Thanks for all the positive feedback! I greatly appreciate it! This was a fun build and I'm sure that I'll be making more of these flags to give away as gifts in the future. I've already had quite a few folks e-mailing me or DMing me on Instagram asking for the plans. I've gone ahead and put the links to the SketchUp file I created in the video description. If you don't have SketchUp, you'll find links to a PDF or 2D printable pictures of the template with all the necessary dimensions for you to recreate what I've done. So check the video description for the links! Have fun and thanks again!
Thanks for sharing. Sub'd a while back, but haven't had the chance to watch all your content. This came out f-in awesome and I love your commentary. I've been wondering how to go about making the wave and appreciate you sharing your plans. Take care
Drew I bought the plans for the flag because I had not seen the waving flag before only flat ones. I made one for my son inlaw as a Christmas gift. Since giving it to him I have orders for 5 more which of corse I am selling. I haven't had the chance to finish mine yet. I plan on using a mahogany or another red wood for a unburned version painting the union blue and filling the cut out stars white. Again thank you for the video and plans as these are fun to make.
This is a terrific video. I love your dry humor, which had me laughing throughout. This is clearly a time consuming project. I have to imagine it took at least 20 hours to complete, including computer time, and more likely closer to 30. Excellent work!
Drew, I just found this video. It is a great project. I was really impressed by how much Shop Buddy 1 has grown (in stature and in nerdiness) since this video.
Thank you for the plans I do woodworking on the side and it helps sometimes to be able to work off a set of plans. Everyone is so protective about how they do stuff anymore
Great job Drew. Something i did to help rotate the flag was to build a lazy susan base out of some scrap plywood bout 16" x 16" and a lazy susan about 12" x 12". Works very well for a number of projects I've done. Good luck and great woodworking sir.
You have a great narrating voice - it reminds me of Richard Dreyfuss narrating Stand By Me. The project was great and well executed. Thanks for taking the time to show us your planning and woodworking techniques!
Absolutely amazing. Being a veteran, I applaud you for taking the time to do the flag justice, right down to the stars. This is something I would purchase. Also a project I might try for myself and my brother who is also a veteran. Again thank you.
Outstanding! I only wish I was 1/2 as talented with wood as you are...from a marine who fight's still, uttering these words "These Colors, Don't Run"...1000 thumbs up!
Great video. I just finished my own flag. The only thing I did different was that I put 1" star stickers on then painted. Afterwards I just pulled the stickers off and had perfect stars. I couldn't talk myself into doing each one by hand. Love your videos, keep up the great work.
Great job. You are very persistent. With a few flails, you never gave up. I've been thinking about painting a flowing flag like that to put on my barn. Again, good job.
Drew! I haven’t laugh like that for a while!! Your comments about the accuracy and the Xanax were hilarious. This video is a 10 out of ten!! Well done!
Most excellent!! I made a wood flag for my den years ago and used pieces of #1 clear white pine and red cedar for the stripes and the white pine for the union got painted royal blue using oil based paint after 2 coats of white primer. I bought the 50 wooden pre cut stars on line, painted them white, again using oil based primer and paint and glued them in place on the union. I did buy the appropriate size stars to save a lot of effort and made the stripes match the size I needed. Everything was glued to a piece of 3/8” plywood. Some wipe on water based poly (6 coats) and French cleats for the back for hanging finished the project. I like your idea of making it appear waving so I’ll go through it all over and give it to my nephew who is retired army. I’m retired navy (25 years) so his service means a lot to me.
I feel like I’ve come to expect a CNC video every time I see the flag with stars. Not to discount those videos, but this is much more impressive IMO. Nice work👍🏼
I've made and sold about 20 of these, what I eventually did was splitting each 2x4 in half and free styling the waves just clamped NOT glued then painted each stripe individually and union where it belonged then glued together making sure everything was aligned, saved alot of tape and thermal tape if I chose to burn it...so it also saved many hours of time. After hand carving what seemed to be 1000 stars I really appreciate the work put in. Thanks for coming up with this idea, many people find it amazing ...thanks again keep up the good work ..
Well done Drew! I like your solution for saving material and getting a second one as a result. It would have taken far less brain power (something important to me!) to just glue up a full butcher block, then carve down to make the ripples.
Originally that was my plan. But once I started thinking about it, I feared that I wouldn't be consistent and in the end it would look like a wrinkly mess instead of having nice pretty waves. So I started playing around with it in Sketchup and that's when it occurred to me that I could get 2 flags out of one. :) Thanks, Mark!
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸It turned out very well! I’ve always wanted to make a ‘waving’ flag out of wood, so I really appreciate the tutorial. I think the only thing I’ll do differently is paint the field dark blue, instead of black. And I might skip the wood burning on one and go with all paint, since I have two chances to get things right. On the other hand, perhaps I’ll make a cutting board for my mother-in-law! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Since I knew I'd be burning the "red" stripes, I didn't want to introduce color to the union. But if I wanted to paint the stripes, then I wouldn't have had to use the foil tape and probably would have saved some time. I sure do like the burned look though. Thanks for watching.
@@FishersShop Speaking of foil tape.....do you know which model number of 3m tape you used? I tried some cheap foil tape i had on a test piece....and yea....it didn't work very well! Guessing i just need the high temperature tape.

Looks great the market is flooded with the flat wood flags I never get sick of seeing them. I was looking for a new way to make these to sell. Think I found it. Thanks for the vid
Perhaps once you have the boards cut individually you can then sand them then stain/burn each one prior to glue up. This way you avoid having to tape off.
I tried that in a previous attempt but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get them to line up perfectly during the glue-up. Doing it the way I did assures for a perfectly smooth surface. It's long and tedious, but it's worth it in my opinion.
I’d love to see a Canadian Flag as I wood make one, it could be done using Shou sugi ban wood burning & red dye. I think that would look amazing. Keep up the great work I enjoy all your projects and get a great laugh watching each one. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Beautiful job well done you made me laugh with the Xanax you said a couple of bottles I think a couple of cases. 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂 . God bless you family and friends.
I have now made 4 of these flags. I've sold 2 and donated 2 to local veteran organizations for auctions. They were quite the hit !! On the last one I made I cheated a bit. Instead of carving or painting the stars, I used outdoor vinyl. I drew them in a cad program for the vinyl cutter and cut out enough stars for 7 more flags !! It was very nice and very quick to just peel and press the stars into place. Once the poly is applied they stay in place.
Awesome job! This looks fantastic! A little advanced for me and my patience but maybe some day. Love the outtakes at the end. Makes me realize messing up is just a good way to learn. I learn a lot.
I think the flag turned out spectacular. and about the taping, what I have seen most others do is burn the wood before glue up, but if you make sure to mark the pieces so as to know which order place them after

The best part of this project was that almost every part of was a new skill for me, operating a band saw, angle grinder, torch and applying urethane.
