    This is the Rolls Royce lens of MFT. I recently purchased this lens and your video has opened up new possibilities. Thanks

    I see a lot of video reviews of Lumix DfD and the supposition is it's hunting. And that depends on the lens used. Nevertheless, great video of the 100-400 Elmar. I agree, this lens is impossible to shoot video with, unless you shoot it on a tripod at the longest ranges in P mode or Program Exposure mode. And for panning shots, use the Dual IS2. All my current videos are shot with Lumix G9 and the 100-400 Elmar. And shot in 4K30P at full resolution, with straight out the camera clips rendered to the TH-cam compression ratio of HEVC H.265 @ 38MBs. Insane the compression quality of TH-cam and a 4:2:0 MP4 video clip. Nevertheless, the Lumix cameras have an insane ability to smoothen out the digital gitters of the long lens video movement.

    hallo, do you think this lens is still good even on a OMD body?
    There are major features lost?

    • @RedFrameTech
      @RedFrameTech  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A Lumix lens on an omd body works, but you’ll lose synced stabilisation. Autofocus performance should be the same though

    Hi there. Is there any way to chose OIS over IBIS? Im using a gh5 on a video tripod and IBIS is trying to lock my videos, it would be much smother if I could turn IBIS OFF.
    Seems that I can only turn Dual IS on or off, and not individualy (OIS/IBIS)

    • @RedFrameTech

      Hi Rodrigo. Unfortunately you can’t turn OIS on or off independently from IBIS. Let’s hope Panasonic add this option in the future!

    Perfect lens for vlogging, easy to balance on a gimbal too, I'm sold ! Great video, would have loved to see some zoom range examples. I'm considering the 14-140 Panny or the14-150 Oly for a walkaround lens.

    • @RedFrameTech
      @RedFrameTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not sure if you’re being sarcastic or if you’re actually serious about vlogging and gimbal.. 🤔😄
      I think I will make a follow up video on this lens where I’ll take it out in the field and show some interesting footage including zoom range examples.
      The Panny 14-140 is on my list too.
      Anyway, thanks for your comment 🙏

      @Red Frame Tech Kidding of course :D I'm already struggling with Sigma 16mm 1.4 on the gimbal, that's a heavy setup with the Ronin SC. I don't quite understand how wedding shooters carry that all day. 7.5mm Laowa is probably the best option on a gimbal. I live in China, walking around with a 100-400 would be too conspicuous. Keep up the good work !

      Really like the 14-140 ii on my G9, fantastic walkabout lens, a good amount of reach for zoos/wildlife parks too. Nice smooth zoom action, really light, pleasingly sharp results. Folks like the Olympus too, but I opted for the Panasonic because of the dual I.S. compatibility with the G9 - if you have an Olympus body though, might not be so clear cut.

      @StirfriedGerman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ericaceous1652 Good feedback, cheers ! Dual IS is indeed nice to have, although the G9 is really good on its own too. The Oly is said to be a bit better optically, but it's probably minor. However, it has a real manual focus ring.

    Great job! I have the 100-300mm and will be comparing it with a friend's 100-400mm to decide whether to upgrade for a trip to Amazon & Galapagos. I'll be checking out your other videos.
    On another topic, I'm starting to record 10bit 422 with my G9. I've figured out how to overcome the "green screen of death" when viewing out of camera video. Successfully converted the file to Prores, and the the video works with my editors. What's your experience with 10bit 422 from the G9 and is it worth the effort?

    • @RedFrameTech
      @RedFrameTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks 🙏 I really enjoy and make use of the 100-400’s long reach. I’ve never owned the 100-300, so can’t tell you anything on how the two compare. The only big downside to the 100-400 is, as I mentioned in the video, the zoom ring, but from what I’ve heard it also varies with the particular copy you have.
      Most of the time I shoot in 10bit 422 on my G9. If you want a lot of flexibility in post and/or you display your videos on high-end bigger screens, it is definitely worth it. I’m using a mac mini (M1) with DaVinci Resolve and either use the H264 files from the G9 (plays fine on my mac) or I record externally in ProRes (which is smoother to work with).
      From what you’ve said, I’m presuming you’re a Windows user? In that case, yeah, converting to ProRes is an option. Or the paid version of DaVinci Resolve. Of course, it also depends on you computer’s specs.
      Tomorrow I am releasing a new video on shooting in V-logL in 4K 10-bit 422. It will be part 1 of a 3 part series on that topic. Might be interesting to you 🙂

    Interesting video, thanks. The autofocus performance in the bush/field shot was really smooth, no snapping, just a clean but fast focussing.
    Do you have any experience with the Panny 100-300, or have any plans to compare these two lenses in future?

    • @RedFrameTech

      Maybe I will compare it to the 100-300 in the future. I don’t have at the moment, but I think I will.

      I have the 100-300mm and borrowed a friend's 100-400mm. I discovered that the G9 100-300mm can be a the "poorman's" 100-400mm for photos by turning Extended Teleconverter function on for Photos and setting image size to medium. The added 1.4x gives turns 100-300mm to a 140-420mm for jpg. My comparison with the 100-400mm was very favorable for apparent sharpness at comparable focal lengths. The Extended Teleconverter crops the center of the image in camera. I think the softer edges get cropped leaving the sharper center. If you shoot with the Extended Teleconverter, I recommend shooting jpg/raw. The raw image is uncropped. Try this before investing in the 100-400mm.

      @ericaceous1652 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lumixographer2185 Thanks for the intel, I've been using the extended teleconverter in video, but haven't found the setting to turn it on for photos yet - though perhaps where I've been going wrong, if I understand your comment correctly, is that I haven't reduced the image size in settings from L to M?

    • @lumixographer2185
      @lumixographer2185 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ericaceous1652 Yes! You have to turn on ex teleconverter for photos, then switch image size from Large to Medium for 1.4x or Small for 2x. If you shoot 4K photos with ex tele on for photos, you get a 1.6x increase. Generally I keep ex teleconverter on for photos all the time. Then I only have to change image size for 1.4x or 2x. By the way, I'm doing my 100-300mm vs 100-400mm comparison now. Should be interesting to see if the 100-300mm with Extended Teleconverter at 1.4x is a good as the 100-400mm.

    Good review. Did you test with a variable ND filter? When shooting with my set up and using a ND filter, over 200mm the image quality gets really soft. I'm not using a top of the line filter, but on my other smaller mm lenses it works fine. Wondering if you had a similar experience.

    I've had my 100-400mm lens since 2017 and its been on my GH4, GH5 and now GH6.
    I have to admit that putting the same lens onto my GH6 was like buying a brand new lens with added pazaz to go with my brand new camera. For me, it was just visually stunning in every way either filming or shooting hand-held at 400mm. Basically Panasonic cameras rock at Image Stabilisation but when filming they are pants when it comes to focusing. This is in complete contrast when taking photos with the GH6 and the 100-400mm lens. With this combination photographing moving subjects I can get an 80% to 90% success rate with images in focus.
    When I had the same lens pared with my GH5, I was lucky to walk away with 1% of my images sharp from fast moving subjects.

      @RedFrameTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve had the same experience with the 100-400 on the GH6. The footage just looks stunning.
      Focusing, not sure yet. I’ve been using the lens on the G9. Also pretty good. I have to test the GH6’s autofocus more, since I’ve been mostly manually focussing.
      Haven’t really tried the photo side yet.
      Stabe is amazing though, but yeah, Panasonic video auto focus in general; meh..

      @@RedFrameTech May I ask if you have done any Astro photography with your G9 and GH6?
      From time to time I attempt the occasional Milky Way with my GH6 and I have found that the noise and hot pixels are shockingly awful.The images need a lot of post editing to fix this problem. At the moment I am experimenting with Topaz deNoise and DxO Photolabs for my photos. Topaz works better on dark images and DxO can look better on daytime images but you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference as they are both really good at killing noise.
      A couple of days ago I had a dabble with the High Dynamic Range Boost filming a Firework Display. I was really really impressed with how well the GH6 handled the dark background against the bright explosions. Using Resolve’s Noise Reduction was the icing on the cake.
      I’d be honoured if you took a look at my Firework Display. It was shot with my Panasonic 12mm f1.4 lens. This lens is stupidly expensive but probably my sharpest and favourite lens. It is far sharper than my 12-35mm f2.8 and that is a great lens.

    • @frankinblackpool
      @frankinblackpool 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Forgot to mention, I find that I can trust the auto focus on the GH6 more than the GH5 but I still use manual focus for dark subjects or stationary subjects to avoid camera hunting spoiling the shot.

    • @RedFrameTech
      @RedFrameTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@frankinblackpool I don’t do astro really, so can’t comment on that.
      But I did watch your fire works video. It looks stunning! And I had a similar experience at a wedding I shot. There were fire works and and bright coloured lights and the results were incredible. DR boost on with the PL 12-60.
      Resolve’s noise reduction indeed works really well

    • @frankinblackpool
      @frankinblackpool 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RedFrameTech That is really kind of you to watch my fireworks.😀
      As for Dynamic Range Boost, I tried it when I first got my camera but got frightened at the high ISO and having to use a ND filter even indoors so I gave up. Then I researched more about this feature and how it works blending two ISO settings to get a hybrid result. Basically this feature is the Poor Man’s Arri Alexa and I’m really happy with that 😀
      I’ve also just bought an external SSD and I’m looking forward to using that rather than the expensive CF Express cards.
      I don’t think I will experiment with ProRes raw because I’ve read that it’s not supported by Resolve and the ProRes HQ results are supposed to be practically the same

    Leica 100-400 is the worst lens I have ever owned. Tried three copies. Very low percentage of "keepers". Autofocus failures mostly. The zoom isn't just stiff, it's ridiculous imo. The Olympus 100-400 works much better for me. th-cam.com/video/0iYI_yAFEok/w-d-xo.html

      The copy in your video seems particularly stiff.. mine is not that bad.
      I vey much enjoy the image quality and color rendition of the lens. And the dual IS is great.
      I’m not really concerned with ‘keepers’ as I mostly do video and manual focus.
      But I can imagine if you’re doing a lot of BIF photography, it may not be the right lens. Or even the right system all together.
