Dude, why are people so hung up on changing out the Pistons, a big waste to replace all the Pistons if you don't need to. You only replace that which is broken. The YOUNG LADY IS ONE HUNDRED PERCENT CORRECT WITH GOOD COMMON SENSE!!! Thanks 👍

    • @newtonfirefly3584

Correct Jason, but [O]Liv[ia and Danny are completely incorrect, wrong with not cleaning all of the carbon deposits off the pistons, inside the heads, valves as they did within the cylinders The carbon deposits result in detonation which results in harm.
All of that effort to open the engine, disassemble, examine everything, also remove every piston, change the bearings, hone the cylinders and not clean, wife, remove the carbon deposits from the pistons, heads, valves is obvious, clear, silly, foolish nonsense !! Everyone that does a refresh as this certainly cleans and removes all carbon deposits !
They clearly need to modify the fuel mixture and perhaps the fuel. But why are obviously very ignorant and refuse to accept the proper, correct, valid knowledge which is known for over 5 to 6 decades to over 120 years. Ethanol and methanol are far better hydrocarbon fuels with hydrogen is the best.
      @GNARLY SPEED SHOP  @GnarlySpeedShop
The inline fuel filter is certainly an improvement, but a 10 num replacement filter is far better for the fuel injection system. Adding, Switching to having "Flex-Fuel" for variable and high ethanol content is far better too.
However, Ignorant Fools will remain to be foolish accepting the false incorrect ideas, claims, information from those with improper, incorrect, invalid information lacking proper knowledge known form over 140 years.
Blogs, certainly 'comments' along with many involved in building, racing are certainly among those with incorrect, invalid, improper, false base, basis.
The actual professionals have connection with the proper knowledge.
Among the best available on-line are David Vizard, Lake Speed, Jr.. much from Steve Morris, , add especially EFI University, R.E. D which are actual engineers as Lake Speed, Jr. Certainly add experts as PME, Dennis and similar professional engineering, competent, engine builders as Ed Pink.
Among the most common is ignorance with, about fuels, lubrication and proper operating temperature.
All The Best and Much Success in Your Quest(s), Health, Happiness and Well Being 😊, Sincerely ☺
P.S. If You will check the CA Law, ask any PD officer, Sheriff, it is required to have the CA license plates-tags with the appropriate valid sticker on the front and rear of the vehicle along with the required registration and insurance information. Danny should already know this, since he has been loving in CA all these years, as i did when living there too [1982-1993].
Personally appreciate the older blue metal painted license tags, plates. They look especially very good with this 1967 GTO too! have been thinking often, many times about the specific 417 NPR and the meaning for this vehicle. Have You figured out a meaning yet ?

Never ever start a freshly assembled engine without using a preoiler to get all of the air bubbles out of the oil passages or the top end is going to run dry while the engine oil pump is trying to purge the airlocks out. Assuming you use a good assembly lube, probably no harm was dome. But listening to those hammering lifters made my teeth hurt. Anyway - nice engine.

So did you discover what caused the damage to #2? My guess is still a small brass washer was unknowingly lodged somewhere in the carb and it freed itself and it found its way to #2 and got chewed up.
The v-band on the exhaust is such a great idea.

    • @AndyFromBeaverton

@@jeffh.9999 Explain the scaring on the piston walls and the tiny bits of shrapnel in the pan. I did the same thing about 40 years ago. Luckily I got it before any damage. I small flat washer could easily pass the valve and end up flat against the cylinder sidewall. The washers are soft enough to get chewed up. We know metal got in somehow.
Maybe this piece of metal was in the carb loose left there during manufacturing. That's why I shake my carbs flip them upside down and open up the butterflies before I put them on.

Where are you guys? I guess its L.A. right?
That must have been so exciting and a big relief to drive it and know she's okay.
The big unanswered question is what was the diagnosis of the piston? Did she put it in the wrong way? Thats an important step in building engines. I didn't or we didn't find out what caused the scoring on the piston. Don't worry there is no way to learn without making mistakes. In fact if your not making mistakes your not trying hard enough. Nobody wants to fk up unfortunately you can't make gains with errors. Always right down the steps to check. I always do it methodically and recheck everything at least three times.
I remember building something and rechecked it for the third time.
Thats when I discovered a mistake.
Make check lists so you can check each component on a piece of paper.
Anyway this was a fun video and wow what a gorgeous day in Los Angeles! That coast line what a view! 😂❤👍👏🙋🏻‍♂️🇦🇺 Australia

Dexcool isn't called Dex-Kill for nothing.
Its gonna ruin your engine. Watch.
GM has been sued for all the Astros that have gone to the junkyard because of Dexkil. Some people junked their vehicles because they thought they blew the head gaskets but didn't. Then idiot mechanics and dishonest mechanics said they were blown, to make extra money, knowing they weren't blown. Thats when some people junked their vehicles. All because of dexcool coolant. It turns into literal mud, clogging everything.
Its garbage and doesn't work. It causes overheating.

It doesn't seem like you guys don't really want or appreciate comments, but the way you torqued the heads was not correct.
Rather than tell you, I will just advise you Google some LS rebuilds and discover what 'torque to yield' bolts are and how to properly tighten them.
You may start blowing head gaskets, so watch for that. Hopefully, your expensive aluminum heads will not end up warped.

Just a few questions from a seventy three year old ex hotrodder... starting with a kind of explanation of me.. As a kid your ages or even younger. I would spend a whole weekend washing, cleaning, using all the most expensive waxes and other to make our rides nice. My first new rig was the R code sixty three and a half ford galaxy black on black, four speed, posi, and so all that said, most say ya ya old timer.. what every old person says like yer lying. I spent hours waxing so it would shine at night off of moon lights. Ok, getting to the question is why stay with a patina look if its a hundred thousand mile drivable rig? I can see this one has a few battle scars from some younger person back in the day learning to drive. As clean as it looks, why not give it the full paint that would save the metal? I sure do hope the youtube monies help with building rigs as I am a alaskan and know of your taxes and how expensive it is to live where you are.. so do they tax your rig higher if nicer?

Last vehicle i had that was a big pain in my ass building and keeping it together for the first two years i kept as the daily driver firewood hauler and scrap metal hauler was, a farm truck with a built 355 xe competition cams 268h 477/480 lift 86 chevy k20 custom deluxe long bed 3/4 ton 4x4 and I owned it for 12 and 1/2 years

Same truck I have mentioned before with the trw 0.20 dome pistons file fit mahle piston rings and the th400 turbo transmission with the B&M tork master 3000 rpm stall torque converter which is actually more like a 21,00-2,200rpm stall torque converter at least it was in that truck, truck had 3.08 gears because of when I destroyed the front axle it got switched to 83 gmc k15 High Sierra heavy duty 6 lug corporate gm10 bolt front completely rebuilt new axle shafts, only used part was my factory gm 10 bolt manual hubs, and the gm corporate rear 12 bolt that other reseal the diff cover I didn't touch, truck exhaust was big primary tube hedmann full length tube headers and 2 1/2 pipe 18 inch long collector extensions, neighbors hated that truck so did the trailer court when I lived in town to help out my best friend.. especially when I would come idling into the trailer court around 3:30am and I really did idle it around but it wouldn't climb the speed bumps so I had to give it gas to drive over them spread out each lane usually have 3, and it had a pretty decent lope to motor.. truck had 16x8 American racing atlas chrome plates aluminum wheels and Kumho Road Venture MT KL71 tires so I kept most of the 3/4 ton ground clearance and height truck was also a rusty beat to hell well used farm truck, two midnight blue and white with a double blue pinstripe around the truck along the top bodyline, except the front end a rusty but useable faded red single headlight 83 1500 gmc High Sierra doghouse minus the really decent shiny black 86 chevy c10 Silverado hood so the truck definitely stood out..

Congratulations on getting Big Wave back on the road where it belongs. Theres no need to replace all the pistons with such little time on them. They should do just fine. Looking forward to seeing your adventurea in Big Wave. Again, congratulations on a job well done. 😉

Did you check clearances this time around? Don't trust the machine shop, its up to the builder to check and make sure its correct. There are lots of clearances that need to be checked during assembly. Buy the book Chevrolet Power The Official Factory Performance Guide. It doesn't cover LS, BUT the 4 page build sheet in the back should be filled out as thoroughly as possible during the build.

OMG!!! Do you know what's going to happen if you don't clean those piston tops? NOTHING!!!! LOL. Great job Liv. Just remember, 98% of the people on here that like to drop some of those awesome comments have never left their couch, much less accomplish what you have. Especially being a woman wrenching on cars. Anyone that's wrenched on cars have been clueless. EVERYONE has to learn. No matter gender. My hat is off to you. You have learned so much. Be proud of yourself.
