My family and I attended this taping, and I remember it well! I think this was filmed in 1965; checking on that. The audience was told to make lots of noise, and to applaud wildly.

I agree on the timeline. In 1966 the vast majority of programs went to color. So 1965 sounds more like it. If not earlier.

Too bad the Lifetime and PAX versions never used real audiences but rather a paid gallery. They just didn’t look as happy with being there as we were watching the shows.

Wow, thanks for posting this! When Supermarket Sweep came to Food Fair in Livingston, NJ in 1966, they used kids - 3 boys and 3 girls - and I was one of the kids (11 years old at the time). Was approached in Food Fair prior to the show's Livingston taping, by a show representative while food shopping with my Mom. I was subsequently interviewed, and chosen to be on the show. What a thrilling memory! How sad I am to hear that the original tapes are no longer available, how I wish I could see that episode and my 11 year old self. Oh well! It was very exciting though, and I got tons of food and prizes too.

The date of this episode is March 28, 1967. Bill Malone says it's the anniversary of the 1797 patent of the washing machine in New Hampshire. According to washing machine history, "On this day, March 28, in 1797 the first United States patent for 'Clothes Washing' was granted a New Hampshire man, Nathanial Briggs." Nice to have a date for this great upload.

food fair was one of the largest grocery chain in the 1930s through 1978 (most of the stores were converted to pantry pride) when it filed bankrupsy that year. Revlon and gristedes took over the florida locations. the last store closed in 1992.

This is actually my favorite version of the three that have been on the air. I'll take Mr. Malone's affable but dignified vibe over the rather loud Leslie Jones and the mechanical David Ruprecht who said the exact same words each and every broadcast. I like hosts who can improvise a bit but still stay on track. I also loved that these shows were all taped on location but the legal industry and grocery retail corporations would likely never agree to something like this now!

@Hondo20132 And portions of this were shown in the contestant call promo for the new Supermarket Sweep. @ChihuahuaboyDH Bill Malone passed away in the late 1990's. The series' last season saw "Supermarket Sweep" relocate to a Florida shopping mall with a revamped format and re-titled "Supermarket Sweep presents 'The Honeymoon Race.'" Newlywed couples went racing around the mall in golf carts in a hunt for merchandise.
The original Food Fair chain was renamed Pantry Pride in 1970. It eventually went bankrupt in 1981 and only a handful in the south survive today. This store is gone.

Back then, they hired chefs for the cooking at the restaurant at large hotels. Even Jacques Pepin started at Howard Johnsons, seriously!! Hotels really were luxury, it was the much smaller motels and Mom & Pop type of places along the old 2 lane highways, much before Interstate system was fully built that people did not have a restaurant on site, no free breakfast, no grab and go foods, and hotels were not as prevalent nor as commonly located as they are today.

I believe that despite their claim of "going all over the country", that the original "Supermarket Sweep" almost always originated from just five metropolitan areas: New York, Detroit, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, the five cities where ABC had owned stations (and presumably, mobile units).

My error...I guess the real issue is that while it offered an alternative to ANDY GRIFFITH reruns, it apparently couldn't make a ongoing ratings dent--especially given NBC's programming turnover in the same slot. A more important one may have been the onset of color...the expense of doing a show that went from location to location, and the possibility the local ABC station might not have the capacity to send out a color feed.(some affiliates didn't have color for their own programming until the 1970's)
