      I’m so sorry for the loss of your mother. I am so delighted to know that she managed the cafeteria - the food and warm welcoming service she oversaw and provided was appreciated by man, I’m certain. All of the friends and acquaintances she met along the way. What a wonderful life. All of my best to yoy

    You tapped into my childhood , lol ! I was in Junior High in 1973- 74 and used to loved going to K-Mart with mom. I used to look at the color TVs , tape cassettes , radios , toys , etc. We used to eat at the deli and I always left the store with a bag of hot popcorn and a Slushee. It didn't take much to make us happy back in the day , lol!.

    Kmart was a great place to shop. I remember when I was growing up in Chicago, there was a store a couple minutes away from my house in Norridge. I remember there was a snack bar in the store, and people would always be there enjoying a little snack. When I moved to the suburbs, there was one not too far from me, and there was a Little Caesars in the store. I ate there a few times, and it was good food. Just sad these stores are not around anymore

      +M C Taylor They were fake. They had special public address codes for various situations - for fire, carry out, 'get carts', and, of course, 'security issues', among others.
      But this one was pretty well done; it breaks in over the music like a real announcement. The only 'flaw' is that it isn't half-garbled by the announcer practically deep-throating the mic like real store personnel would.

      These played all the time when I worked there and they were fake. If there was a real shoplifter in the store the girl at the front desk would announce "Code one and a half please, code one and a half". Don't know if they used that code everywhere or not but it was always an exciting time at our store when it was announced. We'd make a mad dash to the front door to see what was going on. In one incident the security guy locked the front doors and when the shoplifter made a mad dash for the door he hit it like a brick wall and it knocked him silly. It was pretty awesome watching him run as fast as he could into a locked glass door.

That it was NOT a "piped in" service is why these are still "floating" around, some workers took the tapes home. I'd make monthly trips spending roughly $100/mo, and am thinking of doing a Kmart collection- not this "look what fixtures I bought during liquidation" like you see others do, real Kmart stuff like my Basic Editions and Route 66 outfits, Essential Home laundry baskets, Northwest Territory coats, stuff that's exclusive to Kmart that I bought from non-closing Kmart's.

      No offense to Walmart workers or anything like that, because I find a lot than very engaging and interesting people, but Kmart definitely had the best customer service when customer service was a priority for Kmart. I used to shop at the assembly Square in Massachusetts in the 90s And he had wonderful service. But when they rearrange things I think around that time may be in the late 90s I think that’s when they stopped actually develop anything in Kmart. They weren’t hiring enough people to work at the cash registers or anything like that. Maybe they were too busy trying to straighten up the store one customers came in and messed up all the tables. I don’t know. But it once was a wonderful place to shop, to dine at, and connect with others (since ours was connected to an old mall at that time).

    S.S. Kresge Co. was the original name of the K Mart Corporation,
    they were originally something like Woolworth...more of a five and dime and then
    morphed into a super discount center like we know today in the early 70s and beyond. The company symbol in the upper right hand corner was SS Kresege's .

Nothing more relaxing than old muzak, move out of the way lofi and chopped up oldies, coming from a millennial.

    While I do remember the music playing in the background of stores, it was constantly interrupted over the PA system with the endless annoying cacophony of paging calls and of course the occasional blue light special. This was done to the point that any message that was being transmitted over the corporate feed was drowned out and rendered meaningless. I also remember a pre-recorded blip that something like "this is the Kmart radio network."

    • @kennethsouthard6042
      @kennethsouthard6042 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The PA announcements always took the form first name, department, first name, like "Suzie to Domestics, Suzie," followed by "Sam to Hardware, Sam." Of course Suzie and Sam never seemed to respond immediately and had to be paged over and over again, meanwhile other pages would be interspersed to the point that I don't think you never went more than 15 seconds or so between pages constantly interrupting the background music or message. Given the crackling nature of the PA, sometimes hearing feedback and along with the fact that most people really do not have good announcing voices all would drive you up the wall and made the store experience feel more like an institution that you wanted to escape.
      Back then it was like an unwritten rule that department stores used gentle signaling bells and discount stores used the obnoxious PA system. Target being born out of the Dayton Hudson Corporation which owned department stores broke this rule and made the discount shopping experience more dignified. I'm sure that Kmart upper management saw the PA system as efficient, but in the end may have actually been a contributor to their downfall.

    "Will security report to section 3, please?" Brings back memories. When I worked at Target in 1979-80, they had a code for when they needed all available male employees up front to help out security, something like 'Mr Jackson to register 4, please," otherwise paging for security would alert the shoplifter(s). It could get physical and rowdy at times, not sure what store policies are these days - probably changed a lot.
