Stingless Bee Hive Inspection and Shifting Colony To a New Bee Box

  • We decided to inspect 2 of our hives after a really long time to see what was going on inside and may be split the hives if we found queen cells .
    We could not split the hives as we didn't find a queen cell in the green wooden hive , however we shifted the colony to a new box as we had found fungus in the honey chamber during the monsoons .
    The queen looked young too , like she had recently emerged from a queen cell. It was a delight to see ample pollen collection in the hive .
    The 2nd hive was beautiful too , with honey being stored in the honey super , however the bees had shut the brood chamber so tightly , I was worried the glass partition would break into piecs inside the brood chamber , hence shut the hive back , will revisit this hive in consultation with Binu Pt from Madhusree Honey.

    I really appreciate that you are putting a lot of effort for maintaining some bee hives in your balcony garden especially in a city like Mumbai. I have watched the entire video so I have some suggestions in maintaining the hives more healthy. My suggestion is that in any case, it is not advisable to change the existing box in which they are sitting. They worked hard for two years to build their home like this and now everything is gone. They have to start from 1. Giving back the pollen, honey and some propels may not be sufficient for their better living. They have to seal each and every point of box, maintain temperature, make fresh legs to support eggs, construct a safe entrance and tunnel leading to hive etc. The fungus like something you have mentioned in the hive is not a harmful thing. This happens when the size of the hive is more than the bees can maintain. That’s why they have excluded half portion of the hive. Wish you all the best. Have wonderful days ahead.

      Thank you so much for taking the time to see and comment on my video .
      You have made absolutely valid points and will keep them in mind for the future .
      I have lost 2 hives to fungus already and hence I wanted to shift this one , luckily the bees are well settled in new hive and they sealed up everything with 48 hours !!

    After shifting the colony don't put old colony near to the new colony . They how more attract to the old colony. Gave some propolish to the new box so they can work easily and maintain the temperature by closing the gap.

      Yes , thank you for the suggestion .
      I checked the box the very next day , amazing little bees had sealed off the entire box in 24 short hours !!

    Is the fungus problem expected in Mumbai/Navi Mumbai areas? Wanted to know your opinion.

    • @mumbaibalconygardenerhobbies
      @mumbaibalconygardenerhobbies  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not generalise it like that .
      From what I have gathered a weak hive is prone to all possible problems . Now if there isn't enough pollen and nectar source within the travelling range of this bee , this would lead to a weak hive and then in turn other problems .
      In my case the above reason holds true . Also the hives even when protected from direct rain are in the path of the south westerly monsoon breeze , enough moisture present to cause the problem .
      The bees do fine in Kerala , I suppose this is because of ample food sources year round with strong bee colonies.

      @@mumbaibalconygardenerhobbies then it must be jungle wood.. buy a good quality teak wood from a near by saw mill and get a similar box done by a carpenter.. for stingless bees i would recommend Australian bee hive.. they are the best.. i made one for my bees recently.. i can share some pics and dimensions if you want

    Hello Maam, Quite impressed with your work. I need some propolis, if you can spare some for me. Kindly let me know. I stay in Badlapur and can collect it from you.

    • @mumbaibalconygardenerhobbies
      @mumbaibalconygardenerhobbies  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First thank you !
      Propolis is available only after honey is harvested , I have not harvested any honey from the hives as there isnt abundance of pollen and nectar in my area for the bees through the year , so they use up what they store . I too need propolis , no spares at my end .
      Bee keepers also will not share at this time , honey harvest season from stingless bees in Kerala is from February through April , you can connect with madhusreehoneyfarm.com ( please recheck website ) and place your order with them when available .
