Surfing is one of those funny stereotype things for us local people. I've never surfed, most of my friends, who were born and raised here don't surf. But when people meet me on the mainland, a lot of times they'll ask me if I surf. A lot of people in Hawaii surf, but there are almost 1.5 million residents, it would be crazy to think that the majority of us surf.

I remember being surprised when you talked before about growing up in Kaneohe and did not go to the beach much. Maybe your parents were not beach goers. Here on the north shore where I live, going to the beach is a part of life. The kids all had to learn to swim when young so that they could just walk to the beach to go swimming any time with their friends. Part of regular life and, lets face it, this is a free, fun activity that can still be enjoyed by all in Hawaii no matter how poor you feel. Poke, Kona coffee and outer island trips are going to need money.

As a tourist like me , I couldn’t wait to try it. We headed off to Ono Seafood on Kapahula Ave and loved it. _Poke?_ What's that? I've never really heard about it, except on food blogs.
But during my stays in Hawaii, I've eaten _kalua pua_ (roast/steamed pig), _laulau_ (meat wrapped in taro leaves) and _poi_ (taro root puree).
Not at an authentic _luau,_ unfortunately for me, but off from a mini-supermarket shelf. They're quite delicious, though poi is probably an acquired taste.

I just saw your video on Japanese words used by Japanese from Hawaii that Japanese nationals don’t understand and I think I have a couple of them that I can explain. The first one is “Hana bata”. This one is half Japanese and half pidgin English . Hana of course is nose in Japanese and “Bata” is the Pidgin English for butter. Thus “nose butter”. Kinda gross but pretty accurate. The other one is Habuteru. This one is more “pouty” than grouchy. That’s about all that I can explain. I really enjoy your vlogs and I find them quite interesting! Keep it up! Mahalo

I never owned a surfboard, but can surf, and had plenty of friends who surfed and always had an extra board if I wanted to go. I don't typically tell people on the mainland that I surf, though. People who surf are going out 5-6 days a week.
The poke thing is kind of weird. I always thought poke was all about the fish. I never really thought of it as having a dressing, unless you're talking about poke bowls, which I associate more with the mainland.
Coffee is perfectly understandable. Just because we grow it doesn't mean there's a strong coffee culture. That's like thinking people in Hawaii eat pineapple with every meal.
I grew up on Kauai and always liked watching movies filmed there to see the locations or if I recognized any of the extras, but you're absolutely right about how they mix up all the locations (even when it's supposed to be set on the island).
And I don't think I know anybody who's been to all the islands. I was talking with a coworker from Oahu about the fires on Maui and we both had the same experience of everyone asking us about it and how sorry they are, and it's like, yeah it's Hawaii, but it's a completely different island. I went there once when I was 7 or 8. It's not like driving to the next town over. If you don't have a reason to go to another island you most likely wont.

    • @HelloFromHawaii

Mahalo for sharing. I don't think I could commit to surfing 5-6 days a week. That's a different kind of lifestyle. 😁

For poke, the fish quality is everything (I avoid any fish that looks brightly colored). If it's with rice, then the rice is second most important. The sauce is always the least important. Its usually just shoyu, oyster sauce, sugar, mirin, and sesame oil. Give it a try next time you go Off the Hook! Then you might get to keep your kamaaina status lol.

Here's an idea, how about making a video of you trying to do some of those things on your list?. I think it would be fun to see your reaction. As far as surfing, it is a skill that needs to be learned over time, but you could certainly Boogie Board right away(go someplace easy, like Waikiki) & don't forget da fins. Poke you must try at least once. Drinking coffee(make sure you do it in the morning). At least you can say you tried it once....Not everyone will enjoy everything Hawaii has to offer & that's ok.

    (1) Surfing is pretty fun but everything has to line up just right to be a kid who grows up surfing. I grew up surfing but it was always small junk waves I could walk to. But, it seemed a lot more entertaining when I grew up with about 3 TV channels in black and white and bedtime is 7:30 etc.
    (2) Poke is pretty solid. You should try it, but not the stuff where they put a ton of other stuff in the bowl. That's for tourists. Get the good stuff they put on top of good sushi rice. Locals look at poke with regard to the quality of the fish, mainlanders look at the sauce and how much extra crap they gonna throw in there too.
    (3) Kona coffee is OK. My favorite coffee is actually that stuff the Vietnamese Pho' places have, that comes in the orange can. Get that and a good pour-over coffee maker like a Hario V60 and that's some good coffee.
    (4) TV shows about Hawaii are a mixed bag, they can be fun. The old Hawaii Five-O was fun because of recognizing the places. I used to watch Dog the Bounty Hunter a bit because it would show regular average neighborhoods. And I recently watched From Here To Eternity and it was fun seeing Schofield and places in the old-old days.
    (5) I've only been to Oahu (raised ages 5-25) Big Island (few days) and Molokai (few hours lol).

I can understand not going to the beach or going surfing. Those things you kind of take for granted if you a local Hawaiian, just like I never been to the Statue of Liberty living in NYC, but Pok'e? Bro I been going to Hawaii for the past two years and lived on the stuff each time. Even my friend who went to college at BYU Hawaii and lived there for 3yrs loves Pok'e, we been trying to find a good Pok'e place here in NYC. If you should decide to try it, the best Pok'e place that I found in Waikiki is a little place called "Deep Blue." I went there so much the manager thought I was local.

Funny video. I was laughing on the surfing discussion. Not that I surf, but coming from a long-time golfer, which I don't really golf, I thought was hilarious. Growing up in Kailua, enjoying the water was good considering I grew up closer to the mountains and hills than the beach. I also live in Kaneohe, and it doesn't have beaches like Kailua, so I can see not having access to beach & play time there might be less interesting. Both golfing and surfing have aspects that can be similar. Both are mental and physical disciplines, requiring senses, physical ability, patience, and timing. Long hours of practice are needed to improve. Both strive for perfection, enjoyment of pleasure. Neither activity is one that anyone can pick up and be great at. Like everything else, it takes practice and determination. I imagine when one hits a hole in one on a tough course par, it must give the same pleasure of catching a super wave and a nice ride. No different from a skier or snow board rider, enjoying the course and the ride. It's an accomplishment. It's one of an audience of one against self, whereas, group sports, it's the thrill of competition against another set of people. I played enough sports as a youth with the guys, for football, basketball, volleyball, softball but also bowling, body surf, tennis, racquetball, bowling that you can see the challenges like games, chess, checkers, go, backgammon, stratego, monopoly how sports/games hone different skills in a person. Enjoy what you like and appreciate what you gain from it.

    • @HelloFromHawaii
      @HelloFromHawaii  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I guess golf and surfing may be similar, but I've mostly played golf in a competitive environment. Maybe competitive surfing isn't too bad since you're out there and there's a time element.

Chris, I won't ask you to turn in your Hawaii "local's card" cuz I can relate to some of the things that you mentioned. I'm not much of a coffee drinker, although I have drunk the local coffee before. I just find that the smell of coffee in general is better than the flavor. I'm still the guy who gives Kona coffee as gifts to mainland family and friends.
As for surfing, I've never done it. When I tell people that, they are amazed, since I lived in Hawaii for 22 years. I have to explain to them that my eyesight is so bad that I would be a danger to myself and anyone around me if I tried. Nobody who surfs wants someone like that out on the waves. I used to body surf, but after getting munched seriously at Sandy Beach one time when I was a student at UH, I didn't do that much, if at all. I hurt my back really bad and am very fortunate I didn't end up paralyzed.
Funny you should mention that you haven't watched any of the locally filmed shows. I didn't see any of the original Magnum shows until many years later. At the time I didn't have a TV, and when I finally had access to one, I didn't care to watch it. Have to say I enjoy the original over the remake, the same as with Hawaii Five-0. Nowadays, I mostly watch just to see familiar places, since I've been on the mainland for the past 23 years.
Last but not least, I still haven't been to Moloka'i and Lana'i, and I don't expect to go to Kaho'olawe or to get an invite to Ni'ihau, either.

From the documentaries I have seen, most of surfing is not photogenic or prestigious. Most of your time is spent paddling flat on your stomach trying to meet up with a wave.
The well known, pretty part of surfing where you are standing tall on the board cruising the top of the wave is the LAST 10 percent of the process.

I score 3/5. Surfing is scary--something about deep water and the possibility of Kamohoali'i aka manô lurking beneath the surface. It's hard not to drink Kona coffee while working in a restaurant or a hotel. It's actually Kona "blend" because 100% Kona is supa' expensive! Watched the original "Hawaii Five-O" which shows you how old I am. Never watched Hawaii 5-0 2.0. Did they keep the original theme song? Most locals have never been to Moloka'i and Lanai...or tourists. Moloka'i, in spite of its "Friendly Isle" moniker, is far from it. There was a Safari Park economic "diversification" effort at one time. And NOBODY can go to Ni'ihau.
Ever climb up Diamond Head before all the infrastructure and crowds? The Sunshine Festivals were very cool--the closest thing to Woodstock, but not crazy like Burning Man.

Some things just stick in your mind. Loved it. Best times of my life. As far as poke probably when I was bringing up my kids in Kailua. I ate all kinds of raw stuff. Star Supermarket used to carry "prepared crab" basically raw crab with spicy stuff on it. Man my mouth's watering. Even though I lived close to the beach I never surfed either. As a matter of fact, I had some school mates who lived in the valleys who had never even been to the beach! What about Huli Huli Chicken? I just like saying that, especially after hearing the funny pop song about it. Cracks me up everytime. I tried Poke, my first time in Oahu, just after Labor Day 2023. It was good, but I think it says something that I ordered it my first day in Oahu, and didn't order it again for the next 5 days of my stay. I have no complaint, I have eaten sushi over the years--so raw fish is not foreign concept to me either. I would just seek out other local foods first...and did so from Ala Moana food trucks ---going all the way to LuLu's (good stuff) by Kuhio beach--and even going all the way to the food trucks way up in Kahuku. As for the water--my experience with water, growing up near dozens of freshwater Wisconsin lakes--loved swimming as a kid, haven't done it nearly as much in several decades of being an adult. I did swim for a grand total of maybe 25 minutes (as grand total, not daily) over the course of 6 days on Oahu. And well, that 25 minutes probably spanned two visits to the beach, so average of 12.5 minutes in the water per visit . :-) Beautiful water, beautiful island. Personally, I just prefer to enjoy the island on land, or be in a boat🙂

I can totally relate as can my husband. We both grew up in Honolulu (Kaiser and Iolani) and moved away after college. We both don’t surf. I love poke my husband not at all and it’s because he isn’t a fan of sashimi or raw fish.
We both have never been to Molokai or Lanai. I wouldn’t include Niihau since it’s not open to just visit and Kooholawe is not safe to visit. Until a couple of years ago my husband had not been to the Big Island. We visited and it was great - no relatives there for either of us! We both love Kona and Kauai coffee but we are coffee drinkers.
Oh and TV shows filmed in Hawaii? I can’t watch either. Thus goes back to the original 5 O show. How did you go from Sandy Beach side and end up in Pearl City??
I would say you are not as alone as you think!

Surfing is also a California thing. Nope, never done it because I live too far from the beach and I heard about surf squatters who evict people they don’t like. Poke has invaded California. It’s everywhere. It’s not all raw. There’s some cooked seafood like tuna, octopus, shrimp. I don’t add rice, add salad only. I love Kona coffee, but seems like most grinds are 10% Kona. A medium roast is good enough. A show about Hawaii is redundant, but shows about Los Angeles is unavoidable. I liked LA LA Land.
Besides Oahu, been to Big Island, Kauai, and Maui. It’s like going to Catalina Island when in California. A nice diversion.

Howzit Chris🤙🏼 really enjoy your thoughts and perspectives of life on O’ahu. You and few other local TH-cam channels, provides backdrops of places of memories of life in Hawaii. Been away for quite sometime; ohana backed up and moved to mainland during early 70s. A few years later I was fortunate enough to get orders to Oahu at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe 1980-1984. Our last visit, the wife and I visited ohana on Maui and Lanai’ back in 2001. Lana’i not for surfing as I recall, Lana’i isn’t known for getting waves large enough to surf. But, we did head to the beach as often as we could. When not swimming, we were fishing. Mostly spear fishing… can pick the you like eat fish and not wait for what you might catch with a fishing pole. Mahalo for sharing your videos with us. I’m sure it takes quite a bit of time and work to create each video and I greatly appreciate all your efforts to continue post such insightful content. Here's my take:
Surfed once, didn't care for it because like you, not much into the ocean/beach; and it took too much time...tranquil though.
Poke once, but I like my fish fried...bad for us, but so 'ono'.
Kona coffee, and coffee in general, don't much care for hot beverages, that includes tea and hot chocolate.
Hawaii TV shows get to me for the same reason. And it's not like a TV show made in California makes it a point to accentuate that they're making the show there. But going overboard pointing out landmarks, etc...although I did like 'Lost', as the show was shot in Hawaii, but not about Hawaii.
Lanai is my final major island to visit. But with all of the limited flights there and its complications, perhaps when that is settled. The have a big cat/kitten reserve there.
Lastly, consider which items in life may make it onto your 'bucket list'. I really don't have anything left to accomplish, as most everything I wanted to do and more, has been presented to me and experienced. I'm so thankful for that. Might be time for you to start your list...
