  • This Video is about solving the problem of a dog or puppy barring down in order to not walk on a leash. Solving this problem is an easy fix that just needs a little encouragement. Learning how to train your dog to walk on a leash is a fun task. Sometimes pups are like Stormy and they don't know the fun that a walk can be yet. We will get her to walk on a leash without pulling in no time.

As much as I wish I had sent my dog to Brandon for training before bringing him home th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU I am so grateful for this down-to-earth, practical guide. His training techniques and tips really work. Thank you as well for dedicating your life's work to rescue dogs, and to rescuing those of us who want the very best for our 4-legged family members.

Actually, this was helpful. I needed to see a “normal” dog, not all those miracle puppies, that learn on the first try after some Guaranteed Advice. Now my stubborn puppy cooperates. Walk on a leash was a joy for once.

Thank you so much! I've had my puppy off leash at our house since we can't take him on walks until he's vaccinated. But he will be soon so I started leash training in the backyard.
Before this video he yanked back yard instantly and it slid his collar over his head and came off.
I watched this video this morning and the first 5-10 minutes I was having to reach under him and encourage him to walk just like the dog in the video. Then he progressed quickly and was following me, zero tugging!
I used a combo of praise and treats.
This afternoon I gave him another session and he followed me instantly this time! We went for about 10-15 minutes just waking in random directions in the backyard.
It makes me feel more confident he'll love following my every move on walks in just a couple weeks!
I'll continue this training a everyday until then to prepare! Thank you!!! 🙏🙏🙏

I know it's 8 months later so you've probably solved it, however, I found that by not playing their game of stopping and waiting for them to get into it helps. I would just drop/remove the leash and keep walking slowly without looking back. 9/10 times I don't even have to turn around to check- they'll be right behind you :)
The moment you turn around and come back to them you're letting the dog think it's ok to behave the way it is. Hope this helps!

This is the encouragement I need with my 5 month old Labradoodle. He started hesitating on walks, I then mistakenly used treats as he is very food motivated. It didn’t take long for him to figure out that stopping and sitting will eventually bring a treat to move forward. Thank-you for helping me reverse the behavior I created in my too smart puppy!!

My 4 year old English bulldog/pug mix will only walk within the same 30 feet back and forth as much as I like and I need to pull her to go further away from the house. Now this dog likes her food, but outside of that 30 feet, she won't take a food treat even, she'll spit it out and just lock up like a stone, keep giving her treats, she'll take it then spit it out and not budge. If you drag her she'll play along for another 5 feet and then dart back to her 30 ft safe zone and lock up again unless she walks within thay space.
She's come a long way in the 2 years I've had her but I wish I could walk longer with her. I got her at 2 years old and 30 pounds and no muscle, as a breeder rescue she had given birth and been fixed, her foot pads baby soft, her toenails were a disaster long and curled to where her toes were out of place and scared of everything except silence. I suspect she was caged since a puppy until 2 yo. She was a nightmare to housebreaking, she was used to using the bathroom in her cage out of necessity and living with it, so crate training failed miserably, if she had to go, she went and she'd lay down and sleep in it because that's what she knew.
Took 8 months of working with her, no crate or cage ever again, plenty of trips outside for bathroom, and getting her used to going on grass only, and then working on her holding it after that until she was taken outside to the grass and still I won't go longer than 8 hours which took forever to get her up to.
She's mostly good except not wanting to go beyond her comfort zone walking now.
Now she's near 50 pounds all of it muscle, she can run and jump and get on her back legs now, foot pads are rough as they should be, I've got her toenails straightened out, all is pretty good overall. I guess when they spend 2 years in, probably a tiny cage, an entire house and 30ft perimeter outside must seem huge to her and I should be happy she's gotten that far. I dunno. I feel bad putting pressure on her to go further when I know she just flat out doesn't want to do it at all. .. be blessed. Just keep working with your dog, each day is another day of progress.

Holding the leash horizontal with ever so slight tension was a game changer for me and my high alert rescue pup on this morning's leash training. We've been working on him putting himself into a sit instead of trying to run away when he sees "danger", which he does an excellent job of now. But we have been struggling to figure out how to start walking again. Thanks so much for demonstrating with a dog who is still learning. This was a helpful idea!

Thank you for uploading. My pug puppy was doing ok with walking on her leash, with a harness, until she reached 4 months, now she she has started this refusing behavior. She will take a few steps and then sit or lay down and refuse to move. It seems to be part fear, part stubbornness, because she will walk more easily when she is going where she wants, with me following her, but when I try and lead her where I want to go, she gets stubborn. I think this method might work to help build her confidence up. I've read that around 16 months is when most puppies can become more fearful of new things and experiences.

    • @sparkyjones560
      @sparkyjones560 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Pugs will bond with a single person. And they will get anxious if that person leaves for too long or they feel they are too far away from that person, they get separation anxiety.
If you can leave for hours and come back and it's not such a big deal then it's possible the Pug is bonded to someone else in the house and needs that person in eye shot to feel comfortable. I don't know your particular situation, just saying that they pick a favorite and that might be what's going on, and if so the only way to break the habit is for that person to normalize being away from the dog for long periods of time so the pug don't get anxious.
This could be the cause, but maybe not. It depends on the specifics, but pugs get fiercely loyal to a single person in the house that they spend a lot of time around and become codependent on them being there. that person generally will be the only person that can train or retrain them out of the dependency and anxiety. Good luck and be blessed.

Used this method but with treats I feel like she didn’t like the leash bc of the choking so I had to wait until she was ready to try it and...I didn’t have time for that so I used treats get her to to respond and once she got one she listened whenever I bend down so now I just have to bend a bit and she keeps going

My frenchy only walks when it's towards home. I need to get my kids to school so most of the way i have to carry him. But once we are one the way back he is basically running.
I think it's because of the cold, still it's frustrating having to carry him haha

Excited to try this. My puppies do fine on the way outside and using the bathroom but when it's time to go inside they get stubborn and refuse to walk. I usually give in and end up carrying them after several attempts. I don't want them to get used to that because they are pitbulls and going to be bigger than me eventually. Is this technique good to get them to come inside as well?

    • @WittleHavanese
      @WittleHavanese  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes! Anytime they do the motion themselves and aren’t pulled and forced to do it they learn. Tension is good letting them know to walk the direction prompted. But allowing their brain to commit and move their leg is the most important part.

My puppy is 11 weeks old. I adopted him from the shelter. He is terrified of the leash. I’m walking his teddy bear. And putting the leash in a circle pattern on the floor, placed a treat inside the circle. He would not take the treat until his bear had the walk. He actually lashes out after leash training by pooping in the house.... I’ve no idea what happened to him. So I added the leash to his toy pile so he can just get comfortable seeing a leash. The funniest thing is after his teddy bear was walked Rolo loosened the leash around his teddy bears neck then walked away happy. He’s so smart. He also loves big praise. Thanks for the video.

Help with bull terrier. He is fine with walking on a leash and walking overall, but some times just stops exactly like this dog in this video and it's like "no, I'm not walking now, try later", but some times I gotta go to work and can't leave him home without peeing or I will be lost in puddles when I get home.
I read that bull terriers are very stubborn. How can I change that?

Hello and thank you for your wonderful videos. My soon to be 1 yr old is very stubborn and because she pulls really hard on a lease I switched over to a harness months ago. I feared I would hurt her neck on the collar. I started training w/ the clicker/treat method, but think I've created a monster! She puts the brakes on and refuses to go forward w/o a treat! It is never a good walk. I've been told at the beginning of walk I should let her sniff for 5 minutes then walk her. Can you please advise, thank you!

Hi Denise, I have walked a lot of dogs with this issue. Don't take what I say as gospel (as every dog is different and responds to different stimuli) however, it is usually a good idea to determine what engages your dog before you go for a walk. Try 3 levels of engagement, starting with praise, if that fails step it up to treats, hold the treats in a closed fist with a small hole in between your thumb and fore finger that the treat can poke out of but can't be taken from and see if that grabs your dog's attention. If that also doesn't keep attention try a chew toy with a rope handle that you can hang onto and see if your dog has a good prey drive.
Once you have determined what gets your dog engaged, do that activity before you go for your walk, it will help keep the dog in a positive mindset.
Now, if your dog decides to be stubborn on a walk make sure to have that engaging tool with you (treats/toy). If she puts the brakes on, try not to play into her game, by that I mean, don't turn around and come over to her and give her attention when she is in that stubborn state, it will reinforce that bad behaviour. Instead, entice her with your engagement tool. If that doesn't work- simply drop the leash (make sure you're doing this in a safe environment preferably in an enclosed area to start off with) and walk slowly straight ahead without looking back at her. If you've walked 30 metres without her following you- turn around call her attention to you with the engagement device and she should come right to you.
If that fails you can walk back to her and try to lift her off the floor with no tension on the leash and (without tugging) just slowly walk her, picking her up each time she tries to stop until she gets the picture that you're not going to put up with this behaviour.
Lastly- always reinforce GOOD behaviour (if she walks back to you, give her a treat or let her play with the toy for a second or two), dogs learn by reinforcement. Reward within 2 seconds, or correct within 2 seconds for maximum effectiveness.
      Hope this helps! :)

You can try to teach the comand "leave it" and give lots of treats and praise when they let go. Eventually they learn they get more when they don't bite the leash. I know this comment is 2 months old but figure it wouldn't hurt to reply. Maybe helps someone else 😅.

It seems like they dont like being in a leash, i still havent put them some collar and im figuring out how to get one too

@@ZukiXye No worries Vincent I hope my advice is useful.
It can be difficult to get a dog used to a leash especially their first few times wearing it. Although, it gets MUCH harder if you don't address it at an early age. Once the pup gets older it will become very difficult to put a leash on her.
I would strongly recommend you consistently try to put a collar and leash on your pup, leashes are a great learning tool for walking/correcting behaviour and socialising your dog. There are some great videos to walk you through getting a dog used to a leash. Try them out! :)
Have a great rest of your week.
