How Locals Stay in Waikiki (what we pack, eat, and do)

  • On a recent staycation in Waikiki with the family, I noticed how locals stay in Waikiki versus how tourists stay in Waikiki. There are definitely advantages to staying in Waikiki as a local, especially in what we pack and bring to the hotel. We also eat at differenty places generally and do different activities. It doesn't mean that locals "do" Waikiki better than tourists. I just noticed that we do it differently because we have access to it all the time.
    Mahalo to Level 8 for sending me the Voyageur Luggage Set (20 inch and 26 inch). In full transparency, they sent me the luggage set for free to review. I don't have any affiliate links, but here's a link to the exact luggage set they sent me. Again, I really like the handle design, as it made it easier for me to navigate the suitcase. www.level8cases.com/products/...

    Thanks for the vlog! Got nostalgic at the end. Brings back a lot of memories for me going outer island with all the cousins/calabash cousins and all the good times. Definitely the interactions and the time spent together were highlights of those trips.

    My family and I vacationed in Waikiki at the tale end of 2020. Just as the pandemic lockdowns were getting into full swing and while it was an absolutely beautiful trip, it was a shame that we weren't able to try a lot of the local shops/restaurants because of the closures. I really want to visit again to get the full experience.

    Most water heaters has a temperature setting. If you turn up the setting on your hot water heater to produce hotter water. Which will have the affect of more hot water available for multiple showers. Keep in mind the water may be much hotter coming out of the shower.

    There really isn’t a difference between packing for a staycation and far away. I never want to forget something and go back home. Anywhere else, the traveling distance is much more than 10 minutes. That’s practically a hike. I met many locals vacationing at Aulani which is a longer drive and more isolated. That’s like me going to Disneyland Resort to get away for a few hours. I’m about a 30 minutes drive away. For a beach trip, I stayed one night at Laguna Beach. Having a ocean view room is really relaxing.

    Aye brah you know what’s funny we’re filipino and every time we go vacation to Hawaii either it be Oahu or Maui all the white tourist think I work there like a local lol. They be asking me for directions and where’s the valet parking lol. I tell them I’m a tourist too and they look at me like I’m messing around with them lol. Take care man can’t wait to there again

    Have you stayed at Barbers Point or Bellows? The kids love it, and you can invite the family over. They got to see turtles and a monk seal lounging on the beach.

    i will say, living on island theres an ambiance to all the local beaches on the island that have their pros, but the perk of waikiki that other beaches dont have is that the beach itself is has a low volume of reef, goes out far at a standable level, and is that hawaiian blue, lots of room for the folks who dont know the true dangers of the ocean.

    Chris, thanks for the vlog. I can totally relate to everything you shared...
    We've been coming to Oahu for many years. Started at the Hilton Hawaiian Village when my girls were young. We've stayed at other places as well. Just returned from vacation with my wife only at Alohilani last night. Most recently stayed at Embassy Suites with my grown daughters last summer since they have a separate bedroom. We love eating all the local food. My first stop was at Off The Hook Poke. We also ate at O'Kims which was outstanding. We also ate at Seafood Cartel which was amazing. Although we always stay in Waikiki, my favorite beaches are Sherwoods and Lanikai. I also love the course sand at Sunset.
    I always look forward to returning back to the islands. I feel so connected to everything.
    Aloha!

    I love the Hale Koa, we go every year for about 2 weeks. My aunt and uncle go to all those restaurants that you can find anywhere but I prefer to go to the more local spots. I love trying all the different foods. I like cheesecake factory as much as the next person but I want a good plate lunch with poi! I over packed my first time and now I just use a back pack, the less you have, the less you need to keep track of, and the less stress!

    Hello from Alaska. 👋🏼 I, too, bring a small paper towel roll. 😜 Also, I pack my clothes in kitchen trash bags. If for some reason my suitcase is opened, everything is still contained within. Not strewn everywhere. Eeew. 😝 Doubles as a laundry basket, too. 🧺 Pack a few extras. Luckily I had mom 🥰 with me on one of these trips. She got the B-52! 🪳😖🌴❤️

    Uuuu…. Excellent recommendation for suitcases. I bring folding paper towels, trash bags, paper plates, utensils 🍴, and my hydro. And I pack some tea bags so I can make my own ice tea. I love shopping at foodland and pick up breakfast items so I’m able to save money. And spend money on dinners. I always pa k my own recycle bags for groceries and use them for beach time. And yes family time is so important.

    Mahalo Chris. I'd like to hear your take on where locals (and I'm using the term loosely here) prefer to stay (i.e. which resorts, hotels, motels, Airbnbs, Aunty's house, etc.) when taking a 'Staycation' on Oahu (and maybe some of the other Islands). Sure, Waikiki is THE destination, but there are lots of other beautiful places people may may want to visit and explore. Families with kids, groups, people looking for nightlife (yeah, Waikiki), military, singles, hikers, kayakers, divers, foodies, retired couples, etc. may all want/need something a little different. Maybe a good topic for a Part 2 of this video? Aloha.

    Chris, you're so funny. The college going on the mainland shows, because if you had gone UH or your high school friends went, will tell you about being in class and temperatures at UH for fall and spring. Blazing hot in fall, rainy springs and being in Manoa, it's common to have a pouring rain morning and scorching hot afternoon. Enjoying A/C & hot showers pre solar days was tough, now it's electric bill. In your home situation, I'm thinking it's the size of water heater tank in the condominium. Trust me when the kids get bigger with teen/adult showers, that tank might be even less. I think you should have one episode, where you check out other TH-camrs, like Amanda & Felix, if they have suggestions of family-oriented food reviewed places in Waikiki. I've seen some interesting videos, but they are a couple, but they do reviews on good eats, but they move around, and I don't know if one was only Waikiki and family oriented. Things will change once the boys get bigger and running with dad & mom in Waikiki, so it should be even better. Good video.

    • @HelloFromHawaii
      @HelloFromHawaii  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mahalo for the suggestions. There's definitely places we'd like to eat in Waikiki, but it's different when you have young kids. The options are less and more things to consider than if it was just me and my wife.

  • @EvilTheOne
    @EvilTheOne 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I would guess that tourist would be eating out, and not in the hotel room, therefore less chance of them bringing back take-out plate lunch containers.
    Eventually as your kids outgrow their strollers, it might give way to you getting a four-wheel wagon. It'll probably take up around the same space, as they all fold up nowadays.
    As I don't like running my expensive air conditioning at home, I relish in 'free' air conditioning. I would sometimes stay at work a little longer, on a very hot day, just to soak up the 'free air con.
    Some of the issues with your water heater is #1 the size of the tank, you may be running out of hot water by the time it becomes your turn. Either that or you have to wait a little time for it to heat up the water that's currently in the tank. Or it may be your heater's thermostat, although you don't want one that can get too hot, because you have young children.
    The main thing about eating and spending time together, turn off all the electronics...at home or on the stay-cation. Have you ever seen a bunch of people eating at a table, and some being on their smartphones, there're not 'there'. People need to exists in these moments, for they'll never come again.

    I'm not going to drink coffee before watching any more of your videos because I pissed in my pants with this one. Suitcases to visit Waikiki and you live 10 minutes away? Friend, do you realize how absurd you've been getting with some of this stuff?. As far as tourists in Waikiki, another duh moment here they own it, since the 1930s. Regardless of where any "local" choses to eat on Waikiki, or why including McDuck's it's local people cooking and serving it to you right? One thing at the beach in Waikiki that isn't as common elsewhere on the island are the tons of homeless and mentally challenged idiots you'll have to walk around on the street. You mentioned on your Maui video you haven't spent much time outer island. Perhaps for your next family Everest expedition you might try Kauai, 15 minutes away. You've got good luggage to field test too.
