    Thanks for honoring Dr Mcdougall. I was disappointed that not many were addressing his passing. He helped so many people and deserves the tribute. May he rest in peace and live on in our hearts. He did so much on earth. God must have decided his work here on earth is done and said come on home John. ❤ My condolences to his friends, family and our plant based community, we lost a good one.

      McDougall attacked other plant-based health doctors, so don't expect them to speak about McDougall. Those doctors are being respectful with silence! McDougall wrote his book, "The Starch Solution," promoting depleted white rice-which he copied from Kempner, who used white rice in the 1950s to sustain dying kidney patients. As healthy as white potatoes are, they are also starches. Sweet potatoes are much more nutritious. Even then, throw in several daily servings of greens-raw or steamed-because starch is not known for nutrients. McDougall stated -"as much as 90% starch." He used the word "starch" religiously, not upgrading to "whole grains." And when his diet was referred to as whole food, plant-based," he corrected, reinforcing his approach as "starch-based." McDougall failed to differentiate between removing animal flesh & fluid, bottled oils, and processed carbs as removing harmful food prevents disease with plant food's benefits. Each is its own subject. Folks did not "get healthy" from eating depleted rice & potatoes. The health improvement directly resulted from removing animal flesh, bottled oils, and processed carbs. The food we add back to replace the missing /removed foods highly affects our future well-being, ultimate health, and even longevity. Even then, we shortchange our chances of a healthy, long life without hard work or equivalent exercise.

    I had no idea Dr McDougall lived in Santa Rosa when the Tubbs fire happened. I also live in Santa Rosa and my family also lost their home in 2017. Today it's close to 100 and will be in the high 90s and low 100s for the next 6 days. I've lived here for 50 years and the temperatures continue to get warmer and warmer every year. This is a very heavy animal agriculture area. It saddens me every day to see that nothing has changed here since the fires. No real education as to how to prevent such catastrophes in the future. The majority of citizens here are pro animal agriculture even after experiencing horrific devastating fires and rising temps. Dr. McDougall said it, it feels hopeless because of human inertia. I'm grateful for the strong willed individuals like Dr. McDougall who never gave up. He was a gift and his legacy will continue on. Thank you Rip for replaying this conversation.🙏

    Thank you Rip Esselstyn for posting this beautiful tribute to Dr. John McDougall and your interview with him. He was an amazing man and I am heartbroken over his loss. The one thing that became so evident to me in your interview is Dr. McDougall's comment that information about the health benefits of plant based eating has been around since the 1920's. It has been out there but the mainstream is not listening. I have never been an activist but am thinking it is time to carry on his torch. But how does this information get to the general public? Many changes in society start with laws. Additional enlightenment comes through education. Other ways is through the press- publicity spreads information quickly. Dr. McDougall, Dr.. Caldwell Esselstyn, you and the Esselstyn family, Dr. Dean Ornish, Dr. Michael Greger, Dr. Colin Campbell, PCRM all have been promotinng this way of eating for years. Yet it is still not mainstream. The Surgeon General has an impact on the nation. Cigarette smoking was eventually reduced significantly in this country after the surgeon general brought it to light. The Surgeon General recently declared gun violance as a major health issue in our nation. Certainly it is. However, what about our eating habits as a nation? Other than making the changes for ourselves, what is the best way to spread this information in a positive, normal and impactful way to carry on what Dr. McDougall began?

      McDougall hero was Nathan Pritikin a man with no MD or Ph.D and zero credentials in any health or medical field who wrecked his health. Would you get dental work done by someone with no credentials, no experience and no license in anything related to dentistry? Dr. Bessie Delany age 104, the second African American woman licensed to practice dentistry in New York State would never approve of a starch based diet since she saw first hand for decades what consuming a fad diet would do to wreck your health and teeth.

    Those saying he died too young… remember, he lived decades longer than he was supposed to. It’s a testament to his research into nutrition and longevity.

    Like many, I am filled with sorrow over the premature passing of a giant, perhaps one of the initial 'foragers', to build this _fringe_ community of whole food plant-based folks who have adopted this dietary regimen - our natural human diet based upon our easily recognizable biology. Some know what Dr. John meant when he said: "The fat you eat is the fat you wear". However, of the 10 sayings mentioned here, Rip, that is not fully accurate. There are loads of good fats if eaten moderately such as nuts, seeds, *whole* coconut, and avocado. Blessings for what you, and your family, have done and keep doing.

    • @rabeascholz1390
      @rabeascholz1390 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Dr. McDougall also said that most people can't do moderation, though, and was critical towards eating nuts. I vividly remember him saying there was a reason they came in a hard shell, and that the coconut had the hardest shell of them all.

      @jageo48 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rabeascholz1390 True, John said that; however, in the saying, truth is not found. I shouldn't work white oak and lignum vitae as a woodworker, because they're so hard; I should stick to pine and spruce. HUH!? We're also told by others, that squirrels bury their nuts so as to ferment them. Yeah and some turn into trees. Good science is peer-reviewed, not anecdotal and not stated by experts, the lowest on the gold-standard rung. Didn't we all have 'nuff of that during the past 4 years?! No one person however well-intentioned, is the sole repository of truth. To follow anyone as hero, and I am not saying anything negative about John, as I have followed him for 15 years diligently, is to as Sadghuru states, "To concretize something you likely no little 'bout".

      I wouldn't eat coconut - so much saturated fat and fat in general. Jeff from VegSource has great videos on nuts.

    • @jageo48
      @jageo48 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MartinVran There is a difference between coconut oil, coconut cream and coconut milk VS whole coconut in small amounts, shredded, grated or flour. Yes, it is a saturated fat. There has been no studies I am aware of that definitively state: *stay away.* in any form.

      @@jageo48 Yes, Im aware of the big difference between parts and processing of coconut, but I still agree more with this video with Rip on coconut. th-cam.com/users/livenoRGbM1GnCU?feature=shared Defatted coconut flour might be about OK, but I'm not into processing food, but it looks less bad to me than fat coconut meat(even though other parts of coconut are even lot more fat).

    Dr. John McDougall lost his home, his cat and all of his possessions during the Californian wildfires in 2017 and had an unlucky accident sometime in 2015 where he broke his hip. I don't think he fully recovered from that. His May 2016 Newsletter on his website has details on his accident, while his facebook post from October 12. 2017 documents the loss of his home.
