- Alright, I'm ready for the comment section: what did I mess up? Get right? Forget? You know what to do :) ⬇️
NOTE: I ranked by TONY AWARDS year, so while Sound of Music debuted in 1959, it was in the 1960 Tony season/awards! Sorry for any confusion here!!

Haha! I stumbled into an ensemble role in a regional production of She Loves Me and it was so much fun. They let me go big with both the violinist at the restaurant and with the optometrist. Exactly the kind of work I always snatched while everyone else was fighting over the leads.
I 100% agree with you about the Company revival over Sweeney Todd and Bobbie over Bobby. It just makes so much more sense now.
I'm getting the sense that you never saw the 1982 proshot of Sweeney with Dame Lansbury and George Hearn (he won an Emmy for it). Check it out. THE version of Sweeney Todd. Unmatched.
The way I am dying to play Dolly and Mama. Good gosh!
The way I laughed when you said what you were humming for Hair. Haha!
Listen: I warned you that no one knows what I'm humming 😅😅😅
LOVE LOVE LOVE all of these!!! Bye Bye Birdie was my obsession as a kid!!!
Honestly Rosie + albert 4eva
Joe Farrel, Another person I've know since childhood. Joe and I used to do theater together as kids. :)
I've worked with him a couple times, too :) He's great.
Great list!!!! Here is my top 10 of the 60s and 70s - granted the 1970s is a decade of Broadway I am not nearly as familiar with
10. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
09. Camelot
08. Company
07. Mame
06. Bye Bye Birdie
05. Cabaret
04. Chicago
03. A Chorus Line
02. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
01. Pippin
Oooooh pippin #1 is a HOT take. Here for your list!
Donna Murphy broke my heart as Dolly Levi! OH MY GOSH
the BEST
60's Top 10 (in no certain order): How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Hello Dolly, Oliver, Sweet Charity, 1776, Carnival, She Loves Me, Funny Girl, Mame, and The Music Man. 70's: Jesus Christ Superstar, , Pippin, The Wiz, Evita, They're Playing Our Song, Grease, Follies, Chicago, Sweeney Todd, Godspell and Annie.
GREASE made it in your list! Hot takes here!
@@itskatharinequinn I know how much you like Grease. ;) I was Vince Fontane when I was younger. The pre-show was so much fun. Then I got to take a nap for a few hours and be in the last scene. Easiest job ever. Good times. Lol.
Love these lists! Im aware of all of these shows but havent seen most of them. Its fascinating to see what was popular then versus what is popular now.
They're so fun to make. And honestly a fun challenge! And right? I actually feel like our appetites right now are NOT dissimilar to 80s 90s--going to be interesting to see how it shakes out.
Love this list!! I’m so curious to see where Merrily will fall on your 80s list. My favorite og flop turned historic incredible revival.
🙃🙃🙃 stay tunneeeeeedddd
The part of me that was weirdly obsessed with Later from A Little Night Music in high school is thrilled to see it so high up the list!
As someone who's never really emotionally understood Company because Bobby's agonies marriage just made no sense you make a very compelling argument for a female Bobby. I'll have to see a production like that some day.
I loooove this--and yes! If the tour of Company makes its way anywhere near you, it's totally worth it!
Totally agree with revival of Company (with Bobbie) and #1 Gypsy..guess I like middle age woman too..never thought of that connection...
ALWAYS here for Bobbie not Bobby :)
Hello Dolly! revival changed my mind about those older shows. We sat front row and I still am OBSESSED with the costumes and sets. OBSESSED!!! I saw Bernadette and Victor and they were magic! There was a flub with food and I couldn’t have loved their reaction more. Now I want every show to have something go wrong bc I’m here for character breaks and laughs bc it’s live theater and I love it all.
Also saw Patti in Company and she was magical but can we talk about Matt singing I’m not getting married today!!!!!! That was impeccably sung and the set/prop choreo was CHEFS KISS 🤌🏻💋I immediately wanted to rewind the moment and have them all do it again. 🥰
Hello Dolly is...perfect. Will happily die on this hill.
Every little step 🙌🏽
I am eagerly awaiting a lush, all star ALNM at the Beaumont!
Literally drooling at the thought.
I only hear Carol Burnett singing I'm still here. :)
oldest 1960 musical is the King and I. Or is it Fiddler?
the annie hate is crazy! that show got me into musical theatre and grace walked so miss honey could run! leave her alone!
in general you put the ones i would’ve put closer to 1 closer to 15…
THIS COMMENT WINNNNNNS
No Pippin?
I would have put Oliver! on my list...
First of all, it's Follies, not Folly. And you missed what I believe is the best Jerry Herman musical, Mame. Angela Lansbury killed it. And as I am not a woman, my taste in musicals are not quite the same as yours. I DID NOT LIKE Annie. I didn't particularly like Hair. Bye Bye Birdie and Once Upon a Mattress?? Come on. I can get on the Soundheim musicals bandwagon, but you didn't even put any of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals in your list. The 70's saw Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. And you forgot to mention Oliver. Or Man of La Mancha. Now, I don't actually care who sings a great song, as long as it has a good story and the song fits the musical. Angela Lansbury was great in the Gypsy revival as well. And why not Camelot? Soundheim adored Lerner and Lowe. And he adored Rogers and Hammerstein. And really, The Sound of Music was the last great musical that featured the great Mary Martin. And how can you forget Funny Girl? I am glad you didn''t mention Grease, which I put in the same category as Hair. Good, but not immortal. As you say, each person has different preferences, likes and dislikes. There is no universe, however, that should neglect magnificent musicals like Mame, Camelot, Oliver, Evita, and Funny Girl. And for Bye Bye Birdie and Once Upon a Mattress? As I said, different people will have different opinions.
I said Follies :) I do love Mame, but I definitely prefer Hello Dolly. Evita is in my 80s 90s video because I'm going by Tony's year, but I have no regrets about missing Camelot, Oliver, Man of La Mancha, or Funny Girl. Different strokes!
@@itskatharinequinn I didn't hear the ies, sorry about that. Though my favorite version of Follies is the one with Barbara Cook, George Hearn, Mandy Patinkin and Lee Remick. I always think of Evita as a 70's show, since it originated on the West End in 1978. I like the story of Mame quite a bit better than Hello Dolly. And if it's a criminal malpractice to have Audrey play Eliza (instead of Julie), it's also criminal malpractice to have Lucille Ball take over the role of Mame from Angela.
I can't get into By Bye Birdie or the Fantasticks, for that matter. Nor can I get into Once Upon a Mattress. I prefer to dream the impossible dream.
