Most sci-fi universes would probably just handwave chaos as "magic" but not 40k so let me go into a bit of detail on how it works. Intro by Henrik Sigeman / archwarhammer
emperor hated religion which is where the whole 40k theory of one of the now long long forgotten chaos gods got its power from..essentially a atheist god that hated the other gods and on numerous attempts tried to kill them and the chaos gods became afraid so they started the plan to cause the heresy.
Also the "Lectitio Divinitatus" basically the Bible of the Imperium was written by the Primarch Lorgar - who just happend to be a bloody traitor and daemon-worshiper.
My best friend growing up got DEEP into 40k and would tell me all this shit about the lore and I always just sort of "that's crazy bro" him and never got into it myself. He unfortuantely died of cancer 10 years ago now. I just recently decided to jump in and start reading the books and found you through Sargon and that Chaos apologist video. Listening to your videos brings me back to hanging out with my buddy and I just wish I could go back and share in the joy of this utterly insane universe. But thank you for this library of content so I can bro out with my friend in spirit. It's weirdly emotional, and I appreciate it.
I started with a video game called warhammer battlemarch also known as marked of chaos I believe. It made me a lifetime warhammer player that I am today. I don't stick to any one faction. Unlike my friend who is a deathwing terminators fanatic who can't see himself playing anything else I have several favorite factions in warhammer and that includes the orcs, orruks or orks more commonly known as greenskins as well as other human factions in 40K and age of sigmar and I Plat chaos undivided as well. Fielding any one of the armies of the ruinous powers as I see fit to do so as it's a don't make me pick a favorite situation when it comes to them.

Actually, the Emperor doesn't approve. He wanted to keep all this silent under the Imperial Truth. It fell to great Lorgar to educate humanity with faith and fire.

+Arch Warhammer Please tell me what you think of this deliberation. I believe Tzeentch actually both loves and hates Humanity because they are the embodiment of himself. They are a species of many faults, two in particular contradict one another so profoundly that the god can't help but take notice. They have been innovative, the very pinnacle of change, and yet they can stagnate to near pre-industrial ages. Their emotions can change on a whim; just introduce an outside element and they can either refuse to change or become an entirely different person. Very much like Tzeentch. He is the Lord of Change. Change is not always bad, but it's not always good either. Change can be good in the form of invention and evolution, but it can also mean to switch from that into stagnation and devolution. Tzeentch plans contradict himself because he is a contradiction as well. He can change in good ways but, despite his initial plans, he can change into something that would hinder himself and his earlier plans, forcing him to make new plans. He is at constant war with himself more than he is with the other Gods. His nature forces him to evolve and stagnate against his own desires. I believe he sees Humanity as the embodiment of his own struggle so if he can somehow manipulate Humanity to achieve a positive result in the end, he could theoretically use that experiment to fix himself, but then he will contradict himself and degrade at points most detrimental to his 'master goal,' creating a never ending cycle. He hates the Emperor. He calls him the Anathema. With his vast knowledge, why would Tzeentch use that one word to describe the Emperor? I believe it is because the Emperor is what Tzeentch himself desires to be: a complete being who can bring change and never change himself. He envies Humanity for this is their fullest potential personified while he is stuck in his tumultuous state. This is why Tzeentch loves and hates both himself and Humanity. His complexity is greater then even his own mind can comprehend. He realizes that his master plan will always be impossible to achieve despite what he tells his underlings. Perhaps this revelation is something he considers his greatest challenge and if there's something Tzeentch would love, it'd be a perpetually unsolvable problem to solve yet hate due to not being able to solve it. This dilemma is a never ending war of change, to change in a series of ways to eventually overcome his own need to change. This challenge embodies Tzeentch himself, much like Humanity, thus he both loves and hates himself as much as he loves and hates Humanity. Try not to let this blow up your mind.

would it theoretically be possible to change the nature of the warp gods through collective belief? If enough people in the imperium started thinking or feeling a certain way about Tzeentch would that result in him possibly becoming less of an asshat?
No. See people don't even KNOW, about Tzeentch. Or Khorne or any of them. That information is solely retained by the Inquisition, Chaos Marines/fallen, and the Chaos entities themselves. We can't change anything, because A.) About 99% of makind doesn't know about Tzeentch, and B.) If we know of any Chaos entity, that opening allows them to flood in, corrupt whisper and taint us, and even just resisting that is exhausting and destructive, so we'd never be able to influence anything before most people were just enslaved and serving. As a final caveat, as something that relies on change to feed....Tzeentch would LOVE, to be seen as nice. It would make the betrayal and subsequent energies of change taste all the sweeter
Theoretically, if the entire Imperium spontaneously not o my gained knowledge of Tzeentch, it also believed with their entire hearts that he was ALSO the Chaos God of fluffy puppies and hu gs, what would hapen? That's the questoon.
If everyone started believing that Tzeench is a God of pizza and puppies then that might slightly change the way Tzeench behaves but you also need to convince everyone that they need to stop being hopeful and ambitious. Also keep in mind that you would need to spread and maintain this galaxy spanning religion that believes that puppies and pizza are the greatest things in existence and that change, hope and ambition are unholy while the God you are worshipping is trying his best to stop you from irreversibly changing him.
so let me get this straight if a million people in the imperium of man believed the emperor will resurrect tomorrow it will happen ? because that is awesome
+Ethan McDonald The encroaching silence of malice consumes your writhing plans of fate. Their chains broken and cast off into the infinty of the immaterium. Malice consumes all.
A lot of chaos champion weapons are infused with daemons. Can see a lot of examples in the literature. Example The Berzerker Glaive is a weapon that the bearer must constantly fight with to remain in control of. The blade contains the bound essence of a Bloodletter which has been driven truly insane by its captivity
technically the concept of "dead"docent exist in the warp, a god might fade away but calling said god "dead" would be incorrect, powerless is probably a better definition.
Blood for the blood god? Skulls for the skull throne? Blood for the blood god. Skulls for the skull throne. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!!!! SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE!!!!!
Nobody really knows he's on the border of being a material being and a warp entity and nobody wants to push or pull him in one direction out of fear of him creating a second Eye of Terror on Terra
Yes. You got Nurgle, who's got a twisted sense of parental love and tranquility. And Slaanesh, who is all about happiness (an all other things in excess).
Good series of videos. Sent a lot of my mates these videos because they are just getting into 40K. I havent played since 2nd ed. So it's a nice reminder for me too.
no, not demons, the orks have the ability to believe there weapons, tools and vehicles to work. its the magic they use that does create the effects, they cast warpenergy into spells, like any ordinary spellcaster/psionic would. All demons are magic, but not all magic is demons. just like all diamants are carbon, but not all carbon are diamants.
I've been bouncing an idea around for a while, and this seemed like a good place to share them; what if the chaos gods are dethroned? What happens when a new god appears that draws from the same emotions as one of the big four? Maybe that was the emperor's plan to destroy chaos, to replace tzeentch with the machine god, nurgle with yinnid, and khorne with himself. I've no idea who he could grab to overthrow slaaesh though. Any ideas?
Wait a sec, if demons just want to feast on emotion, why would Nurgle and Söasnesh demons kill? Nurgle would let people just rot away, even sustain them so they get really desperate, and Slaanesh... Wouldn't his demons just constantly rape and hurt but also pleasure people? Until they are exhausted and pretty much dead anyway? At the same time, wouldn't Tzeentch just cut off an arm, just to change it up and heal it back again, only to cut off a foot and so on?
Now that is the question and the answer is fairly simple, if you would allow them to exist and spread their power into the galaxy, that would be what happen, Nurglisch Rotten Zombies, Slanesh Orgy Partys etc. But their is always someone who "fucks" up their plan, like the Inquisition, SM etc. so the killing is a mere act of self defence, in fact the Chaos Forces are the oppressed minority, when i fact their just want to share their culural enrichment to the Galaxy.
Exactly. They are the Victims, the #notmyimperium Imperial Propaganda spread lies in their smeary Campaign, to make the Chaos Gods, look like this evil force, when in fact they just need a safe space and a little hug here and there. #makelovenotwar #slaanesh4president.
This is very interesting and explains the theocracy and religious symbols of the Empire in 40K, which I always found bizarre. Also, some parts of the narrative reminds me of the concept of Tulpa (a creature created by belief) found in Buddhist circles. . Making 40K more interesting..
What if the Warp and the immaterium actually exist, but we believe it doesn't exist... so it... doesn't exist... Let's all believe that there's a God of money and awesomeness and let's see if it works.
"... the emperor himself is also almost certainly to some extent a Chaos God." That sounds like the "heretical" bell of truth, you should report to your local commissar.
+Thomas Scally think hugh hefner with more bunnies and bunnies likely to stab each other to be the arch bunny and then give them superpowers with spaceships.
+Thomas Scally Because, honestly, their society isn't much to speak of. In general that is. They are entirely too occupied with gathering new subjects to inflict their deprived acts upon to have much time to structure something *we* would define as a society.
we don't talk about him ( hes name is red angel ) hes not a blood angel ( when the bloodangels first fought chaos during horus heresy they fell into the red thirst and a greater deamon of tzeentch offered to cure them if sanguinias gave him self to CHAOS! and my boy was just about to do it before a captain of a company said I will and well boom there he his not really a traitor just took one for the team ;)
Matthew Zylinski Oh dang, its Apothecary Meros. Man, that guy got almost killed by the Eldar, brought back using some sacrophagus filled with tech from before the age of strife, and also sees into the future whilst doing that, (meeting a battle brother who was getting healed in the same sacrophagus... about 10 thousand years in the future)... only to become a demon. That sucks. In case you don't know what I am talking about, it was a short story at the end of the 2nd Blood Angels Omnibus.
arch im wondering rether then beat up the mail man what if you went down to the post office with a pacaged bomb with a timer droped it off what kind of effect whood that have or just sent a ton of roses and perfumes as a thank you
Man I like your videos. Keep them up :D BY the way, how come Eldar can "forget" very important information on chaos and gods ? IS that even possible ? I could understand if they were "no longer powerful enough to do it" but simply forgotten knowledge ?
Over 99% of the Eldar died when Slaanesh was born in 30k. But even before that, knowledge of how they created their Gods was disappearing as the Great Eldar Orgy went on.
Great videos! Could you do a request video when you have some spare time? Talking about your views on the likelyhood of the emperor being a warp god? He sure have alot of belivers and such to affect the warp, right?
Arch a question if you will, now you said beings of the warp could be benign and such depending on their belief. Now technically Chaos can not have order and as such no true strict ruleset on behavior because order cannot coexist with chaos itself. Does this mean (with the right following) Daemons or even minor chaos gods could be benevolent in nature?
Also another thing, since time travel seems to be a thing in 40k (looking at that 1 ork waagh where the boss was sent back in time and killed his doppleganger) Does this only affect material forces moving through the warp? If not why doesn't chaos just go back in time and kill all of their enemies? Also it seems like chaos daemons and such work almost exactly like the Orks with their "we believe it which makes it true" philosophy.
Yes in theory Chaos Gods and Demons could be benevolent, Nurgle and his Demons are known for being disturbingly friendly and cheerful, and the other Chaos gods can be surprisingly benevolent but their incredibly capricious individuals, Tzeentch might give you all sorts of powers but then he can come up with a plan that can only be achieved by throwing you under the bus
to answer that : "ever heard of too much of a good thing." e.g. chaos god of milk & cookies = you're f*cked. hugs & snuggles = you're f*cked. just the right amount of all the good things = f*cked in just the right amount of excess & extreemes. the eldar gods wernt exactly chaos daemons and they were all benevolent. esspecaily khaine to make a point... i mean khaine and cegorach are helping the eldar out the most... through "too much of a good thing." because at times you need to go over rationalitys limit in excess. to get what needs to be done done.
BRILLIANTLY said...I'm sincerely curious how long it will take humanity to realize this is the reality of EVERYTHING....Not just in the lore of an INCREDIBLY detailed fantasy ;)
Gotta love your humor Arch. Short question tough: How far spread is the knowledge of how the chaos works in the warhammer universe? The elder obviously knew at some point how to manipulate it. I guess the Emperor I somewhat aware of it. But anyone else?
I wonder if the heads of the Imperium understood this, and that is why they made citizens believe the Emperor is a god, to make him one.
well the emperor prolly understood this when he was makeing the imperium

Also keep in mind that you would need to spread and maintain this galaxy spanning religion that believes that puppies and pizza are the greatest things in existence and that change, hope and ambition are unholy while the God you are worshipping is trying his best to stop you from irreversibly changing him.
I just love your channel. These lore videos have been a marvelously structured introduction to 40k.
so let me get this straight
if a million people in the imperium of man believed the emperor will resurrect tomorrow it will happen ?
because that is awesome
Congratulations Arch!! Your informative video has increased my survival potential within the warp by almost two wolves. XD
Chaos gods? Nope, they don't exist. There is only Malal.
+Garett Crook Asking the real questions.
even chaos see that as heresy
HERSEY!...EVEN AMONGST HERETICS!
*People chanting Tzeentch cultist in background*
+Ethan McDonald I don't hear any chanting! There isn't any chanting!
+Ethan McDonald The encroaching silence of malice consumes your writhing plans of fate. Their chains broken and cast off into the infinty of the immaterium. Malice consumes all.
I've been recently getting into the 40k lore and this video definitely helped me out to understand the warp a little more. thanks for the upload!
what about bounding a demon into an object? (like a sword or a cannon)
possible, it works much like with living people but needs waaaaaay more energy
A lot of chaos champion weapons are infused with daemons. Can see a lot of examples in the literature. Example The Berzerker Glaive is a weapon that the bearer must constantly fight with to remain in control of. The blade contains the bound essence of a Bloodletter which has been driven truly insane by its captivity
Exclude him from a dawn of war game he would have fit into nicely??
if lot of people think that there's deamon in sword there will be deamon in sword
+Sayrus The Deamon Primach of Shadow Beasts Legion
Sounds very orky.
Your Santa Claus analogy makes me think that Krampus must be one fuck of a powerful Slaaneshi daemon.
Is it possible to kill a god in the warp?
technically the concept of "dead"docent exist in the warp, a god might fade away but calling said god "dead" would be incorrect, powerless is probably a better definition.
+Arch Warhammer aren't they just super-powered daemons? The chaos gods that is. So if struck down in the warp wouldn't it kill them?
No.
Yes slannesh killed most of the eldar gods and if all the people in the universe die the gods would immediately die to
Josh Wall Only a god can kill a god.
good guy arch is back with informative lore YES
Thanks for the nice bedtime story Uncle Arch!
Fear the tea kettles.
believe in the teapot around saturn :P
@@rebeccaconlon9743 you can't be sure it isn't there
Blood for the blood god?
Skulls for the skull throne?
Blood for the blood god.
Skulls for the skull throne.
BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!!!!
SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE!!!!!
Milk for the Khorne Flakes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, we get it. You are Hillary supporter. She menstruated for "greater good." Now shut up and vote God Emperor Trump
+Luckiller 01 Hillary seems much more Tzeentchi than Khornite, Khornite fights fair
I felt a disturbance in the warp when he started talking about mail boxes... It felt personal.
We shall send them in to the SUPER WARP !!!! Go Draigo Go Go GO GO !!!
Tarorc79 *Blasts off*
Arch...I have to say...your comment section is some of the funniest reads I've had in a while
With all of the people I the imperium that believe in the emperor and his sheer power when he was alive, what exactly is the emperor now?
Nobody really knows he's on the border of being a material being and a warp entity and nobody wants to push or pull him in one direction out of fear of him creating a second Eye of Terror on Terra
A corpse on a chair.
+Ruben Plooster You heretic!
The rolling of your Rs is exquisite. Bravo good man, bravo.
So ... Santa is a Chaos god... Purge The Unclean!!!!
xXE4GLEyEXx BURN THE HERETIC!!
Shortest way to describe the Warp is, that it's the Silent Hills of the Galaxy.
lore, on a friday! the warp was generous this day!!!
so would there be choas gods like zeus and odin and the likes ?
Is there chaos god of love or peace or happiness?
Yes. You got Nurgle, who's got a twisted sense of parental love and tranquility. And Slaanesh, who is all about happiness (an all other things in excess).
Dear god sucks to be civilian in the IoM.
Good series of videos. Sent a lot of my mates these videos because they are just getting into 40K.
I havent played since 2nd ed. So it's a nice reminder for me too.
so through this logic does that mean all ork vehicles are daemons then? due to the whole aspect if enough orks believe it will work it will work!
no, not demons, the orks have the ability to believe there weapons, tools and vehicles to work.
its the magic they use that does create the effects, they cast warpenergy into spells, like any ordinary spellcaster/psionic would.
Any ideas?
Carol Channing
TL;DR: Santa is a demon
It's kinda obvious, just move the 'n' to the end...
@@gracefool indeed
really love your videos arch, keep up the great work :)
But their is always someone who "fucks" up their plan, like the Inquisition, SM etc. so the killing is a mere act of self defence, in fact the Chaos Forces are the oppressed minority, when i fact their just want to share their culural enrichment to the Galaxy.
twistedmetal04 those evil racist Imperials! The Chaos Gods are just misunderstood!!!!
Exactly. They are the Victims, the #notmyimperium Imperial Propaganda spread lies in their smeary Campaign, to make the Chaos Gods, look like this evil force, when in fact they just need a safe space and a little hug here and there. #makelovenotwar #slaanesh4president.
All right hippie. Thats enough bullshit. Get back to class or ill have to call your parents.
thanks arch just keep what you're doing cos you are doing it great
This is very interesting and explains the theocracy and religious
symbols of the Empire in 40K, which I always found bizarre.
Also, some parts of the narrative reminds me of the concept of Tulpa (a creature created by belief) found in Buddhist circles. .
Making 40K more interesting..
bleh bluh. True
All of your Videos Arch are amazing, both funny and interesting. The only complaint i have is they're not 1 hour long
What if the Warp and the immaterium actually exist, but we believe it doesn't exist... so it... doesn't exist... Let's all believe that there's a God of money and awesomeness and let's see if it works.
"... the emperor himself is also almost certainly to some extent a Chaos God."
That sounds like the "heretical" bell of truth, you should report to your local commissar.
Under an hour long. Disliked.
Just kidding.
thanks to your awsome humour my long Night panick attacks are somewhat bearable while listening to You ,thanks man apreciate your work!
Dark Eldar plox! :D
Yeah I've seen lore videos on them but I've never got a feel for what their society is actually like
+Thomas Scally sex sex murder murder enhance enslave.
+Garett Crook yeah I know that but I want to know how Dark Eldar politics work
+Thomas Scally think hugh hefner with more bunnies and bunnies likely to stab each other to be the arch bunny and then give them superpowers with spaceships.
+Thomas Scally Because, honestly, their society isn't much to speak of. In general that is. They are entirely too occupied with gathering new subjects to inflict their deprived acts upon to have much time to structure something *we* would define as a society.
I absolutely love the way you cover information, and hope you continue for a very long time. Santa is a Slaaneshi demon.
No slanneshes rival
Does this mean that Harambe could be a Chaos God
chaos and warp lore is my favorite!thx Arch!
the warp os basically the Warhammer equivalent of Hell
Combined with Cthulhu and the Twilight Zone on STEROIDS!!!
0:23. What is that flaming space marine in the back? He seems to have the insignia of the blood angels on him. Someone explain please?
hes probaly a traitor
Cody Archer Yes, but why does he look like the human torch?
we don't talk about him ( hes name is red angel ) hes not a blood angel ( when the bloodangels first fought chaos during horus heresy they fell into the red thirst and a greater deamon of tzeentch offered to cure them if sanguinias gave him self to CHAOS! and my boy was just about to do it before a captain of a company said I will and well boom there he his not really a traitor just took one for the team ;)
Matthew Zylinski Awesome, thanks man.
That sucks. In case you don't know what I am talking about, it was a short story at the end of the 2nd Blood Angels Omnibus.
the cometary made me loose my shit XD
Thats sad. I hope you found it again, or got new shit...
You're so entertaining! Also i really love the way you say "You see..." :D
Listening to warp 40k lore makes me think the 40ks developers are ex Christians, closet Christians or crazy Christians like myself
Thanks for putting out all this awesome content even though you dont have lost of subs :)
Chaos sounds alot like capitalism.
Another top-notch video great as always but I want some Khorne videos!
So beautifully explained. Well done mate.
ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS. I love this manner of explanation.
arch im wondering rether then beat up the mail man what if you went down to the post office with a pacaged bomb with a timer droped it off what kind of effect whood that have or just sent a ton of roses and perfumes as a thank you
How would you categorize the daemon shenanigans in Dan Abnett's Ravenor trilogy?
Oh arch you make lore so fun
As usual excellent cant wait for more.
can I have the link for the trap at 30:20? thank you
Thanks for an other great video arch!
Sweet, I do love your videos on the immaterium (y) Perhaps you could make a massive Magnus/Ahriman video sometime in the future?
Have you ever thought about putting these lore videos into podcast form? Would love to listen to these on the go!
so when demons posses a human or whatever, do they still require warp energy or do they feed of the host or what?
What about Malice?
Man I like your videos. Keep them up :D
BY the way, how come Eldar can "forget" very important information on chaos and gods ? IS that even possible ? I could understand if they were "no longer powerful enough to do it" but simply forgotten knowledge ?
Over 99% of the Eldar died when Slaanesh was born in 30k. But even before that, knowledge of how they created their Gods was disappearing as the Great Eldar Orgy went on.
Could you do a video about different materials of the 40k universum? I mean adamintium, plasteel, etc, etc.
could you make a video of the tyranid "shadow in the warp", since it seems to be related
I think you need to add this video to the main 40k lore list
The postman bit sent me in to a blind rage just envisioning it
BRILLIANTLY said...I'm sincerely curious how long it will take humanity to realize this is the reality of EVERYTHING....Not just in the lore of an INCREDIBLY detailed fantasy ;)
Actually, the voice telling me to put on some death metal and have fun with a chainsaw never gets old.
Gotta love your humor Arch.
Short question tough:
How far spread is the knowledge of how the chaos works in the warhammer universe?
The elder obviously knew at some point how to manipulate it.
I guess the Emperor I somewhat aware of it.
But anyone else?
Looks up Masaki Sumitani, and then asks: " I wonder if the custodes are still recruiting , I found a new candidate ."
is this still fantasy? it makes so much sense that it could be straight from reality
