but after the fourth time
So it turns out just banging something on the joystick hard multiple times works. I’m not even kidding. Used an air duster can to bang on the joystick now it’s working again
Great video though man I'm just
this worked for me... thanks
Controller won’t turn on after putting it back together….
You didn’t plug the battery in all the way trust me I’ve done this alot
The inside of my controller was differ to yours. Maybe it was a different model.
Thx a lot 🙌
I fixed my first controller I tried fixing my blue controller as well and it don’t work at all which is crazy I did everything thing the exact same watched the video while doing it
Didn’t work unfortunately just have to get a new controller
Same
Thx 🙏
should i put a grease on or not ?
Put poop on it
Seems like I’m joining the ones who ended up breaking their controller.
I think you both put too much force opening it
I have your solution, You have the white piece upsidedown, The round side of the plastic has to be facing upwards, and the angled sides down. I also put mine upside down and it was doing what you described. So I opened it and flipped it and now it was in the way it came out.
Worked
Thankyou saved me $79.99 + tax first time ever trying this tutorial and I did it perfectly with your Guide I talked you up
I bought 6 new pot meters , hot air soldering station, kapton tape and flux. All together cheaper than a new controller.
The above video is a temporary solution , eventually you have to put in new potentiometers
I did the exactly same thing. I recommend a lot
I do step by step and my left joystick still moving to left by it self
I think I’m going to buy a new one it’s annoying play like that!!
My one had the same problem, I did everything he showed on the video, but didn't work. Then I bought a kit of welding for £25 and a potentiometer pack with 10 of them for £5. After that I learned from some videos how to do it. Then did it by myself and worked.
