What an amazing video! Side note: even on youtube audio the difference between the analogue and the sampled versions of the sounds are clearly noticeable. I own the Bass Station II so when I get the MPC I’ll start to experiment with sampling it :)
What would be really nice in a future firmware update would be gate layering. For patches with long releases you get different sounds based on whether you hold the key down or just tap it. It would be cool if it would do the same as with velocity and take multiple samples of the same note but for different gate times. I know you could use the sampler's envelope and filter for those kinds of nuances but then you're not using your analogue synth's filter, so it changes the sound.
Loved the video. I remember multisampling my fav Matrix 12 patches chromatically for 10 seconds into my Kronos and they never sounded the same... I guess the way voices saturate in the mixer stage has a big impact.. I think its important to keep the interval quite low, also modulation is hard to sample... I prefer to add modulation in the destination... still you got some nice character I think.. I think something like the Iridium using grain might be the way to go for sampling modular patches... Still nice video!
The auto-multi-sampler is one of the most interesting features of the MPC gear. Have been tempted to get one and sample like crazy, then build songs entirely on the MPC. It's like a childhood dream come true... all the features I wanted but didn't have back in .mod tracker days.
Yup, super powerful if you take the time to organize and catalog a ton of sounds. I think that’s my next step in this journey. Every time I make a cool modular patch, deep sample it before I tear it down.
Every video you make lately though, I mostly find myself wanting that Pro 3 in the background. :) (because I've been diving into a DAW lately, and a multitracked Pro 3 seems like perhaps the best synth for my style) Regardless, MPC + multisamples is a very appealing option, and I'm happy to see a detailed video on the topic!
Thanks for walking us through the process, rookie mistakes and all. I feel I have a much better idea now of what it would be like to use an MPC to sample hardware synths, especially with monophonic instruments for polyphonic playback. Have you tried it with the Microfreak?
Hey friend. So I have a mox8 keyboard. How do I get the voices and stock sounds from my mox8 into my mpc 1? I used the usb and it just lets me control the stock sounds in the mpc1
Hi, I'm receiving my Live II this week. Is there a way to export or access these multisamples? I would like to have the wav files to load them on my Disting EX or others... And indeed cheers for Rings (and Elements as well)!
There is conversion , twice in fact. Digital to analogue out and once it hits the MPC analogue to digital. The only way it would remain digital is if it had a digital output and MPC had a digital input from it.
I thought it was about autosampling, but then it was more about routing and your modular synth settings and paths and I'm out here, watching for something better.
Do you have a video specifically on how you’re routing your MPC One with your mixer and instruments? I have a classic Beringer 12 track audio mixer and a Zoom R16 and I’m trying to figure out the optimal way to route everything.
Hi Jamaal, not yet. Might do one soon, but it kinda depends if the setup gets rearranged for another project. I feel like as soon as a setup video goes out, the setup changes 🤣
Tefty, please, be completely honest. If you, right now, at this precise moment, had to choose ONLY ONE between the MPC ONE and the Digitakt, what would you choose and why. I am asking you this because, I have not much money for buying both, but I certainly want to make the best decision. Please, help me decide. Thanks in advance!
Great video! What is the name of that Mackie board you were referring to in the beginning? and how does that flexible routing stuff work? It seems to be perfect for making the mpc the brain of the studio :)
I’m using a Mackie Onyx 1640i .. bought it used for a couple hundred. I might do a routing vid in the future, but essentially it involves a patchbay so I route ins and outs wherever I need them at any given time for my hybrid setup. Thanks for watching! 🍻
The auto sampler is good for saving your patches when your gear cannot save settings. Im still using the Akai Z8 for MPC keygroups but when im not in my studio I use auto sample. Good video. Im not fully into modular yet but It looks like pretty soon
SOO 100 BRAND hey sorry to bother you, but I own a Z8 and sometimes I consider switching to mpc one or live, it seems you own both, for what reason do you keep working with the z8 vs mpc ?
Thanks for watching! I haven’t used the Autosampler a whole lot before this video but I’m gonna start cataloging some of my favorite synth sounds now (or modular experiments). It’s just so easy and simple to get working. Cheers! 🍻
@@jonathanthomamusic5131 I still use the Z8 because I have had it a long time now to make keygroups. Its multi-timbral so I can stack up to 16 keygroups, set envelopes and effects for each then I would use my MPC Live to sample that 16 keygroup stack. I find that the new auto-sampler is limited but quick and useful. The files from the Z8 load up into the New MPCs except you lose the envelope settings and effects you set in the Z8. The Z8 Is essentially the MPC 4000 in a rack version. Lots of power you have there dig into it. They are hard to come by now. I chose the Z8 for its processing power. Its auto-sample on steroids
@@TeftyMeems It's a handy feature. I dont sample with effects just pure oscillator. You can bake in some lfo modulation and envelopes because the new MPCs are limited in those areas but amp envelope, filter envelope and effects should happen after auto-sample.
SOO 100 BRAND thanks ! Yeah I love my Z8 a lot, I got it since it’s release and made a lot of keygroups . I was hoping I could load them easily in the new mpc’s without resetting envelopes and filters!
Dude that is the whole problem...the nuances get lost when sample in analog! I have my MPC 5000 still and use the spdif in out of high end AD/ DA converter. I went through hell to keep my old set up! I just couldn't stand the sound of the MPC preamps going in. It totally kills the vibe of the sound. I'm thinking of changing the op amps on the pres on my MPC now.
There are surprisingly few options to autosample synths. But the 1010music Blackbox with the 1.6.4 firmware is damn near flawless! th-cam.com/video/1qSvO1_xoko/w-d-xo.html
Hmmm interesting. I checked out the vid and I feel like the MPC Autosampler is just as good and maybe a little more straight forward. Just my opinion though, and I haven’t played with a Blackbox yet from 1010.
@@TeftyMeems I would like to see how easy it is to "export" stems into a DAW from the MPC if you have any experience with that process. That is one thing that the Blackbox could improve on.
Isn’t it technically the same as just recording the instrument to an audio track? I may be mistaken here, but wouldn’t that mean there is no analog to digital conversion happening?
John Vipond: Whether the audio is recorded or sampled, if he is using the MPC it still has to go through an A to D conversion (to record) and another conversion (D to A) to hear the sound when you are playing it. If he was recording the modular synths direct to tape (avoiding the MPC altogether), then it would be all analog...and no conversion. Make sense? :)
It's not the same. The autosampling turns the recorded synth into a keygroup inside the MPC. You can then play the keygroup without having the physical synth there. It's not obvious in this case because he plays it with the Keystep either way, but he could (for example) take the MPC to a gig and still play the synth sounds with the Keystep while his modular synth is at home in the cupboard. The MPC is not an analog mixer, so regardless of whether you record into an audio track, play a synth live into the audio inputs, or sample into a keygroup or drum pads, there's always analog-to-digital conversion going on.
Still analog to digital conversion going on. The MPC is a digital platform. In order to sample, it goes through an ADC. When sampling there’s always some sort of trade off that occurs with the process. Thanks for watching! 🍻
@@TeftyMeems Maybe recording the instrument directly and not via a mixer improves things? I don't know the signal path, but maybe the mixer does some eq/gain?
I started watching because you were using my oscillator and I ended up ordering an MPC One. Thanks for turning me on to something new.
