  • The upcoming Taylor Swift concerts in Singapore received support from the authorities in the form of a grant, said the Singapore Tourism Board and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth in a joint statement on Feb 20. READ MORE: str.sg/e5uT
The statement follows Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin's comments on Feb 16 that the Singapore Government offered subsidies in exchange for Swift agreeing not to perform elsewhere in South-east Asia.

If the Singapore government has analysed the situation and feels it’s a fair return it’s just smart business. It’s aggressive and possibly unpopular in neighbouring countries but the government would have included that in their calculations. Singapore has a history of being the regional Center for international based entertainment. They have amazing venues, a great airport and lots of hotels. It’s something they have focused on and promoted. Seems like a good idea.

You ought to take ethics lessons again. Providing grants in exchange for NOT performing in rival cities is unethical. This is different to offering more money to incentivise her to do more in Singapore but still giving her the free will to decide whether she could stage her shows on Thailand or elsewhere. The result may well be the same in that Taylor Swift feels that Thailand doesnt have much to offer and tickets cant be priced high enough for that market. But that is for Swift to work out with the cities that are willing to host her concerts. Very disappointed in Singapore

This is the Thai PM giving 2nd hand info from the promoter. It could be a miscommunication or misinterpretation. Maybe he ask the promoter to bring the tour to Thailand and the promoter said SG provided grants, can Thailand also provide grants? And this was interpreted as "SG paid Swift so that she won't bring tour to other countries in SE Asia."
BUT... Straits Times asked STB and MCCY and instead of giving a straight answer that "No, Singapore DID NOT pay Swift to perform exclusively in Singapore" but answered obliquely - that SG has provided Swift with a "grant".
So I wondered, why would a highly successful concert tour require a grant? What was the purpose of the grant? At what point was the grant provided? Because concert tours are usually planned quite far ahead - tickets for the Mar 2024 concerts were on sale in July 2023! So plans would have been made a year ahead or even earlier. If the tour was intended to go to Thailand, it would also have been announced then. If SG wanted exclusivity, they would have to negotiate more than a year ahead. Which is not impossible for a govt that plans very far ahead.
But would US$3m a show be sufficient for Swift to give up other cities? It is clear "profit". Whereas, to put up a show in another city will involve logistics and costs, and booking a venue, etc. And then you get just a percentage of the takings. It sounds plausible and the non-denial from STB and MCCY makes it likely. But at the same time, I think there are other considerations and the way this unfolded, I am more inclined to think that there are other factors considered by the concert promoter/organiser. They would have had to book the venue almost a year in advance (if not earlier), and they would have had to scout for viable locations, consider crowd control, security, logistics, etc. So if the Thai PM wanted Swift to bring her concert to Thailand, he would have had to ask the promoter about a year in advance.
So my last question is, Would Swift have agreed to give up other cities for a US$18m "grant"?
    Honestly, I don't know.

As a singaporean, I appreciate the singapore government and the stadium team being proactive. But I think this will set off a trend I don't like. We already live in a world where money ruins a lot of things. Does it have to ruin this too? Imagine: despite living in a major city, one day you find out that your favourite idols/artists will never come to your city in the next x number of years and you just can't afford to pay for flights, accommodations and tickets in one of the world's most expensive cities. Your hopes are dashed. The way this could have been done to screw the fans over less is if there was a clause in the agreement to lower the concert ticket prices, since the grant would have increased their margins.
As it is, I think this move has screwed over many of Taylor's fans in Asia and possibly many many fans worldwide of other artists over the years to come. Can't say I like Taylor's entertainment partner, that Magnus guy, or the singapore government for this move.

Read international news about the Taylor Swift concert controversy in Singapore.
From the news, it wasn't the manager who was bribed, but Taylor Swift's management, which had an exclusive contract with Singapore.
In my opinion, the guilty and unethical person is Taylor Swift and her management.
They only think about money and profits for themselves. Not thinking about the feelings of his fans in other Southeast Asian countries besides Singapore.
Taylor Swift's class shouldn't be tempted by bribes from Singapore to monopolize this concert.
Taylor should have thought more about the feelings of other Asian fans who want her to concert in their respective countries.
