A bridge in Paris collapsed under the weight of love locks. We don't want anything like that to happen in our city so we decided that we will clean our bridge (the Charles bridge) from the mess tourists made here. Please don't take it the wrong way - we want you to come to Prague and to have a nice time here. But please don't destroy our heritage sites by putting up some stupid locks. Come to our city but treat it with respect. Leave Prague in a better state than you found it, not the other way around. Or else - there will be no Prague for you to discover...

In moscow we had this issue they built metal trees for the love locks and this wasnt an issue anymore and the lock trees look cool!
Exactly! I think the love locks look incredibly cool if they were in dedicated places :) Just shows that there is humanity in the cities too.
And when the tree is full, just melt the whole thing and make new metal tree.

My city was having a problem with love locks too in a 2220 year bridge. So they put two giant hearts made of metal on each end so tourists put their locks there and not in the monument.
Did it work or were idiots still using the bridge too?
@@andersonomo597 it worked for the most part. But we still rarely catch some idiots putting up locks on the bridge. It works but it isnt the perfect solution.

It's only a matter of time before one of these "love lock" sellers realizes they can keep the keys to the locks they sell, so they can go behind the lovebirds and recover the locks to sell again.
Those locks were probably so cheap to buy for the seller and they are reselling them at such a high price it would probably be a waste of time when they could use that time just pushing more locks.

The only thing is people write/carve their initials on these locks, so you wouldn't really be able to resell them

In Singapore, giant heart sculptures have been built to encourage people to put their love locks on these sculptures instead of on bridges, which I think are great solutions to let people still do the locks if they want while also saving a city's heritage. Love locks aren't even a thing in Pyongyang, but they are across the DMZ in Seoul. Maybe because we have some sense.

As an off and on resident of Paris, France, over the last 60 years I've seen these "love locks" grow from being placed on one bridge after another, till finally, as you pointed out, the railings on some of them began to collapse under the weight. With millions of tourists visiting each year, the number of locks being placed everywhere became a blight that plagued every beautiful monument and bridge in the city. Another thing that concerned Parisians was also the astronomical number of lock keys that were thrown into the Seine after a lock was placed... finally to corrode and polute the waters with tons of toxic metals. I've even witnessed the mindlessness of couples and families attaching locks to railings that were already beginning to fall from a bridge.
Not to mention that you're supposed to throw the keys in the water. Polluting the waterway with tons of cheap metal

Generally speaking a lot of metals are VERY BAD for your health. Just to give u some more examples: mercury, uranium(yes thats a metal), plutonium (also a metal), manganese, chromium, sellenium. And this list is still missing most toxic metals.
KimiDesu nickel and chromium are some metals that are used in electroplating parts for decoration and anti corrosion protection. And guess what...they are toxic.

Y'all should put a rope lock (like a bike lock) with a big sign that says 'Put Your Love Locks Here' on the fence (or on a separately mounted hanger to further protect the fence) - then when it's full, simply unlock the rope lock and slide the locks off. Melt them down and make a 'living' statue (growing, changing with each iteration) from the melted down locks.
The idea of having a seperate non bridge area to put locks for the concious would be interesting to see how many it gets vs real bridge

A fun Idea: Have local artists make big heart shaped statues made out of chain link, and metal, place them in places that they will fit, and people can put their locks on there.
That's what I was thinking, there are so many local artist they could come up with something beautiful, statues or monuments,works of art with this locks people can continue to keep putting locks on them , that would also bring tourism to the art scene. Sure why not just melt them instead 🤦🏻♀️

The keys are also thrown into the lakes. Potentially oxidation causing the key to dissolve and cause more harm than good.
They just had to mess up the environment by not doing the smallest things.

The metal in the keys (brass) is absolutely harmless to the lake. The only issue potentially coilf be the amount of keys but that’s also insignifigant to the size of the river

1:38 as a guy who did welding, it hurts me to see someone not wear face protection while using a grinder. Trust me, if the disk breaks and you got nothing between your face and the disk, you might end up with one scared for life if you don't die

As soon as you said they buy it here and then walk to the bridge to lock it on, my mind immediately thought "oh god that's actually genius, what if the shop owners kept the second keys knowing this and then just go back and grab it afterwards?" Sustainable income at 20 euros a pop
Honestly they will be buying in those locks for pennies so it's most likely not even worth their time. The profit margins for them must be astronomical.

The problem isn't the product but the people themselves, which is why it should be made a crime and/or be a finable offence. And there are the places that becomes a landmark because of doing something like this...which was the case for the infamous Gum Wall in Seattle. So the gum wall started in the 90s after the theater next door became home to Unexpected Productions' Theatresports and the patrons who came to the theater would stick their gum on the wall before they entered. No matter how many times the local authority tried to clean it, the gum has remained, and the authority later decided to keep it and declare it a tourist attraction in 1999. It went through a deep cleaning in 2015 to remove over 2K pounds of gum to prevent the degradation of the brick, and once the cleaning was complete...people were back to sticking gum on the wall.
Putting love locks on a bridge or gum on a wall doesn't give a city character, it ruins their reputation by encouraging tourists to do it.
Here's a better idea.
- Find locks that unlock easy using hidden button/magnet/etc. No specific key or bolt cutters are required but it's not obvious they unlock easy.
- Sell them to tourists so they write on it and put it on a bridge or something.
- Hire a few guys to out every evening to remove locks. Clean them (people likely use Sharpies, it cleans easy with acetone). Then repackage in a new box.
- Sell the locks again the next day. No need to cut, scrap and buy completely new locks.
- Rinse and repeat.

We had the same problem in Wrocław Poland. Maybe Tumski Bridge is not as a big and as beautiful as Charles bridge, but love locks were so heavy that whole bridge had to be rebuild

These lock have been affecting the bridges in my hometown too. But one is not allowed to remove them without a permit, because it would result in a citation for damaging public buildings, as one COULD damage the railings by removing the locks...
how about lockpicking? it's probably easier on the hands, these locks are pretty cheap stuff, so picking them wouldn't be all that hard, and you won't damage the railing in the process

Currently Cracow is removing those stupid locks from one of our bridges. One of the option is to melt them into an art piece, I would suggest a monument to tourist stupidity.
In Prague you can buy 20 euro of good weed instead of a lock, smoke it and enjoy the historical stuff even more.

How narcissistic do you have to be to ruin a historical bridge and monuments because you want to declare your love? Or is your love just that fragile that you need to validate it publicly? This should be classified as vandalism and people who participate in this should be fined heavily.
I learned as a young Navy brat never, ever disrespect the place you are visiting especially foreign countries. Took that to my time as an adult and passed that on to my kid whose in the military. Don’t mess with other people stuff…..great vid.

We have a bride in Cologne with a fence (its like only bars) where you can see through. Well atleast you could, bc there are so many locks, you literally cant see through it anymore
France has a newer bridge with removable bars so they can periodically come along and remove locks and replace the bar
they should show off all the love locks and have a sign that says "you're gonna break up anyways"

I hope you continue cleaning up the bridge and rid it off all the locks that are destroying it! Next time I visit Prague I will make sure not to add any locks but to remove some locks and do my part in cleaning up not only the country of Prague but slowly cleaning up our planet
