I see that this video was posted back about eight months ago, but I thought I'd chime in, as there doesn't seem to be any resolution... I honestly don't really see that there's anything wrong with your machine. I have logged more than 1,000 hours with my Vaquero, and it was my go-to machine for quite some time. It is the deepest machine I've ever run, but it needs to be set up properly in order to maximize its depth capabilities. Please do not think that I'm writing this to criticize in any way... I just felt like I could possibly educate a little bit.
First of all, the Vaquero is a very sensitive detector, and I would absolutely expect a little bit of loss of depth in setting up your test in this environment. I've had my depth cut in half by electrical lines, underground utilities, invisible dog fences and the like. That, unfortunately, is par for the course. There are workarounds, but it can be a challenge, as with any detector. Even so, six inches is fair for an air test with the settings you have employed.
The biggest issue here is that the Vaquero is an incredibly deep machine, but not when the sensitivity is set to eight. Running this machine at eight is kind of like using a dump truck to haul a wood splitter - it's capable of so much more! If you are looking for depth, the machine should be run just below where it starts breaking up... that would be at about where 12 would be on the sensitivity knob. I don't know much about the Micromax, but I personally would never run my Vaq at eight, and can think of very few reasons why one would. It is still the detector I pull out when I am looking for depth, and so why would I limit the machine unnecessarily by not opening it right up?
The other major component in getting the most depth is ground balancing. This has nothing to do with your air test, of course, but is the difference between hitting a coin a eight inches and hitting a coin at 12"+ (which I have done). An excellent video to watch is scannerguy1968's video titled, "How to hit 12 inch deep quarters with a Tesoro Vaquero Metal Detector." The one thing I would say about his video is that he would get even more depth if he turned his discrimination town to below nickel.
Anyways, I hope this helps someone, and I hope you got your issues with the Vaq figured out... Happy hunting!

I have a Vaquero and 90% of the time I run it super tuned. Try the air test again but this time with your threshold turned all the way up and discrimination turned all the way up until you hear noise and then just back it down a little until its stable and see how much more depth you get. I love my machine. 4th Tesoro I have owned.

This is a nice video, I personally use the Vaquero quite a bit (you can see many of these hunts on my vids). I duplicated your test using my Vaquero and I did get a bit more depth out of my air test than you got. Depending on the speed I was waving the penny and the angle of it, I could get a decent enough tone on it closer to 6 inches. On the vaq, discrimination seems to have a very significant impact on depth. Nickles at 5 inches or deeper will be gone if you have the disc knob set to nickle. I suggest you try the airtest with an audible threshold and you sill see what the discrimination does to the depth.

Brother you need to tune your vaquero to a little negative on gb and turn your sensitivity up . They will smack quarters at 13”+

Don't test the detector if you have no idea how to use it.

Common sense, first (turn on) the machine and then..... ground balance...:)

People say they are all the same but I don't believe it. I've owned 5 different Vaq's and 3 Tejons and I know that some are hotter than others. I sent a Tiger shark in for coil replacement. I was replacing an 8" coil with the 10.5" coil per their recommendation for more depth. When I got the machine back it got less depth than the 8" coil. I have a love hate relationship with Tesoros. My favorite has probably been the little silver micro max with the 3x18 cleansweep coil for coinshooting. .

I saw a machine just like yours bust a 1 grain gold bar at 4" in air test on youtube yesterday. I'm thinking your very close to entering the vaquero detention. journey on my friend. the video was untitled
Vaquero verses Tejon metal detector test.

Well if you ground balance the unit put a penny in the ground and do a real test on it you might have a different outcome i know this video is old now but if people did a test in the real environment that your detecting in your results would be accurate

You cant air test and expect it to perform as good as in the field. Also it very close on your bench to the other Tesoro. I have one and also the Outlaw. You have to put many hours of hunting to get familiar with your Vaquero. Its a deep machine and works excellent! My Outlaw I like better for coins and jewelry hunting with its excellent pinpointing and I feel the disc is a little better defined. My Vaquero is always ready to coin and relic hunt, I use it for older sights when I need extra depth in like old farms that have disappeared now and maybe crops have been introduced. Not to make you mad but you sound and are still a novice with your detector. I run the stock 8x9 concentric on both detectors more then the new 8x11 dd coils I have for both of them. Depends on what your hunting but I love the Tesoro family and think their right with the best of MD's. Don't send it back, make a test bed on a string in your house with 10 objects from iron nail all the way up to half dollar. Better yet do a test bed outside and see how it performs. You need to put some time in it and I mean many hours to get it down. I have found just year so far over 20 silver coins in just 1 month after the frost left the ground. I'm a cherry picker usually run it just above zinc on Disc on both machines. Again have patience and get to understand and get dirty and remember what the tone sounds like and keep your right thumb the on the Disc knob when you hit a target and rotate it each way and you will get good. Your reading to many opinions and cutting corners on learning. Go get dirty sir! No short cuts to getting the honeymoon over.

You can not use uMax coil with new Vanquero, because Tesoro changes inductances of these new. New Vanquero and Tejon has completely different oscilator than older ones.Ground Ballance (as Thomas Nashe) wrote is the secret.Throw away the manual, take small piece of ferrite core (it must be rod or half donut - break donuit into two pieces or get ferrite rod from old radio) and swing it in front of coil. Turn ground ballance (from the total left) until this rod will be rejected. Mark this position on panel and test little angles to the right and left outside. Do this outside! You will be amazed how deeper Vanquero is compared to uMax!!! You just have ground ballance too high. Less Ground ballance, deeper you go (there is limit where you will pick hot rocks and mineralisation...) You will handle this after few weeks, but then you will love this machine and throw uMax to trash.

I agree machine should be on first before adjusting ground balance, sorry. Adjust threshold first while its on then ground balance while still on. Also some vids they have sens maxed as far as they can. nope not same. threshold slight hum also.

Tesoro Silver umax makes automatic Ground Balance !
If you do to Tesoro Vaquero Ground Balance incorrect
    You lose sensitivity
Go in the garden and makes a correct Ground Balance
And makes again test ! Good Luck & HH.

Vaquero is gone... but I still have the silver Umaxx and that is one I will never get rid of. I have since gone over to a minelab safari..... and absolutely love it.
I guess.... you don't pick the detector, the detector picks you.

My vaquero was as deep as my safari in every ground except wet salt sand.. overthere the Vaquero and any vlf machine is pretty useless. The vaq needs more sensitivity to shine .. my vaq when the sense on 6 for example sounds of as a plastic spoon on a coin but with sense just in the redzone i gained inches like really .
Also no tesoro is the same out of the factory they all are different even when having 3 vaq,s or 3 silver u max,s.
You need to dial in every single unit .
But no doubt , a vaquero that is not defect is a plenty deep machine , and very very sensitive to small stuff

Send it back. It could have a defect. I read where it is possible to get one that is not a hot machine. Just send it back it has a lifetime warranty.

Watch Scanner guy 1968 and he will show you how to Super Tune it. Plus this is an 8 year old so you should have learned how to get 10 to 12 inches. Don't care what the manual says. Ground balance it outside bring it inside and and air test it supertuned

Hopefully you have learned that air tests are not a good way to measure a detector.

  • @tommytitmouse

Whats puzzling me is ,WHY would you put discrimination on in an Air test ? Leave it at Zero as you have no need what so ever to stick discrimination on,in a test ,as your not having to discrim anything out.
