    I just bought a bass boat z18 a week ago.. never been on a boat,driven a boat, used a trolling motor, never seated shotgun,ect. Only boat I've been on was a ferry.. TH-cam has helped me tons.. I did not know there was an engine break in procedure until I bought the boat.. did a lot of research and I'm 2hour in the break in the last 2 I'm going to do when the wind calms down as to I'm new on unloading and loading the boat.. but I did well I think. I have common sense head on right and a fast learner..

    My understanding of the purpose of break in was to slowly bring up to temperature and slowy bring it back down ober and over

    I've seen so many people not properly break in there outboard. It runs fine the first season. Sounds fine the 2nd season but usually drops 5 mph or so.

    Just buy an ETEC and skip the break in! The part of the break in that hurts is when you take it back to the dealer for the 20 hour service.

    I was only able to get into the stage at 1.45 hours at 3K R/PM and had to pack up for the day. Can I finish my last stage of 4K R/PM in the morning like I had planned?
    Also for the most part I stayed at 3K for 1.45 hrs with maybe 10-15 minutes of reduced idle all together in that whole time, is this also ok? Thanks! Mine is a 2021 Suzuki 70 outboard.

    While yes Evenruide has no break in period, they cost several thousands more in my area. Suzuki has the best price i have found for a 200hp motor. The break-in must be done in order for the warranty to be valid. I will take a 4 stroke anyday, and as far as weight goes it seems all the engines weigh pretty close to the same these days. The lightest was a Mercury, by about 15 lbs. Etec is in the middle of the pack on weight, plus etecs are a 6 cycl vs the 4 strokes being a 4 cycl. $15,500 for a Suzuki 200hp, vs $21+ for a 200 ETEC.

  • @takayama1638
    @takayama1638 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Dealer should go over that! That means for a Suzuki, maybe others except Evinrude, you have to spend at least two days just breaking the thing in?! I'm for Evinrude. Not just for no break in, but for cleaner running than a 4 stroke, no 5-6 quarts of oil, filter, valves, cams, rods, etc. The future is in 2 stroke outboards. I know, I know, all the hype from about 5-15 years ago was about nothing but 4 strokes from then on, but that is old news! Old. Future is with 2 stroke engine design for outboards. And Evinrude, a North American company (!) leads.

    a tad of ams oil in the fuel mix? (I realize its a 4 stroke)
    a good quality synthetic oil mixed in the fuel will help those piston rings slowly seat rather than raw gas.
    I always used a generous splash of ams oil (in my Mod VP 270...2 stroke)
    Fouled plugs?
    Cheaper to repair than scortched rings.
    If you can get it, aviation fuel twice a season?
    why not; "Factory Break ins"? just sayin"

    ............. more problems with engines that are "babied" ; Ride it like a rental! ;-) , also make sure you are not running synthetic in the first break in cycle as it hinders proper seating.

    • @chrisgerbino854
      @chrisgerbino854 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Vivian Vazquez ,said it as good as it can get,run it like you rented it. 4 strokes need to be broken in hard,the rings are hard and you get one chance to do it. Just vary the rpm's like you would naturally. Absolutely don't baby it out of the box,worst thing you can do. The manufacturer wants you to baby it because if there was a catastrophic failure at lower rpm's they may be able to repair it,unlike if it's going wot the damage would be unfixable. Remember, read the manual carefully, it says they suggest you break it in they way they want,it never says you have to. They want you to baby it for liability issues only. I have verified this with many merc people. Also think for a second,how can a 2 stroke and 4 stroke have the exact same break in ,there 2 totally different machines but the manuals say do it the same,nonsense.

    If you don't follow the break in procedures to a tee and then have an issue the manufacturer will know as soon as they tap into the OBD port. They can see every second of run time during break in and afterwards. Then your new shiney expensive outboard repairs will be on you.

    it s easy to see four strokes are much more durable for any type of commercial or heavy use . they simply last longer and run many more hours then the light built two cycle engines. if that wasn't the case we would have two stroke cars . lawn mowers generator s ect.

    • @TheMustangman17
      @TheMustangman17 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Catfish Edge you might want to do your research. Evinrudes are 2 strokes not 4 strokes there's a big difference in so many way between 2 and 4 stroke that's one.

    • @Catfishedge
      @Catfishedge  9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Tyler York I am aware that the Evinrude motors are 2 stroke motors. I've seen statements that they can be run wide open with no break in. I've also spoken with numerous people who've said there is still a break in suggested and they'd never skip the break in.
      .

    • @daltonbeal1720
      @daltonbeal1720 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tyler York still ether way there is a brake in procedure so the ring can get seated. You (the customer) probably don’t have to do any break because evinrude does it at the factory, probably.

      8 to 10,000 hours? My old 25 hp 4 stroke required way more work and maintaince than my 25 etec has and i only put 200 hours on my 4 joke before i sold it. My 25 etec and 200 etec have around 400 hours on them now and only service it's ever needed is the lower gear unit oil changed. 4's need camshafts, valves checked oil changes, ect. Dont get me wrong 4 stroke engines are great in certain applications like the auto industry but when it comes to outboards, dirtbikes and sleds I don't see the advantages. 2's are lighter, faster, more torque and overall less money to own and operate.

    • @brandonmurphy8837
      @brandonmurphy8837 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Stephen Salter 400 hours is a Month of use commercially that's nothing . I have had two honda s and a Suzuki that have ran over town thousand hours without even a valve adjustment. etec will simply not stand up to that type of use . still waiting to see one with ten thousand hours. used etec s 3/4 years old are everywhere

    • @stephensalter2098
      @stephensalter2098 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Brandon Murphy i live in in Canada where the adverage boater is lucky to put a 100 hours a year on their motors so for me to hit 6000+ hours would take 30+ years of use. But I've read on plenty of boating forms from etec owners that have had 4000+ hours of trouble free boating on their etecs. I think your mistaking the early years of the etecs 2005-2007 which had some issues due to the new technology at the time but they have long since then worked out any flaws.

    • @takayama1638
      @takayama1638 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Stephen, exactly! It's like trying to talk to an old tile man about epoxy grout; they about break down and cry if you mention using epoxy grout! Stuck in the past like many 4 stroke boys. Evinrude has indeed worked out those early problems, especially that FICHT (or some such) mess they had. I was just at a Mercury/Yamaha dealer, and the old boy is stuck thinking the future is 4 stroke! He doesn't realize that Evinrude even passes California emissions standards, the cleanest burning outboards made. Simple, durable design. I don't even own one, but I do my research.
