    They WON'T always be gone. Our (very welcomed and enjoyed) family of rabbits have had quite a few generations in our backyard. I love seeing them.

    This is why one should always be careful and check their property before running a lawnmower. Check for sticks, dog bombs, and supposedly "dead" patches of grass that could be a rabbit's nest.

    A great video with very timely and appropriate advice. I wish that I had known this when I found a nest in my own back yard. I never want to harm an animal.

  • @twobad_yt
    @twobad_yt ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Great advice. I'd like to add to be aware that picking up, lifting, moving a cottontail rabbit, can cause a serious harm to the animal including death. Most people are aware that rabbits can get a heart attack from the smallest amount of stress, getting spooked, scared etc INCLUDING moving them or lifting them up. even if an encounter doesn't cause a heart failure, a cottontail rabbit may go into the state of shock, which may cause it dying from starvation, as all the life critical functions shut down, which includes it's digestive system etc. Rabbit may stay in such state for over a week, which often lead to the death of the animal. Just be gentle with them, and remember that we are petrifying giants to them... Thank you for spreading such an important educational info OP.

    I’m so excited I’m 90% I have a nest from my wild friend Bunions- he, well she, started coming to my kitchen window LAST summer to get snacks and re-showed up this year, I was psyched to see her again this past May!!! Two nights ago I saw this what I thought was odd behavior but I now definitely know she was building a nest! Haven’t had the nerve to look yet because she just built it two nights ago. I am eagerly waiting!!!!! Sooo damn off the charts cute they are 🐰🥰

    Serious questions here. I have mowed and have take care of a 2 square mile plot of land for a local business for a few years now. We have an agreement that I mow every two weeks between the months of June thru October. In other words this is not my land. Last year while mowing I found a rabbits nest as when my mower got close they scattered. Of course the minute I saw them I stopped the mower. They were not much bigger then the bunnies shown here but they were able to move on there own. That said they were frozen in fear. With gloves I was able to pick them up and move them to some brush I intentionally leave untrimmed so they had a place to hide. The good news is I save three of them this way. The bad news is I did not see the 4th one until it was to late. Rule #2 when I mow if I hit a bunny the mowing stops for the day.
    So this year I began mowing and in the process ran across 2 bunny nests. They are new as they were not there last week when I did my walk through. These bunnies are not moveable but the lawn must be mowed. What is the ethical thing to do here? Mow around them and risk hitting a nest I cant see? Refuse to mow the area and have someone less concerned about them run over them? Use a weedwacker and try to get as close as I can and try to hide there nests from the land owner? I know they are considered vermin where I live but I was raised with a respect of nature so I am asking for real suggestions... please.

    The video should’ve included how to do the string test. When you first find the nest if you’re not sure that mom is around do the string test. Place pieces of string or very thin twigs over the nest forming an X or a tic-tac-toe board. Check back after the next expected feeding. And if the strings/twigs have been disturbed that means mom was back feeding them.
    It’s also very important to make sure the nest is kept safe from children dogs and especially cats.

    My Collie found a rabbit nest in the flower bed, right by my back door ! It has a 'hair' roof over it - more like what domestic rabbits make. He found it a couple of days ago and it was empty, but seems to be moving, so I'm assuming there are babies in it, now. I got busy, and fenced off the flower bed with that high, wire type, flower bed fencing, so he can't put his long, Collie nose into their 'business' ! :)

I guess, I'll just set the blade up a little higher and hope for the best. I love to practice ''mindfulness'' while doing chores, so I'll be doing ''mindfulness of mowing grass AND looking for aby rabbit nests!''.

    Tip: if you think it may be abandoned, take some yarn and mke an "x" with it over the nest before dawn (mom usually comes back after dawn) and if its scattered, mom has returned, if it remains, then its abandoned. If it remains, give it at least one more day. Mom could be caught up in hiding from a predator etc.
    Also if you can, make some shelter over the nest. Ive seen hawks take them straight from under the fur/grass. I put my fireplace over in my backyard

Tonight though, I heard one screeching like that one did and alas, the nest was disturbed, probably by my neighbors cat. 🤬 Wasn’t sure how to know how old they are, but they were about the size of the ones in video, could hop, and scurry off quickly.

    Does anyone know how long rabbits stay near the nest?? So my Siberian Husky found a rabbit nest in my yard and I kept it safe from my huskies, I used a leash with them etc. I let the nest be. Within 5 days of my dog finding the nest, it was empty. They were a fair size, had eyes open etc so I knew they were getting ready to leave nothing unexpected. Well it's been a week, and I thought we had a mouse living in our yard behind a garbage bin but tonight I realized it's a baby bunny! During the afternoon I had a husky outside on leash, and this baby bunny was just sitting in the grass eating away. And then tonight I went out with my husky off leash, within 2 seconds she found the bunny and chased it behind the bin. THANKFULLY she didn't bite it or hurt it. Like it's eating on it's own fine, and it's not at the nest anymore but it doesn't seem willingly to leave my backyard....... is that normal? We do have a lot of crows and coyotes around, so I think rabbits find my yard "safe", but with 2 Siberian Huskies which have prey drive - I can't ever give my dogs freedom to run and play in my yard :(

    • @dubistverrueckt
      @dubistverrueckt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's right: you can't because otherwise the rabbits would suffer a horrible excruciatingly painful death. I, too, was about to adopt a dog - a husky, no less. But after watching video after video and reading comment after comment of how "my dog found a bunny nest and injured/killed some/all the babies" some showing the dying newborn rabbits with their faces bitten off LITERALLY, I'll NEVER get another dog again in my life (or cat, just as deadly, maybe worse).
