Everyone gives your dad a ton of praise, and rightfully so, but you're a good son too. Could easily be doing some dumb sh*t but the pair of you are building something together, and that's admirable.
This channel has definitely helped me with my anxiety on how I approach my diy remolding projects, as in being able to plan ahead properly and break a big project into little sections until completed. Thanks for these videos and keep up the great work!!
7:12 an outswing door is an awesome idea, I might steel that for our laundry, its a tiny little room, its only about 500mm wider than the door (so around 1320mm) and its always a hassle opening the door inwards.

Have the door swing infront of the washer/dryer? People dont usually need to get right to their laundry from outside and then you could do a coat rack in that open area for right when they come in. Just my opinion :)
Good or bad I use my W/D as a temporary drop spot coming in from the garage; groceries, mail, purse, etc. I would not want the doors swinging in front of them.
1977 and 1978 last two years of school I took carpentry in our local vo-tech taking the carpentry course. Trade classes built two houses each year. You guys have an amazing father/son friendship. Love it! And these videos are great too; they're entertaining and educational. I'm always learning something new. Especially the tile chipper. It made the tile removal look easy.

I also love the feedback with us down in the comments as well. Keep up the amazing work and I hope the best for you guys!
Hey I just want to say how much I appreciate your content. I know you get many back seat contractors, but I have learned a lot from you channel. Keep up the good work!!!
Sometimes your able to cut the birds mouth into the top of the binding post and notch it into a strong back laid across the top of the joist to take the split tendency away from the heel cut but giving the joint a solid load rest. You guys kick ass, always putting out clean work. Hats off to you boys! Smashing the "like"... , like always.
I can't wait to see the next steps of this pantry install, especially the supports for the shelving and the pocket door install. Keep up the great work!
I "made" a switch that does nothing. Replaced one of the two way switches in a hallway with a motion sensor and the other does nothing now. But, I left a "note" on the back side of the switch plate for future reference
If you have a switch that doesn’t do anything, and it’s an older house, it likely controls one of the sockets or both on a plug for switched lighting. Ceiling lights used to be less common, so lamps were wired so that you could control them from a wall switch.
Love the attention to detail and quality of work. Used your first kitchen series as a guide for doing my first kitchen renovation, was the most helpful series by far.
Paul, great videos and really dig your sons enthusiasm. If you haven’t already check with your structural engineer on the roof bracing. It’s kind of hard to tell from the video but it seems the angle the brace makes with the roof is greater than 90 degrees which may not provide enough support.
I like the idea of moving the washer and dryer back. That is extra space for the life of the house. If you have the side room, I found that there are kits for most dryers that allow you to vent out the side instead of the back.
One more great video. You enjoy your work as I see in each episode. Your knowledge is so far reaching I am disappointed I did the wrong profession. Thanks and i learn so much with you guys.
Took an old covered furnace flue in my already small house, and opened it up, ( during the remodel) removed the cinder block, lined it with cedar boards, from trees I took down, cut on my sawmill. Now got room 3 shelves ,and room for more junk.
Thanks. Always learn something from your work. Funny, though. I just ripped out two walk-in pantries and replacing them with a bank of upper/lower cabinetry to gain floor space.
@16:30 With those concrete driven nails, to pre-drill to *under* the complete depth of the nail? So that it mushrooms inside the concrete and provides the grip that way?
Hi guys, firstly check your local building codes in regards to the door swing direction. Does it need to be fire rated? If so does it matter which way the doors hung. It looks like a carport / garage to me, does the owner park (or potentially) their car in there? If so would two cars be able to fit without the door opening into them? Also make sure you the correct hinges for security reasons. Personally I wouldn't mind an outswing door if its doable.
Man that pole scraper thing is amazing, I remember it from a previous video. On a huge project that is the only way to go. Doesn't an outswing door have the hinge bolts on the outside? That's a security risk. Jordan had a great idea on that cut corner!
I'd change the outside door swing so it opens against the dryer. Keep it an inside swing for various reasons. But this is the 'mud room' entry so by swinging it against the dryer you open all that space for walking in and give space for boots, whatever. Nice work and great explanations and education as usual. Loved the pushups! And done pretty well too! Warms my old drill sergeant heart! :-)
@@adsbadsb9488 That's a good point, but even as it is the door would not open if the dryer door is open, so changing the swing is a wash IMO. But, with the dryer there you could make a stronger argument for an outswing door.
All dryers I've seen have the hinge on the right-hand side, so even if the dryer door were ajar, the action of opening the outside door against it would simply close the dryer door.
Always enjoy your videos. This is a great project and amazing that just the 2 of you take on such big jobs and homeowners are still in the home ! I renovated my own 2 family Duplex style house by myself. Could live in one side while doing the other. Gutted 2 bathrooms and 2 kitchens. Demo work and hauling the debris was the toughest. I broke up 2 cast iron tubs located on the second floor and tore out the tiled walls......Tubs were from 1948 and must have weighed 300lbs.....Busted them up with a 18b sledge and carted it all downstairs, 1 trash can at a time.....Not fun......The pushups were funny....My old geezer body can't do 'em anymore....lol

Outswing doors come with security hinges. There's a setscrew inside that captures the pin and then there is a tab on one leaf of the hinge that engages a slot in the other leaf when closed. You'll destroy the door before getting them off.

Out swing doors belong on 70's trailers! Just my opinion, what is the wind like in the carport? is it gonna catch and throw Mrs. Homeowner across the yard?
Rather than a motion sensor what about a door jamb switch equivalent for pocket doors. Something that turns the light on when the door is open and off when it is closed.
and for those of you who do not do this for a living but like that scraper....Harbor Freight has one for just over $100.....if you only need it for 1 or 2 jobs around the house OR an occasional job, buying a cheap crappy one is sometimes a good idea. Now, if you do this a LOT like these guys, buying a good quality tool that's going to pay for itself is a good idea.
