Teaching puppy Nikita to walk on a leash using connection and follow

  • This eight week old Miniature American Shepherd/Miniature Australian shepherd with her tail is learning how to walk on a loose leash by using connection and follow instead of treats. If you watch my off leash hike in the woods with seven dogs in my building connection video you will see the end result. Here I develop follow and attention before ever snapping on the leash. With a puppy this young (eight weeks) training sessions are short. I do not use treats or my voice. I use her natural instincts.

    You said nobody would want to watch an hour long video, I wouldn’t mind that.

    Love your channel, just discovered it last week. I have two 12 week littermate females who are 1/2 Great Pyrenees and 1/2 Australian Shepherd mix. They will be big and I definitely need this sort of follow. I am working on all your stillness training,. How do I fix pulling ahead and pulling on the leash, since that is where I am at this moment? I am working on connecting with both pups, I do realize to begin there, but I felt like I had done that fairly well, since I have had them for a month and really worked on bonding with them. What I don’t have is the focus and follow…but I’m using your advice on this from other videos, so hope that it helps! I’m not whiny to begin with and I don’t put up with behavior I don’t want, but making corrections to behavior is what I am struggling with…as in how to correct…I have no problem doing whatever needs doing. One other question; when together loose, ALL they want to do is play fight, bite, etc. We make them stop, but it makes it nearly impossible to have them together and behave. I am working this week on trying to correct this as well. Any suggestions for the how on that would be appreciated, as well. A video I would LOVE to see is a day in your life. How do you possibly get everything done?!! I am impressed.

      Hi Mariei, Welcome to our pack! Thanks for your comments and questions. You must realize they are only puppies. You need to do age appropriate training. Don't expect too much and realize they will have short attention spans. The Pyr is an independent thinking dog. The Aussie, more interested in pleasing but what was the aussie mixed with? Yes, they will be big so early training is a must but appropriate training! What is wrong with the playing? Let them play. That is what puppies do. Just figure at this age when they are together they are not going to listen to you or "behave" because they are puppies. You need to isolate one at a time for training. Pressure and release, the table training. Watch first things first and train with me videos. Keep sessions short and sweet. Try to relax and don't be too rigid. They are puppies and if you keep being a buzz kill they will not want to bond with you.

      Also, we are not sure of the mix on the Australian Shepherd. It was a dog from down the road that bred a friend of mine’s Pyr. I am giving them a home, as I believe they will make good all around farm dogs.

    How often do you feed her? You mentioned feeding the canned food by hand but is that just for this training? We're continuing to work on house training so gotta have a schedule!

      HI Mary, This video is of Nikita over a year ago. All grown up. I hand feed part of each meal when they are small for bonding.

    Thank you for this video! I’m also training an eight week old mini Aussie in Texas! What would be your advice if the dog likes to carry the leash in her mouth?

    • @dreamgaits
      @dreamgaits  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't allow that because it interferes with communication. I let them mouth it a bit the first time just to explore it, but after that I don't let them.

    Great tips! I'm planning to get mini American Shepherd and I've been reading and watching many training videos. I live in an apartment. Can this type of lease training be done inside? I do not believe I would be able to take a puppy outside until they get all the vaccinations at 16-18 weeks or would it be safe after the first or second vaccinations at 10-12 weeks?

      You can take your puppy outside but you need to use some common sense. Keep it out of areas where unknown dogs have eliminated and away from strange and unvaccinated dogs. If you wait to take it out until that old you are going to miss out on critical socialization. I often take puppies out after their second shot but to places like Lowes and Home Depot where I am less likely to encounter dogs. Set up meet and greets with friends friendly dogs that are vaccinated. Yes, you can do this indoors.Thanks for your comment.
