    Back to ten years ago, “girl crush” concept wasn’t really a big thing in Korea. When 2NE1 debuted, they built up a brand new image of female idols and shocked the whole Kpop industry.
    However, their unique clothes, edgy hairstyles and heavy makeup didn’t widely be accepted and loved by the majority in Korea. In fact, they were called “ugly unnies” since day one because of the strong hip-hop style that YG put on them.
    The background story of < ugly>:
    One day CL asked their producer Teddy why people always judged and humiliated others if someone didn’t fit the mainstream. Why audiences could easily point at them and called them “ugly” just because they didn’t fit the “beauty standards”. And this is why the song be written and composed.
    So many groups nowadays debuted as “girl crush” style successfully; many fans are obsessed with them, and even Korean do.
    Those girl groups should really thanks to 2NE1, for these four ladies carried those harsh criticism, endured discrimination and made Kpop become more various.
    We should all appreciate their efforts and bravery, when they broke the barriers and expanded the Kpop industry.

      Very simple they just need to respect the girls "2NE1" but haters couldn't they want to forget the past whom PAVED/PAVING the way of girl crush concept. I mean is it really hard to respect or even just say noting if they couldn't say good things? Anyways, I'm with I agree of what you said. :):):):)

      Not just CL but most if not all of the members. Minzy has stated it before as well I believe. YG treated them like crap, made them feel like crap, and told them they were crap. The tossed them away when he was done with them, unable to make music until they got free.
      Minzy Interview: www.billboard.com/articles/columns/k-town/8490927/minzy-interview-opens-up-about-depression-suicidal-thoughts-why-she-left-2ne1
      Article Quote: YG CEO Yang Hyun-suk called them "really ugly" on multiple occasions.
      Article Quote: "People, netizens were critiquing the fact that, you know, we were not the prettiest group," she says. "We were the 'ugly group.' I didn't know how to process that, I held that in. It was tough.

      minzy got bullied back then by toxic fans saying she's ''the ugliest'' of the 4 imagine telling that to a 16 yr old girl making her believe she needs to work harder to get their approval.. hence her mental health deteriorating throughout the years.. and then boom it happened. :/

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +161

    The fact that YGE marketed 2NE1 as "ugly girl group" and YG did call them ugly to their face adds even more depth to this song.

  • @jaywardagua4154
    @jaywardagua4154 4 ปีที่แล้ว +134

    I think this song was more about people (korean people) and other haters labeled them as the "UGLY GROUP" when they debuted. Because, in 2009 when 2NE1 debut they are waaaaaaaay different from the other group or being said that they are the standard beauty of a Korean girl. Even minzy said after leaving the group that they struggle a lot because people calling them "ugly group" and at that time she was 15-16 years old.
    But anyway tenchuuuuuuuuuu! loooovelots!

    I've always felt this song was not an acceptance of feeling ugly but more like them being defiant with it? I'm probably making zero sense but they start off masked/hidden & then by the end they're unmasked & rocking out. This song always makes me feel empowered when I hear it, even knowing the lyrics. Maybe that's completely bizarre but it feels cathartic when you sing it. Ok, I'm going to stop rambling lol. Thanks for blessing us Blackjacks with another 2ne1 reaction Ben

Its refreshing to be honest about feeling this way and knowing that its normal but it doesn't mean we are really ugly. I’ve always wondered if this song was a response to Mr YG? I’ve heard he was known to call them the ugly group. It would make sense, references to fake ness and being cold. Of course it’s lyrics have meaning beyond that.

  • @Marimomo721

    There's a context to this song. As many have pointed out, this related to more than just thinking of yourself as ugly, it's also about them being told they are ugly. YG staid that to their faces once when they were not wearing make-up, and if I remember correctly, when BlackPink was about to debut, he referred to them as "like 2NE1, but pretty", once again implying that the 2NE1 girls were ugly. But it was more than just YG, it was also the Korean public. Back then, girl groups were going more for the typically pretty and cute look, while 2NE1 was going for a more edgy looks. Dara has often been considered one of the prettiest idols (might still be), but in the MVs she always has the craziest hairstyles, not always very flattering, because looking "as pretty as possible" wasn't that important for their concepts. That's definitely something that set them apart from the other girl groups promoting at that time.
    Actually, Big Bang, also had the issue of being considered an "ugly boy group" at some point. Eventually, it kinda became something YG Family fans re-appropriated, like "our idols aren't popular for their looks, but because of their talent", back when there was a divide between YG fans and SM fans.
    (Also, please react to Big Bang again~ I know you said you wanted to react to the MVs order of release, but at this pace, it's gonna be an eternity before we reach their more popular songs...)

    In the live performances, CL just sing the lines: I wanna be----
    She leaves "pretty" to the back up vocals Coz I think she really doesn't want to be someone else.
    It's been agreed that 2NE1 got one of the most diverse discography out there.

    Yeah, this is one of those songs that pulls me in different directions. It’s like they’ve internalised the criticism and hurtful words, but they’re also kind of embracing it, like, “So what if I’m ugly? Let me be.” This song would have been my anthem as a teenager because that feeling of wanting to fit the standards of others while also being yourself basically summed up my whole existence.

    Honestly, I cried every time I listen to this song because in facts I grew up as an ugly kid as people used to treat me like an ugly kid. I never feel I'm pretty. Other kids used to make fun of my appearance and that makes me feel "maybe I'm that ugly" "I'm not that attractive"

    The IMPACT this song had on my life at the time, man, I wish I had gotten the chance to thank them for it. It's a song about defiance to me, like even though I can't really change that I dislike myself, be it because of others or my own problems (and it takes a lot of work and time to get through it) it helped me say "fuck it, I can't have that drag me down"

    This is one of my favorite song from 2NE1, actually I know the lyrics kinda pessimist about your looks but the music and MV bring some power like "I know I am ugly and I don't care" . Back then when I was felt down about my look, I was really love to heared this song and make my mood up . Its like you try to accepting yourself and making it fun. Thats my oppinion .

    2NE1 said "wear your mask".
    I feel like this is an indulgent song when you want to be mad and sad and hate the world. Everyone gets self concious and feels like they're not pretty enough, and this song to me is just letting yourself have those feelings, acknowledging them, and realizing that being pretty is not important compared to who you are as a person. I remember screaming this in HS when it first came out. So much nostalgia for this track.

  • @kendragonn_
    @kendragonn_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    It's so sad that the 2NE1 girls were considered ugly by many people, even by YG himself. In relation to other idol groups at the time, they were considered less attractive and more unique with the girl crush concept because they didn't have the traditional Korean beauty standards. This song could be the girls (or the company) admitting that they don't meet that standard but it's part of their charm and uniqueness. I honestly see this song as them admitting they're imperfect and that it's okay to be because that's reality - no one is perfect and beauty is subjective. It's an anthem for everyone who ever felt like they were ugly, as sad as that is, but admitting imperfection instead of hiding your feelings away about those types of things can be very freeing (if that makes sense).
    P.S. I think CL is coming out with music soon, so definitely keep an eye out for that

    I will 4ever say this: 2NE1 always had a message to say. Being called ugly themselves and always giving power to not only their fans but to everybody, that's what makes them special. There will never be another group like them! There will only be people following their path and do what they did. I wish people that listen to 2NE1 will say "I LOVE MYSELF AND I WILL DO WHAT MAKES ME HAPPY".

  • @fav7013
    @fav7013 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    the message given here is about calling 2NE1 an ugly group since the beginning and I use translation I hope I can explain. At the beginning of the video, they break the door in the field that says 'ugly girls not allowed', meaning they show that they exist in this sector against those who do not want ugly girls in the kpop industry. then they paint women who look the same as a result of the industry's imposition of 'singers should always be beautiful'. In the last scene, together with the colorful women, who do not look the same anymore, they take their hands mic and start singing and dancing. there is a message here again. If you notice that 2NE1 was shown as the ugly band and so they were told they should not sing 'I sing a song but no one listens to me
    I am not pretty, I am not beautiful 'and 2NE1, despite all these pressures, take the microphone and sing as ugly girls. aaaaand just as the video says ugly girls can't get in the beginning of the video, if they get in there they finally blow it up. is the most precious song of 2NE1 for me with everything. unique with lyrics, video, melody, costume and dance choreography
    If you want to watch, I share the link to my favorite 'ugly' performances.

    This songs packs a huge punch and remains as one of my favorite 2ne1 songs.
    This song is more like a defiance to the traditional view on Koreans about beauty. And during that time, a girl group like 2ne1 was not a trend. They were the ones who broke the stereotype on korean girl groups and their influence have opened doors to a more different trend in ggs in the following years.

  • @sochettrachou6230
    @sochettrachou6230 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The message of this song give everyone different opinion but this song personally make for the group because they’re not known as korean beauty standard. 2ne1 themselves want to be real and bring awareness to people that it’s ok for us to feel ugly sometime and want to be pretty. Moreover let’s accept the fact there is no such a thing as everyone is beautiful it’s just lie that one said to not feel bad that’s why in this song there’s lyric said this world is full of lies. To be honest most people who ever feel ugly probably feel the song because it’s the first song that I ever listen to that stated the truth even though it hurt but somehow I feel at ease that someone finally said it loud and 2ne1 say this just make me feel I’m not wrong to think like that.

    Even after so many years, this song still touches my heart every time i listen to it. The message is so relatable. I love all the members and i love how they used so much feeling in their singing for this song. Dara’s bridge especially sounds so sorrowful and makes me tear up 😢 there will never be another kpop girl group who could ever sing a song with this kind of topic because we all know companies try to choose the most beautiful and pretty trainees who fit that korean ideal of beauty. 2ne1 are beautiful in their own unique way even if it wasnt the korean standard of beauty and i loved them for that.

  • @XDanielleLouiseMx

    2ne1 were bullied from the moment they debuted. They were labeled as the ‘Ugly Group’ because they didn’t fit into Korean beauty standards. Even YG himself told them they were ugly to their faces! Can only imagine the damaging effect that had on their self-esteem and mental health, especially CL and Minzy who where still teenagers. They didn’t fit into what a girl group was ‘suppose’ to be back then, so they created something new and changed the kpop game for girl groups. Unfortunately to this day they still get disgusting comments 😩

  • @magiccq91
    @magiccq91 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ugly is one of my fav mvs of theirs probably because it’s so relatable to me. The lyrics are sad but the way the mv is basically their way of saying it's okay, love yourself not matter what others say.
    2NE1 is dressed in basically many ways that girls are told make them ugly(tattoos, certain makeup styles, etc) and at first they are hiding behind a mask.
    If you noticed when Minzy broke the glass in the mv. There was a sign “You are Beautiful” and inside was a mannequin that is what many societies have driven girls to consider as being beautiful... many times unrealistic characteristics like a mannequin which often drives people to getting surgeries or procedure to alter their appearance because they feel they are ugly. You notice in the chorus that although they are saying I think I’m Ugly...it’s not stopping them from enjoying life as they shout it out and embrace that it’s okay to feel ugly.(to be ugly is not just thinking you’re physically ugly but mentally inside yourself as well) You then notice CL cutting the chain to a fence and above it there is a sign saying “Ugly girls not allowed.” Basically 2NE1 breaks into that area were you see a Plastic Zone with women. To me this screen is about how when someone changes themselves because of others(in this case with plastic surgery since they are in plastic zone.) The person basically becomes just something to look at not enjoying life as they chase after trying to find the beauty in themselves. There is this divide that society often propitiates between the ‘Ugly’ girls and the ‘pretty’ girls but 2NE1 spray paints them (kind of like waking them up and saying we are all women)and the women join them as 2NE1 destroys the plastic zone with paint which is a zone that also cages those who get plastic surgery as even though they are considered pretty they as well get stuck with a negative label of someone who has gotten plastic surgery... in the end the area were it said “No ugly girls allowed” is blown up.
    The mv is what you make it but it was very well done to me and at the time of it’s release many girls found this song very relatable.(and still do) Especially since it’s known that 2NE1 have been called ugly not only by their own management but by critics and many others too.

    They were often called the 'ugly ones' when compared to KARA, T-ara, Wonder Girls, Girls' Generation, and etc. So the lyrics are more of a criticism for the beauty standards. And, of course it's not those groups fault, this song was pointed directly to the KPOP industry as a whole, and it is a self-acceptance anthem.

    Yeah this song takes in various meanings for many people, but it’s a song that 2NE1 related to the most! With the exception of Dara, YG aka YHS(former YG Executive producer Yang Hyunsuk) really did call the other members UGLY to their faces. Even if Dara is considered pretty, you see her style whether hair or clothes is not so flattering to her. But because it’s Dara..she pulls them off and still looks good. Also, as many people had said...at that time 2NE1 debuted..they weren’t considered BEAUTIFUL or PRETTY compared to other girl groups like Wonder Girls, Miss A, SNSD, KARA, and T-ARA. Their “girl crush/bad girl” concept was different at the time and had mixed reactions from the general public. But nobody can deny how catchy the song is and how much charisma that 2NE1 has when they perform. They weren’t considered beautiful for Koreans, BUT they were different and unique and stood out from mainstream girl groups. Then 2NE1 just bloomed and took over the industry and that’s how history was made! Actually, GP at that time really did call YG artists “UGLY” or not attractive compared to other Idols from other companies. So the whole YG artists isn’t attractive, but they are extremely talented and charismatic was born from that time. But they were wrong! BIG BANG and 2NE1 really bloomed and legit had a GLOW UP! 😂 YUP..even Big Bang was labeled as an UGLY BOY GROUP back then! LEGENDS AKA KINGS AND QUEENS OF KPOP BEING CALLED UGLY! CRAZY RIGHT?!
    Anyways, you should totally check out BIG BANG’s DAESUNG and WINNER’s YOON aka POWER VOCALS DUO version of “UGLY”! It’s the male version and they did it on the YG FAMILY TOUR back in 2014!! It’s so much fun and cool version of it! 👍

    my take of this song is that yes yg marketed them as the ugly girlgroup and everything but i think it's also a way to say im ugly (according to society's standrad) and i don't need you, who don't know me, to tell me im pretty and validate me. with the mv and them having fun, i feel like its implied that theyre there to have fun and be themselves and beauty isn't something that should keep them from doing that. of course, back in the day, i hated this song a little bc i didn't understand how the fours girls i idolized would call themselves ugly and if THEYRE ugly then what am i ? haha but now at 27 i feel like i understand this song more and that feeling of not owning the world anything, i don't have to be pretty or have someone tell me im pretty to live my life happily if that makes sense ? haha
    thank you for reacting to my loves 🖤 i would really love to see you react to their solo stuff next pls :)

    I think the song was resolved by the music video itself. If you haven't noticed, the MV contradicted the lyrics A LOT. The MV was like, "I don't care how I look and what you think of how I look" but the lyrics were the opposite.

    they are really brave to take on that... YG was able to push the 'girl crush' concept of 2ne1 and have massive success with it because CL, Bom, Dara and Minzy courageously embrace their uniqueness, quirkness and style that others call 'UGLY'. Instead of dwelling on the criticism, they just have fun with who they are...them breaking into plastic zone, and instead of succumbing to the standards, they set their own trend and influences and empowers them to embrace their true selves...which what the videos want to imply i think.
    As for the lyrics the positive note is that they've had enough with fake concerns and sympathy, pretenciousness and unsolicited advice. And the song has no resolving matter is maybe because it's the POV of someone's feeling UGLY, may it be depression and unhealthy mentality....the song seems like a cry for help of those people who had the same POV. They cry for understanding, comfort and empathy not fake concerns, pretencious sympathy and advice.
    And for those who hears this song and relate to the lyrics... instead of getting sentimental because someone sings how they feel.... they'll feel empower instead...bop their heads to the song and say "what the heck... I just don't care " and sing along with chorus loudly (bcoz it's in english😅😆)

    Sometimes you feel like you're not good enough and realizing that you are takes time, if all the songs only had positive messages it would make you feel even worse cuz you would think you're the only one feeling this way, having a song that matches the emotions you're feeling, even if they're bad, is empowering
    The end goal is important but the journey as well, not all songs should focus on the end goal

  • @ub3r1337dud31
    @ub3r1337dud31 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Personally, I very much thought that Ugly not turning the message around into something positive made the song better. We’re not always going be feeling 100% good about ourselves all the time, and alot of those times in those moments, there wont be any closure. There wont always be happy endings. I think that’s what’s great about the song. It’s not trying to feed the listener any heavy handed forced positivity. I think theres some very important empowerment that Ugly as a song brings up in the fact that it fully acknowledges that it’s impossible to feel great all the time and just validates that feeling in way that basically says “its alright to feel this way. You’re the one feeling your emotions, and it’s ok not to be ok”
    Remains as 2NE1’s most human and genuine song imo

    This is kinda why people shouldn't tell other people that they're beautiful because when people think that they are ugly those words are just not helpful. When I thought I'm so ugly and needed plastic surgery, the words that I truly needed to hear is that I don't need to be pretty because I'm not a doll that can be sold only when it's pretty. I don't need to be pretty to be loved. I'm a human, I just need to keep runnin towards my goals and dream

    This 'ugly' can be about looks, but its also means about personalities/attitude..

  • @lizzieluxe__6969
    @lizzieluxe__6969 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes there is an implied sentiment of resolution in the MV not so much in the lyrics. However they start off being their faces and all wearing face masks then gradually take them off their faces showing their true self and just start to have fun and have that rock type of feel, like letting loose and letting go of others think. But yes as I read in other comments YG did call them ugly to their faces since they didn’t meet the standard idea of beauty in Korea.

    I think at the end of the video they were finally able accept who they are and what they are and it's okay that they don't fit the korean standard of beauty (or the society for that matter), because accepting yourself and being true to yourself is more important than try fit a certain mold and ended up losing your true self.

  • @flixyble
    @flixyble 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    YG literally called them ugly, and when they debuted people call them ugly because the way they dress and how they look does not fit the standard of beauty in Korea, but the girls overcome it all and become the baddest girl group in Korea.

    This has always been a very relatable song.
    You know... that's partially why its hard for me to bring myself to listen to Blackpink. I've still never heard their music. I've no doubt they are incredibly talented and have worked their butts off to get where they are, its just the fact YG literally promoted them as the "Better, prettier version of 2NE1" that crawled beneath my skin so badly it left me with a very sour feeling towards him promoting Blackpink.
    Again, its nothing against the girls in Blackpink personally and I'm sure they don't feel that way towards 2NE1.
    Its just YG always calling 2NE1 ugly and treating them like they weren't of any talent makes it incredibly difficult for me to support the music his company produces anymore. I know a lot of companies are bad for these sort of things but YG openly didn't appreciate 2NE1 and they suffered greatly from it mentally and emotionally.
    It is very heartbreaking when the world could see how beautiful those girls were, yet they were told they weren't.
    If I recall correctly, Teddy mentioned that he wrote this song one day when he must have been feeling down about himself and he made a bit of a vague joke about how he must have been depressed at the time he wrote it, but it was suggested the song be given to 2NE1 and it was restructured to suit them. That detail was played on a behind the scenes clip a long time ago where it showed him talking about it, and it always stuck with me.
