Final Fantasy X literally blew my mind when it came out. It was the reason I bought a PS2 at the time instead of a Game Cube and it was my first Final Fantasy game!

10 was the last time I feel like the game "felt like" Final Fantasy. I played, at least a little bit, but truly I think the loss of Sakaguchi's voice in the following games is why they're so different. New voices telling new types of stories with their own visions, its not a bad thing, its just why 10 is such a pivot point. Not to mention now we have online games, that's sure different. I wish they didn't use mainline numbering on XI and XIV but it is what it is :)

I think that, besides the combat, 16 did a good job of feeling like final fantasy. It also felt a little game of thrones tbh, but there were great references to the series and musical motifs that returned that hadn’t been present for at least 20 years. Actually the vibe I got from 16 was things that were good about 12 but improved upon. The loss of Uematsu as the main composer definitely attributed to the subsequent games feeling less like FF, but the fact that 12 was in Ivalice still made it feel like FF to me.

I had played Legend in GB as a kid, I started on my cousins save, he was under leveled and I didn't get it, so I thought FF wasn't for me. My boss at E Games, when FF X came out, told me to buy it.

I hear you on Final Fantasy XIV... but it really is one of the best in the entire series. The story and characters are just something else. And you can play for free up to level 70 or something like that. If you can ever find it within yourself to check it out, I'd highly recommend it. Gameplay is obviously different, but XIV is definitely better in story and characters. NOTHING against X, I freakin love X. It's just XIV is so good.

I love this game and agree that it's great. That being said, I also really like 12, 14 and FF7 Remake/Rebirth (if that counts) so can't say 10 is the last great game. Biggest gripe with this game is how hard to platinum it is with that damn lightning dodging and late game grinding to fill out the Sphere Grid. Story is top notch though!

  • @travisbplank

The simple answer is yes, yes it is the last game that had the Final Fantasy feel, even if it missed the high mark of earlier entries. Thenfollowing games may be good or bad or whatever, but they are nearly unrecognizable as Final Fantasy games for me. They're just different franchises with Final Fa tasy slapped on the box. They've done this since the very early days (famously with Final Fantasy Legends), but it was usually done as a side project like Dirge of Cerberus or Crystal Chronicles. Now I feel the series has absolutely no identity and the fanbase is more about corporate loyalty than any kind of qualitative examination of the new entries. I imagine the next Final Fantasy could be a dating sim starring a middle-aged, bald guy and the fanbase would insist that "this has always been Final Fantasy" because the guy draws a chocobo while bored in a loading screen.

Yes - Peak FF is 6-10 for me!
12's story was lacking and terribly paced.
13 trilogy (I like) was too experimental - especially Lighting returns
    11 & 14 are MMO's...
15 was a mess and incomplete with DLC & season pass 2 cancelled.
16 was okay but combat was basic and game structure lacked a sense of adventure.

I prefer X. But 13 is the last great FF. It was the last time Square had the balls to go with their own vision. Yeah, it has problems, and not the greatest FF, but it was the last pure FF. The last great FF.

I have been a gamer for over 40 years. I played text games from infocom, and Ultima and Wizardy. I bought a ps and FFVII on the same day. I was hooked. I was a day one buyer of all FF main games since then. What I think X has is that it was the first FF game with voice acting. It also had the right amount of minigames. Some were fun and others were downright annoying. I am looking at you yellow birds. I replayed X/X-2 on my PS4 and PS5. I have platinum all of the main Ff games 8-16 including the X-2 and 13-2 and 13-3. While X is my favorite for story I really enjoyed the combat system is 12. I have enjoyed 15, 16, Remake and Rebirth but I have not like the evolution of the combat system. Also the amount of mini games that are required to play to get the platinum in Rebirth and the story gets lost while playing them.

I think a lot of people’s reasoning for saying that 10 is the last great FF game has a lot to do with nostalgia. Games feel different when you’re younger, especially final fantasy games and as the games evolve they’ve changed a lot since the PS1 games and X. I didn’t grow up with any FF games so I have a much different perspective then a lot of the older fans, for example I think 8 is a legitimately awful game and the OG 7 is incredibly overrated but I absolutely adore FF16.

While I certainly don't think FFX was the last "great" game in the series, I would say XII matches and exceeds it in many areas, and Tactics Advance is truly excellent, what X *is* is that last game before the release of Spirits Within, Sakaguchi's departure, and the massive shift from Squaresoft to Square Enix. It's when we stopped getting a new numbered FF game every year or so. It really was the end of an era, cliché as that may sound. FF would be great after X, but it certainly wouldn't be the same

I agree mostly with this statement but I have an analogy. In heavy metal everyone argues when Metallica sold out. Some people think it’s when they cut their hair, some people say on black album, some say when they made a music video, some even say after their first album. It’s all subjective in my opinion. I remember when FF10 came out and I had friends refuse to play it because it had voice acting and didn’t have a world map.

No, but same can be said about the older games as well, and I think it is very easy to romanticise about a time where there were almost no competitors in the west to final fantasy compared to today where there are so many great games being released. I would say that the true "black sheep" is 13 but the rest are nice 😊.

13-2 and LR had terrible story and structure, 15 was easily my least favourite ff game apart from maybe 2 considering the base release was pitiful, and while 16 had a good story the combat was too devil may final fantasy for me to get the ff vibe.
10 is probably the last top tier ff

Bonus points for pronouncing Tidus correctly.
But, everything you said is just because of nostalgia, despite your attempt to say you were not doing that. The same for all of the comments agreeing with you. I started playing Final Fantasy with 7 but 10 was probably the first one I was old enough to enjoy and beat, so I do have a lot of nostalgia for it. But I don't think it's the last great Final Fantasy. I'd say it's top 3 Final Fantasys maybe but I think 13 is the objective best game, even though my favorite is 9. But 12 was great, 15 had it's moments despite a questionable production and somewhat disappointing launch. 16 was a great jump for the series becoming a true action RPG, even if I wish the combat had more depth. Even most of the spin-offs are great. Crisis Core and the Remake series (so far) are some of my favorite Final Fantasy games. Hell, even 15 Pocket Edition was a solid mobile game.
People who don't like them are just people who won't give them a chance because it's not the same as it was when they were kids, and that's pure nostalgia blindness.

FFX wowed me when it came out, but that’s because of all it did. It was a pioneer for sure, but by the end it lost its’ luster. I actually think the story isn’t great, the characters are ok at best, and the music is alright. I didn’t mind the linearity so much, the sphere grid system, but the lack of a world map was a bummer. For me, the best thing about the game is its’ combat system. Probably one of the best in the series, but man I just don’t love this game. I wouldn't call it the last great FF game, but it was the last of their big bar raisers when it came to stand alone main game titles, if that makes sense.
Here's something you won't hear many fans say: I thought that X-2.5 the price of eternity, the episode 'The Last Mission,' and FFX - will - redeemed the ending of X-2. On its own, X-2's conclusion seemed to reverse everything X taught us, even though it was a fun game. These last entries indicate a heavy price for bringing back those who we have lost, and I thought it was appropriate to double down on X's message. An unknown but grim looking horizon for Spira, as well as Tidus and Yuna, seems more appropriate for a connected universe to VII with future when Shinra's descendants would one day make it to Gaia.
Who knows what happened in between these stories.
I think a lot of players didn't like what followed X-2 because they saw it as tearing up Tidus and Yuna, but to me, X-2's ending had been doing that.

As much as I enjoy Final Fantasy X, it's in the middle of the pack as far as my favorite FFs go. I enjoyed the exploration and sense of scale in FFXII a lot more. I also feel it's unfair that FFX gets a pass for being so linear while FFXIII is crucified for it.
The battle system and story of X are high-water marks for the franchise, no doubt, but I have loved every entry in the mainline series (non-MMO) for one reason or another, and I respectfully disagree that FFX was the last great game in the series. (I wouldn't call Lightning Returns or FFXV great games, as I find them to be incredibly flawed but enjoyable games.) Between FFVII Remake & Rebirth, as well as FFXVI, Final Fantasy is in the best place it's been in years.

I will say that 14 might have an insane time commitment but at least story wise it holds with any other Final Fantasy story as being absolutely fantastic. But on a full package level X might be the last great one. XIIs gameplay is fantastic but the story is ok at best and it has far and away the weakest soundtrack. 13 is a mess even if 13-2 is better than it has any right to be. 15 and 16 sit in an odd transition territory and both I fell will be looked at better over time. And 11 and 14 show the limits and cracks in the foundation of MMO gameplay despite strong stories in both cases.

I remember seeing the advertisements for X-2 and feeling a little insulted that the developers thought that fans of FFX really wanted to see Yuna in hot pants. I understand that her and Rikku’s new design were meant to express their maturation or whatever, but unless Yuna somehow got hair extensions, there is no believable way to explain how her hair grew long enough in two years to be braided down to her legs. And even if I overlooked all that, the idea of Yuna going from a sweet, kimono wearing Pokémon trainer, to a pop idol gun ninja was such a hard turn for me that I couldn’t take it seriously as a proper sequel. I would’ve had more respect for Square if they just called X-2 what it was-a spin-off. Instead they brought in a new character out of nowhere, and changed Yuna’s entire play style. I’m fine with her not being a summoner anymore but she was a solid spellcaster. And while her sudden weapon change makes sense as an Al Bhed, it didn’t feel justified for her to become nimble and gun proficient as though she had wanted to be that kind of character all along. It would be like seeing Cloud in Advent Children with blue hair, and a leather jacket with skinny jeans and a t-shirt, and he now wields a magic wand instead of a sword. I think it all went downhill from FFX, from their foray into “sequels” to MMOs that I had no money, time or resources to play (and I came from the StarCraft/Diablo era), and all the changes in between that no one ever asked for. And don’t get me started on the dress sphere system; just because a battle system is fun and intuitive doesn’t mean it’s good, if it’s out of place. But I still hold to this day their biggest mistake was deciding to make sequels a thing.

I remember seeing they had originally planned to make the game a prequel, and feature Braska , Aaron and Jecht, but they changed their mind when they felt like a 3 man party wasn't really "progressive" enough and planned to make a sequel instead with an all female cast. Yuna having dual pistols was inspired by Lara Croft. Seems like they didn't understand how to actually be "progressive" with it though

I believe the Squaresoft and Enix merger about a year or two post FFX’s development brought about a change in Square’s game development philosophy, from creating games with a truly artistic vision and taking risks being first in mind, to profit being the number one motive.
This was the time the original creator of Final Fantasy, Hironobu Sakaguchi, left the company. He was always adamant during his tenure that regardless of whether there was a prospect of financial success, the numbered Final Fantasy games should have no sequels, that each should have its own contained complete story. All that changed under new management after the Square Enix merger, and the games suffered for it.

For me, IX is the capstone/bookend of the franchise. The usage of voice acting adds a layer of separation that impedes my immersion and the franchise hasn't been the same since. Plus, I found my first playthrough of FF X to be a bit of a slog and didn't appreciate it more until going back and replaying it again sometime last year. Even though I find it to be a mid-tier FF game I can see that it has the elements that compose a great game so more power to you if you happen to think it's great.

    • @egocide9034

Yep, nailed it about the voice acting. I recently came to realize it's probably a large part in why I have such a strong affinity for more retro games (nostalgia aside). Noticed it while watching playthroughs of FF7 Remake/Rebirth. Among the myriad of things I dislike about them, that certain immersion and quirkiness I adore about the original was lost with the voice acting.

Nope. My hot take: the only great FF to date is probably VII. Every other one is quite flawed and often sloppily put together, and it's not necessarily a bad thing. They were very experimental and pushed the genre forward. That said, X isn't one of those. The last to be that was VIII, the trainwreck it was. X brought nothing new to the table maybe except the game being a big tube start to finish. Story was great, I agree, maybe the most innovative part. Graphics for the time were mindblowing but they don't ever make a game. Sphere grid is a terrible idea, never revisited (ok, XII did it and it was better there), visible turn order and and battle party swap was done before and are somewhat underutilized, battle UI is terrible with menus growing like cancer by the end. And I believe everything starting IX was a rehash and re-imagining of older ideas and mixing in other genre mechanics. XII was a single player MMO, XIII seems to have lived and died by its battle system (mostly died..), XV and VII:R are just action games with RPG mechanics. None of the FFs are bad, even FFII. Almost none of them lives up to greatness.

X is my all time favorite among the series, followed by Rebirth. X has so much great content going for it that its own issues are few and far between (Kimahri not an interesting character and the mini games aren’t that great either). The mainline entries after this have suffered from their own development problems that affected their overall quality (12 didn’t go further into its ideas nor developed party further but I enjoyed the combat, 13’s execution left much to be desired due to story and design choices but was visually pretty with a good score and introduced stagger system, 15 literally needed a Royal Edition to flesh out more than it’s vanilla edition and yet the story/combat couldn’t still match the dynamic of its party due to development problems, and while I definitely enjoyed 16 it has some story elements that weren’t fleshed out further as it went further and the RPG elements left much to be desired (I don’t play 14 but the fact that it had to start over again after horrible first attempt to become the best comeback in gaming says a lot).

    • @plus6749

Exactly how I feel! X is my favorite FF of all time and I'm currently playing VII Rebirth and it's already my second favorite game. I'm of the opinion that both linear and open world games can be good or bad and that one is not intrinsically better than the other. X is a very well executed linear game and VII Rebirth is a perfect mix of both concepts. XIII is flawed for sure, but I think it's massively underrated and to me it probably has the most engaging battle system in the series. People that say the game plays itself haven't played past the first few chapters. I agree it shouldn't take that long, but once all the mechanics become available, XIII's combat is sublime!

Tbh FF16 was great imo. That being said. The combat system for FF16 was decent, but left much to be desired. It had great ideas and such, but lacked the finishing touch. The best Action combat system that Square have made to date is the FF7 Rebirth system. Is it perfect? No, but it is the closest thing we got to a perfect system for the new vision they have for how combat should be in a modern FF game.
I too miss the old turnbased system they used to have. I belive that a modern FF game can still have a turnbased system and still do well in the modern gaming scene, but i also see the plus sides of having a action combat system. Tbh i would love for them to take the system from FF7 Rebirth and run with that and expand on that system for the next FF game in the series.
The story of FF16 for an example was a really great story aswell. So i do belive that the FF series can manage to capture the same magical feeling with its newer releases just as the older ones have. The thing that the newer FF games have held against them is the power of nostalgia and that is a powerfull thing to try and overcome.

FFVII remake/rebirth is absolutely amazing. Rebirth blew me away in so many ways! It’s clear this style of game is the way forward for the series and that’s ok. But I always find myself thinking back to the old turn based games from time to time.
