Lack of cloth physics is a huge turn off, my favorite coats look ridiculous now, just plastered to a character. Models seem to spaz out too, especially Vito when his head is trying to stay turned towards something/someone interactable. And for some reason draw distance seems to be reduced.
2K doesn’t deserve to have such a game. The “definitive” edition is horrendous. I was expecting a Saints Row The Third Remastered type of thing with all the cut content. But no, 2K had to do the lazy route

Shame, the clothing in this game was a highlight to it's presentation.. Pity they cut it rather than optimizing it... The way women's dresses flopped around realistically, rather than being linked to their legs like some crazy Jnco jeans with an impossibly flexable panel in the middle, like dresses in most games was always a plus. NPC Women's dresses in games STILL don't look as good as they did in Mafia II with Physx. Even today.

I really hoped that they will add some cut content. I know it will sound strange, but in the first game, it was so good to travel around the city by tram or metro. And there is proof, that originally it was meant to be the case in mafia 2 as well. They cut subway and bus from the game. And this is just the smallest thing of many. I just don't get the reason for this remaster (except from making money). It's just tiny graphical update and that's it. Don't get me wrong. This game is one of my favorite, and that's why I'm upset. So many people wanted the cut content or at least some cut content to be added but without it, it's pointless.
Mafia 2 is one of my all time favorites too, but I'd definitely argue that GTA4 has way more attention to detail than Mafia 2. GTA's world feels alive, with people chatting, doing ordinary everyday things etc. Where as Mafia 2's world feels static. Nothing really happens, and there's really nothing to do. The world is big and beautiful but sadly static and lacking in content. Now, I don't personally care about that and it doesn't diminish the enjoyment I get out of playing it, but it most definitely doesn't have more 'attention to detail' than GTA.

There were reasons for many complaints back then. It was released unfinished, simplified, cut down version with bad DLCs in the package. Those lazy dev-s haven't included even couple of mini race games or just ONE single interesting side mission ! This is a happy surprise! I love this game! I almost replayed it on 360 a few months. Tried telling my friends about this amazing game. It was so slept on!
I forgot about those cars that were in the garage for PS3's _Mafia II: Director's Cut_ that were not in the Definitive Edition. The Vegas outfit DLCs are also not in it. I wonder where I can find those cars, as they exist in-game still. Also, I had no clue about the crime scene thing! By the way, you don't need firearms to rob a place. Just shoving the person by the register allows you to rob it, although firearms would be recommended if the person has a gun.
This video was very helpful because I didn't noticed much difference. I played the original on Xbox 360 back in 2011 in fact, I still have the disc but it's scratched up which cause glitches in the game that prevents me from progressing. I also played the PC version with free ride. I never played Mafia and I played the Xbox/PC versions of Mafia 3. It's great that they announced this shortly after it crossed my mind. I will grab a copy of the trilogy one day.
I have also noticed DLC cars not showing up, though the two hot rod cars that you made note of did show up for me after I completed the mission involving the greasers. I have also noticed some people posting pictures who already have the Mafia 1 taxi in mafia 2 but I don't.
Its the smallest details that make the difference between an immersive experience & static one. Those few extra lines of dialogue make world believable. Metro also does this brilliantly. Some side conversations last 15 mins if wait around lol
I'm going to be getting Mafia 2 Definitive Edition as part of the Mafia Trilogy physical copy when it releases on August 28th this year primarily to play this and the Mafia 1 remake which I'm very much looking forward to, hopefully by that time Mafia 2 Definitive Edition gets a patch that addresses some of the issues with this glitchy remaster as well as Mafia 3 Definitive Edition. I'm currently playing Mafia 2 original on Xbox One backwards compat and having an absolute blast considering i have the classics edition with the free dlc. 👍
The Ending is still with me, I swear i have not played /seen the ending of this game for past 5 years, but i still remember the car ride at the end. By the way good content Biscuit
I know it would never happen, but I think it would be cool of they took the best elements from each game (graphics, lighting, AI, other game elements, etc.) and remade each game to the best possible version.
I was so hyped when i hesred Mafia 2 will be rereleased but im disapointed to no end with this. Ist barely looks different to the Original release. But non the less i still love mafia 2 one of the best games ever, but they could really have done more. I hope the Mafia rework will be better.
I agree too. Mafia 2 is better only in graphics, but everything else was more like a disappointment after the almost perfect Mafia 1 (which has much more content). It's a shame publisher pushed 2K Czech for early release so they had to cut so much content.
I was about 13 the first time I encountered this game. The game was fascinating for me but i had forgot about it since the remastered buzz started. It has been such a nostalgia trip.
I love the fact someone else thinks Mafia 2 is amazing. And that ending! [MILD SPOILERS AHEAD] The ending which is commented on in Mafia III post-game further, giving a form of closure. I think, especially of its time, the fact that Mafia 2's era completely changed in the middle of the game was amazing. That's not just a layer of snow they removed, but completely different cars and outfits and just, it was brilliant.
Can anyone explain why some footage of the game has clothing physics but some doesn't? I thought maybe the console versions didn't have it but I saw someone playing the dlc on PS4 and there was clothing physics.
Parallel Lines had the best police/wanted system I think...this game was good but not as deep (Although I do like the crime scene stuff.) In Parallel Lines you have two wanted levels, one for the car and one for you. If they see your car they go after it, respraying or losing the cops gets rid of your tail, pretty standard. Now you can get a new car cop free. HOWEVER, the cops are still looking for you, so if you don't ditch the car and drive near a police car you get a suspicion meter and if it fills they figure out it's you. The higher the wanted level the quicker it fills, if your wanted is full the suspicion meter is always full and they go for you again. Now, on foot. If they see you leave the car or commit a crime on foot they know what you look like, so if you lose them and get a new car, you get the suspicion meter on your new car as they are now scanning all cars. You can't change the clothes you wear to get rid of them either so the cops are on your ass the whole time, keeps you on your feet. Driving a convertible acts as being on foot. I recall this from memory so some details might be wrong, but the cops don't just give up when you go round a corner like in other games. Even if you lose them, they'll be on the hunt.
9:07 The ground is also different. No clue why they would change that. I like the original cobblestone more, but perhaps it wasn't as New York style as the remaster sidewalk and that's why they changed it.
How come I can’t access all the army, Vegas pack stuff from the get go? I remember being able to use all the dlc from the start on my Xbox 360. But on my Xbox one I just have vito’s regular clothes and Lincoln’s outfit
just wanted to chime in on the missing cars you mentioned they unlock as you progresss through the story and you get access to all of them on your 2nd playthrough (if you do such a thing) i got confused by this too so dug deeper to find out cause mafia 2 is my favourite game of all time
I've never played this second installment, so I will buy this just based on your recommendation - but, my question is: I've only played the first Mafia when it came out(is is one of my greatest game of all time), do you recommend to buy the trilogy pack or just the second game and the first remake when it comes out? How is the third game in your opinion? I know lots of hate goes around it, but people also seems to hate lot of things I love, so could not care less about general opinion, but your opinion is important to me.
Aah the memories with mafia 2. I spent alot of time just kicking that diner door open over and over again lol. Every few years just have to replay it. I love the car handling especially in the winter. This free upgrade will have to fulfill the time of waiting for the mafia 1 remake. Mafia 1 remake will be a long time dream come thru. Always hoped for it. The little things in mafia 1 were what made it great. Like you had to go thru a window from a room to catch someone. Back then i dont remember any other game do it. Also removing the block from the train cart to roll into the hanger was something gta never did. Cant wait to get back to lost heavens countryside that was the best place to drive around in. It still looks great.
13:50 Why didn't you have PhysX in the original Mafia 2 when doing the comparison with the benchmark? You would have seen a massive difference with the clothing and destruction.
This NPC with changed face and newly visible nametag now looks like a concept artist and character modeler that used to work for 2K Czech. His name also matches George (Jiri) Svetinsky.
I might be wrong, but I believe some of the devs from Kingdom Come also worked on Mafia 2 and Mafia 1. If you look closely at the running animations, they look kind of similar to the running animations in Kingdom Come. 12:51

Its hilarious. Right when you get back and during the mission to walk to your mother's house, theres two guys yelling up at second story window. They're trying to convince their friend's wife to let him come to the bar with them and shes just not having any of it.
Can you please tell me how you got Friends for life to work on the Definitive Edition? I have been trying for days now and can’t figure it out😅. Thanks anyways and love the videos!

I got Mafia 2 and RDR 1 for my 21st birthday back in 2011
I have also noticed DLC cars not showing up, though the two hot rod cars that you made note of did show up for me after I completed the mission involving the greasers.
this brings back memories from playing in winter, all through midnight irl. as well as playing the 'enemy of the state' level.
My question is were are all the dlc outfits like the mad man pack or the war hero stuff
They're already releasing the Mafi 2 & 3 Definitive editions as updates on Steam.
Nice vid. Oh, and please send my regards to Worzel.
One of my all time favorites-the “Goodfellas” of video games!
in my opinion they rip 40% out of the story game to release it faster
How
Vito is a badass character
there r reason he back in 3...
I was so hyped when i hesred Mafia 2 will be rereleased but im disapointed to no end with this. Ist barely looks different to the Original release. But non the less i still love mafia 2 one of the best games ever, but they could really have done more. I hope the Mafia rework will be better.
I've played Mafia I when it came out and Mafia II two months ago, but I have to say, that they don't even compare. Mafia I is better all the way.
Have to agree. Graphics wise M2 is far better but the story in M1 is just brilliant. I'm really hoping that the remaster does it credit.
I agree too. Mafia 2 is better only in graphics, but everything else was more like a disappointment after the almost perfect Mafia 1 (which has much more content). It's a shame publisher pushed 2K Czech for early release so they had to cut so much content.
Just subscribed. You're so funny 😂. Love your content 🙌🙌
I was about 13 the first time I encountered this game. The game was fascinating for me but i had forgot about it since the remastered buzz started. It has been such a nostalgia trip.
I saw the Like Dale interview, and yes we definitely need Roxy to be a washed up Baliff in a KCD sequel.
Even if you lose them, they'll be on the hunt.
great video as always
28:14
Absolutely amazing the attention to details...he says
But not attention to how a man enters a vehicle??:)))
Ikr ...it felt sarcastic
9:07 The ground is also different. No clue why they would change that. I like the original cobblestone more, but perhaps it wasn't as New York style as the remaster sidewalk and that's why they changed it.
Mafia 1 remade from the ground up releases on the 28th of August 2020, should we wait and play this first one before this one?
The original ps4 version doesnt have blood foorprints and bulletholes etc. Did they fix it in this version?
How come I can’t access all the army, Vegas pack stuff from the get go? I remember being able to use all the dlc from the start on my Xbox 360. But on my Xbox one I just have vito’s regular clothes and Lincoln’s outfit
Now lets just wait for the 1 remake :)
Is this available for downloand now on xbox as well or just ps4? I preordered the Mafia remake coming out in August for xbox one.
just wanted to chime in on the missing cars you mentioned they unlock as you progresss through the story and you get access to all of them on your 2nd playthrough (if you do such a thing) i got confused by this too so dug deeper to find out cause mafia 2 is my favourite game of all time
But why lot of the old dlcs are not available
Mafia II is my favourite game ever and I’m getting definitive trilogy \m/.
Thank you for review, just payed for Mafia 2
Thank you for getting friends for life working I love that mod
What fantastic reviews? It got a 7 from like every major reviewer. Terribly underrated
This NPC with changed face and newly visible nametag now looks like a concept artist and character modeler that used to work for 2K Czech. His name also matches George (Jiri) Svetinsky.
Thanks Roxy I am really considering buying it now.
I might be wrong, but I believe some of the devs from Kingdom Come also worked on Mafia 2 and Mafia 1. If you look closely at the running animations, they look kind of similar to the running animations in Kingdom Come. 12:51
Where can I find the mods for the original?
Isn't there mods to fix the graphical issues?
Isn't this unplayable on consoles due to textures not loading and glaring rame rate issues
I have a question ,please if you could answer me... So I supose you have mafia 2 and 3 in you library in steam or on ps4 ,can you please tell me what is that in menu discount on mafia definitive edition for you? Cause they said there that everyone who owns mafia 2 or 3 will be able to get discount on the third game.(If you already own a combination of Mafia titles, you can get a special upgrade offer to complete your trilogy at a discount) .
I agree, we need more historic openworld T2 Rockstar type games, love your channel Roxy. Thanks, this video has made me go out and buy this game. Never got the true hype it deserved IMO
I'm with you Biscuit, love Mafia games!!
Just started one. Did they end up fixing 2 at least a little ?
Fantastic video and I share your passion for this game! I will say this though - if you are someone who can appreciate a great story and a masterpiece of a game like Mafia 2, then you owe it to yourself to see the first two Godfather films, as you will no doubt be left in awe.
This review just made me want the game even more 😊
They could of done better work on the remastered like make it run more smooth it’s still looks exactly the same on my Xbox one
It's easier to Rob a gun shop than a cafe
2:15 Ricky is that you?
I need some help rn,
As far as I can remember, I’ve always heard the name “Mafia 2” and the almost legendary status the goes with it.
I’ve been wanting to play this game so bad for a long long time and now I think this could be a good time because as far as I’m concerned, the devs have fixed the issues at launch.
What do u guys think?
Is it worth it for me to buy right now in October?
It is also important to mention I don’t really care about graphics or any of that. I just love a good story and a good game.
Any answers would be appreciated thanks!
Good story & good game is all you want? Then yes, get it. As you said, you've been wanting to play this "so bad for a long long time." Yes, get the game.
Big Mo Logan yeah I got the game yesterday, absolutely love it so far. Yes I will admit the definitive edition has issues. But it’s not all bad. Nothing game breaking anyway. The game is really immersive and I actually like the fact that’s it not all open world like GTA or Saints row. It makes you feel like you’re part of the world and you’re not just there to roam around in it. Looking forward to playing it some more (only on chapter 6).
