25:25 i will always defend the dear evan hansen movie with my life. was ben platt the best choice? no.. but his acting was awesome in it, the movie added new complexity to side characters and the ending was way better than the stage version imo.
Loved this! So entertaining to watch. My question is always - Why don’t people respond to "In the Heights" with any amount of excitement when it's music is so close to that of Hamilton?
Thank you for watching! This is just a guess, but I think the time frame hamilton came out was instrumental to its success. social media was really started taking a hold of pop culture in 2015, so it can spread in popularity much much faster than possible in 2008 with in the heights. I think another part of it can be a level of familiarity going into the show. Everyone has been taught US History to some capacity, so to see a modern spin on something familiar like US history can be an easier sales pitch to someone instead of seeing an original show that is less familiar to someone. I think that rationale is why you are so many reboots, sequels and spin offs instead of original movies now. Again, these are all guesses and assumptions, no idea but that’s my take!
Sweeney Todd stage production has at least one song that was NOT in the movie, that is one of the most beautiful, haunting songs I've ever heard. Well worth getting the album just for the original stage show music if possible.
I've gotten to listen to the original soundtrack, it really is incredible how much they crank up the macabre dissonance in it! Also, I was lucky enough to snag tickets for the March 18 preview, LORD I am excited
Despite being exposed to musicals such as Les Mis ata young age, later on I fell in love with Phantom of the Opera and forever will be my top of the list favorite. Can't describe it but you described it in the video perfectly and I love it. As it comes to a close, I sadly have never seen a live production of it even if they once had performed at my country. But I'll cherish the production at Royal Albert Hall with my whole heart 😭
and Love Never Dies, it's kinda decent for me and I especially love the Australian production. I agree with it being like a fanfiction because no matter how I love the story, I can't connect it to Phantom of the Opera. It's not a sequel, it's like it's own stand-alone musical fanfic. The beginning of PTO shows Raoul as an old man in 1919 but in Love Never Dies, they're somehow half their actual ages and sets sail for Coney Island in 1920s, which just messes up the timeline.
I appreciate you watching the video! Absolute love phantom. Cannot say the same for love never dies, but hoping a version of the show can make it your way!
I saw the Oklahoma revival in London and I think it helped a lot that it was a round staging and I was practically next to the cast, which made it a more interesting experience. The cast also seem to generally have been better at enunciation than what you made experience out to be. I think this particular staging depends a lot on the cast, though, and I’ve heard some stuff about the touring cast.... Anyhow I found it a really enjoyable production even if I didn’t necessarily love everything Daniel Fish did with the production. The alt- country style instrumentals were a pretty cool riff on the original orchestrations too. And re: JCS 1973, I feel the director was trying to pull Lawrence of Arabia long takes -- and while I can technically see similarities between that story and JCS, I agree that it isn't effective at all haha
This is such nice commentary! I’ve that seeing a show closer to the actors has been such a game changer. The first time I saw hadestown was on tour I was in the nosebleeds in Philly and enjoyed it but when I saw it in NY with great seats it became one of my favorites. I’d be hard pressed to see the show again given most of my complaints were with the characters and plot, but it could be a better experience if they would enunciate! JCS is incredible with the right stage cast, but the long takes kill me
The soundtrack has been so helpful to catch all the words for the show! My tiny brain could only process so much my first viewing since I didn't listen to anything before seeing it

I love the 2012 version of JCS. The cast was amazing especially Tim Minchin and Ben Forster. I thought Ben hit the high notes extremely well, especially in Gethsemane, That is a brilliant song.
Definitely loved that you enjoyed the cast! I think its modern production was super clever, especially King Herod's song. I think Tim Minchin's acting as Judas is unrivaled! I think I prefer some other actors who have played the role just because of their voices. Wasn't a fan of Ben Forster personally, but I'm glad that you had enjoyed it! Definitely is an excellent show
