Thank you so much for this tutorial. Very straight to the point, highly educational, and easy to follow. The examples you give are perfect and I can honestly say that I now know the exact prop for my boat after watching this. If your shop was local to me, you would certainly have a new client for life. Keep up the great work guys!

i use to have 3 props for my boat . low pitch for fast acceleration went getting skiers up and/or heavy loads. medium pitch for all round use and a higher pitch when going out in to the Ocean because it go a LOT better gas mileage and range. Range is very important on the Ocean.duh

Hi i wonder if I can ask you 1 thing.
Have a holland steel boat about 12 tonns.
New was whit 60 70hp and i dont know gearbox aksel and propeller.
Upgraded 1996 to volvo penta tmd31A ore tmd31B.
Papers on both in a 1 ownder sens 1981.
But this new propeller is wrong i belive..
Aksel goes stright back and on to a propeller.
I do have exact propeller diameter way, and I belive this pitch. Not really shure.
But I am out traveling whit the boat, but not in boat now.
But if you can help me whit ur knowdleg and smart brain, I send it to you all info i have.
Problem is when them goes from 60 70 ore 80hp 3selyndret diesel, TO A VOLVO PENTA DIESEL TMD31A.
Them sey from penta it is "probably" right.
But them alsow telling me that ore this spesific diesel engine goes lowest on diesel in like 3600RPM. YES 3600 RPM.
Have tryed that, but thats sucks and when i hsve had 100eds of diesel cars and engine over the time, I like it more about 1800 to 2400 at max.
1800 to 2200 is the same speed in knots. But low like 5.0 knots .
If I goes babans and drive 2400 ore say max 2500rpm. It will make 6 knots.
But some are noy right here i belives.
Can i get your thinking of this now after see ur awsome video ????
There is a tumb of roul that have to Spear so much spare over topp of propeller to floor of boat.
I think i heard this in european COUNTRIES hsve to be 10 centimeter??? From topp of blade to hull of boat ????
Maby more pitsh so i lower rpm more and can drive at 1800rpm like all european fishing boats ????
My boat is holland curtevene 950.
    9.5 meter. 32 33 feet ?
It is a famely cruiser ore famely hollydays boat.
I Just made it over to cabin/aparmant on the sea. And pensjonist cos of a broken back.
So my dream for 19 years now have bean traveling down european waterways from norway to MIDELTERAINEN and around there.
And as a 40 year of have hsd diesel trucks and cars. IT GETS HARD FOR ME TO USE RPM THATS PAPER SAYS.
HAVE TO BE BETTER WHIT LOWER RPM ???
    AND WHIT SAVING OF DIESEL???
PAPER FOR ENGINE ACTUALY SAYS GOES LOWEST CONSUME AT 3600RPM.
BUT THIS HAVE TO BE IN A PLANER BOAT ?????
SHULD BELIVE LOWER RPM MAKES LOWER CONSUME ???
    I CAN BE WERY WRONG.
BUT HOPE YOU CAN SHARE SOME OF UR THINKINGS ????
HEAVY BOAT AT 12 TONNS ABOUT THAT ZISE.
BUT NO ONES CAN MAKD ME ANY RECOMENDINGS ORE ANYTHING.
SO NOW I KROSS MY FINGERS THAT YOU CAN GIVR ME SOME POINTERS.
WILL HAVE ALL SPEC AT ENGINE AND PROPELLER LITTLE LATER TO DAY.
AND NOW I AM IN HOLLAND THAT HAVE SOLAS PROPELLERS FOR SALES.
ANOTHER ONE, HAVE PROPELLERS MADE HUGE INPROVMENTS LAST YEARS??
I KNOW MOTOR THST WAS HERE BEFORE 60 70 HP ABOUT. SAY 80 TO BE SAFE.
BUT THEM SOLD ALL WHEN VOLVO PENTA WHIT PENTA GEARBOX SHAFT AND PROPELLER NON ONE CAN TELL ME HOW IT SHOULD BE.
ALSOW GEARBOX I DONT KNOW HOW THIS IS GEARED TOGETHER.
THATS SAYS ON THE GEARBOX MABY ????
I REALLY HOPE YOU ONE OF THIS DAYS IN FUTURE CAN GIVE me some pointer.
Will see after ur coment daily 😂🎉😂❤❤❤
Propp is 21 i tvink left Turned and some number for pitsh.
Have had some boats before. But use to go BETWEEN 6 7 8.
Not down in 4.5 to 5 on normal power.
If gives more power, the ladys Ass just going down and ur diesel consume gets way up there.
And all boat yards and shop all say strange, cos over power motor and still slow and not up BETWEEN 6 8 them say them belived i would get to be in that range.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes. Some useful information here presented with a good dose of BS. His description of "Forged" is incorrect. Cast would be correct as forged is a stamping process. Cast is a pouring of hot metal into a mold. Big difference! Silica in Aluminum does not necessarily effect the "flex" of a metal especially in a prop with such a short cord. Certainly if over done but his statement that a prop can be made cheaply by adding excess silica is silly. There just isn't enough material in a boat prop to make that much difference. It's the name on the prop that drives the cost up. Period! He never mentioned things such a cupping which can easily solve cavitation problems and solve that "hole shot" thing he constantly described while maintaining top end speed. (To some extent) I'm sure these points and others have been made below but who reads beyond the first page of any TH-cam video?

    • @johnmcgovern3806

Good information .It is so hard to get folks to understand the truth. Everything is a trade-off in regards to performance. Nailed it. Only caveat OEM Aluminum props are Cast (exactly what process is ??) Liquid metal into a mold is cast. Solid using thermal and mechanical is forged. Those cheap props ? Cheap cast pieces welded together , not sure what to call that. Besides junk.

Forged metal is pounded into shape. Cast metal is poured into molds.

  • @carmelpule6954
    @carmelpule6954 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

At 13:13, he says, " This is what we call a forged propeller".
As far as I remember, forging is heating it and bashing it with a hammer to form it.
Casting is a case of melting the metal and pouring it into a mold. This is the manner they make propellers either gravity fed sand molds or ceramic molds with a wax replacement or injection systems.

I've got a 17 ft boat with a 50 HP 2 stroke I'm happy with the wot rpm and top speed (5600rpm and 21 knots) but the hole shot is so bad, takes over 15s to plane, it bogs down at 9 knots and about 3 K rpm and just slowly climbs untill about 13 knots it suddenly jumps to 5 K rpm the nose is down ect , it's a 1.(5 gear ratio and I've put a 10 pitch prop on it

Very good video ive owned 17or 18 boats so far always used O,E, M. Props prefer Aluminum as a safety feature of sacrificing a prop tp save my outdrive or lower end My preference has been inboard /outboard Mervruiser or Yamaha outboards yet ive had good luck with Nissan/Io gatsu products as well for overall reliability and maintenance although they aren’t the fastest motors in their class they have been a good value to me Ive always stressed the same thing to my freinds about the numbers on props you will. Gain one but lose the other in the process many of my boats hav been Ski boats for myself and my family as A Florida jud Waterskiing was a passion and as i got older i enjoyed a lot of wakeboarding as it was easier on my knees

Very good video. Just for your information to Forged is the process of hammering a piece of red hot steel. As a blacksmith would hammer out a horse shoe.
Propellers are made in a foundry by melting aluminum or stainless steel and pouring it into a mold.
Many propellers and and hand guns are made in a molding process called loss the wax method or investment casting.
I'm sure there are videos on TH-cam about this process.
    Not trying to knit pick
A lot of people are confused with the difference between foundry an forge.
Once again thanks for the great video,

I have a 2017 Sun Tracker 20ft fishing barge and I need to replace my prop. The current prop is eaten up by gravel. This was my “learning” prop, as I’m new to boat ownership. The motor is a 2017 90 ELPT CT 4S with a 16” x 13p p/n: 78114A45. I’m considering moving up to a 14” x 12p p/n: 8M0084491 4 blade prop. The pontoon holds 10 people and I constantly have 10 people, mostly large adults. Do you think that would be a good prop choice?

Hello, what type (3 or 4 balded) and which pitch (17 or 19) PROP would You recomend for a 1988 Bayliner 2250 Cobra with 5.7 (loaded weight 3KP) it has 260 HP ? I was searching at www for an answer for a long time and looks there is no real one answer. At the moment we do use 3blade 17 pitch and thinking going for 4blade 19pitch - we do think that would save some RPM and fuel consumption at the "cruising range". The question remain, wont we overload the engine ? what would be Your recomendation ? Thank You for Your help. Best regards from Europe.

I currently have a mercury 150 4 stroke with a 14.5 x 19 mercury black max prop. I'm having issues with control at WOT. Chine walking.... I am near the top of the rev range but may have a LITTLE room to go up in RPM. I found a 13 x 18 pitch stainless. I'm wondering if this would help with control? My boat is a 19' bowrider but has a shallow vee. It seems lighter than my old boat which was a 1991 with a 4 cyl 3L Cobra and it was only a 17'. The boat currently does about 52 mph wide open so I probably can afford to lose a few mph.

So what is the correct size and pitch etc prop for a 1993 Maxum 1800 sr with 4.3 liter and alpha one gen 2 outdrive. I bought the boat in the fall and it had a very chewed up prop. It was an aluminum prop and I had to file it off to get the chewed up parts cleaned up enough to even test drive the boat. It seemed to have a vibration so we didn't push it too hard but it seemed really poor out of the hole so I didn't want to put any trust into the prop size that is on it.

    Hi Tom,
We are creating a 'kayak' site for marine/boating parts and accessories to help people find the best deal vs. having to go to lots of individual stores to research - we may also provide links to content on youtube such as yours so people can also get advice.
What do you think about this idea? Do you think it is a good idea for yourself/your audience? We would like to get some feedback before we get too far down the road.
If you do like it, is it the kind of site that you would feel comfortable advising your audience to check out?
    Thanks!
    Cheers,
    Steven

A bad pitch generic prob like Michigan Wheel or Solas is just as bad as a bad pitched OEM prop on your boat...correctly pitched for you boat, a generic prop will perform just as nice as a OEM prop but will cost you less money. I'm not buying the OEM prop rhetoric.

If that was the case, how can you get a 12-1/2" DIA. prop in an 8", 13" and 15" pitch? ...it is still a 12.5" Dia prop.

So here’s my new plan. I’m going to go to my local marina and just tell them what I want to happen when I throttle my boat and simply say “ make it happen”!
I’m sorta kidding and sorta not. This guy is really great at explaining stuff and he actually made me understand stuff I really don’t care to understand. I’m simply too busy being the best at what I do so I’d rather leave this stuff to the pros. Hi. I like the truth you speak Sir. My question to you is do you have a prop for a 1986 85 horse 3 cyl, Merc Force engine. I could not find a prop number no place on it. But it looks more of a 12 inch then a 10. It is a aluminum prop. Better yet could you please sell me your preference on a prop. But now I did transfer the engine to a 1964 Sea King 15 foot boat. I had to use everything from the 17 foot Bayliner. My prop is chipped so very badly. I won't run it this way. Also I may need an impeller kit. It hasn't been run since 2002. I've bought the boat recently. Yes please always OEM from you. Or could I send my prop to you by mail? I build Custom motorcycles, not boats. So I know very little about boats. But I do compare my videos. Thank you.

The aluminum prop is NOT FLEXING enough to LOSE 25% !! Put a prop in a hydraulic press and bend it 25% and it will STAY BENT if not SHATTER from the abuse. The Stainless prop is more expensive and thus has a BETTER PROFILE just as the OEM props have a better design than the "Grey" generic props.

    Hey Family Marine!,
I have a 31ft. IMP Eleganza with two 454's, transmissions, and TRSdrives. 4,800rpms is about the limit on these. I've been running the stock Mercury Cleavers, right hnd., and left hnd. (1985)boat.
I hear from a number of sources that Mercury Mirage Plus 23p is a good idea to start with for better performance all around. Supposed to be faster on plain and better top end, so what do you think? I'd like to look at a graph and see if this is corroborated. Are there listings for older boats (stock) that relate to the newer tec. props.
I've heard TRSdrives can handle some more pitch that 23's, (Mirage Plus), if they, (the outdrives), are in good shape. Gonna rebuild them nice sometime this fall say, and have the gears & shafts cryo-hardened!

Want more overall performance? Incredible Hole Shot with Blazing Top Speed? Go with a Stainless 30 pitch prop and Nitrous!!! The torque of the big block engines will turn those props while on a plane, the nitrous is only for hole shot to get on plane, adds about 100hp to each engine. When used briefly for hole shots no damage is done in the motor, that's only if held on until block overheats. Fix the actuator switch to the throttle 7/8 or better it's activated. Cruise at 5/8 throttle. We've done more than 50 boats this way, ultimate performers!

      @@ceisarsrepair7958,
Thank you for the ideas. I've heard of some guys running higher 20's, and a guy that runs 30pitch's on there-his TRS's!
I'm gonna work these Mirage Plus 23's this year, then maybe experiment when I make everything back there stronger!
Probably next year for higher pitch experimentation! :)
Nitrous, (or blowers, or turbos), might be OK for my motors, but NOT for my Borg-Warner gear boxes right now! They are probably my weak link. Much more power now, their plates will just spin and get roaches out! I'm gonna rebuild them with carbon fiber packs this fall though! Outdrives I'm gonna rebuild too. Gonna have a good company in Chicago that I trust cryo-harden shafts & gears then, so long as them gears aren't too bad. That makes these TRS'S good for some more power I'm hearing. Way higher pitch, though. I think I'd have to get some high-end lowers! Some day, maybe, and I can raise my "X" dimension with them then, I guess.
Gonna put blowers on the 454's,
probably cheaper than scammin-up some 502's or bigger. My compression is stock (8 1/2 - 1), that's good for blowers, so I'll be thinkin that way. Haven't ever put Nitrous on anything! That could be cool! Gonna start lookin into that! Thanks for the ideas again!

    • @ceisarsrepair7958
      @ceisarsrepair7958 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@oldnick4707 one thing you can do this year is just get the nitrous "cheater" kits, low cost, instal them and the high pitch prop. "Ease" on the throttle smoothly as you reach 7/8 where the nitrous helps you, just don't snap the throttle (like dumping the clutch in a car) that's what breaks components. We've had Alpha 2 outdrives withstand 1,200hp blown hemis, just smooth application of power, no snappy snap. You'll totally enjoy this summer for cheap. Nitrous is not some Explosive Volatile Rocket Fuel like most people think, I'ts simply a gas that breaks up the atomization of your existing fuel and makes your existing fuel burn more efficiently. Also be sure to go to your local small airport for 101 octane. 1 last thing (sorry😁), get a set of trim tabs or good hydrofoil fins for the drives. They cut your planing effort in half and increase top speed efficiency and turning by getting that hull up and out of the water as quick as possible. We did an experiment with a 21 foot cuddy cabin bayliner with a Mercruiser 5.0, we put a 35hp outboard on the kicker motor bracket. It took everything the 5.0 could do to get on plane, took over 60 seconds. Once on plane, we lowered the 35hp and started it, went to 3/4 throttle and lifted the 5.0 outdrive out of the water and shut it down, no drag. We not only stayed on plane but at full throttle we increased speed to 31mph.... with only 35hp!. This proved that all that horsepower is mismanaged just trying to get on plane, it can do so much more once on plane. That's why the 2 speed prop was designed and such a huge hit!
      Have a Great Day!

I have actually a Mercury 150 hp VERADO 2008 on my 18 ft Crestliner Super Hawk 1800 boat driven by a Mercury 4 blades propeller # OA2184X 18P . I’ve always been satisfied. But I’m about to buy a Ranger 1850 MS equipped with a 150 proXS. The boat comes with a stainless-steel 17” prop but I prefer an aluminium propeller since I often go into shallow water (I had to change the propeller 2 or 3 times over these 12 years!!!). The Internet Mercury propeller guide doesn't work for my application. The information I’ve provide on their site is as follow: boat is 2265 lb, people and gear are 850 lb, motor is a 150 PRO XS with a 2.08 gear case, 34 gallons fuel tank and I'll go for general good performance.
What would be good choices for an aluminium propeller for this dream fish and family ride boat. Is a 19” Spitfire Aluminium propeller would be a good choice? Or a Black Max 19”?
    PLEASE HELP!

      Hello
Odds are that the maximum Manufactures recommended RPM on you engine is 4800. If the 17 pitch allows you to reach 4800, Wide Open Throttle, light load, stick with the 17. If you are over 4800, then you can go up to a 19 pitch. A 3 blade stainless will only increase your top speed by maybe 1-2 MPH, however you may loose a small amount of hole shot.
