Actually guys, Resident Evil controls dictate that up is always "go forward". They're consistent that way and that's why they used them with the constantly changing camera angles.

This game never did much for me as much as I wanted to like it. Now Evil Dead Regeneration and Fistful of Boomstick are vastly superior and shit all over this one. On a side note the skull with batwings always made me think of the Overkill album covers :D

I don't really understand how so many people complained about Resident Evil's tank controls. I didn't have any trouble with them at all!
+BlackearacheXD Most likely because there are two kinds of people who talk about the old Resident Evil control scheme. The ones that played the original (in which the Playstation 1 at the time, didn't have analogue sticks, thus used the directional pad for movement) and the ones who played the Director's Cut (which added Rumble and Analogue). The latter are generally the ones who complain, and for good reason. Analogue with Resident Evil's controls was pretty shitty, but the D-Pad always came naturally to me.
***** Yeah, that's true. Honestly, while Resident Evil 4 was fun, looking back at it, it lost a bit of what made it Resident Evil. You were often put into situations where your goal and only way of advancing is to just kill everything in a given area rather than working around it and fleeing. (This is excluding boss fights.)
What made Resident Evil's older titles scary was that you were often either incapable or ill equipped to deal with immediate problems that presented themselves; the sounds of a hunter around the corner, or when those dogs jumped through the window before you found any extra clips. Stuff like that, where you had to decide whether it was better to fight or conserve and approach the problem again later, it made you feel powerless. Not knowing how many enemies are around the corner you need to advance through, not knowing if you even have the resources to take them down or if it was possible to get around them, it made you feel helpless to the point it was fiendish. I'm glad with the Resident Evil Remaster, upcoming Zero Remaster and Resi 2 Remake that things are reverting to that style of survival horror.

The tank controls of Resident Evil are awesome. I consider them a necessity for that genre. I feel it adds to the horror atmosphere.

The C64 version: abysmal. Hail To The King: awful controls in an otherwise cool game. Fistful Of Boomstick: much better. Regeneration: AWESOME.

I had this on Playstation back in the day. I thought it was the shit and felt like the next best thing to a new movie so I was heavily invested in beating it which took me a while but was worth it. Not sure how it holds up today. James and Doug covered about 0.01% of the game here.

Play Evil Dead:Fist full of BOOMstick or Evil Dead Regeneration. They got it right with those. Regeneration was perfect. You even get a half dead midget named Sam as a side-kick that you literally kick around.
I played this game through a few years back and loved it, I leant it to a mate who was literally like fuck this old ass broken game.
The xbox evil dead game (regeneration) was nice!

Ryan Hoffman I have, and I really liked it. I haven't played any other survival horror games except dino crisis though. Probably because I was a kid when RE and SH came out.
David Vanderhoeven You should try RE 1-Code Veronica and Silent Hill 1-4. The creator of RE directed The Evil Within and the same guy designed the creatures for it and SH. Great games but they play quite a bit different than TEW.
It always baffles me when people tell me they struggle with alone in the dark/resident evil controls.

Guess 3d and 2d skills are very different after all. Another thing that I find strange btw : when people say "yeah you're heading in that direction and then the camera changes and you're in another direction". That is simply not true. If you were heading towards a door in one angle, even if the camera angle changes, you'll still be heading towards the door ! It's just weird to me.

After u finish the cabin you activate a portal and go back in time like in The army of darkness and you get to fight Evil Ash again. Tons of fun.

3:48 Resident Evil's tank controls were designed specifically to avoid the problem of traveling in the wrong direction when the camera angle changed, because you would always be moving in the direction that the character was facing. I prefer the tank controls.
Times like this where I'm happy I love tank controls. I've tried playing Silent Hill 2 and 3 without it and I had such a hard time with it

Even though Boomstick and Regeneration were better, they were just action games. I feel like a good Survival Horror game based on the Evil Dead would be awesome if done well. I hope somebody attempts to make another Resident Evil style Evil Dead game some day.
Nah dude. They were way too arcade oriented. Survival horror with fixed camera anglesand unique puzzles. No one has the patience to adjust to an older games controls is the biggest problem.

I love how as soon as the game starts it just SCREAMS Dreamcast. I don’t know how to explain it but Dreamcast had a way of making games FEEL like Dreamcast games.

+Roger Sherman - I played it on a PS1 back in a day and didn't had issues as these two have in the video. Couple of my friends had this game and they finished it with no complains. Either the dreamcast controller sucks donkey dicks or they are not use to it or some other shit. I guess playing too much shitty games dumb them down so now they can't play anything else anymore.
This game is an underated masterpiece.
I remember back when it came out, EVERYONE hated it.
But once you get the complex controls down, you are playing through Evil Dead 4. And man is it glorious!

Man I used to love my Dreamcast... One of the funnest gaming experiences of my life was playing Phantasy Star Online for hours and hours and hours. I remember spending so much time leveling up my guys then eventually you meet the right people online and they hook you up with alllll kinds of crazy ass duped/hacked/glitched gear that made you a powerhouse.I REALLY wish they would remake that game for PS$ or something and make it as good as it was back then.

I hate games that used this type of controls, they suck, specially when they're heavy combat focused like this one, hated it when Resident Evil did it, still hate it now, tho at least Resident Evil's focus was more on the puzzles than fighting the enemies.
+Karl Schweinfurth It kind of made sense back in the day because the PS1 didn't originally have an analog stick, and the focus on survival horror rather than action. But yeah, I definitely don't miss tank controls. They were even worse in more action oriented games like Duke Nukem A Time to Kill.
+EnigmaHood seriously though even today I prefer tank controls for Resident Evil. I think it works well with a FIXED CAMERA. but yeah you're so right about Duke Nukem time to kill/Land of the Babes, tank controls definitely didn't work there.

+Karl Schweinfurth The original Resident Evil, when released, utilized that control scheme because analogue sticks weren't actually being fielded yet. As such, they had to make do with what they had. As time went on, they began adapting it to smoother gameplay, though the general idea became very novel and they kept it anyway. I don't mind tank controls in a game that utilizes it well, like Resident Evil.
