I was told official Rolex dealers have to change it for free. That was part of the sales pitch of these watches as the mechanical movement don’t need batteries they used the “free battery changes for life” as a service premium when you purchase it.

That's correct, I was shocked to find out when I called myself.

May I ask why the seconds hand on this oysterquartz was not ticking, but sweeped like a mechanical watch ?

19019 and 19018 are absolutely great watches! 17000s are also excellent examples of industrial design and they represent a critical period for the watch industry. Classic watches guaranteed. I wish they were still priced like 10 years ago

I sent mine to AD and they are asking over then 3500USD just to fix it 😅
I’m thinking not to fix it anymore and just put it aside

I have a pre COSC dial Oysterquartz 17000 and the motor broke a couple years ago. I had it sent to Switserland, where they actually had to replicate a number of parts (!). Cost me 1200 euros and it was 6 months out for repair. Yes, that hurt. But on the flip side I have one of the rarest (with the pre-COSC dial), prettiest (IMHO) and most precise Rolex ever made. I will never sell it....

Incredible very rare watch. It’s amazing that Rolex had the parts to replace that. Wear it in good health.

You take it to Rolex & they change it for free. Got my done earlier this year.

Nice, may I ask did they do a service for you or change the battery? Typically Rolex won’t do anything for free but sometimes a nice AD will change out the battery for you.

I bought mine from an authorized dealer in Leicester about 15 years ago. Box and papers, full history. 17000 with a white face. Price then, £2200. I don't know what it's worth now. Hopefully, a bit more. What I do like to do do is take it into a Rolex dealer such as Harrods or Watches of Switzerland and watch all the 12 year old SA's get a nose bleed 'cos they have never been told in their joining videos that Rolex made a Quartz movement! Perfect. Oh and yes, they replace the batteries for free!

Whatever you do. Never let the battery run down. I will cause problems with the motor and other issues. I actually love the watch and the design.

How important is it to get the battery change done by an official Rolex service center? Wouldn't a reliable local watch maker be able to do a good job as long as you don't care about the pressure testing? Price difference is huge last time I checked with the official service center

The only reason you have to get it done by a Rolex certified professional is for warranty. You can get it fixed somewhere else but it voids your warranty.

@@davidgrantphelps1944 What warranty is there still in 2024? My grandfather must have bought the watch like 40+ years ago.

Baught a 17014 black dial for a astunnishing sum of 4000usd. Sold it doe 5000usd. And baught a 16613, but really, i think it was a mistake. I think my next watch will be a full gold oyaterquartz with a tree dial.

I just change the battery myself
