“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a star. In somebody else’s sky, but why, why, whyyyy can’t it be, can’t it be mine?” Tells the story. That’s why he seems so broken. It’s a hauntingly beautiful song.

At 3:55 when you asked "Why does he look so...BROKEN" you described it perfectly. Eddie Vedder wrote BLACK after going through a bad breakup and he really was broken for a while. There were times he was unable to finish singing that song becaue he was overcome with emotion.

    • @saltedllama2759
      @saltedllama2759 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

The breakup happened when he was 16 and he wrote this song a decade later. He also happened to be a professionally trained singer. Bad or not, no one carries a high school breakup that long, after writing it, editing it, rehearsing it, recording and producing it, then performing it hundreds of times before this appearance on MTV. Also, making another individual one's universe is incredibly romantic, but also incredibly unhealthy (for both parties involved). I promise you, Eddie was 100% over it and desensitized to the breakup. But he is an artist who's confidence had grown considerably by this point, so he leans into the emotion of the song, or else the performance falls flat. These performers have to be just that: performers. Don't buy into the idea that they were all regular Joe's who had a bad life experience, and the emotion suddenly grants them the ability to sing and play instruments at a level that impresses the top vocal coaches and orchestra conductors in the world. There's a time when we all have to stop believing in Santa Claus...

@@saltedllama2759 I don't so much agree , well just not so much. This song is special to me when I was 18 and now I'm 42 , not gonna detail. I don't think of why it's so special every single time I hear this but sometimes I do. So you talk about 10 years later and here I am 24 years later and yes this song can hit me. So what if I wrote a song 24 years later about the experience I felt then and now. It'd still be emotional because when I write it , it really brings me back to that day , that's my words , my feelings , my thoughts. So I can't go along with he's just a "performer" thing , did he up it for this , yeah most likely but the song probably hits him hard as hell either way , you can be fine with that writing one day and the next day not , that's not being a "performer" that's being a human being. Or maybe I'm just fucked in the head , I don't know you decide about my comment. I know where I stand I get your thoughts about but just saying it is unlikely to the human condition , of well , being human.

You have really been getting some Excellent recommendations lately. You did Cornell and Vedder, now you have to do their band together, Temple Of The Dog. Magnificent! Thanks for reacting to this, one of my favorite songs of all time! The harmonies towards the end of the song are backing vocals being sung by Jeff Ament, the bassist, and Stone Gossard, the rhythm guitarist. They were the founding members of Pearl Jam after playing in bands together for several years, and wrote most of the songs on Pearl Jam's first album "Ten", which I highly recommend. 😊

I highly recommend Jeremy (uncensored version) by these guys, it's definitely available on YT, and is harrowing. Bring tissues if you watch that one. I'd also suggest Foo Fighters, Pretender. More raucous than this but universally relevant and an absolute masterpiece of a video. Much love from UK.

Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay were laid spread out before me as her body once did. All five horizons revolved around her soul, as the earth to the sun. Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn. And all I taught her was everything, I know she gave me all that she wore. And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds of what was everything, all the pictures have all been washed in black...tattooed everything.
I take a walk outside, I'm surrounded by some kids at play. I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear?
And twisted thoughts that spin around my head, oh I'm spinning. How quick the sun can drop away.
And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass of what was everything, all the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything. All the love gone bad turned my world to black, tattooed all I see, all that I am, all that I'll be..
I know some day you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but why?! Why?! Whyyy can't it be mine?

Hello, pretty lady. I always have trouble hearing your voice in your videos. Is there any way you can turn your mic volume up in the mix?

    Love all your vids!
Just a suggestion. Altho live performances are great .. for reviews its better to watch the recorded version as that is the intended way the band wanted their tune portrayed!
You'll get a much more accurate reading of the song and how its supposed to sound.

not true. this is the best version of “black” ever. besides, even the band said “Ten” was horribly recorded

Let me be brutally honest here: in my opinion MTV was cashing in on a hype here. There is not one single one of these unplugged concerts that I prefer over the original versions. Not Pearl Jam, not Nirvana, not Queensrÿche.
This particular song suffers, too. The subtle guitar wailing in the background, the lack of needing to fill certain phrases by sustaining vocal notes, it's missing. The original, 'bad production' (intentional. Grunge, you know) be damned, to me was far superior.
I think one should distinguish between live and acoustic live. Live is fine to me. I mean 'Pisces' and 'Ghost Love Score' (probably the most reacted to songs on YT) are both live and genius.

The Album 10 flows so good and doesn't have a bad song. Not many like that except any from Tool.
