    I can get behind Crono's era😂 I laughed out loud at that part. I have to say this game has me hooked. The style of this game after being shown "I stole the item on the table at the fair" had me constantly thinking about what I do, if I'm making the right decisions and what I'll be effecting throughout the rest of the game. The small little details to this game were just perfect!
    Honestly after just being shy of beating this game, I was asked what I'll do when I finish the game. And the answer might just be going back and trying to get a few of the other endings. This game is definitely a masterpiece and timeless! Thanks for the video!!

      DS version is the best. The translation done by Ted Woolsey was suitable for letting you play and understand the game, but it wasn't all that accurate. Both the DS and Steam versions have a revised script that is more accurate to the original. And that is more appreciable if you decide to play Chrono Cross since you won't be QUITE as confused by it once the game starts linking itself to its predecessor.
      The Steam version has all the bells and whistles of the DS version save for a missing FMV that was never put back in. For that reason, the DS version edges out the Steam version.
      I will say that the added reptile side quest that has you climbing a mountain and bouncing between two time periods to repeat the process isn't worth your time. I don't know who thought that nonsense up, but it adds nothing to the game narratively and the equipment you get from it, while strong, isn't necessary to take out the Dream Devourer.

    chrono trigger was such a masterpiece that the 'enhanced' versions were all inferior. even just adding an extra dungeon made the game worse by virtue of bringing the average quality down. literally the only game ever made that could not be improved. on original hardware, with a proper CRT television, remains the only truly perfect gaming experience we have ever produced. and yes, the game looked way better on a crt than any modern screen.

  • @PlutoTheSecond
    @PlutoTheSecond 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Hard disagree. I can't stand this game. Most of the characters that stand out are villains, and I hate all of them, and not for good reasons. They're evil for the sake of being evil, they're stereotypical megalomaniacs with no concern for any consequences of their actions, and they're just plain annoying. I even consider King Guardia to be a villain because he sided with one over his own daughter. There's no logic or motivation behind anything that happens, at all, in the entire story, just the thinnest possible reasoning for the sake of forwarding the plot. Unforgettable characters? I wish I could forget them.
    I hate the soundtrack too. There's only a couple of songs I could pick out and say I like them, but the rest are just as annoying as everything else. They're either bland or over the top with almost no in-between. I learned that Mitsuda actually threatened to leave Square unless he was allowed to compose the soundtrack, and I am pissed at the result. The alternative would have been, in my opinion, a much better soundtrack done by Nobuo Uematsu proper, though the soundfont would still be ass, and I can't imagine Mitsuda's career would have been that much different. There are soundtracks of his for other games that I actually like, and none of them are Square games. One of them was the first Mario Party, for crying out loud! As long as I can't forget Chrono Trigger, I can't forgive Mitsuda for making an ass of himself with its soundtrack.
    The graphics? It can eat my ass. The animations are SO janky, EVERYWHERE, ALL OVER THE PLACE, ALL THE DAMN TIME. I can't stand the sight of it.
    The themes of consequences? Any lessons the game tries to teach about morality or good behaviour, all fall flat. What am I supposed to be, an altruist? From the beginning, the first challenge is to get through the Millennial Fair without doing anything bad or making any wrong choices. Your reward is a few Ethers. Instead, I ground for Silver Points and EXP against Gato, using the meal to restore my health, so I could buy the best equipment I could get. I do not regret it, and I regret it even less considering the Chancellor is obviously corrupt and Crono's death sentence is a foregone conclusion. The LARA mini-game also sucks. It took me a dozen tries just to figure out how to do it correctly.
    The gameplay? I do like the battle system, the combos, and the positional attacks are especially impressive for the SNES. But, I actually prefer the random encounters of Final Fantasy over the on-screen encounters of Chrono Trigger, mainly because having the enemies appear on-screen doesn't make them avoidable. A lot of enemies can be spread out and yet fight with each other in the same formation, and there's no indication of where to move to avoid them, if it's even possible. Even worse, there are numerous times when enemies off-screen will slowly slide into position and you wait for several seconds before the battle can actually begin.
    I played it once. I checked out early. I couldn't make myself care. I might play it again someday, in the vain hope of finding something to prove me wrong, but I remember enough to know that it was not fun.

Obviously your opinion is probably in the minority based on having seen so many people gush about the game for so long - and that's totally cool! While I don't agree with a lot of what you've said, I respect you typing it out and bearing for all to see.
      One thing, you mentioned a brief delay before battles - the PS1 version is slightly slower for battle loading times. If you do give this game a chance again, the SNES version did not have that.

      @@ErekLadd That was the SNES version I was playing. I know a lot of the Final Fantasy games on PS1 had long load times for battles, so it doesn't surprise me that Chrono Trigger would too, but it's slow on SNES too. Not all the time, but there are plenty of battles where the positions of all the enemies take too long to set up, even on SNES, and it gets really annoying.

    Eh? Dude, no. For me Trigger was a huge letdown. Game is far from flawless.
    First of all Crono to this day is the worst protagonist I ever saw in jrpg. He is totaly irrevelant to the plot. You can switch him to a potato with a sword and nothing would change. Who is Crono? What is he like? We dont know, because there is nothing to know. He is just a empty husk. All we know is he like to kill animals and kidnap girls. 1st time I played I asumed he has to have some connection to Lavos since his hair looked like Lavos shell, but nope. To this day he is a prime example how NOT to make a silent protagonist. Sure some can say: he is ment to be blank slate, player insert. But Im not redhair. If you want protagonist with no character then do a character creation, if not, give him something like a legend, prophecy or important ansestry.
    Halfway in the game I almost eate my own words when Crono suecide in front of Lavos, I was like "oh! so he is not a protagonist, he was there so we could experience Magus story as an outsider, as he is the real protagonist of Chrono Trigger! Genius!" but nope. He came back in very dumb way and Magus become irrevelant.
    Next thing is battle system. Sure you can do unite attacks, but all spells and skills everyone learn are by leveling only. Wow, you cant change skills or bulid characters differently, they will always play the same. You can just switch them to change combine attacks and that is basically it. Except that all you can do is change equipment, but there is an optimal gear so there isnt a need to experiment with it once obtained. It felt like FF4 but with only 3 party members instand of 5.
    Also why this game has AOE attacks since YOU CANT MOVE in battlefield? All you can do is wait like a moron for enemy to walk (coz enemies can change position, you cant) into AOE area. You watch them doing Brown's movement until you finally press action. That is until you lv up to get skills that hit everyone and forget AOE spells even exist.
    I can name more things, like no real endgame challange, plot that sometimes make no sense, smallest world EVER created for a RPG (CT planet is a size of a orange), outdated graphiscs, soundeffects and even music (Yeah, I said it, sure this game has some legendary tunes like Shala's theme, but I CANT stand standard battle music, dear God what happend there?).
    I can aknowlage this games was a Big one in 1994 but dont give me this "It's a perfect game bullshit", It's not, not even close.
    It might be the most overrated game ever in my opinion.

    • @ErekLadd
      @ErekLadd  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You're looking into it too much if you're focused on the PS1 cutscenes during the conversation about art/graphics. I used that as a method to show the character art mostly because I was short on time during my edit yesterday and that was a quick way to make a visual comparison to the Dragonball series. Even so, there's nothing wrong with saying the PS1 cutscenes are timeless. Sure there might be preferred versions of the game, SNES is my go to, but I actually played the PS1 port first and those cutscenes blew me away. So in that sense, it's very much valid for me.
