Actually those "7" doctors are a part of the "team". Most especially if its a hospital attached to a medical school. The consultant has resident doctors and medical students with him/her
THANK YOU! We in America keep hearing about this FANTASTIC health coverage in Canada and I have always wondered if it's all that. Now let's watch this insight from you.
Hey it makes you want to say thank God for thsi crazy country, I am disable and my insurance cover everything. PT, Dental, Vision Wear, I can go to CVS and get free stuff from my Insurance,
Neze, lovely that you covered Canadian healthcare. You have to be in massively intense pain to see a doctor at hospital emergency right away. Once they assess you and you are calm and dignified when hurting like hell, you will wait for hours. Moan and groan in pain, bawl and holler loud and you will get through faster. The Canadian government funded health service has changed drastically over the past 24 years as compared to pre 2000s. Places like the Greater Toronto Area are densely populated now so demand on system increases. 🍁 Healthcare is funded through taxation etc., and less is covered these days. In Toronto, I normally go to my family doctor who is based in a clinic (medical centre) that offers specialists in multiple areas and hospital referrals so it is easy enough to get an appointment for a specialist. Unless there's an emergency and the primary care doctor has been called away, it is walk in walk out once you have an appointment and waiting beyond ones appointment is rare. Drugs, physiotherapist, dentist, etc., are not covered unless you are on welfare, some disability, etc. and getting benefits from province or government. The biggest take away is that even if you are hospitalized in 🍁 and you have health coverage in your province as permanent resident, citizen, legal worker or student, at minimum you get a standard ward (4 beds to a ward) and free care and medical or surgical treatment - private and semi-private accommodation is on own insurance or you upgrade out of pocket. I am not sure there are private hospitals in 🍁 where you can walk in and get treated right away if you pay independently. In 🇯🇲 if you have your own money, you can access any and every care right away privately. Government hospital beds are limited. In fact, in some private clinics and small hospitals medical tourism is growing. In 🇯🇲, once I make an appointment at the private facility, I can get a mammogram and results within the hour. Appointments for specialist in our government hospitals take forever. A patient can wait an entire year to see a,specialist and that has not changed in the past 40 years. For diseases like cancer, in 🇯🇲 you cannot find an oncologist who specializes in cancer in one specific body area. They do all areas of the body which is scary (no cancer hospital as yet - just beds with medicine or whatever unit within hospital) and patients can die waiting. Neze, money and lots of it or very good insurance is mandatory for Healthcare wherever we reside. Lots of accessible hospitals in nearby US border states if one can pay privately. If you cannot wait around for treatment in 🍁, and can afford it, just fly out to your home country or elsewhere and pay out of pocket to get treatment and be rid of the stress. I go to a family doctor here in 🇯🇲 and ask for tests requisition to be done and I go see specialist in a private clinic or hospital if I need to. I could not get used to making appointment thru primary care doctor to see specialist in 🍁, but they are very thorough in their investigations. Relatives in GTA inform me health care got worse since the pandemic. Developing and Underdeveloped countries fared better during and after COVID-19 as their hospitals withstood the stress whilst not so in 1st World!! Family medical history is very important to doctors in 🍁 so diabetes, arthritis, cancer, etc., in family are worth disclosing although we tend to be so secretive about our health journey. I love my primary care doctor and his team in Toronto 🍁 as they genuinely takes time out to speak to me as a person and rarely prescribes medications for quick fix lifestyle issues as compared to 🇯🇲 where some doctors are quick to prescribe meds without asking for blood work and other test to be done first - they just go by symptoms you say you are experiencing. Several private health centres have invested heavily in state of the art equipment and Miami is just 2 hours away should one have the required US$s and care to fly out. Wherever we reside, we just have to strive to maintain our own good health otherwise as the saying goes "dog eat your supper". Stay healthy and keep your options open with private medical insurance if at all possible. Always be your best advocate for your own health. Blessings to you and family at Eastertime and beyond.
I have lived in the USA and I am now in Canada. In the USA you pay for each visit but in Canada we do not. You should also mention Patients Bill of Rights and how and when to use it. I am the author of How I Conquered Breast Cancer Without Chemotherapy: My Journey from a Mess to a Message {medical disclaimer included}
Liken Canadian health system to visiting a general or teaching hospital in Nigeria. Same long wait times, as its govt funded. One can use walk-in or urgent care clinics if in a pinch when the family dr has no availability. In Calgary, Calgary Foothills primary care network can be used to find family drs accepting new clients.
Thanks for this huge info Barr Neze, you made Canadian basic lifestyles and current trends handy. God bless you and family richly. Enjoy ur Calgary Alberta. Am coming soon.
It's not totally free though, where I live. But the system is very good and yes a bit of a waiting list, it depends on the situation. I wouldn't want more than I have here I am very grateful to God for it
When one is in the hospital in Canada each attending physician has medical students and residents with them that makes it appear that you have several doctors at the same time. If the condition is outside the specialty of the attending physician the patient gets referred to the appropriate specialist in house. In Canada one is encouraged to seek care from one’s family physician and only visit the hospital four urgent or emergent care. If one goes to hospital for a non urgent or emergent condition then one will wait hours before been seen.
Neze Living in USA 🇺🇸 for 10 years has taught me that not all sicknesses or health issues need to be addressed by a doctor. Also how to take a job based on health benefits. My husband’s employee health insurance gives us more including Visa card to pay out of pocket.
Doctor's offices are not classified as hospitals. They are and are called Medical Clinics. Some Family Physicians have hospital privileges and do work in hospitals. For illnesses beyond the scope of your family physician they will refer you to a Specialist most of whom work in hospitals. And after the treatment you return to your Family Physician who is your Primary care giver. In Canada you only go to a hospital by referral. The only time you go direct to a Hospital is in an Emergency situations. When there is a life threatening issue that can't wait for your Family Physician.
Wait times - the emergency rooms gives attention to severe cases making other non life threatening cases wait. As the saying goes, if it bleeds it leads. Google an urgent care center near you next time. You’ll be processed much faster than at an ER. Same day surgery - unless you came in on a stretcher, or your case is deemed a life threatening emergency, patients have to get clearance from a cardiologist, and other applicable specialist to be cleared to undergo surgery. This can take time as you wait for the next available appointment from each specialist. This is usually mandated by he health insurance companies, and if not adhered to, the hospital or doctor may not get paid for that service and they may in turn bill the patient. Also, the clearance for surgery reduces the likelihood of malpractice medical lawsuit.
Neze, one of my kids, was having boils and was prescribed antibiotics almost weekly. If A didn't work, they would change to B. I mean for months 😢 .The simple cause was overheat😮.I took this child to the highest hospital/doctors to no avail . In 9ja, do we really have a qualified laboratory? Oyibo dey try nne. I once asked our family doctor to write antibiotics for me😂guess what she answered 😂😂 9ja is far behind abeg😮.more updates. LG
Oh yea! 😀 No prescription of anti-biotics anyhow here and guess what, all the things my kids got drowned in anti-biotics for back home dissapeared on their own without any medication! Many of them are viral.
I miss that part of being attended to immediately in Nigeria. Here as long as an ambulance didnt take you,you can stay up to 6 to 7 hours before being attended to.i saw wehhhnn one time. It's so good to see that you pay taxes here and they are well utilised. We also buy some drugs but some like BP drugs are given for free.
Actually, even if you call the premedic (ambulance) you still have to wait once you get to the emergency room. I called 911 for ambulance and I had to wait for an hour before they come to my place. Once I got to the hospital, I still had to wait for over 10 hours to see a specialist. They were MANY people at the emergency also waiting. I live in a wealthy suburbs and a good neighborhood....so it really doesn't matter the background of that person. The healthcare system in Canada is not good.
Its true what you have said about waiting if your case isnt an emergency that can lead to death my brither and his family stay in Vancouver but he said Africa is way better when you arrive they work on you but in Canada you can even wait for upto 6 or 4 hours when your not attended to just because your sickness isnt an emergency that can lead to death 😂 so movies just lie to us they dont tell us even my sister inlaw was bledding in her 7 month pregnancy but they took hours before they could work her until she ended up having a premature because the medical staff saw that her bleeding wasnt an emergency that coukd lead to death then another thing is that most medicines are cheap in canada than in USA some lady always flies to Canada to buy insulin and medicines for her diabetes becuase apparently in USA they are expensive
Yes, you’re correct. Neze was erroneously saying find a hospital instead of saying family doctor’s office. Nobody is assigned a hospital or you can’t “find a family hospital”. Hospitals are there to address serious and acute medical issues. You don’t attend a hospital for a check up or for everyday illnesses. 😊
NEZEL, it’s every country! You have to have a job to have a health insurance and job with different insurance benefits. So the first thing you should have in mind is ( full insurance coverage) and you have to declare it at the end of the year. It’s not fun and nothing is free!
If you have a private health insurance that you pay for every month, you can get your surgery done ASAP once you have been with them for a min of 12 months. But this insurance is expensive
Regarding admissions, the aim of minimising admissions is based on (1) shortage of beds, (2) cost of admissions and (3) reducing the risk of hospital acquired infections. As for emergency care in a hospital the triage system ensures that the most urgent cases are seen first. Remember, the waiting room may not look full but there are patients who come in by ambulance that don’t sit in the waiting room. Emergency hospitals have peak and off peak periods. Fri-Sun tend to be extremely busy especially at night. It really matters what time of day you go. The same due diligence parents conduct when choosing schools for kids must be applied to the healthcare system. Healthcare is convoluted, complex and has built in inequities. Because healthcare experiences are highly personal it’s advisable to do thorough research Great observations sis’
