Yea, someone who was an older person that'd been around the band Slade when they were forming said that they should find some other singer than Noddy Holder because all he could do was scream and make a bunch of noise and they'd be better off with someone else.
Slade went on to sell more singles in less time in England than The Beatles did and probably influenced more bands than any other Rock group ever, Ozzy Osborne himself said Noddy Holder probably has the greatest voice ever in the history of Rock.
Scream and make a bunch noise indeed, he sure did, all the way into the record books.

Led Zeppelin helped make me a rock star with my group of friends for a couple of weeks. I heard LZ 1 on KMET in L.A., hustled down to the local record store to buy it, and gathered all my homies together for a memorable listen. Who really cares if their records never hit #1 - it doesn't change how we feel about them. In relation to that, there should've been separate categories - rock 'n roll, soul, mellow rock, etc.

Back then, the Billboard weekly chart rankings were based on a combination of record sales and radio airplay. One theory for a lower charting peak position can be why would one purchase the single if they like the whole album. Another theory is that some singles are chopped up edited versions of the album cut to make it radio friendly and perhaps the record buyer would prefer the full-length version. As Billy Joel once said about his song "Piano Man", "It was a beautiful song, but it ran too long, if you're gonna have a hit, you gotta make it fit, so they [Columbia Records] cut it down to 3:05."

I'm incredibly disappointed that my cable channels didn't put The Breakfast Club on this weekend. Every once in a while they slip stuff like that in, they put Lost Boys and License to Drive on a couple weeks ago and I realized on my own that it was the anniversary of the day Corey Haim died. One night they put on Midnight Express, I was doing some research on it and realized it was the anniversary of the day Billy Hayes was arrested. They aired it again a few days later on what was the anniversary of his escape. None of this was explicitly mentioned, it was just done. It reminds me of the day a local radio station played Sister Christian and Jessie's Girl back to back with zero mention of Boogie Nights, they just did it.

That shows the power of this over everythung else.

I bet some others have touched on this already, but the main reason Zeppelin never performed quite as well as one might expect on the singles charts is because their singles were always released weeks, months, or even years after that song had already been featured on an album. In this instance, while Zeppelin IV was released in early November of 71, Rock and Roll wasn’t released as a single until February of 72. Everybody had heard the song by the time the single came out. Otherwise, tremendous video as always brotha🤘

Led Zeppelin III is one of their best albums and a necessary change of course. Experimentation was a big thing then.
By the time "Rock and Roll" had hit, its success or lack of may have become irrelevant, since "Stairway to Heaven" had become a juggernaut overwhelming everything in its way.
Robert Plant's favorite album was "Forever Changes" by Love, and seemed to influence a lot of his writing.

The thing about the fourth album and Rock and Roll, is that what could easily be a standard rock tune in the hands of other artists, the track takes on a sort of sonic mysticism, as do all of the other tracks on the fourth album. The mystique of the band hangs heavy over every single track on it, and it’s shrouded in an almost unearthly aura that makes it difficult to describe and pin down.

He went to Vietnam in '66 and came back to a different world. The simple blues based rock and roll was gone. Since Zeppelin was a blues band and Paige loves guys like Link Wray, this song was sort of a love letter to an era that had vanished. It is the same as Lucas making American Graffiti in 72. That way of life was gone and not coming back.

You are absolutely right about the radio back then. While there were exceptions you would pretty much only hear LZ on FM radio whereas the charts were most from AM so FM bands just did not get the same exposure. There were many artists that you just would not hear much, if at all, on AM radio. FM would sometimes play whole sides of albums. Something that just would not happen on AM. Have a look at the Billboard Top 100 for 1969 for example and look at the all the super songs and look at the number 1 song "Sugar, Sugar". I mean really? It would be interesting to see you do a show on how radio worked back then. Nice episode. I had bought Whole Lotta Love on 45 when it was charting I think for 90 cents and later bought LZ II, III and IV and others.

I wasn’t around back then but I see why FM was more popular! Because from what I’ve been told AM only played flavorless Top 40 bounce most of the time.

It’s a shame when I see many people claiming they’ve heard this song all they need to, and don’t need to hear it anymore. This song will always get the hairs on the back of my neck to stand up, as soon as I hear the drum opening.

Love the way it all comes together. A rare moment for even the best groups. Not possible in today's world.

A lot to be said for Robert Plant's influence (or influenced by) the 70s English electric folk scene. Rockers like him and Ian Anderson weren't shy about letting some of that show through on their albums. They weren't going soft on Zepellin 3, folk music was going hard and heavy ! And rock and roll was the folk sound of the day, it was the music that most folks were listening to. But I'm a long time Steeleye Span fan so I suppose I would say something like that. Rock on Professor 🙂

They were redefining the genre and moving it away from slow, torch-like songs like in the early 60s.

Steeleye Span didn't get a lot of airplay where I lived, luckily Fairport Convention did.

My buddy and I go jogging on the national mall once a week. We jog to music. Just passing through, so 30 seconds of rock is not anything to rage about. When I play Led zepplin, everyone joins in and sings along as we pass. No other band has that honor.
