Met Rakim thru my brother's friend who grew up with the Griffin family. We went to the kick off show of the Paid in Full 30th anniversary touring Boston, we got all access passes and he introduced me and my brother to Rakim and I can't front, I was star struck as well, even though Rakim is not very tall in stature, I saw a Titan. Eric B and Rakim signed my copies of "paid in full" and "Follow the leader" LPS and we took multiple photos including one of Rakim's son. One thing that was very apparent was the Eric B and Rakim do not really get along, the tour was strictly business. Over all it was a night I'll never ever forget
Great story!! Rakim is definitely still one of the greatest to ever bless the mic. You’ve got a few years on me so coming up I wasn’t really listening to Rakim other than hearing him in my older brother’s room. Then in middle school I listened to “My Melody” on my own and was blown away. From then on I was like, “oh yeah” superb lyricist. Shout out to Rakim Allah. The only time I can think of probably being star struck was when I met and chilled with Scarface, gonna do a video on it soon.
I said it before, I will say it again. You had to be in NY when the "R" came out. His songs were playing everywhere, buses, cars, barbershops, bodegas, parks, and police cars ......if you know you know. #Queens
I remember this one time I was record shopping on the south side of Milwaukee. I was a pretty big deal back then and I did not like people in my space. Anyways, this dude tapped me on my shoulder and was like "you wanna buy some records?" I was about to turn around and swing on a fool. But when I turned, I was like " Yo, you're the infamous Darrell D!" Then, you kicked over my wagon of lemons and bounced. I remember like it was yesterday.
Starstruck. Interesting topic. I am interested in the phenomena and how our expectations and/or thoughts interface with reality. Too bad you did not come out to see Qbert, and talk with him. When the Paid in Full album came out, we did not know which one was Rakim and which was Eric B.
These album covers are important historical documents. So great to see your covers. I would always see you with your lp covers at shows waiting to get them signed....I heard from someone that Rakim now asks for $100+ for a signature. PAID IN FULL!!!.
