    For those lost at @1:38:19 where he has a New Material. For some reason he skipped a step. Here is what to do. 1. locate the thin bar that is between the view of the sword, and the view of the nodes graph area below 2. locate the middle of the separating bar, where it says "slot 1" 3. it probably says "Checkers" if you have been following along 4. click the X button to the right of the material name to delete the checkered material 5. now you have a button there to create a new material called "+ New" click this. 6. He names it "Blade" so you can name yours "Blade" also. Now you are caught up with where he starts.

    For those who can't apply bevel modifier: you probably have duplicated vertices.
    To Remove Doubles: In Edit mode, select everything. Go to the menu in the top left corner of the viewport. and hit Mesh > Clean Up > Merge by Distance. This will remove any duplicated vertices.
    It usually happens when you extrude a face, then cancel with the right-click. Right click only cancels the moving of the faces, not the creation itself. For that you also have to press ctrl+z.

    Downloaded and installed the lazy viewport addon. I have to wonder why Blender didn't do it this way from the start. Thanks for that handy tool! I have played around with Blender for quite a while off and on, but gave up on it out of frustration with tutorials that assume prior knowledge of the program, or fly through stuff so fast you can barely follow along. This series is much better.

  • @AlexanderKusters
    @AlexanderKusters 3 ปีที่แล้ว +94

    First of all: Great content. Really easy to follow along.
    Secondly I just wanted to mention a little issue I had with the UV on the blade. After following all the steps the checkers material was still warped and my UV display was only showing one side of the blade.
    After spending an hour trying to correct it by trying different things I decided to just rebuild the blade from scratch and try again. This came out with the same results. This time however I was like, huh, only 1 UV side for the blade isn't how it's supposed to be. So I right-clicked my UV-thing-ma-bob and saw the option "Mirror X", I wondered what that would do so I clicked it and that basically fixed my UV map.
    Thought this could be usefull to someone in the future.
    Thanks again for all the amazing content!

    I've been putting off learning Blender for years, but this was great. My biggest stumbling block as a Sketchup user was hitting 'O' to orbit around which made individual move/scale operations affect the entire object. Oh, and I spent an hour backtracking to make the blade geometry look the same as it does in the 'Shader' section near the end of the video. The groove that's modelled step-by-step looks very different.

    Hi all, if you are having issues at approx 37.30 mins where you add the subdivision modifier to the guard and it becomes a curved shape rather than the squared shape in the video. it's because of the limit method angle on your bevel modifier. I found reducing it to 58% rather than 60% solved the issue. Basically when extruding and moving the face you may end up with a slightly different angles to that in the video so the limit method needs to be adjusted to compensate. Took me a little time to work out so hope this helps others having the same issue.

The fact that he repeats many things like having the factor of the loop cut that must be at zero even though that was automated helps us remember for our own projects in the future. For anyone struggling with the rune letters "leaking"/"bleeding" out of your groove, the issue is you need to add more loop cuts to the blade. To make it really easy to see what's happening, make your blade a simple material that is base color blue and the groove of the blade a simple material base color yellow. Have your bevel and subdivision modifiers visible in edit mode and enter edit mode in the normal Layout view. You'll immediately see the colors are weird and reflect your bleeding problem. Make a new loop cut along each geometry edge of the blade and groove (start at top of groove since this is the biggest problem area) and you'll slowly see the color edges improve. Keep going until you're happy that the yellow color is staying in the groove correctly, then go back and reassign your Blade materials. Hope this helps some people, as I was stuck for a while myself!
