    My M6 II is arriving today.
    My idea is to setup my M50 to the video studio and the M6 II for my photography and "on the street" video.
    Lets see how this goes.
    Thank you for the video comparison and wish you well

    I love my M50, but after seeing so many videos recently on the M6, I have been blown away at how beautiful the 4K footage is; it takes my breath away; not to mention some awesome pics. You just can't beat the Canon colors! Even if it's upscaled a bit, and may be a bit softer than other brand 4K cameras, I just love how cinematic it looks! I'm still awestruck by one YTer's 4K 120fps footage of a moving train in the rain. I could have died and gone to heaven, it blew me away!! I do agree and appreciate what you said about the lens limitations in taking full advantage of the M6 sensor.

    I think the overall comparison you did was very good. However I'm quite surprised at your comments regarding the M6 Mark 2 not having an advantage (with cheaper lenses) for photography. You could not be more wrong! I'll preface my following comments by saying I use cheap lenses (15-45mm kit lens, 22mm f/2, EF-s 55-250mm STM for birds in flight, 50mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8, 10-18mm and a few other similarly budget priced lenses).
    I have owned the M50 for over a year and I bought the M6 Mark 2 a few weeks ago and it is chalk and cheese. There's a massive advantage to the newer camera for photography. Its almost twice the price of the M50 in Australia, but it feels like twice the camera in the field.
    I always test new cameras, initially, by shooting birds in flight. The M6 Mk II has far better AF which seems to know what the subject is without guidance. It just jumps to the bird and locks on and OMG you can take a 20 shot burst with EVERY shot in focus. There is noticeably more detail in the wings and fine hair on the head and body. I could never just leave the M50 in tracking mode with all AF points active as it might focus on a tree or other background object. The M6 Mk II usually just grabs the bird and tracks.
    What's even more noticeable is the high ISO performance. There's slightly less noise at full resolution than there is on the M50, but by ISO 6400 on the M6 Mark 2, it has similar noise as the M50 at ISO 3200. However, forget the noise, the detail is so much better at higher ISOs, its crazy. Plus, you can downsize the image to 24MP and have significantly less noise with far greater detail than the M50 at the same image size. Shooting birds in trees (in a low light forest-like environment) at ISO 2000 is nothing for the M6 Mark 2. I would avoid that like the plague on my M50, M5 and 80D as the detail gets too mushy.
    There is a small step up in dynamic range at ISO 100, but it pulls away as you climb up the ISOs. So if you have to raise shadows at higher isos then there's an even bigger noise difference than the basic high ISO noise difference itself.
    The face detection works from a huge distance on the M6 Mark 2 and eye AF, although needs to be closer, works in continuous shooting with servo AF.
    The physical controls are vastly superior with more dials (one being multi-functional) and more customisable buttons. "From a photography point of view" the M6 Mark 2 is light years ahead of the M50.
    So better AF, usable eye detection, better dynamic range, better ISO performance, better handling, twice the burst rate, more customisation, better image quality... the M6 Mark 2 is a vastly superior camera for photography, even with cheap lenses.
    P.s. If you only view images to fit on the screen, you'll be lucky to see differences in detail between any 2 cameras. Zoom in to 100% if you want to compare and yes, you will see the M6 Mark 2 is superior.

      Some great info there, particularly in regards to the functionality of the M6 Mark II in photography. I shot basic landscape and static subjects with that two cameras, both with the 15-45 and the 22mm and I could not see any difference in detail, and that’s zooming in on both in light room. I really wanted to see a difference, I just couldn’t see one, but that doesn’t take into account the functional advantages of the M6, which you have described well.
      Thanks for sharing all that, I I’ll try to make use of this information in a future video.

    Nice job! I'm still using both about the same amount. Every once in a while I switch back to the 4k video in the M50 because I need to take advantage of the crop factor that gives me the extra reach when shooting wildlife and I can't get close enough to get the shot. I just switch over to manual focus peaking. Looking forward to your next video. I have 2 videos left to shoot and I'll be done with my series. Keep up the good work.

    Fantastic points of view, and very thorough and useful comparison. Kudos for putting this out. The M6 Mark ii does have a resolution advantage, and a really good sensor, but the resolution in the M50 is more than enough. The whole shortcoming for both of these cameras is the mount, and the limited native lens choices. As you said in your review, the M6 could/ should benefit from better lenses. Higher pixel count sensors really need good lenses. I’m not so opposed to the clip on viewfinder, as I had one on an Olympus Pen years ago. My take away is Canon should have offered more resolution in the clip on viewfinder. After all, this is the second one they made. Same for the real LCD. I believe your summary is about right on the ‘Mark,’ pun intended. 🙄😀☺️ Liked and Subscribed ! 👏🏻👍👍👍😁✌🏻🇺🇸📷

    Thanks for a great video! I replaced my Sony A6000 with an M50, as I could get a great cheap very lightly used bundle with EF-S adapter and a Tamron 18-400mm lens. I use it as all-rounder for travels (landscape, portrait and wildlife, hence the longer reach to get to these smaller birds or big lizards on tall trees here in Australia). I'm feeling limited by the controls. I've remapped all the buttons, but am still missing one more dial. I'm completely baffled by Canon's strategy with screen (flip up/articulated), controls (expxosure dial on M3, 2 multifunctional dials on M6 MKII). And finally their product strategy with launching an m50 MKII with mere software updates and M6 MKII with a new sensor and a complete overhaul would have been perfect... without that's I see there will be no point of upgrading to M6 MKII, but rather stick to the original plan of maybe getting a 7D MKII with a Sigma 150-600 mm as a second body for birding at some point...

    both cameras are great, it's just personal preferences for each user. for me thou, the reasons for the m50 are one, the ev is in there just like any pro dslr but in a smaller form, two, the price for the m50 is cheaper but you get value with the feature that are included while the m6 if you want to have an ev in there you have to buy as an extra option. there are a lot of better features that i wish is included like a better 4k video but i can live with that. a satisfied user of the m50

    Really fantastic video. I am having major buyers remose regarding the M50ii , Im wondering if I should have gone with the M6ii. I take a lot of macro shots with L glass, mostly of reptiles like rattlesnakes. I also love cropping photos in so they become abstract photography. The crispness of the the M6ii sensor is highly attractive, but the lack of built in EVF is very unattractive. I have a remote trigger on my hotshoe, and I dont think the M6 shoe can be split so that I can run both an EVF and a flash trigger. If it could, i would buy the m6ii. I dont understand why canon released the m50ii a year after the m6ii with a severely handicapped sensor. I really really want the M6ii's sensor, and in-camera-charging, but i am fairly certain I will come to miss the viewfinder when I am choosing to run my flash trigger in an outdoor daylight shoot of animals. But man, man oh man its like you were talking directly to me about the issue. Very good delivery on your video!!

    I have an M50 stuck on the end of a sigma 150-600. I actually prefer it to the G9 with 100-400 which was more than double the price. Now the M50 is having issues. The menu button won't work. It is auto focusing without holding the shutter and will not stop. It won't connect to pc to copy the photos.
    For wildlife photography I should go for the mark ii. I love a flip up screen and using my right thumb to track on the screen instead of having to take my hand off the shutter completely when the screen is out to the left. I'm just wondering if the detachable EVF has more lag than the M50.

    Hi! Pro photographer here, my workhorses are R6 and R6mkII; I have an m50 as my EDC camera which is solely used for casual photos. It’s paired to a 22f2 and an adapted ef 50 1.8 (and all my other EF-L lenses if I need other focal lengths). The M50 feels adequate for what I use it for, yet I don’t really like the EVF (too contrasty and saturated than the monitor, and much much lower quality than my R6s), and the lack of controls: I’m accustomed to the three dials and back-button focus on the R6s, and I like the idea of having the same controls on the M6II. Is the EVF-DC2 any better than the m50 evf? Especially in terms of color and contrast: can I customize anything on it?
    Can I set the back button focus to eye-tracking AF as I do on my R6s?
    I can definitely live with the m50 as is, but I could also sell it and get a complete m6mkII kit, used, just by adding a couple hundreds to what I could get by selling the m50, which would be almost double what I had paid for it a few months back (I got lucky on eBay, hehe).
    Thanks for your insights!

    What about difference in night photography? Is there a significant difference?

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a little bit of a complicated one to answer. I would say the low light performance is equal to or a little bit better than the M50, but it achieves this through digital image processing. There are 3 levels of low light imagine processing in the M6 Mark II, and you can select the one that works best for you in a given situation. If you use both the M50 and the M6 Mark II with none of High ISO noise reduction, then then M50 might actually be a little bit better. When is comes to video though, the M6 Mark II has significantly better high iso/low light perforce.

      The M6 shares a lot with the M6 II, in regards to ergonomics, build, and button layout. It doesn’t have 4K, or the 32mp sensor, and a number of the features it does have will be slightly improved in the M6 II. There is nothing wrong with the M6, it’s still a great camera.

      Yes, you will be able to achieve a very similar look. In fact, the most important part of both video and photography is the lighting, not the camera. Most people that are unhappy with their video results end up buying new cameras, when the should be setting up better lighting.

    Great video. Not owning either (but do have the 77d) I’m being swayed by the M6 mkii and your video has helped do that. In the Uk at the moment there is a difference around £280 between the M50 and M6 mkii, both with kit lens and EOS EF M adapter (and DC2 EVF for M6) I think at that price difference the obvious choice is to go for the newer tech, I’m not particularly needing 4K but it would be a welcome bonus.

    One of the things heavily steering me toward the M6ii over the a6400 is the fact that the vlog lens is twice the cost with Sony... $900 just for that lens?!?! Insane. Then again, the kit with viewfinder is $100 more on Canon.
    This also is the class of camera where I’d want to “set it and forget it” by shooting and uploading, no intense grading or hassles with tweaking colors. Also the 10-bit external (I think?) over HDMI is amazing in a camera of this caliber.
    The only downside is the lack of flexibility if you do want to preserve highlights and grade... no Log. I worry about it looking very video-y with blown out highlights everywhere.
    I’d imagine with the a6400 I could protect that much better if I was willing to spend the time processing the HLG or Log. But also the Log footage requires a higher base ISO, so more noise. And also many say 8-bit isn’t enough to handle S-Log anyway.

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Couple thoughts, if you by the m6 kit you can sell the view finder on eBay and get $150+ for it. When it comes to the LOG thing, keep in mind that log is not raw, so it’s just how the camera saves the data, the amount of data is the same. With the cannon you can install, and even make, custom picture profiles, so you can get that same effect. Check out ciniestyle, should do what you want.

    Good Morning. I follow your channel across the ocean in Portugal, and I have to thank you for your excellent work.
    I have the M50 and am generally happy with the camera. It was my first camera. This particular article feels like it was made for me 🤣
    I use silent mode a lot to take pictures, especially in the church in my hometown, but I have a lot of problems with the "banding" (I think that's what it's called), I know it has to do with the quality and type of lighting in the place , but clearly I can't change that. As the M50's silent mode doesn't allow settings, and that doesn't happen on the M6 Mkii, my question is;
    With the M6 MKii settings, in silent mode, will I be able to eliminate the "banding", reduce it or will it stay the same?
    I don't know if the m6 has a greater ability to read and reset the sensor and thus reduce the "banding" or even get rid of it.
    you would recommend switching (the probability is to stay the same with the M50) for the M6 mk ii, to solve this "problem".

    Also, I implore you to support the Commlite adapter instead of the Viltrox one. Same price, it's made of metal instead of hard plastic. @zacredacted2137 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m glad you are ok! Hmmm. Well the M6 II and X-T3 are hard to compare lol. The M6 II fits what need right now better than the x-t3 (I sold it). While the xt3 is the better camera, I couldn’t afford the lenses and there were some video issues that I couldn’t work around. The main one being if you ever allowed the camera to control exposure, then there were very noticeable steps/jumps that were distracting. The canon is much better at auto exposure and the lenses are far more affordable. It isn’t necessarily the camera I want, but it is the best that I can afford right now.
      What I want is a Panasonic with phase detect AF, if that existed I’d be all over it.

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zac Redacted, was the xt-3 4K noticeably sharper? And does the xt-3 have touch and track autofocus like the canon? I had the impression that it did not.
      Speaking of lenses, grab the 22mm f2 if you haven’t already, cheap new and even cheaper used on eBay. It’s actually a great video lens, especially when used with the first level of IS. I’m also a big fan of the ef-m 18-55, which can be had for around $100 on eBay. I buy most of my lenses used, and they seem to hold their value, you can sell them years later for the price you paid, and sometimes more.

    • @zacredacted2137
      @zacredacted2137 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The xt3 is sharper...on TH-cam it would be not too easy to see. The xt3 can record in 4k60 4k30 10bit and you can crank the mbps up to 400 if you want. All of that does lend to a better looking picture, but for me it was overkill. And all of it didn’t matter if the camera couldn’t autoexpose correctly. I just make videos of my kid for his grandparents. I don’t need 4K 10bit 4.2.0. But if you need it then it has it.
      The fuji has good autofocus but not great. It isn’t as good as Canon’s. It has touch to focus, but as far I can remember it doesn’t have tracking like Canon or Sony.
      I got the 22mm and the quality of the picture is great. I’m a little concerned about the AF motor in the lens. It has a hard time keeping up with my kid even when I stop it down. But like I said the quality is great and the size is amazing so I’m a little unsure where I stand on it.

    When you say that the EF-M zoom lenses are not enough to reach the full potential of the 32-megapixel sensor, what is the decisive factor in a lens? What properties a lens needs to have in order to be able to fully "use" the 32 megapixels? For example, I have Tamron 150-600 G2 that I use with M50 + adapter, and I wonder if the images could be substantially better from M6ii.

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm really talking about resolving power or resolution. You need a lens with enough resolving power to be able to see the difference in resolution going from 24 to 32mp. You still get other features with the M6, better AF, faster frame rate, 4k video, intervalometer, better low light, etc. I don't know that specific lens well enough to say if you would be able to see any difference in resolution.

      If I had to choose between digital IS with this quality and IBIS: Digital IS all day long! Why? Because on wider angle lenses you get this awful corner wobble, and there is currently no way of preventing this - except again digital IS. The M6 II is great for what it is.

    Hey Mark! Having trouble finding out if the Tamron 18-400 can resolve the M6 Mk II's sensor quality. Have you heard anything?

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have any experience with it, but if others are saying it's a good sharp lens then I would just go with it. Most lenses will not resolve this level of detail at the edges, but if your subject is many in the centre of frame, like people at concerts and events, this is not so much of a concern.

    Mark I was considering stepping up to the Canon M50 from my current M3? I know the stats are very similar with the M50
    having a newer image processor? I am primary a photo guy do you think that and the dual pixel focus would make it worth it
    over lets say buying some new glass like the 32mm or maybe the 55-250mm stm lens? I am currently using solely the 22mm f2 lens
    what do you think?

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have used the M3, side by side the M50. Main thing you will notice is autofocus speed, you wont see any improvement in image quality. Unless the autofocus speed is really bothering you, then I would buy a new lens, a new lens will transform your images in a way that just changing camera bodies will not.

      The Photos wont look very different. The RP will give more blurry background, the M6 will give much faster autofocus.

    Hi bud, My wife is currently in the market for a camera to start making YT vlogs/videos. She likes the idea of the articulated screen in the M50 but from your review I would personally lean to the M6. My question is this, Can you use the HDMI out to have a live view via laptop or monitor so she can see the shot as she is making her vlogs?
    Liked and subbed 👍

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you can can use HDMI out on both cameras like that. I think for her choice, it really is about wanting 4K or not, if she doesn’t feel she needs 4K, then I would just go for the m50, at least for YT videos. I like the 4K option for family and home videos, as it will age better at time goes on.

      @@markwiemels i think we will definately go with the M50. What lens would you recommend for all round use? We will be doing indoor vlogs in a new studio we have setup and outdoor filming possibly on the move with our daughter. I was going to go body only but if the kit lens would be good enough for our needs then i would purchase it instead. Thanks so much for your help by the way!

    As someone that wants to delve deeper into photography and upgrading from a compact camera/phone camera, would you suggest the M50 or M6 Mark ii ? @ 15:36 when you mention buying the kit and just using the kit (no additional lenses) you kind kind of threw me off, that was definitely not my intention.

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I didn’t phrase that very well. With the M6 mark II you must buy more expensive lenses, or adapt lenses to get more out of it than the m50. Because the standard lenses don’t resolve the 32mp, so you can’t tell the difference between the 32mp photo and the 24np photo. You certainly can adapt and upgrade lenses on the m50, and this will give you different looks and abilities. If you’re really more into the photos, and the video is not very important, I think you would be very happy with the M50.

    • @markwiemels

    I use the m10 and gave used the m50 but hated the fully articulated screen on the m50. I like the flip up screen as when I would do a selfy shot the screen to the side is just odd you wsnt to look into the lens but you look att the screen instead so it does not work. The flip up screen works bettet for a selfy.

    Extremely useful video although I am still undecided as I'm looking to change lens. I am thinking of up-grading from a Canon D77 to one of these cameras. I struggle with arthritis in my hands so need something that I can grip well and is small and light to carry around.
