  • A new video launching on World Pulses Day (10 February 2024) aims to elevate the humble bean to the star of easy-to-cook, planet-friendly meals. The video, BeanMeals@Home from the BeanMeals team, based in the Food Systems Transformation Group, at the Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford, tracks community-based research to trial new varieties of UK-grown haricot beans.
In the film, a group of home cooks, from those with cultural connections to pulses as well as families who have never previously cooked with dried beans, create tasty and affordable family meals.
BeanMeals draws together researchers from five UK institutions who are using two types of bean, developed at the University of Warwick to grow in the UK, to try and unlock new pathways towards healthy, affordable and sustainable diets. The research aims to identify opportunities for innovation in the food system to move our diets away from processed foods that are high in fat, sugar and salt. Highly water efficient, pulses also have nitrogen-fixing properties that can improve soil fertility.
