To clarify about the Law thing....
It totally makes sense that he would be *able* to reattach his arm with his devil fruit. I DO think that it makes sense within the world, but my issue isn't that it doesn't make sense, just that things are regularly reversed which takes away the impact. I used this as an example, but I didn't mean for it to be a rant about this thing alone, just more using it as an example in something that I don't love that comes up a lot

You can't trust Oda that much on risk scenes. He gives false risk or "fake death" in every arc.
Here is a list of some of them:
Kaya's butler - brutally sliced up by Kuro. he's okay later.
Igaram - Explosion in whiskey peak. he comes back later unscathed. Robin probably saved him.
Dorry - face exploded by baroque works agent. he survived.
Pell - center of nuclear blast, survives with just crutches. awful.
All of the people fried by eneru that just kind of walked it off.
Conis dad - sacrifices himself to save daughter, blasted directly with lightning, survives inexplicably
Bellamy - seemingly killed by doflamingo, confirmed alive much later in the story.
Franky family - entire franky family declared dead by marines. turns out they were just wrong.
Bon clay - stays behind to save luffy, Magellan is clearly about to kill him before it cuts away. inexplicably survives
Vander decken - impaled by hody jones with a trident. i don't even remember how he survived this honestly. probably some BS.
Sabo - headshot by world noble and left to drown. his survival was at the very least hinted at
Law - arm sliced off, beaten, and filled with bullets. stated to be dead by doflamingo, only to survive and quickly recover
Doflamingo - decapitated by Kyros, only for it to be a string copy.
gecko moria - doflamingo attacks moria during marineford with heavy hinting that he has intent to kill, especially his line (paraphrasing) "I'll tell them you died a warrior's death..." However, doflamingo later states that moria escaped.
Gas victims - the poison gas is explained to freeze people in place so that they cannot escape and are forced to breathe the gas and die. many marine soldiers are stuck like this left to suffocate in the poison gas. after they get rid of the gas, they just break the soldiers out of their casings and they are fine.
Brownbeard - shot point blank in the face by a shotgun-wielding gigantic yeti
Even if someone really die (Ace) he immediately presents us with a "replacement" (Sabo) literally few chapters after.

Don’t worry, this is a critique shared by even the most hardcore One Piece fans. We’ve all been trained not to believe a character is dead, which definitely lessens the impact when their death does occur, because nobody believes them.

There’s one thing that is lost in translation that adds to Sabo’s memory recovery. “Sakazuki” is the name of the ritual they did as kids with the sake cups, and it is also the real name of Admiral Akainu, the lava man (aka-inu meaning red dog, just his code name). So Sakazuki (the ritual, and the admirals name) mentioned alongside ace and luffy in the newspaper is what made it come back. I still agree that it’s a bit too convenient but just thought I’d give a lil extra insight that only makes sense in the original language!

Hello from Japan. I think your understanding of One Piece is great, even though it is a manga with a lot of very wordplay and Japanese specific wording. So here's something I'd like to write about the author, Oda.
Please forgive me if my English is a bit strange.
Luffy is Oda's ideal child, so I don't think Merphy-san's expression about Luffy is wrong. However, when I see him speaking in the media, the manga that depicted Oda when he was a rookie manga artist, the feelings of his editor at the time towards Oda, and the battles between them and the publisher before the serialization, there are times when my image of Oda and Luffy overlap.
I can't explain in words the feeling I get from being Japanese and having Japanese as my mother tongue, but I feel that Oda has a very cheerful personality, but at the root of his heart, he is very dry and realistic, and has a kind of cool humanity. I often feel that he has a very bird's eye view of the world and even the manga he draws. On the other hand, there is also an unusual amount of passion, hard work, and compassion for others. In fact, Oda has said that he doesn't put his own ideology into his work, that he just uses whatever he can to make his manga more interesting. Among Japanese fans, Oda is famous for his wide range of friendships and his interest in all things. There is no other manga artist like him. He takes all of them and sort of uses them in his manga. I think that is why he is able to draw so many characters in a consistent way without contradiction. On the other hand, he has also donated hundreds of millions of dollars to his hometown where there was a disaster, without announcing it (I'll spare you the explanation, but it was announced later due to the trouble) Japan has a lot of disasters, so the amount of undisclosed donations is probably much higher.
I think this aspect of Oda's work is reflected in Luffy, making him a mysterious character with a childlike and mature side. I don't think Luffy is inherently a very likable character. He does stupid things, he annoys other people, and he's selfish in many ways. He is not portrayed in a way that would make him popular in terms of appearance, and he has lost many battles. But Luffy is number one in the popularity polls in Japan and around the world. I think it's a tremendous technique of Oda's that the readers don't lose faith in the characters even when they expose their pathetic parts or act stupidly repeatedly and it's Oda's magic that he can make even seemingly negative flaws into lovable characters.

We never get to know this "real name" but it is hinted at, and the leading theory is that Baby 5 is just a code name. Oda planed for the Doflamingo family to all be an extension of Kaidos crew, hence why they all have card- or cardgame related names, like Doffy himself being the Joker card. But I do love the 5th kid theory as it fits to the backstory of the character, no fact to back it up tho.

100% agreed about Law's arm. Such a powerful, dramatic and consequential moment immediately wiped away by the fairy dust of magical fruits. This sort of thing happens a lot with fake out deaths as well. If you're gonna do it, then do it. Many of us are actually at the point where we see something like this happens in One Piece, and instead of feeling the drama of the moment, all that occurs is the realisation that whatever we're reading is almost certainly going to be magically fixed and the moment rendered meaningless in a couple of chapters.

Yeah, people mostly complain because, pre timeskip, Oda was generally pretty good about giving all the Strawhats a fight every arc. As the cast has grown, a lot of the crew just doesn't get to show off their skills as much, and Robin's powers are one of the hardest to write fights for. Either Oda needs to make her opponent immune to her usual jointlocks, she insta-wins, or the opponent is just too high above her weight class and she loses.

Luffy Pulled Doflamingo down and beat him into the ground. Whereas in Alabasta, Luffy beat the shit out of crocodile and punched him through the ground in the middle of the war, for all to see who the true perpetrator was. The parallel is obvious here.

Sabo’s memory loss was a sticking point for a lot of us, but it makes a lot more sense in its original translation.
We don’t get this as English readers, but having the paper mention Ace, Luffy, and admiral Sakazuki at once is significant. The admiral’s name literally translates (or can be translated as) an exchange of cups in brotherhood, just like the three sake cups Ace, Luffy and Sabo drink to solidify their brotherhood. It’s not just the names, but the events that make it all click into place.
Just some of those nuances we just don’t seem to get here in the west.

Robin's ability to be a background/side character in the story is a testament to her character development honestly. For the most part she's just happy to be around them, going along with or enjoying watching their shenanigans as you say. She still has her own dreams of course, and still has her moments, but I think the decision is the right one, even if her fans want to see more of her all the time.

What weirds me out about the 10 minute recharge is the manga says he can’t use haki in those 10 minutes which is weird because wouldn’t it make more sense if he can’t move his body for 10 min since it specifically affects it similar to early gear 3 (like characters like vergo or pika could coat there whole bodies in haki and they don’t experience any recoil)

    • @dohtje5029

Well the 10.min thing is kinda the same as gear 3rd.. In Enies Lobby (I think the scene where he went G3 offscreen first with chimney. He said oww im small exactly as long as Ive been in G3 form. So Luffy knowing the downside of his power is rather logical, he trained with G4 for over a half year since he showed Rayleigh the form befor he left (and created King Kong Gun afterwards) thus knowing it's 10 minutes makes sense. Counting By the second is kinda dumb, but feel like the announcer counting down was more added for suspense and comedic relief then actually a plot device, hence Doffy not reacting to it. 29:48 - Luffy doesn’t see the world from an innocent perspective at all. He sees it as it is. Remember when he flat out told Vivi that human collateral is a reality of war? Also, the reason why Luffy doesn’t care about backstories is because he prefers to judge people in the present by their current actions. Luffy might be an idiot but he’s not really “child-like”, innocent, naive and pure.
Edit: In fact Luffy is among some of the most selfish shonen protagonists, something Nami alluded to when she got his 3D2Y message. But somehow this image of Luffy as this pure childlike, innocent, wholesome boy persists. He’s a pirate. He can fight dirty. He steals. And has cause countless of human collateral damages.

I always saw Bellamy’s unwillingness to betray Doflamingo as the flip side of what Luffy showed him on Jaya. On Jaya, Luffy was rewarded and portrayed positively for chasing a foolish, ridiculous dream. Bellamy was punished and portrayed negatively for having shallow beliefs and a unwillingness to believe in dreams.
Here, Bellamy is acting much as Luffy did in Jaya. He’s continuing to pursue a dream, serving Doflamingo, that is foolish and ridiculous. However, it’s obvious how misguided this dream is. And yet, he refuses to abandon it because of what he learned from Luffy on Jaya. That foolish and ridiculous dreams are worth pursing. Yet in this context, we see the clear flaws in that idea.
Bellamy as a character has always been deeply tied to the theme of dreams, and as dreams are one of the central themes of all of One Piece, it’s always made him a fascinating character.

3 things to consider about Sabo's amnesia:
    1. It did came back over 2 years before Dressrosa, when he read the article about Sabo's death
    2. In that article he read 3 important things: Portgas D. Ace, Monkey D. Luffy, and Sakazuki. Sakazuki means cup, and it's also the name of the Yakuza ritual through which, by sharing a cup of sake, you swear allegiance as equals (siblings) or master/subordinate (parent/child), so the ritual that made Sabo, Ace and Luffy into brothers (or the one the Grand Fleet shared with everyone but Luffy at the end of this arc)
    3. I don't know if you've ever found out of the death of someone you used to know through the news, and I wish you never will. It hits way different than seeing someone you know/used to know on the news for a different reason. I've experienced both, and while with the latter you kinda think "oh, how nice, I wonder how they're doing, will give them a call", with the former you just get into a shock state, and start wondering how and why before starting griefing and remembering everything you ever shared with that person. And it's even more so when it was a violent death (also experienced both violent and non-violent). I know this is not something most people cannot relate to, or even imagine, and upon first reading it even myself did not catch it, as the episode of learning through the news of a childhood friend having been killed in one of the most brutal ways I can even imagine had not yet occurred. Upon re-reading it, though, after that had happened, it hit me on an entirely different level, to the point that I wondered if Oda himself went through that. Came to the conclusion he hasn't, because it is a bit flat, but an episode like that certainly does jog your memory in the most painful way

I've always just assumed Luffy gave zero fucks for anything going on that wasn't directly happening around him that it made perfect sense he would never have heard the name of any of Dragons people. The circle of people that knew about the three brothers even being connected is quite small and consists mostly of a single group of mt bandits. • @silentcookie7261

Yes, I always thought about that issue like this, too. Luffy just doesn't care about newspaper articles and bounty posters of others and stuff.
Also I never was quite sure if the marines even had a proper photo of Sabo. Like, I always headcanoned the revolutionaries to often do more like spy stuff and pull strings in the background etc. (I'm not up to date, so if there were new canon informations out there I don't know about, I apologize), and seeing as they didn't even have a photo of Sanji for a long time, I could see that the marines just didn't have that much concrete infos about the members of the revolutionary army to put out there. Which then would explain why Ace also didn't know about him (if he even read that much newspapers... I assume more than Luffy, seeing as he was a commander plus searching for Luffys bounty posters, but I also don't see him as someone who paid that much attention on stuff like that).
I remember, back then, my friend and I were just so relieved about the reveal with the amnesia that we just didn't care that much about it being a little bit too convenient for the plot 😂😅 because since the moment of Sabo's return, we were like: We want to like you, but we can't do that fully until you give us a really good reason why you let your brothers think you were dead and why you weren't at Marineford (or trying to get there)...

So something that you might miss reading the manga alone:
Oda insinuated in a little Q&A session called SBS that Violet and Doffy had a steamy romantic relationship and he couldn't really get into it because of the target age group of this manga (open to being fact checked on this) which is quite interesting for Violet character-wise
Also I hope Merphy picked up on that subtle thing Oda does where the devil fruits match the personality of the villains in most cases...
Crocodile was sand that sucked out the moisture and to an extent the life of out of Alabaster and left the place a desert
Enel was lightning because of his god-complex
Moriah because he's a shadow of the man he once was

I just want to leave a comment here saying how much I appreciate Merphy's style of criticism of the series. I've agreed with the majority of criticisms she's had once she really started delving into One Piece, and they truly feel like criticisms made by someone who loves the series and wants to see it get even better.
I enjoyed TotallyNotMark's series on One Piece, and have watched several of Daniel Greene's reviews, and while I enjoy their content creation and perspectives, I think their criticisms are often made in bad faith. I don't think there's anything wrong with someone who isn't a huge fan of something criticizing it, but the things that they tend to criticize are often either nitpicky or personal issues they have with the material (at least TNM is very honest about this and states on multiple occasions that the problems he has with the series are personal). A lot of what they felt was badly-paced or not well written was mostly a result of them speeding through the series and glancing over details, not understanding character traits and how those impact certain decisions, and other such things. They often make comments or assumptions that are blatantly wrong because of how fast and how analytically they read the series.
Murphy, on the other hand, has just as discerning of an eye as the other reviewers, and is even going through the series almost as fast. Yet it's extremely clear that Murphy loves One Piece, and on a deep level understands and is affected by its themes and characters. Because of this, she reads in much more detail and appreciates much more of what Oda does to make One Piece truly an epic. Likewise, her critiques come from a place of true desire for certain elements of One Piece to be better, and feel much more sincere (and are much more justified).
I really don't mind critique and rants, but when a large portion of the entire review is dedicated to something that isn't even true, or something that has been misunderstood because of lack of close reading and understanding, it really becomes hard to watch, at least to me. Murphy's criticisms are much easier for me to stomach because they are things that are usually informed by actual facts and consistent information. These days it's so hard to get that sort of sincere and accurate criticism because so many One Piece youtubers and reviewers are heavily biased for or against the series, making it either pandering or needless slandering.

I guarantee you that if Law had not re-attached his arm, 90 percent of the fandom would have complained why didn't Law do it calling it a plothole as we know that he has the power to attach limbs. When his arm was severed, it was easily hinted that he would reattach his arm back, with the help of Leo. Since Leo's character was introduced early in Dressrosa with his stitch devil fruit power. Still impactful scene but nothing much to feel disappointed or anything. Law pretty much wasn't affected during the battle anyway. He can do surgery on himself and remove the bullets, what's a severed arm gonna mean for him. Lol.

    • @logichikari3471
      @logichikari3471 3 ปีที่แล้ว +39

@@GoldenMechaTiger Did Law re-attaching the arm makes sense in the story? yes. Did him losing an arm adds to how menacing and threatening Doflamingo is as an antagonist? yes. Did him re-attaching an arm fundamentally breaks the rules established by Oda already in the story? no. The whole point about Law losing an arm was not about him getting nerfed but to show how terrifying of a villian Doflamingo is. And that scene 100 percent served that purpose. There are a lot of things Oda can be criticized about but to call that specific sequence bad writing is not one of them. That is why I said Oda can't win either way. At the end of the day opinions are subjective and you can interpret the sequence however you want to interpret it though so its fine. One thing I REALLY love about this arc, and this ending specifically, is how it essentially finishes off the last of the “Bad Warlords” at the SAME TIME Luffy’s Grand Fleet establishes a sort of Pirate Warlords for him! It’s such an interesting parallel, and I’m very curious to see if we get more development of the Grand Fleet members as we go.

I love when people also geek out on the crew embracing their roles. Chopper wanting to be the crew's monster, Franky becoming Luffy's enforcer upon hearing about the Mera Mera fruit and subsequently being the one man army seiging the factory.
It's not confirmed, but is a popular headcanon backed by a lot of small interactions and how often Oda pairs the two on cover pages, but Franky and Robin are a couple which plays into them being functionally team dad and mom.

The best part about Korazon being "hearts" place in Doflamingo's desk is that it works on two levels:
On one side, Doflamingo misses "hearts" place, because he killed his brother, who was once there. So he quite literally killed his own heart.
On the other hand, Doffy was ready to give that place to Law - specifically because he thought they were so similar. Which basically means, that the only person who he can have in his heart is actually himself.
That, my friends, is amazing character/thematic work, I have to admit.

A fan once asked Oda if he could draw what Doflamingo looked like without the sunglasses, and Oda being Oda and not wanting to draw that for whatever reason, decided to troll us all by revealing that Doflamingo wears a second pair of glasses directly underneath the first one in one big joke response. I doubt Doffy actually does this in story, but it does make you think how he could get a second undamaged pair so quickly.

He was able to literally cut out his white lead disease from his own body on the cellular level. Reattaching a few blood vessels, arteries, and muscles is much simpler by comparison. Them having princess Mansherry do it instead was a surprise.

To answer your 1st critism. It's because One Piece chapters are released weekly, so sometimes Oda make those kind of "fake" tension to keep the weekly release engaging for weekly chapter reader. It become a bigger problem when the reader binge read it, as the tension are resolved rather almost imidiately since the "week gap" tension isn't there. It's totaly valid critism, but at the same time i also quite undertand why it ought to be written that way especially with weekly crunch deadline format he is in.
