Have you tried overclocking the ram in this or the beelink? That would probably make a much bigger difference for performance than overclocking the gpu. Also, official drivers aren’t out for Linux or windows for the new apus yet, so once those come out this month you will likely see a big performance boost on windows. No clue when Linux will be updated.
I feel like AMD's mobile offerings are a bit behind the curve compared to where they'd usually be at the generational refresh, and this is especially apparent the lower in the product stack you go, especially with graphics being what should otherwise be last gen. Hopefully this is just a quirk in timing, and the next generation is a massive jump that is no longer behind the curve. I'd be a really bad time to start getting lazy and hand the handheld market to Intel, given how the market is growing to a point that the mainstream PC component manufacturers are taking notice, in a generation or two we could easily see a boom, especially if Steam Deck 2 provides decent competition, and this would be a terrible time for AMD to fumble things.
@@nielsdebakker3283 The combination of straw man, red herring, and false equivalence is one hell of a combination of fallacies. First let's get false equivalence out of the way, since that seems to be your main point. Intel's iGPU was never meant to be a performance chip, they literally just exist to consolidate how many chips were on a motherboard. If you have any memory of, or were even around at the time, there used to be a low-power GPU on motherboards between the eras of requiring a dGPU outright and iGPU integration. These lower-end dGPU chips still exist to some extent within the laptop market, the latest from Nvidia would be the GeForce MX chips, though I'm not sure what AMD offers for lower-end dGPU options, and I'm sure Intel will eventually have their own offerings within their newer dGPU microarches. You're arguing about an entirely different class of chipset, so yes this would be false equivalence. Now for your straw man, you completely misinterpreted the original statement, and I'm inclined to believe maliciously so just to show your fanboyism. The whole comparison of products and the 'behind the curve' statement is only inclusive to AMD's own offerings, both in current tech vs. product stack and historical tech vs. product stack. This generation of offerings is not only a mixed bag, Zen 4 + RDNA 3, Zen 3 + RDNA 3, and Zen 4 + RDNA 2, and IIRC there may be a Zen 3 + RDNA 2 chip at the bottom of the current stack, but the offerings along the product stack are falling behind the curve, see anything that isn't Zen 4 + RDNA 3 at any point along the stack. And since we want to argue handhelds, the chips handhelds receive are within the range of being behind the curve, this is what the statement was referring to, this is what you have maliciously missed to shit on Intel products with your toxic fanboyism. Then the red herring, which is pretty obvious, you took your straw man and made it entirely about your fanboyism, which is what the previous alluded to. So unless you can learn how to intelligently contribute to conversations without an assload of fallacies, I would suggest sitting out of conversations. And if you really feel the need to spew shit constantly, I suggest going back to your echochamber communities where you all wank each other to your fanboyism. In short, stfu, gtfo, and gfy. Everyone with any amount of intelligence is so utterly tired of people like you, people who really need restricted internet access due to the fact that a monkey with a typewriter can contribute more intelligently than you can.
There are too many variances to make any apples to apples comparisons. Were you even able to match the same vram limit between both Windows and SteamOS? I guess for now you should try to match the same lower TDP for both tests until linux gets better options.
Matching vram in Windows would be easier. Matching TDP (even lower TDP) would be super difficult without a Ryzen Adj update. They should be adding this generation soon now that Ally is shipping.
@@TakiUdon wish we had more lower priced options to look at. I know ROG Ally has a lower powered option coming for $599 and no one has shown what the Geek 1S is like at $699 as apposed to battery life when targeting the 720 realm. I still feel like waiting. Chimera OS is nice, i just hate how you need to connect to internet to setup. Installers should have the install files period. What happens when their servers go down or they get shut down. Then chimera goes with it.
I'm not a big fan of ChimeraOS due to the desktop being so gimped (you gotta use a the built-in web app to install thing is "dog crap") IMO. I'd just stick with HoloISO (nightly build not stable). Of course I am still waiting for a official SteamOS ISO to be released (the newer arch based.) It's not a bad little system I could easily replace the two dinky SSDs with a couple of Leven 4TB NVME SSDs for cheap (around $320 for two sticks.) and be able to fit half of my Steam Library on one, and a good chunk of other stuff on the other.
@@alkazar79 That's true on the web app (though I still say it's crap), but not being able to use BASICS like a external HD with NTFS is the main factor for using something else for me. I have a ISP with a data cap (and gigabit internet is not available in my area) so re-downloading is a no go. Using the steam wireless transfer is slow & buggy as well (especially for games that are constantly updating.) Just using a SSD to SSD transfer is faster simpler, and no hassle for me (especially when I'm transferring 2TB or more my library is currently around 8TB (12 if I installed everything.) This is why I have the opinions I do. They state this OS is for those that want a modern console experience on a PC, and it is with all the restrictions included. This one just don't click well with me.

I know this review is a little old at this point, but I just wanted to point out this is a Ryzen 9 CPU not a Ryzen 7 its up to you if that makes a difference
Honestly it's about the same performance you'd get out of a PS4, not even a Pro.. Scratch that, less than that, I've played a fair few of these on PS4, not only have they looked better, but performed better. Would like to see if there will be any performance difference later though. To be frank, you could buy a next-gen console for that price, and if you get a Series X or S, you can just throw Games Pass for a bit extra which would nearly be the same price currently. The original price however is utterly insane for the performance, you could buy a laptop that performs better for $640, hell, for $20 more a probably really nice one, so honestly if all you are getting is the form-factor, that's a hefty tax.
2800MHz*2=5600MT/s, so that 2800MHz thing makes sense for DDR5-5600. GPU is spec'ed for 3GHz. ETA Prime tried 3.25GHz and it crashed. Maybe with good cooling, it can do 3.2GHz.
Has anyone encountered data exchange problems between 2 devices connected to the USB ports? I purchased this product, it happens to me that by connecting 2 SSD devices in two ports of the mini PC, there is an incredible slowdown in data exchange. Has anyone encountered the same problem?
The future os APU. Terrible discrete GPU pricong is killing its own market while making APU alot more appealing. However, they will never be better then the APUs in consoles on purpose.
My vote for HX80G over HX99G or UM790 pro. My reasons are: - DDR5 still not completely developed for high efficiency versus speed/latency. Right now, ddr4 is enough for 1080p or even 1440p gaming. - Thunderbolt or USB4 support for external gpu needs better speed and latency in some games like shooters, so best option is an oculink adapter for m.2 slot, you could do this in hx80g too. - Performance difference between 5800H, 5900HX, 6900HX even 7940HS is very little (10%-15%) compared with price gap between these models. - Under my assumption. 7940HX for now didn't exist, and 7945HX, based on news and rumors, will be used for new mini pc with desktop gpu support. This is not interesting for me, because i'm interested in mobile gpu efficiency, and low overall consumption, that's not going to be the case.
Is it a Ryzen 9 as you mention on screen or a 7? Furthermore it ain’t a charging brick but a power brick that comes with it. 😊 *edit benchmark shows it’s a Ryzen 9.
too bad linux doesnt have something simple like windows power plan, thats normally how i do quick and easy iGPU 'overclocks', by changing the high performance power profile to not use turbo, or make a second one called game so i can have high performance with and without turbo. Alot of the time these dips are caused by the iGPU dropping in clocks to keep the total package power under a certain wattage, it would be nice if someone made a tool for linux that allows you to prioritize maintaining highest clocks on GPU, or CPU
It doesn't need power plans just tell GPU/CPU to degrade or not performance. Linux doesn't need that because it's not as aggressive with power savings and its scheduler isn't shit like Windows's. The only scheduler that would make a difference would be the CPU one, which uses schedutil or ondemand by default, you can easily change that with power-profiles-daemon on Gnome/KDE or starting the game with gamemode though. But again, that might give you a boost of 1-2 fps if any at all.
@@benign4823 if the cpu is using 15 more watts than it need from a 45w package power budget you can bet your ass youll lose more than 1-2 FPS, unless you were only getting 10-15FPS in the first place. Does linux automatically limit the CPU to allow more power to the GPU, because last time i tried, it doesnt. Sure you can manually change it, but at that point windows is easier because you have simple 1 click performance toggles, sorry, had, it used to be in the notification area now you have to click on the battery and go to more settings.
@@denvera1g1 So you wanna argue specifically for integrated GPUs. Well, since both GPU and CPU get power from the same place, I guess it would be useful to be able to restrict one part as needed depending on the bottleneck in this use case, I agree. Changing your power profiles is not an overclock though, it's just a putting on or removing a limiter. You can easily change the power profile on Linux through the GUI though depending on what you use, on Gnome or KDE go to the power settings and change it to performance/balanced/power saving. It limits the CPU, so if the GPU needs power it's free to get it, in the case of a handheld with an integrated GPU this is enough since the GPU is always the bottleneck.
@@benign4823 this was my point, instead of going through the trouble of -oberclocking- overclocking, i just limit the CPU so it can shift the power, now what i like about linux is that it is easer to customize, we can easily get a keyboard shortcut that switches the CPU power profile, but until it is built into a linux distro, like SteamOS, people will prefer the windows version I love steam OS distro it is so slick for gaming, i just wish it would support other hardware in the same way, i'd also like more control than package power target, in addition i'd like CPU and GPU power target(allowing you to choose any of the 3 to modify)
@@denvera1g1 At least on Gnome, you can change power by clicking on the upper right part of the bar and then toggle powers from there. Cause i'd get the rog ally for cheaper than this and i'd have a handheld at the same time while also being able to hook it up to my monitor or tv
I am shopping for a Minisforum Mini-PC to use for Day Trading Stocks with 4 monitors (LG 32 inch)
How does Minisforum UM790 Pro compare to Minisforum Neptune HX99G?
UM790 has a better CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS
UM790 Pro does not have a dedicated GPU, but has integrated GPU
HX99G has a dedicated AGPU: MD Radeon RX 6600M
i did this with the arm 5 ace magician and holo steam os works great installed over 60 games and plays them great mine has 16 gig of gpu for ram and 16 for os
Hello and greetings from Germany, great video, have now also bought a UM790 and am a little disappointed, unfortunately I cannot set a resolution of 5120x1440, is that with you too?
If your monitor is that resolution, it should be supported by this just like a PC. You could try using CRU to add the resolution manually.
The most powerful APU from AMD is in the Xbox Series X.
I though you had found some firmware for the Raspberry Pi Pico to make like an off brand steam controller
So,final conclusion is win10?And is it support thunderbolt egpu?
I would like to have one of these for a bartop arcade.
I tried on another board and I couldn't get it to boot. The option is missing in the BIOS that this came with.
AMD is shotgunning every competition out of the market, including themselves !
Name a intel processor with a halfway decent apu? If you name a irisxe apu I am gonna laugh real hard.

Does the BIOS allow the TDP to be set to 80-90 watts, or are you doing this through Windows somehow?
0:00 What could that Raspberry Pi Pico be foreshadowing? 🤔
Even after all the handheld reviews over the years. As for mini desktops they are not there yet for 1080p the APU Strix might be the one to wait for as for the higher TDP payoff. That may be next year though.
@@TakiUdon After looking into it some more now that I have an Ally, ryzenadj will correctly set the TDP limits, you just can't print the table to validate it yet.
Your overclock apparently runs slower than stock in ETA Prime's video, at least in Time Spy. Could it be that the 5600MHz DDR5 is bottlenecking performance to that degree?
Hey man, how are you?
I'm from Brazil and I want to test this Chimera OS.
Not just for Steam games, but for Retro consoles. I'm currently using Batocera, but I'm having difficulties with emulator settings.
Browsing the net, I found this Chimera and became interested.
About my PC Console:
CPU: Xeon E3 1270 V2
GPU: Radeon RX 580 8GB 2048SP
RAM: 16GB
HDD: 4TB
MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte GA-H61M-DS2H
Can I play retro consoles and these Steam games?
So, the Cinebench23 score was between 15,000 and 24,000????
did you get wifi card to work in chimera?
I want see something like this but with proper dedicated GDDR6 memory and DDR4/5. So steam box or steam console like box. Proper gaming box running steam os 4k/60 capable. I also want one this boxs capable running 3 monitor or Tvs. This be great for car/truck sim games.
Why valve taking so long for steam os come desktop pc? I don’t know. They said they will be showing it soon. That was 2+ yrs ago.
UM790 VS GTR7. Which to choose??🤔
Question, Have you tested Intel UHD 630 vs Radeon Vega? I'm tying to buy a cheap mini refurbished business PC, like an HP Elitedesk or a Dell Optiplex. What systems are emulate-able on a 630? I know the Radeon Vega graphics are great on the Ryzen 2400G, up to some Wii. Can the i5 7600's UHD 630 do the same, but with more CPU power?
I have i5 6500t can do 720 and 1080 wii and gamecube play most wii u games flawless ps2 in 720 and 1080 hp elitedesk g3 800
It's possible to use an external GPU build with this mini-PC? Since it has three M.2 slots
Man I need to upgrade my desktop Pc, and I was thinking of getting a mini pc to replace it, I would rather have one with the oculink port, so I can run a external gpu, usb4 is to slow etc. I was considering just using this and the m.2 slot adapter. Only issue is my 5900x beats this in geek bench.. I guess I will have to wait until the next gen on mini Pcs. I don't want to get a slower cpu, I would just be down grading. It would be nice if these things could use more power, being power limited kills it..
Can the front panal USB 4 adapt to DP connector? It only has 2 HDMI port, but I think DP is much better. Is there any way or answer? Thank you.
Is this quieter than the Beelink GTR7?
Compared to the Asus Ally, slower, faster?
how did you managed to get the driver for it on windows ? I google it and could not find any....
Does BIOS/WIndows support S3 sleep?
I mean, it’s interesting but given the lack of maxed out options it’s not really useful atm and probably need to hunt for an updated video
Would change the killer Wifi card to a normal AX2xx or something.
Can you go over 5600mhs ram. I found 6400 dimms
Cant decide between the um790 or beelink ser 6 max

you do have to know linux a bit, and had to bring it into a shop to help me getting it to run, Steam works good, and I apologize for my previous comment. In all, i paid less than half for a gamer PC (and did try to buy brands and disappointed with the gtx cards) and its as quiet and useful as the stats say,
Can we get a video on the thermals?
With or without overclock? Die temps are around 60-70C using stock TDP and stock GPU clock.
@@TakiUdon I'd be interested in seeing also how the RAM and SSD temps get under load. Someone tested the GTR7 and it got worryingly toasty, and this was a big problem with the UM690, so it'd be interesting to see how well the UM790's new fan and heat sinks work...
I've seen similar mini PCs, namely the gtr7, with ram temps in the 90s. Have you noticed the same with the um790?
my tdp seems to be locked to 65W with bios 1.03. which bios are you running?
Can you make a comparison with HX99G
Chimera OS is nice, i just hate how you need to connect to internet to setup. Installers should have the install files period. What happens when their servers go down or they get shut down. Then chimera goes with it.
So, is it ChimeraOS or SteamOS?
This line has Oculink now... enabling as good of GPU as you want to afford.
Would I have a questio to you that how to set gpu clock to 3200MHz?
I'm not a big fan of ChimeraOS due to the desktop being so gimped (you gotta use a the built-in web app to install thing is "dog crap") IMO. I'd just stick with HoloISO (nightly build not stable). Of course I am still waiting for a official SteamOS ISO to be released (the newer arch based.) It's not a bad little system I could easily replace the two dinky SSDs with a couple of Leven 4TB NVME SSDs for cheap (around $320 for two sticks.) and be able to fit half of my Steam Library on one, and a good chunk of other stuff on the other.
You don't have to use the built-in web app for anything if you don't want to.
@@JeremyLeePotocki I think NTFS should work in the next release. It is a relatively new feature to Linux. But you dont want to use NTFS. You will likely have issues with some games.
@@alkazar79 A new feature on Linux my a.."foot." I've been using different distros of Linux for years (since 2000,) and only some super lightweight distros (those under 300MB) had these kinds of issues. If they do change it in the new release I may reconsider, but for now it's a hard no.

@@TakiUdon thanks ❤
Performed better? How? Pretty much every game here is locked at 30fps on ps4 and some can't even run that consistently.
in the windows gaming it show the GPU at 3200MHZ and memory at 2800MHZ....
did it mixed those two ?
2800MHz*2=5600MT/s, so that 2800MHz thing makes sense for DDR5-5600.
GPU is spec'ed for 3GHz. ETA Prime tried 3.25GHz and it crashed. Maybe with good cooling, it can do 3.2GHz.
Great, can you test Stable Diffusion and WizardLM-GGML on Linux and on Windows on this computer ?
Has anyone encountered data exchange problems between 2 devices connected to the USB ports? I purchased this product, it happens to me that by connecting 2 SSD devices in two ports of the mini PC, there is an incredible slowdown in data exchange. Has anyone encountered the same problem?
how would this compare to the XULU XR1?
6000 vs. 7000 isn't that significant, but 5000 to 7000 is huge.
@@TakiUdon hmm ok - so you think there wouldnt be much of a difference between this and the ONEXPLAYER 2?
The future os APU. Terrible discrete GPU pricong is killing its own market while making APU alot more appealing. However, they will never be better then the APUs in consoles on purpose.
Slot 0 (at the wifi card) Slot 1 (middle)
To think the APU king used to be the 5600G.
SteamOS is not just Steam Big Picture mode and absolutely not ChimeraOS.
I hate that this unit doesn't have LPDDR5-7500MHz.
I just hate that AMD doesn't supper faster DDR5 :\
Yeah that ram speed seems to be half the magic in the Asus Ally's performance.
That's the business Make it almost what people want.
Hey are coming. These mini PCs with LPDDR5
U can replace it sometime later
everyone is showing ChimeraOS lately. Is HoloISO dead?
My vote for HX80G over HX99G or UM790 pro.
My reasons are:
- DDR5 still not completely developed for high efficiency versus speed/latency.
Typo. Too many 7s this generation.
You can't dual boot Chimera OS.
too bad linux doesnt have something simple like windows power plan, thats normally how i do quick and easy iGPU 'overclocks', by changing the high performance power profile to not use turbo, or make a second one called game so i can have high performance with and without turbo.
@@benign4823 this was my point, instead of going through the trouble of -oberclocking- overclocking, i just limit the CPU so it can shift the power, now what i like about linux is that it is easer to customize, we can easily get a keyboard shortcut that switches the CPU power profile, but until it is built into a linux distro, like SteamOS, people will prefer the windows version
I love steam OS distro it is so slick for gaming, i just wish it would support other hardware in the same way, i'd also like more control than package power target, in addition i'd like CPU and GPU power target(allowing you to choose any of the 3 to modify)
@@denvera1g1 At least on Gnome, you can change power by clicking on the upper right part of the bar and then toggle powers from there.
I would like for it to be more configurable though and include the GPU, but since you can use corectrl to configure the GPU on AMD and greenwithenvy for Nvidia I guess people aren't in any hurry.
