- Laowa Nanomorph Anamorphic Zoom Lenses
1.5x anamorphic, 28-55mm, 50-100mm, T2.9, silver flare.
Shot on an arri alexa mini in open gate.
All footage was standard rec709, no color grading whatsoever. For some clips, only where mentioned in the video, I used the lens correction tool in davinci resolve to add more barrel distortion. I find this very useful to completing the look of some anamorphic lenses that exhibit pincushion distortion. Most zoom lenses, spherical and anamorphic zoom lenses will have slightly different distortion along the zoom range. This is something that I like to fix in post, sometimes in after effects, sometimes in resolve. I also hear fusion has a nice tool to do this as well.

FINALLY. Someone put a 1.5X Ana on the Mini and recorded in OG. No one is talking about how this is one of the only combos that will get you a final image that uses the FULL sensor.
😇😇
Uhm…I might question your googling skills 🫣
These camera tests are so so useful man. No fluff, just straight gems. Thank you.
Thank you! I have a lot more lenses I want to do this type of video with.
Barrel distortion for the win!
Oh you know it!
Crazy distortion difference at 50mm. Both look great, just didn't expect such a big difference. Great video as always.
Hey thanks! And yeah typically you will see more pincushion on the longer end of zoom lenses. Even on spherical.
my man uploading informative video with no fluff or dust 🔥🔥
😇
My favourite man is back 🤍
hello hello!
Love your content, man. Keep it going! I am a super fan.
hey thank you so much! more to come 😎
Here for the crispy ending!
Glad you stuck around for it 😂
love those lenses
They are great. Nice size too!
Thank you

nice concise test footage!
Ty 😎
I got order number 1 or 2 for these lenses. They're great, pretty much the only thing that I find objectionable is the easily corrected pincushion distortion but otherwise they're very clean, something you often don't get on budget anamorphics. I do wish the squeeze factor was higher though, it's often a challenge to notice the oval bokeh with these lenses.
That’s cool you got the first 1 or 2! What do you find difficult about correcting pincushion? When the shot is not zooming it’s quite quick in resolve or after effects.
@@BlaineWestropp1Oh I meant to say that pincushion distortion is easily corrected, but it's the only characteristic that I dont like/find objectionable with the lens. Totally agree it's an easy fix in post; distortion is probably one of the lens issues that is most cleanly fixed in post. Though with zoom lenses that don't send focal length metadata to the camera, you're kinda forced to correct it by eye and can't really correct that programmatically.
Ah yes. Agreed!
I like the way you roll
thank u ghost!
interested to see what ya cook up with these!
Next I gotta turn them sideways!
I don't own the zooms but own the PL/EF blue set. I've designed vertical anamorphic style for some of my commercial clients utilizing the BMPCC6K Pro and the Nanomorphs. Love the glass but customer service needs improvement. Great video Blaine!
Hey thanks! Are you mounting the lenses vertically on the camera? Rotating camera sideways and keeping lens same? Also, are you in need of service? Are you having an issue?
@@BlaineWestropp1 keeping lens the same and rotating the camera. Then add the sauce in post. I’ve reached out to customer support numerous times about how I couldn’t get the 27MM sharp at all and how many times I was asked about shimming drove me insane. I’m a videographer at NASA and eventually took it to one of our engineers and we got it done internally.
Cool! For the focus, did the engineer shim it? Did they do anything beyond shimming? Cool that you work at NASA!
@@BlaineWestropp1we added a lot more shims then provided and tightened a loose element now it’s fine.
Ah man I’m sorry they couldn’t help ya out with that :/ but glad you got it working
I have that same canon camera with FD 50mm f1.8. Noice shots!
Love that camera. I have a bunch of rolls of film I need to get developed. Can’t wait.
@@BlaineWestropp1 Don't hate, but I haven't used it cause I don't know how. Haha, I did take the lens off and use it on my Sony with a convert mount. I do like the look of the FD.
@pglazzari1 oooo you gotta use it. I can make a little video and show ya.
@@BlaineWestropp1 I know got to shoot film. I love love love the look of film in movies. I enjoyed your video on film. What film stock would you recommend for best look?
@@BlaineWestropp1 I have AE-1 with 50mm f1.8 forays FD-E
Can I ask; the Mini LF with the super 35 setting, is that basically the Alexa Mini again?
yeah mini LF is 2 Alexa mini sensors. same pixel pitch (pixel size), etc.
So the distortion on these are reverse from all other anamorphics?
Not reverse from all others. Cooke anamorphics have pincushion distortion. Some of the newer anamorphic lenses have pincushion distortion. Some of the old classics (outside of Cooke) have barrel distortion. I prefer barrel but if I ever shoot on lenses with pincushion, including spherical, I’ll bend it to barrel in post!
Whohooooo
😎
How are you changing the distortion?
In the edit page of davinci resolve you can scroll down to the lens distortion section in the effects on the right side. Let me know if you can’t find it!
@@BlaineWestropp1 got it, thanks!

what monitor are you using?
Smallhd cine7 on camera, and a smallhd focus7 in my hands. Both have teradeks built in. An amazing combo and I bring them everywhere even when not shooting on my camera.
Where is the lf? :)
Sittin in a pelican waiting for the mercury lenses to arrive on Monday :)
@@BlaineWestropp1 only good news man 🫶🤓
