We opened for Marty and the band in 2013 outside of Atlanta. I was playing a ‘54 strat and Kenny walked right up to me and asked to play it. One of the coolest moments of my life 😎😎
Kenny Vaughn is a true guitar God. His style and sound is like no other. He is in my top 10 greatest players of all time. He can do anything he wants country, rock , blues or whatever is required of him . A true artist.
I was at Merlefest about 15 years ago and Marty Stuart was the Featured Artist on Saturday night. I was going to head over to the auditorium early so I could get a good seat for the Midnight Jam. Before I could leave Marty came on stage and there was Cousin Kenny just tearing it up. I've never seen anything like him. I was like "who the F is this guy? Where did he come from?" It was Kenny Vaughan. Marty introduced him by saying, "and here's Kenny Vaughan in his new cowboy suit!" Kenny's picking was flashier than his suit. I LOVE his playing, and he's such a great interview. I've watched this one all the way through 3 times now. If I could play like anyone, it would be Kenny Vaughan.
For whatever reason, I was not familiar with Kenny until last Saturday, when we saw Marty and the Superlatives. I guess I had seen Kenny on video but had no idea just how much I was to appreciate his as a damn fine guitarist! A new fan here for sure!
He's a guitar store owner's best friend. Saw him play live with a guitar, a tiny amp, and one cable, he blew the doors off the place. The crowd was excited, happy, and loved it. It made me start playing the guitar the next day. I'm sure he's done that same thing to hundreds of other people.
Arrived here via Otis’ channel, btw thanks Otis for all of your stellar contributions. And a HUGE thank you to Mr Marty Stuart for making one very WISE choice, to engage with and enroll Kenny’s participation in your band, not just in the studio but out on the road for everyone to soak up his enthusiasm and prowess in all things historical and intimate involving country -jazz Nashville session work and so much more
I remember everything he is talking about, I saw Byrds doing 6 Miles High in Little Rock, 196?s I have been guitarist since 1959, now I sit in a small seniors apartment with 10 Guitars and Love Your Show! I got a ES 330 in 1966 {Grandmother's Gift} I was 14 When the Beatles hit america.
KV is the living embodiment of the Joseph Campbell adage-follow your bliss and doors will open. This is a guy who followed his dream and he is one of the top guitarist in the world today. If you follow his story from past to present, it looks like luck, if you look backwards, it was meant to be
Kenny so on point with that B-bender, I watched the Yardbirds on Shindig because of what Kenny was saying and realized I had seen it way back when I was a 10 year old, Beck was so incredible doing some of those things that Jimi would later popularize. Kenny Vaughn has been blessed in so many ways and it's great hearing your story, first in playing with some of the greatest artists in popular music and also for a career I could only dream of. I asked my father for a guitar that night the Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan, but as I was only 7 or so I would have to wait at least for a few more years. I was then was sent for accordion lessons, they were fun but they weren't a Gretsch. Looking back after all these years, instead of following my dreams I did the safe thing. I went to school and had a career of sorts doing things I really couldn't care less about. I've always done music though, both playing and writing because I find joy in it, sometimes by playing in bands and sometimes not. I'm retired now and still play, and I've gone through some Fenders, a couple of Gibsons and a Yamaha or two but funny enough, I never ever owned a Gretsch and maybe, just maybe, that's where it all went wrong!
I started learning guitar when I bought the Ventures "Walk Don't Run" Album in '63. I was 12. My Dad did what you said you did, he took the safe route and worked a job he hated for 20 years. I followed my dream because I couldn't NOT do it, ya know. I made my living playing Music for most of 55 years. With various Bands I opened for The Allman Bros., Ricky Nelson, The Judds, Ronnie Milsap, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Maria Muldaur, and I played with John McEuen and Jimmy Ibottson of the Dirt Band, sang with Rodney Crowell, worked with and met a whole bunch more. I've written & recorded 38 Albums on which I play every instrument, but that's all over now, and here I am at 72 and looking back at it all, I have as many regrets as anybody. I guess I'm just sharing that with you because your story saddened me and made me think of my Dad. We all do whatever we do in our lives and look for some "Happiness" along the way. Everything I just told you about did NOT make me happy. I'm trying to encourage you to do what you love NOW. If playing and writing makes you happy... Do it! I don't play out much any more, but I write and record all the time, and that makes me happy. I've got Music that no one will ever hear, but I keep writing it. I hope you get my meaning here. You said, "Maybe, that's where it all went wrong." But maybe, just maybe, it went just how it was supposed to.
I’m playing a gig in a motel lounge the Friday night before I was to go setup and run sound for a festival. I wasn’t all that familiar with Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives. There was a guy sitting and watching us play all night. The next day as I was wiring up the console at FOH and the guy that was in the lounge comes up to me and asks if we are going to be playing again that Saturday night down at the lounge. I said no and we talked for a while and then later that day when the festival headliner ( Marty Stuart) came on, there was that guy from the lounge ripping it up in Marty’s band. I became a Kenny Vaughan fan immediately. Hey Zac, I understand your first lounge gig was at the Holiday Inn in Rawlins WY. I was probably eating in the restaurant while you were playing there.
By far one of my top 3 & i don’t need 2 fingers … Kenny is a savant of Jazz 50s rockabilly 60s surf music the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the best of what could be called country music before it lost its soul … I could watch this from the beginning to end again easy he’s so unpretentious an interesting thank you so much for featuring him and his journey Love it 👍🎸🤠
From listening to Kenny tell stories on Otis Gibb's channel I've realized I could listen to Kenny tell stories all day. Plus.... he's such a gifted musician you can't watch him play without being inspired to pick up the guitar and keep tryin' to learn something new (and I've been playing for 50 years)
Great interview. Kenny is such a great musician. Had a laugh with him and Marty Stuart and the rest of the band after a concert in Nashville Arkansas several years ago. We laughed about how after the Marty Stuart show on RFD channel a show would come on right after it called “Big Joe’s Polka Show”🎵😂
i dont even PLAY guitar, but its so interesting to listen to ANY artist talk about their craft,a writer, a painter, a musician, you cant help but pick up the passion, the IDEA of it,how deep inside it they ARE,we learn whats INVOLVED in being good at it, and kenny is not just a superior, fantastic musician, but a generally nice person, and able to articulate it . we are ALL tired, im sure, of self centered people only aiming for fame and stardom, this guy is an artist living for the craft, and im so glad he is being rewarded for it in accolades AND monetarily ( i HOPE! )
Hell of a picker, and a great story teller, really enjoy him on Otis's podcast.I was fortunate enough to see him with, Marty's party, several Moons ago, great show!
Fantastic interview! Been a fan of Kenny's ever since I saw him playing with Lucinda Williams on the "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road" tour. One of the best shows ever.
Hey Kenny, I’ve become such a fan here of late of your great tele style and taste... Thanks so much for all you’ve done to peak my interest and playing style...😊
There were at least three moments where I could swear Kenny was going to launch into a Steely Dan tune; dude's a beast and a great character. His range of influences & tone and detailed recall are phenomenal
He is an absolute humble genius, no ego and incredibly talented. The way he talks about his dad, sounds like he had a fantastic upbringing. Wonderful man.
Ive been recording the Marty Stewart show every week for months just to document the great guests and of course the Fab Superlatives. Kenny blows my mind every show with. his taste, tone, and effortless appearing playing. He makes it look so easy! Their latest album, WayOut West, is a great sounding album, with killer harmonies. Well done, Zac, I feel like Im sitting across the room from y'all. thank you, Kenny, it was nice to meet ya!
Kenny is one of my favorite guitarist, love all the same genres of music he plays, one of the most down home, and unpretentious, celebrities I ever hope to meet.
I got my pic taken with this cool cat after a Marty Stuart show. What a sweet guy. Seeing him and Marty play in Napa this Saturday. What great timing that you put this out before the show! Thanks Zac!
Good God! I’m 64 and I took my first guitar lesson at 12 yrs old. I was already a clarinet player and read music at that time. I learned sooo much about EVERYTHING during this conversation! Zac - you did great, buddy! Talk about “leaving space” - excellent interview skills! I did a radio show for a public broadcaster in Canada, for five years! “The Blues Never Die” on 94.9FM. I did an interview every week - from James Cotton to Mick Jones - interviews are super tough (I did my own editing, and they’re still super tough to get a good one!) This True Tone session was a “just roll tape” right from the beginning ! Magic! Peace
Totally agree… in fact, bring on the whole band, and do a few episodes. We’d all be waiting impatiently for the next one. I’d love to have dinner with these guys, just because their talent and experience is definitely matched by their lack of drama and pretension.
Thoroughly enjoyed this interview. For as long as I've been familiar with Kenny's work, I've been an admirer. He pretty much ran down several of the figures of my own musical education. Homer & Jethro were hard-core jazz dudes. I love Frisell's understatement. Watching him play is an experience. Love Kenny's eclectic tastes.
Zac is the best interviewer around. He knows all the inside stuff and his questions take the conversation to all the right places. Kenny Vaughn and Marty Stuart are my favorite country guitar players. Bill Frisell my favorite jazz guitarist. Tom Petty and Mike Campbell rank high on my all time list. James Burton one of my favorite OG guitar players. All these and more were discussed in the interview so I could not have asked for more. 👍🏻
Kenny is definitely a product of-- what I can gather from this great interview--his parents. He described them as true intellectuals passing as hillbillies to fit in. I loved that description as it gives the fan a window into who KV is and what made him the personable & talented sweetheart he is. I mean everyone who auditioned him or even just briefly played with him --ended up taking him on tour! 🤩 If you've never seen Marty & the Superlatives... check them out ASAP😂
Hey Zac, you knocked it out of the park on this one brother. You and Kenny had a wonderful back-and-forth and everything that I thought you should’ve asked, you did. Thank you for the wonderful insight into one of my fave guitar players. Keep up the good work bud!
Watching again. Not only is Vaughan amazing, but I have to give Zac credit for letting Kenny talk while he covers Paisley guitars an “benders”. Great interviewing skills.
The most natural and informative interview I have seen in many years of watching TH-cam. It felt like you were in the room just hanging out! Thank you Kenny and Truetone
So nice to see Cousin Kenny hold forth on his career in another well-conducted interview by Zac. Perfect way to start the show with Ambient Country. That Marty Stuart WAY OUT WEST album explores a dimension of L.A. to S..F. '60s psychedelia that makes perfect sense: After all, the blackface Fender amps had onboard tremolo AND reverb; precursors to the current Modulation Scare. Yup, I have Cousin Kenny's solo album and I'm hoping that on his next one he will further explore the sonic river that connects Country, Surf, and Psychedelic: Acid Country, as it were. Thank you gentlemen; great job.
Kenny, without a doubt ,is such an easy going guy who never forgot his roots and has time of day for people. He has a musical knowledge that is absolutely amazing across the whole spectrum an absolute joy to listen too.
Played bass with Kenny Vaughn with a Country Artist named George Ducas around Nashville in the early 90's...one gig at The Sutler, we were supposed to go on at 8pm...Kenny never called, and just showed up at nearly 10...said he was doing a session, and well...some things apparently just cannot be rushed...and Kenny Vaughn is one of those things...always worth the wait...
Wow, Kenny has a rare charisma about him where he could read the phone book and make it sound interesting. One of my favorite guitar players and a very cool cat! Zak always does a wonderful job asking relevant questions. So thankful for this opportunity, thank you!
saw kenny with marty and the superlatives feb 29 2020 in CT right before covid blew up they were incredible. just incredible glad i got to experience their music with them oh yea, and marty played that original b bender tele too that night quite possibly the best live show Ive ever seen-heard they werr taking requests from the audience and just were killing it kenny has that TONE
That was just terrific. I first met Kenny in Denver, Colorado when my punk rock band from Laramie played with his rockabilly band The Jonny III and the Suicide Commandos from Minneapolis (in '77?). Kenny really was the first guy I saw playing an "old guitar" on purpose and I had never seen anybody keep a Stratocaster in tune like he could. Loved all gear stuff and thanks Kenny for showing us your Burton lick! Thank you Zak.
Love the James Burton story! Got to play a couple of songs with him sitting in at an industry event in Nashville and same thing happened...other guitar player besides me, Mike Aquino, is a monster, and James walked onstage with his signature tele, two cables, a Boss digital delay, plugged into a SIR backline Bassman reissue (which he dimed) and then played a solo that blew our minds, including one lick that was from freaking outerspace that he had certainly never played before on any recordings and that made me and Mike drop our jaws and pretty much stop playing mid-song and stare at each other and just laugh.
What a treat! Kenny Vaughan is exactly as Marty Stuart said (in his Musicians Hall of Fame interview) of all the Superlatives: both 'a student and a professor' of music. His playing is a joy, deeply rooted, yet open to learning from others. His enthusiasm, as a fan of other great guitarists, is delightful to hear. A cracking interview! Loved the James Burton story, especially!
I'm about the same age as Kenny, so I can relate to his stories. He seems like a regular, down to earth, non-egomaniacal, musician, and great guitar player. There are so many great guitar players now, but not many of them are compelling to me on a musical level, often their fretboard pyrotechnics become boring. Kenny is a musician, who keeps it musical and fun, the kind of music I love. Thanks for featuring Mr. Kenny Vaughan (with a last name like that, you'd better be good...probably hears that all the time). Cheers!!
This was so great, thank you Zac and Kenny! There is a lot of gold to be mined from this interview. I would love to see Chris Scruggs and Richard Bennett interviewed at some point. The Truetone lounge is becoming an important reference library for those of us that have the sickness.
what a great interview, really didn't know about Kenny but he seems like a very modest but hugely talented player. Great interviewer too. Thank you to all involved.
I discovered Kenny late by watching The Marty Stuart Show. I think Kenny’s love for The Ventures has never left him…he drips with surf tone and yet, isa true hillbilly guitar slinger. Long live ‘the Cuz!’
Thanks Zac & Truetone! I said the first time I saw McGuinn on Marty Stuart, I said that's the band that I would love to see McGuinn with. And I did get to see the show in Atlanta.
I remember Kenny whenever we were playing the country bar's in Denver, nice kid still is.
Herman's hideaway, too
74 year old kid.
@@skaz777Nah, he’s only a whippersnapper! 70 or 71! 😂
We opened for Marty and the band in 2013 outside of Atlanta. I was playing a ‘54 strat and Kenny walked right up to me and asked to play it. One of the coolest moments of my life 😎😎
That’s awesome!
Which band ???... I'm an Athens/ Madison County GA boy...
Still Playing out?
Y’all ever play with Drivin N Cryin?
I can see him doing that.
I love that piece!❤
Kenny Vaughn is a true guitar God. His style and sound is like no other. He is in my top 10 greatest players of all time. He can do anything he wants country, rock , blues or whatever is required of him . A true artist.
Played with some Alright people TOO...

What I love about his playing is he isn’t super flashy but is just a monster player
Is James Burton and Albert Lee on that list?
Who are the other 9? 🎸
Kenny Vaughan is a national treasure.
Totally wrong!!! Kenny is an international treasure;-)
greetings from Europe, just love this guys playing and chill attitude.
He’s an inspiration to all. No ego whatsoever and talented beyond belief
Get him into the Halls of Fame!!!🎶🎶🎶🎶
For whatever reason, I was not familiar with Kenny until last Saturday, when we saw Marty and the Superlatives. I guess I had seen Kenny on video but had no idea just how much I was to appreciate his as a damn fine guitarist! A new fan here for sure!
Kenny Vaughn is one of those guitarist that I could never get tired of listening to. Tasteful and delicious tones.
Marty Stuart hit the Lottery Big Time in Meeting Kenny Vaughan!!! Such a Great Guitarist!!! 😺
Kenny Vaughan complimenting every other guitarist. Does he realize how amazingly talented he is ?
Humble genius
I have never once heard Kenny miss a lick, ever!
He's a guitar store owner's best friend. Saw him play live with a guitar, a tiny amp, and one cable, he blew the doors off the place. The crowd was excited, happy, and loved it. It made me start playing the guitar the next day. I'm sure he's done that same thing to hundreds of other people.
Yeah. Heard him do that many times in 1976 in Littleton, Colo. Great musical memories of him back then.
Awesome.. thanks for sharing
Good story.
The "B" bender is sweet!
Arrived here via Otis’ channel, btw thanks Otis for all of your stellar contributions. And a HUGE thank you to Mr Marty Stuart for making one very WISE choice, to engage with and enroll Kenny’s participation in your band, not just in the studio but out on the road for everyone to soak up his enthusiasm and prowess in all things historical and intimate involving country -jazz Nashville session work and so much more
This could’ve been a 4 day long video and I would have listened to every second of it.
Kenny is such a down to earth guitar hero.
Same here, he is charismatic, articulate and seems like such a wonderful person. Very interesting man.
Zac is such a great interviewer. He’s totally prepared and asks the right questions at the right time. Great job!
And he lets his guest talk as much or as little as the guest wants to. What a cool conversation to share with all of us!
💯
Kenny is the man! Love Sweethearts ❤! And 7
Zac enjoys talking to Kenny, that is apparent, which makes it enjoyable for those watching.
Kenny is just one cool cat! He's the kinda guy you could listen to his playing all night or just listen to him tell stories.....
What a great evening's entertainment and what a nice man is Kenny Vaughan
Cousin Kenny is about as authentic as it gets. He is what every kid with a guitar dreams of being like when they grow up 🤘
Can't ever get enough of Kenny's intro guitar work...!!
Playing good second fiddle when you are a capable front man shows a love of music over love of self. Rare and admirable quality. Good show.
That's what I thought real musicians did, live that music and love it so you play for the music !? 🤷♀️
Kenny and Marty are two peas in a pod.....their collective talent together is as good as it gets in any era.
Kenny Vaughan is a total pro, a musician’s musician. Great player, versatile, knowledgeable, and humble. What more could an artist ask for?
This should be getting over a million views. Kenny is the most skillful and interesting musician.
I saw Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives last night. Such a great show. Kenny blew me away!
I've met Keeny and he is one of the most down to earth people you will ever meet. Great guy and legend.

just a beautiful and inspiring comment. Nothing but admiration for you. Well done , totally inspiring. my mind is made up. Thank you so much
Kenny can do no wrong, the nicest guy, authentic, and he can play. Loved this rendition of his tune Mysterium from his 2011 release, V. The coolest.

It's not every day I watch a one and a half hour youtube video but today I very happily did. What a lovely guy. ✔
My favorite kind of musician: total badass but approaches the music with humility and deference. And a great storyteller to boot!
So beautiful Kenny! You played on many of my sessions in the 90s n 2000s thank you sir!!
guests having a favorite guitar on their laps equal comfortable interviews
From listening to Kenny tell stories on Otis Gibb's channel I've realized I could listen to Kenny tell stories all day.

I've watched this interview several times. For guitar players it's like eating dessert for an hour and a half. Love Kenny-good job Zak!
This is the best demo ever for the Strymon Volante, and that was not even the intended focus of this video!

Hey Kenny, I’ve become such a fan here of late of your great tele style and taste... Thanks so much for all you’ve done to peak my interest and playing style...😊
That silver bender tele sounds killer with Cousin Kenny’s chops. Fantastic watch as Kenny is just a class act.
I love Kenny! There are not enough fabulous superlatives to frame his greatness properly!
Kenny’s virtuosity is mind boggling! By far my favorite guitarist! 🎸
There were at least three moments where I could swear Kenny was going to launch into a Steely Dan tune; dude's a beast and a great character. His range of influences & tone and detailed recall are phenomenal
Not a bad word about anyone, nothing but gratitude and compliments for everyone he’s played with!
He is an absolute humble genius, no ego and incredibly talented. The way he talks about his dad, sounds like he had a fantastic upbringing. Wonderful man.

Thanks for a great interview with one of the best guitarists out there. Love his work with Lucinda and Marty.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Kenny is one of my favorite guitarist, love all the same genres of music he plays, one of the most down home, and unpretentious, celebrities I ever hope to meet.
Love how honest he was about the Patty gig and how the label changed her style.
I think Kenny Vaughn is one of THE best. I just love his style and taste.
The importance of the paper route, for aspiring musicians, in the mid 60's cannot be overstated.
I got my pic taken with this cool cat after a Marty Stuart show. What a sweet guy. Seeing him and Marty play in Napa this Saturday. What great timing that you put this out before the show! Thanks Zac!

Such masterful playing. A true talent. Thanks for the video.
Ein wirklich tolles, entspanntes Interview! Kenny Vaughan ist ein so wahnsinnig guter Gitarrenspieler!
Kenny is a great player, very interesting and a neat guy. Marty struck the mother load of guitar players when he enlisted Kenny, one of my favourites.
THANK YOU!!!! Zac
Great show Zac,Kenny seems very humble especially in praising other guitarists.
Love these interviews! Kenny Vaughn is incredible.
Awesome! Thank you Zac… Marty Stuart next please!!
This is pure gold. Thanks Zac and Kenny. 🙏
He's played with so many great players and they all recognized his talent. What a life!
Great interview! And any time Johnny Guitar Watson comes up in conversation, it just makes me happy.
That intro song was absolutely beautiful... finesse is a skill you learn only by playing.
what was that song?
Can't express how awesome this is. I'm a HUGE fan of Marty and Kenny. Thank you so much!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Just wonderful to listen to and a real treat to witness Kenny playing. This is the other Vaughn everybody should know about. Thx.
Completely agree
Very good interview. Some good questions asked with intriguing answers and the interviewee is allowed to talk. Thank you.
Hey Zac, you knocked it out of the park on this one brother. You and Kenny had a wonderful back-and-forth and everything that I thought you should’ve asked, you did. Thank you for the wonderful insight into one of my fave guitar players. Keep up the good work bud!
I appreciate that!
Wow so interesting Kenny is Kool!
Him and Marty Stuart are a great pair! Love that show!
Absolute legend! So versatile can play anything.
Have seen Kenny several times, he is a killer! Great player!
Only aware of Kenny the last year or two… Always a pleasure..!🙏🏻
Finally we get my friend Kenny Vaughan this show
How are you gonna top this Zac ????? Watched every show, but ya gotta love cousin Kenny.
Elvis
Wow, Kenny has a rare charisma about him where he could read the phone book and make it sound interesting. One of my favorite guitar players and a very cool cat! Zak always does a wonderful job asking relevant questions. So thankful for this opportunity, thank you!
He is just wonderful
Kenny V. is such great player! Thanks Truetone!

they werr taking requests from the audience and just were killing it
kenny has that TONE
This guy is a gem. And he knows all of it
That was just terrific.
You are so welcome!
A punk rock band from Laramie? Wow! Those were few and far between I bet! Lol!
Winters in Wyoming will make you want to tear something up for sure! Lol!
I saw him playing with his Trio outside of a Titans game a few years ago. I haven't been the same since.
Cheers!!
Kenny’s the coolest cat ever😎
This was so great, thank you Zac and Kenny! There is a lot of gold to be mined from this interview. I would love to see Chris Scruggs and Richard Bennett interviewed at some point. The Truetone lounge is becoming an important reference library for those of us that have the sickness.
He did a Chris Scruggs interview. It is excellent as are all Zac's interviews.
what a great interview, really didn't know about Kenny but he seems like a very modest but hugely talented player. Great interviewer too. Thank you to all involved.
One of the best guitar player that ever lived.
