My dogs used to drag me around - but it was easy to train them not to. If they put any tension on the leash at all I’d just stop - and not say or do anything at all. Eventually they’d get bored and relax. As soon as they did and the tension on the leash relaxed I’d say “let’s go.” It didn’t take them long to figure out that if they wanted to keep exploring they need to make sure to never pull on the leash.

If your getting a difficult and intense dog such as that I hope this isn’t your first or forth dog and zak WILL NOT be the right trainer for you. The dog will test you. Show aggression towards food or preassure being put on it. Struggle with aggression towards dogs and strangers... seriously check out mate shoemer

One routine that has really helped with our walks is every morning we take our dog on a smell walk where she gets to sniff things in the park at a meandering pace. This contrasts with walking to a particular place and helps her focus without stopping to smell everything. She knows the 2nd or 3rd or 4th walk of the day isn't a smell walk.

My dog will do anything to make me smile, when she was a pup she would never pick a treat, but when she understanded that taking a treat made me happy, she started to take them to communicate with me, so treats are not always the way to train a dog and for few dogs they are not even important.

Hi Zak! I'm bringing my new puppy home in a few weeks and have been watching your videos in preparation! I've read a lot about the merits of fresh cooked food deliveries like Ollie or Farmer's Dog and their nutritional superiority to kibble, so I was just about ready to sign up for one of those services, but saw you recommend puppy-specific kibble which took my by surprise. Do you believe a commercial puppy kibble is better than a service like Ollie that uses very high quality & clean ingredients, and tailors the portions they send you to the age of your pup? I could really use your guidance here!

I wish I could be this patient with my dog I always feel myself getting very frustrated when on walk and then I feel very guilty when I get home because I know he dosen’t know better

There are two types of dog walking. The "heal" walk and the "adventure" walk. The heal walk is very formal. You set the pace and the dog stays at your side. The other is the adventure walk. Here the dog is free to stop and sniff, and resumes the walk when he wants. Many dogs can transition from heal to adventure easily.
One way to make the transition easier is to heal on the sidewalk and adventure when off-sidewalk.

A Zak George video without Pupbox or Pupford? Also awesome video...hoping a lightbulb in my 4mth old's head will go off soon with loose leash walking!

Perfect loose leash walking does take a very long time to develop. My 16 month old is getting pretty good at it, she rarely goes to the end of her leash even when she is a bit excited to get somewhere. I'd say there are times when it feels like you are repeating the same exercises and nothing gets better, and then there are huge leaps when they suddenly understand something. For your sanity, enjoy your puppy and don't worry too much about perfect lose leash walking yet, 4 months is really young. Play in a fenced in area or on a long leash instead of walking so much. When you teach other things your puppy gets better at learning and you get better at communicating with your puppy, then you can do things like reward for eye contact or do tricks while you walk instead of being the leash police all the time.

@@emmamemma4162 Thank you for taking the time to write your comment! Glad to hear your girl is mastering it! He's training to be a service dog so he does need to learn how to walk nicely quite soon, but as you say having fun is definitely as important! We play this game with treats on pavements where I try to keep his attention on me when cars (and anything else that moves) goes past and he is getting really good at it. Pulls for a little bit but then really gets into the game! He loves it!

@@HayleyEastabrook That sounds like fun, how exactly do you play this game?

    • @HayleyEastabrook

      @@emmamemma4162 It's awesome!
Basically I take him out to the path just outside my garden (it's only a 20m/h route). We don't go anywhere else apart from walking up and down the path a bit. Every time a car passes he gets a treat (usually chicken, cheese, sausage or ham...just something very high value). If he reacts to them then he doesn't, but we move around more and I throw treats on the ground. It gets his mind away from fixating on the cars and anything else that moves (typical collie) and he has to have his nose down sniffing for the goodies! We do this inbetween those triggers for him so he doesn't lose interest. And bonus food if he looks at me. It's something our trainer taught us and he loves it. Makes him work for his breakfast and dinner, as well as gets his mind thinking. We have only been doing it for just over 1 week, so he still reacts to the odd car, but he looks back at me so much quicker already.

@@HayleyEastabrook Do you use the same treats as a reward for not reacting to a car and for throwing on the ground or are they different?
My dog's weak point is wildlife (typical hound, lol) we have plenty of spots where I know for a fact there'll be rabbits, so maybe I could adjust this game into something we can do around those places. Thanks for sharing!
Something that came across my mind when I was walking my dog and thinking about your reply and how the stakes are higher when training a service dog: do you use something like a vest to let him know when he is "on duty" and if so, how has that been?

My collie is pretty good at this for the most part. The "snoot ensnaring golden blade of grass" is still a problem but not as much as it used to be.

Hey! I should be getting a dog pretty soon.
I still don’t know what breed I’ll be getting but I’m considering one which doesn’t shed a lot. However, since I live in a state where it snows for a few months, It’d be best if he had a moderate amount of fur.
I had my last puppy 6 years ago so I’d really be great to know the most recommended toys, food, and accessories. Any suggestions?

It looks like a Blue 9 Balance harness. I have one and really like it because all the parts adjust for a perfect fit. I do use a more padded harness as well though. I like Dog Copenhagen or Ruffwear for those.
