- The upcoming Taylor Swift concerts in Singapore received support from the authorities in the form of a grant, said the Singapore Tourism Board and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth in a joint statement on Feb 20. READ MORE: str.sg/e5uT
The statement follows Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin's comments on Feb 16 that the Singapore Government offered subsidies in exchange for Swift agreeing not to perform elsewhere in South-east Asia.

If the Singapore government has analysed the situation and feels it’s a fair return it’s just smart business. It’s aggressive and possibly unpopular in neighbouring countries but the government would have included that in their calculations. Singapore has a history of being the regional Center for international based entertainment. They have amazing venues, a great airport and lots of hotels. It’s something they have focused on and promoted. Seems like a good idea.
You ought to take ethics lessons again. Providing grants in exchange for NOT performing in rival cities is unethical. This is different to offering more money to incentivise her to do more in Singapore but still giving her the free will to decide whether she could stage her shows on Thailand or elsewhere. The result may well be the same in that Taylor Swift feels that Thailand doesnt have much to offer and tickets cant be priced high enough for that market. But that is for Swift to work out with the cities that are willing to host her concerts. Very disappointed in Singapore
@@andrewchung83 yes, I agree with you. Singapore grant is cool. Locking out neighbors is not cool.
Concert tourism is the way to go for Singapore that doesn't have much natural attractiions. The economic benefits that mega-popular entertainers bring to the country far outweigh the costs.
The grant subsidy comes out from taxpayer money, but the concert income goes to private sector landlord pocket
@@profitmuhammed I am sure the government collects tax on their revenue. If the government doesn't invest in concert tourism, they will still spend the money building tourist attractions and holding events/festivals which honestly speaking is below the standards of those I have seen in other developed countries like Japan, Korea, Europe.
@@profitmuhammed How much taxes are you paying?
Singapore already gets alot of tourism from all the visits by relatives and friends of resident foreigners' living here.
This is the Thai PM giving 2nd hand info from the promoter. It could be a miscommunication or misinterpretation. Maybe he ask the promoter to bring the tour to Thailand and the promoter said SG provided grants, can Thailand also provide grants? And this was interpreted as "SG paid Swift so that she won't bring tour to other countries in SE Asia."
BUT... Straits Times asked STB and MCCY and instead of giving a straight answer that "No, Singapore DID NOT pay Swift to perform exclusively in Singapore" but answered obliquely - that SG has provided Swift with a "grant".
So I wondered, why would a highly successful concert tour require a grant? What was the purpose of the grant? At what point was the grant provided? Because concert tours are usually planned quite far ahead - tickets for the Mar 2024 concerts were on sale in July 2023! So plans would have been made a year ahead or even earlier. If the tour was intended to go to Thailand, it would also have been announced then. If SG wanted exclusivity, they would have to negotiate more than a year ahead. Which is not impossible for a govt that plans very far ahead.
But would US$3m a show be sufficient for Swift to give up other cities? It is clear "profit". Whereas, to put up a show in another city will involve logistics and costs, and booking a venue, etc. And then you get just a percentage of the takings. It sounds plausible and the non-denial from STB and MCCY makes it likely. But at the same time, I think there are other considerations and the way this unfolded, I am more inclined to think that there are other factors considered by the concert promoter/organiser. They would have had to book the venue almost a year in advance (if not earlier), and they would have had to scout for viable locations, consider crowd control, security, logistics, etc. So if the Thai PM wanted Swift to bring her concert to Thailand, he would have had to ask the promoter about a year in advance.
So my last question is, Would Swift have agreed to give up other cities for a US$18m "grant"?
Honestly, I don't know.
Why stop with swift? Why not exclusivity on water? Just goes to show the level of greed that Singapore has become. You don’t win by denying others. you win by doing better.
Goes to show what type of person swift is. When it comes to it, she got me put some money ahead.
I was thinking the same. But shes earning her keep. Our govt is greedy and all fr money. Dont really care abt the people. To he honest. What they give the people in cash and subsidies they take back tenfold in taxes, raising prices , cost of living! Etc.
Singapore broke the ACAP (Asean Competition Action Plan) Southeast asia should stand up against their sneaky Monopoly

The neighboring countries had the same level of playing field. Their leaders just believed Taylor wasn't important enough.

Someone is a snitch and a big mouth here. And clearly want to exploit the situation escalate into a bidding war for profit. Can AEG be sued for contract disclosure if its terms of contract are signed in confidential? 😂 if thai PM allegations is true.
there was no secret at all
@MrDebmey Statement not from AEG or sg govt. This thai PM even claimed to know the amount per show from who? AEG has yet to confirm or verify. In the aftermath, a statement from the SG government only states it is a grant without specifying on the amt. It's a breach of contract terms if signed in confidentiality. Is AEG responsible for the unofficial leak on the contract specific?
@MrDebmey it's ranted out by thai PM. What's on his agenda? No official statement from AEG. SG government had released a statement on grant given without specifying the amount. Is this a business ethic from a Thai PM?
It's not cheap to grow a mega-event economy. At least SG didn't have hiccups like those faced by HK when it spent lots of money to get a megastar footballer to play in an exhibition match.
I thought the stadium was already full of their domestic fans in HK? I'm not sure what are the hiccups.
@@barely_surviving47 I have no doubts that you know what I meant. I am open for a proper discussion, but only with proper intention.
@@WilliamLionCity I don't know what you meant cos megastar footballer played in Japan as well, the match is not exclusively to HK, mind telling me what are the hiccups now? I doubt the organisers lost any money seeing how the stadium was full with their local fans.
@barely_surviving47 OK, are you aware of the locals' reaction to the debacle? If you are going to reply that you don't know, I won't continue this discussion with you until you find out yourself.
One study in the US has estimated that two Swift's performances in US Colorado could boost their GDP by US$140 million in consumer spending. So STB offering claimed subsidies of up to SGD4 million per show estimated to generate SGD70 million of consumer spending per show is a good investment to position SG as an entertainment hub.
A PM of a country got time to worry about such matter? Go spend time thinking of how to improve the lives of your people lah.
Fantastic! It's so obvious that PAP is the only competent and effective party in s'pore. Remarkable!❤❤
The total economic impact of Swift’s tour is expected to be $5 billion, more than the gross domestic product (GDP) of 50 countries. The total expenses of the average concertgoer so far add up to more than $1,300.
This figure is based on US economy s based on the total Taylor Swift numerous concerts held in in many US state cities
Smart foresight n investment by Singapore government
Singapore is a safest and cleanest place. I’d prefer to attend her concert in Singapore.
Is it permissable to show her baju undergarment in public and surrounding area countries ?
Of course!
She could have performed in Dubai and singapore. Dubai has heavily promoted their tourism.
i like how the question we paid for exclusivity was completely side stepped by the STB / MCCY. Well yes, it's a short term gain but over the long term it hurts relations with our neighbours and creates a potential bidding war for such events in the region in the future. Short sighted at best.
Right? It’s kinda unnecessary to be honest. She would’ve skipped the countries bashing her for her outfits anyway.
This is a business deal and high stake business. No room for emotional/political and abang adek feeling. Best deal takes all.
philippines is never a good neighbour to any country except its american master which it fears. Thailand is a good neighbour.
You do realise that Singapore has no resources or natural attractions at all and has to rely on MICE and concert tourism to survive? Do you think our neighbours will care about us if they are rich as well? Singapore's advantage is its wealth, connectivity and great infrastructure. Taylor Swift has always made Singapore her exclusive stop for her past concert tours in Southeast Asia region, just like how she made Japan her East Asian stop and Australia her Oceania stop. It is only in her last two tours that she included some Southeast Asian countries but ultimately there is no coincidence why she always tour first world countries like Singapore, Japan and Australia only for all her concert tours.
@@sporeKAfan you can still have concerts and mice without having exclusivity terms. Short term this will be seen as win. But what’s stopping the neighbors from banding together and do the same to us? They are that petty and again I see it as shortsighted
Joey Salceda is not satisfied that Philippines only got Taylor Sheesh 😂

Many rich tourists and s'poreans love to see Taylor Swift's live concert in SG bagus is very safe good for our country lah.👏👍
As a singaporean, I appreciate the singapore government and the stadium team being proactive. But I think this will set off a trend I don't like. We already live in a world where money ruins a lot of things. Does it have to ruin this too? Imagine: despite living in a major city, one day you find out that your favourite idols/artists will never come to your city in the next x number of years and you just can't afford to pay for flights, accommodations and tickets in one of the world's most expensive cities. Your hopes are dashed. The way this could have been done to screw the fans over less is if there was a clause in the agreement to lower the concert ticket prices, since the grant would have increased their margins.
As it is, I think this move has screwed over many of Taylor's fans in Asia and possibly many many fans worldwide of other artists over the years to come. Can't say I like Taylor's entertainment partner, that Magnus guy, or the singapore government for this move.
Read international news about the Taylor Swift concert controversy in Singapore.
From the news, it wasn't the manager who was bribed, but Taylor Swift's management, which had an exclusive contract with Singapore.
In my opinion, the guilty and unethical person is Taylor Swift and her management.
They only think about money and profits for themselves. Not thinking about the feelings of his fans in other Southeast Asian countries besides Singapore.
Taylor Swift's class shouldn't be tempted by bribes from Singapore to monopolize this concert.
Taylor should have thought more about the feelings of other Asian fans who want her to concert in their respective countries.
Not Respect Taylor.
Looks like anything goes now with Singapore. Stealing other people lunch is a real strategy, not just a saying anymore. Hope the neighboring countries will not return the favor and steal Singapore lunch.
Toxic sour grapes
You might have a lot more money, Singapore, but the Philippines got the best concert goers ever. When Taylor Swift grows old and her songs replaced by new pop music, they will still be beloved in this country. This is why our kids still sing to Air Supply, Bryan Adams, and Bon Jovi😂 - these are just facts from a non Swifty! Hahaha
Ok 👍👍 I hope you get all the artist when they grow old. I wonder by then do they still intend to perform after making such a huge sum over the years.
Make more money by all means, is the norm here...sadly..

Entertainment grant?Just like Iswaran case?
The Competitive Advantages between cities would not be based on "subsidies" alone.
A mega-star would not be considering just financial considerations. Taylor Swift has given away hundreds of millions of dollars within the span of her Eras Tour.
The choice of venue would have been based on more than the one consideration of Financial Subsidies.
It is not unknown for other governments to offer financial grants - Hong Kong disbursed such a grant for the Football event .
