glad that one piece is being discussed by such civilised and distinguished gentlemen
Its refreshing. Lots of childish One Piece discussion after the USA election Im seeing unfortunately.

The banter between Allen and Philip is absolutely hilarious, and then Jimmy just subtly doing his role of instigator, occasionally egging Allen on, love it
Jimmy is the expert at instigating and egging on Allen!
You gotta have both Merphy and Allen for a Fishman Island discussion so we can see a battle for the ages
We never really knew Ace. We cared about him because Luffy did. It's heart breaking to see the ever optimistic Luffy absolutely break down at the loss of his brother. AND THEN we get Ace's backstory and we get to mourn his death a second time but now because we do know Ace. It's absolutely brilliant.
This was something I missed when I first experienced the war in the manga. I didn't feel a lot for Ace or the backstory too much until I thought about the fact that we ALWAYS have to trust in our captain. If this is someone our captain loves and wants to save, we have to trust in him. After that of course and developing more literacy over the years, I really came to enjoy the way Oda wrote this part.
Glad to see Allen and Jimmy back as guests on the channel. They are two of my favorite people on TH-cam!
Two of my favorites too!
I love Allen’s spicy opinions. Definitely brings out some color to this discussion.
Jimmy! Happy to see you out here still talking one piece after all this time. Hope your one piece journey still going strong.
I gotta say, Philip; you are so incredible at hosting discussions like these! The way you are able to succinctly summarize each theme/character/topic before giving the floor to other people is a skill in and of its own. It always feels like the book discussions on your channel are very productive without the guests being railroaded. Many props to you on your hosting skills
Thank you! Thirty years of teaching come in handy sometimes!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy They do indeed! Your professorial side shines through where it is needed.

Same here!
I saw Jimmy I pressed like. Come on Jimmy, it's two years already! Time to return to Shabaody!!! 🤩🤩
Jimmy gets an automatic like from me too.
My partner was spoiled that Ace dies...at some point. She did not know it was Marineford and the entire arc up to his death made her think he was going to live and die in a different arc. So somehow, even after being spoiled, the death was still a shock and surprise to her.
When I feel like I have been spoiled, I often try to counter-spoil myself, give emphasis to clues that disprove my notion of what I believe to have been the spoiler. It works sometimes
Allen it’s such a joy to see you in any discussion, you have such a knack for impressions that I very much enjoy. I hope people come to understand that disagreements are a part of life and should be tackled with wit ,humour and insight rather than aggression and negativity.
Beautifully said!
I miss Jimmy reviews on One Piece, hopefully he’ll one day continue bc there is so much more that happens in One Piece that is incredible. Also loved the discussion between the three of you guys, can’t wait for the next review.
what happen to his content? I might have missed the boat here. Was it about spoilers?
wohoo! I love Allen's out of pocket takes. You're discussing fiction after all so it's really not that serious and I really enjoy hearing some new takes/perspective on my favourite fiction piece of all time
Bless you, this is the way!
From the moment Allen said " Can you please instruct the witness to answer the question" i was reeling with laughter! Loved his defense for Akainu 😆
It amuses me the number of people who will think Allen absolutely hates Philip, just saying I love this dynamic. Its weird how well I can see Allen's point, but mostly I'm with Philip, still I want you in this lives, Allen, come back!
Hahahaha I love Philip
I was just about to write that Allen loves me. 😁
Always good to see someone who understands that they were called the devils of ohara for a reason
This is the way
Jimmmy!!!!!!!!! 🤩🤩
I really hope that he will continue his chapter reviews eventually!
why did he stop?
@@mayurmadiwalar8978people kept spoiling things for him and he was reading for his own enjoyment, not content so he decided to stop posting so he could read at his own pace/ free mind
@@jamesmorseman3180 Also it seemed he misinterpreted a lot of stuff while reading, like the usopp/Luffy situation, so people became kinda angry, while I can see both sides... but it was surprising the lack of reading comprehension at a 1st lvl.
People can be really mean in the internet... so it makes sense why he stopped doing chapter reviews.
@@petitflowr275having an opposing opinion is not lacking reading comprehension and the things I missed I was happy to take on the chin and change my mind. However a mistake doesn’t mean I do not have reading comprehension or am dumb. These type of passive aggressive comments are part of the reason I stopped covering one piece.
@@thefantasynuttwork Well I am still sad you stopped and do keep the hope burning that maybe one day when you have caught up that you then make one big retrospective video on all the things you encountered while catching up and then make new predictions with the rest of the people that also caught up.
Philip: Sabo is noble who sees what it is and breaking out of that is such a good character set up.

Again, the thumbnail is top notch lol. Also I hope Jimmy continuing his one piece journey videos ❤
Was looking forward to this video and didn't disappoint. The wonderful thing about One Piece is that there is something for almost everyone to enjoy. It can be as deep as you want it to be or just as cool as you want it to be.
Well said!
Thank you for doing these! Jimmy you are missed! Please keep reading and keep us updated! Allen made me laugh out loud several times. This was great, I'm planning on starting to create my own One Piece analysis vids and i would love to be invited to talk with you all when I get things running eventually!
Also, my hot take is that Sanji is Oda's best character. His flaw is what makes him imperfect and Oda needed to give him something like that so that he didn't overshadow other characters 🤣
Personally Sanji just grosses me out a lot of the time he is on the page. I really can't get past his behavior and demeanor towards women. I don't like to pick and choose which parts of a character to ignore when thinking about if they're a good character or not, so for me Sanji is nowhere near the best. Just my two cents, obviously this is all subjective @@jphilipphoto
Let us know when you’re there, Nakama!
The thing is i see it as a cultural thing. It's just what's done in anime and frankly One Piece is probably the best with it in that its never celebrated. Every character shows their disdain towards it. I also think there's a weird culture of hating the entire Sanji character when really, apart from that, he's one of the most compassionate, smart, empathetic, thoughtful characters otherwise. @@t3cchan
@@jphilipphoto I am half Japanese, so I am well aware of how cultural differences play into Sanji's character and his pervertedness. And I wouldn't say I hate his character overall, he's just kind of at the middle of the pack, since there are aspects I love and aspects I hate about his character that cancel each other out. Not the worst character by any means. Just not my favorite. There are plenty of other characters in OP where I love EVERY aspect of them.
I love the dynamic between the 3 of you! Loved the banter and couldn’t help smiling throughout the video.

An excellent idea!
Just one thing on the Garp vs Akainu, yeah Garp is just a Vice-Admiral but it specifically mentioned that he refused further promotion cause then he would be working under direct command of the World government and the Nobles.
the fact he actually thinks Akainu can survive Garp is absolutely mind boggling
@@TSO_TheSaga i can't wait for them to get to Egg Head.
Garps title is hero
If Garp in his prime fought/was a rival to Gol D Roger, we all know what it means : Admiral Level .
Later in the story (yeah I'm up to date manga wise), you know what Garp said to Sengoku wasn't a fake threat. Garp is still conflicted and I always loved the duality of his character
Akainu demolishes old garp@@TSO_TheSaga
39:07 "But Luffy's freedom never impinges on someone else's freedom. His freedom is... is... it's joyful." 🔥🔥🔥
Haven't heard from Dudes talking Manga in awhile. Glad to see him again.
amazing discussion!!
thanks for sharing
30:00 when talking about ranks between Akainu and Garp, it kinda evens out when you find out (possible spoils)
That Garp turned down the Lead Admiral position. I believe they said that in the live action as well, because Garp explained that he'd become more of a tool and lose his freedom as a marine. So Akainu may out rank garp but Garp may still be more powerful. Especially since Garp was supposedly the only Marine that could give Gol Roger a problem back then. That's a feat in itself
no spoilerinos but 100% this
Garp is definitely more powerful at this point. Man used to rival Gold roger and WB. And he never stopped training
100% agree! Garp could totally beat Akainu, no one says it would be easy, but he is completely able to do it
garp cant kil akainu not even in prime maybe, oda glazes akainu
@shashwatdewa2311 ***spoils***
Only read if your caught up in anime
I think it's fair to assume Kuzan is really close to Akainu in strength, didn't they fight for several days on punk hazard? Akainu won but it wasn't like he overpowered Kuzan. They're easily close in power. Now when you think about it like that... the fight we saw Garp put up against Kuzan, Garp was literally being jumped by the whole island, and put up so much of a fight, Kuzan didnt really know what to do. Not only that but Garp had to get his crew off the island, which was his main goal, he didn't want to kill Kuzan, but it seems like he could have if he wanted to. 1 on 1, A fight between Akainu and Garp may be in Garps favor, oda would have to write opportunities in the fight like he did for Kuzan lol
The way Allen acted so flawlessly to keep you guys from spoilers is so funny
@@godofthemodernlands It’s a high wire feat!
Your scenario with the little girl in Loguetown where it's Akainu instead of Smoker getting ice cream spilled on their pants really caught me off guard hahahahaha
@@SpiderEmblem I bet Akainu doesn’t even like ice cream.
Hey Philip, if you want to gain more insight into the dynamics and world building of One Piece, it would be great if you do a colab with Tekking101. Many agree he's the best One Piece youtuber and he's also a history and geography enthusiast, so his takes on fictional geographies are always swell. He has colabed with Merphy as well. Please make it happen. 😊
Yeah he even has a series called geography is everything
WAIT IS THAT JIMMY NUTS FROM DUDES TALKING MANGA WHERE DUDES TALK ABOUT MANGA
I think the most beautiful thing about the "I still have my crew" moment is that Luffy essentially did the same thing that Whitebeard did, he taked all this orphans and abandoned people and maked a familiy, he saved them when they needed him the most and when he need comfort, when he is the one who need to be saved from the loss of his brother it's the memories of his crew who save him.
@LibraryofAllenxandrea I want you back, Allen, you're such an amazing character. And I don't understand the haters, you are perfectly adequate.
Yessssss perfectly adequate!

Yes! Love those episodes . The discussion was very fun. Allen is always welcomed fellow nakama. Jimmy too cant wait for his update on OP. ❤❤❤
I love allen and jimmy being here! I hope jimmy continues one piece!
Omg! I’ve missed Jimmy’s videos on One Piece so much, but I totally understand why he wanted to stop. One of my favorite things to do is find new people experiencing the story, because I’m getting very close to episode 1000 by this point! And I’ve started reading the manga because I was inspired by people like Philip, Jimmy, Murph, etc.
I hope to catch up next year! Cheers!
An aspect I really enjoy about the Marineford arc is that not everything goes according to plan. Up until Marineford Luffy had been able to conquer every challenge and defeat every enemy that stood in his path. Ace’s death serves as a lesson to Luffy that we can’t always get what we want and sometimes giving it your all is not enough.
Too true!
This is a pretty hilarious discussion, especially the last 20 minutes or so 😂
Man this was an entertaining discussion. They were really going at each other in such a fun way.
Really happy to see you guys. Special mention for Jimmy. It is always a pleasure to see people discuss about One Piece in depth
Loved the great discussion about one piece. It truly makes me sad that people out there spoil others cause like Jimmy said you cannot reread something for the first time. Just be cautious as you continue this glorious story.
Love to see Jimmy back in the OP discussion. Miss your videos and always happy to hear from you!

Same here! 😁
Eustass is what I like to call Junkyard Shanks, also I couldn't stop the laughter.
About Sanji, you might hate in Fishman Island, but after that, I don’t want to mention the arc name, but in that arc, he gets a lot of character depth. Yes, his perverted side is still a part of him, and I don’t think Oda will ever remove that aspect, but trust me, he’s much more than that.
I’m glad to hear this! Thank you!
Typical Sanji apologist. lol
I don’t understand reading a Japanese work and complaining about Japanese culture in it. Ero jokes are part of the territory in shonen manga, just go with it.
That's awesome discussion, thanks guys!
I had so much fun listening to this discussion. Thank you, guys, for making it happen. It was a perfect blend of thoughtful discussion and good old-fashioned banter. Allen saying he likes order when he's such a force of chaos on stream is a mystery for the ages, or is it just you, Philip, who brings out the agent of chaos within him?😂 Also concerning the next big arc, I'm not worried at all that you're going to enjoy it, as the criticisms against it are not things that would bother you, and its strengths are exactly what you love One Piece for. So I'm really looking forward to your next arc review, as I think you'll have a lot of fun dissecting what makes the arc great.

This was such a fun listen. Glad i get to catch y'all while at work ❤
What a great discussion. Many great points made about characterization and introductions in general. One piece doesn't feel taxing with names like "Battle Royal" for example where you're introduced to 50 characters at once and all of their names are like 5 syllables lol
Library of Allenxandria is such a good name
I've always felt the same as Allen, I always like the villain better and can't stop rooting for them, by the way what a great talk, nice to se you three together :)
18:25 I feel like Allen would get along with Garou from the "One Punch Man" series (Web Comic/Manga/Anime). I wouldn't be surprised if he's already seen it, but in case he hasn't I wanna make this a recommendation for him based on his comment, as well as a possible recommendation for Jimmy & Philip to possibly also check it out. It is definitely more of a light-hearted comedy, but, unless someone corrects me on this, I believe this series basically half invents a semi-new troupe by reimagining a Superhero story where the protagonist starts the story at the end of their journey instead of their beginning.
29:42 I dislike using my future knowledge of the series to weigh in on conversations like these, but I'll keep it as spoiler free as I can. Garp is 1000% on Admiral level in terms of power, Allen! You can't use his rank to judge his power, much like how you can't use the criminals' bounties to power-scale the characters to each other (remember Robin got her bounty as a powerless little girl just b/c of her knowledge). If I remember correctly (again, everyone please correct me on this if I'm wrong), it has been stated that Garp could actually have been an Admiral instead of a Vice-Admiral, except for two things: 1) He declined the position on at least one occasion, and 2) They eventually stopped trying to promote him because of his eccentric & sometimes crazy and wild attitude. (It is either one or both reasons, or an entirely different reason that I forgot) The ONLY counterpoint to be made is his age deteriorating his strength from what it once was, but not his rank. On the topic of Devil Fruits vs Haki, in general Haki has the edge to win those fights, flat out no question. It is definitely not a for-sure thing, but having stronger Haki is more of an edge than having a stronger Devil Fruit. (This is unfortunately yet to be proven from where some of these guys are at in the story currently, but it is a true fact within the world of One Piece.)
1:10:38 Ah, well, you see, Allen, the reason why Akainu doesn't go after the Celestial Dragons is because [SPOILERS (if you're caught up in the anime sub, you probably have an idea of "why")]. No, but seriously, outside of that, his motto is "Absolute Justice," following the rule of the law EXACTLY as it is written, and unfortunately it has been written that the founders of the World Government & all of their decedents are exempt from these laws, and instead they state that, in fact, they *ARE* the law! And that's just how it is written until the World Government Law gets rewritten.
Love the video & all of the discussions, guys. Probably my best highlight of this is Allen calling out those people in the OP community who act just as elitist as the Celestial Dragons that they say they hate without realizing their own irony! I had a friend previously almost not get into One Piece specifically b/c of those types of OP fans, I think what I said at the time was something along the lines of how those types of people didn't understand the message of the series. Luffy is trying to become "The Pirate King," not because he wants power, or glory, or fame; Luffy sees the title of Pirate King to mean "The Freest Person in the World," and that's what he wants to be, the freest of them all! And so with these people trying to dictate from their elitist position "how" someone should enjoy One Piece, is a bit infuriating and I think you explained it beautifully.
Love this comment! Akainu forever! 😛😛
i missed jimmy! thanks for this wonderful podcast, it'll be a glorious hour for me 😢
Glad to see Jimmy still talking manga
It's been 8 months
I don't know how but I just knew Allen is an Akainu fan, Allen is so much fun
I'm glad you made the Malazan - One Piece comparison because I think the thing they mostly have in common and that makes them just feel very similar to me is their connection to a third medium and that is them feeling at times a lot like a D&D or general RPG campaign.
And we know for Malazan that's what a lot of it is based on and I think for One Piece the release schedule lends itself to that, because a lot of what I see in both is what happens to me when playing in or even moreso game mastering a campaign. There is a bigger goal and story always in the back of your mind, but you also just have some fun moments that evolve sort of naturally week to week and see where those take you and you have characters that all the players just fall in love with you find a way for the story to come across them again.
Well said!
while i disagree with most of allens takes (especially the power scaling stuff) his imperssion of iva was amazing. I really loved your take on things philip, your such en empathetic person and it shines out even more in a geniuen conversation. I'm definitely one of those that enjoy battle scenes in manga form. I understand why a lot of people prefer to see them animated, but there is a certain charm to me in how you can see every single bit of the action in a manga. I love how motion is represented in manga.
Speaking of, it's completely off-topic, but I just thought you'd really like reading Akane-Banashi. It's totally something that'd be up your alley, be it on the emotional side, the storytelling or the way it captures an unique ancient art form.

Such cultured gentleman….sensing supreme haki…. Might I suggest a show they would absolutely love? Vinland Saga!!!!
I now feel horrible for disliking the last One Piece discussion with Allen but at the same time I came here for Professor Chase to kind of indulge my love of this manga while also taking me back to college, doing it in a way that made me feel like I was listening to academia meets One Piece, and the discord discussions don't really do that but I DO WANT BOTH, I PROMISE, just not one at the cost of the other, this was brilliant thank you. I also feel quite strongly that marineford is the height of One Piece right now becauuuusssseee, that was the end to the first half, OR MAYBE ONLY THE FIRST THIRD. We're gonna get marineford like moments at the end of the second half, or act, I personally guarantee it!
No need to feel bad, Niel - I’m glad you’re here!
I love marineford as much as the next guy, but in my opinion, what makes One Piece great is the lore and characters, which is always getting better after timeskip. So my favorite 4 arcs are actually after marineford.
